In a speech dominated by political rhetoric, Mr Albanese repeated his personal story to illustrate why he was ready to take on the nationโ€™s top job.

โ€œAs I ask you for the privilege of forming government, I think about the path of my life that has led me here. I grew up in a council house, raised by a single mother. Mum and I didnโ€™t have much, but we had each other.

โ€œI learnt the value of a dollar. I learnt about the strength of community. I learnt about the power of optimism in the face of adversity. I learnt about the strength of a parentโ€™s love, and how they will move mountains to give their kids a better life.

โ€œItโ€™s where I learnt to fight for what I believe in and what it means for everyday people to have leaders who fight for them. Itโ€™s why Iโ€™ll fight so hard for a better future.โ€

Albanese and that fvcking council house….his mum taught him the three pillars of faith – the Labor Party, the Catholic Church and the South Sydney Rabbit ohs….

Dot, Cohenite: ever tried periodization training?

All weight training is cyclical although a lot of guys just do maintenance workouts. Everyone does negative sets, matrix stacking, super-setting, dropping the weight while increasing the reps and generally varying their intensity over time etc.

Iโ€™m so strong and muscular I really donโ€™t have to bother although if enough ladies are in the gym I increase the poundage, just for appearances.

Thanks Cohenite. I haven’t done serious gym training for over a decade but now want to continue solidly throughout the year and then go into a maintenance mode. I do some negative sets but recent research suggested that training to failure is not necessary; obviously we need to get close to that. I still train to failure, don’t know why, find it satisfying, don’t feel happy if I don’t feel pain. Here’s a quandary: I am easily the oldest person in the gym yet I train harder than most. It even seems to me that for some of the teenagers and youth there intensity is a foreign concept. Only in this new gym though, at the old gym there was plenty of intensity! Perhaps I should go back there because when I ended my membership they let me keep the access card. Haven’t tried it yet but I think it will still work.

Greg Sheridan goes all groupie after Zelensky makes a Zoom speech – give the Ukraine the Army’s tanks:

One suggestion of Zelenskyโ€™s was particularly sensible: Why donโ€™t you give some of your armoured vehicles to Ukraine? They will do more good for Western security in Ukraine than they will sitting in your parks, he said.

He mentioned Bushmaster vehicles specifically but he should aim higher and go for Australiaโ€™s tanks. We havenโ€™t deployed a tank into a contested military area anywhere in the world since the Vietnam War, more than 50 years ago, and we are unlikely ever to deploy them in the future. Yet we hang onto them, combination curios, museum pieces, vanity projects.

Hereโ€™s a chance to deploy them after all. Aussie tanks for Ukraine. It has a certain ring to it, donโ€™t you think?

Don Adams was once a drill instructor in the Marines.

When Lee Marvin starred in โ€œThe Dirty Dozenโ€, the film armorer took him aside for a weapons lesson.

โ€œThis is the sub machine gun in use in the United States Army at the time, this is how you would hold it, this is how it would behave when you fired itโ€ฆ.โ€

Lee Marvin never said a word. He took the weapon, stripped it down, laid out the parts in sequence and re assembled it, before handing the weapon back to the armorer.

The armorer went cold as he realized he was trying to give a Marine Corps veteran of the Pacific War, a lesson on weapons handling..

I enjoyed Marvin’s role in The Big Red One. It is surprising the number of actors from that era who signed up for the military. Not John Wayne though, he was excused because he had 4 kids. That’s OK but it irked me when he did those war movies.

Australian armour, while sneered at by media pundits and easily distracted think-tank theorists in love with missile telemetry and sexy fast jets, is the one thing (short of never going to war in the first place) that will keep Diggers alive when shit goes sideways.

It is not the Diggers’ or their immediate commanders’ fault that politicians (in uniform and without) think tanks look too ‘warlike’ and thus won’t permit their use- Politicians were unwilling to send tanks to Vietnam, too. Until the issue was finally raised in Question Time in 1968.

I have been following this blog for many, many years and consider it one of the treasures for the conservatives, I know of no other like it in Australia. Over the years there have been many comings and goings of commenters with different points of view and not all align with mine, however I appreciate the opportunity to look at other view to either reinforce my own or to maybe alter them slightly. We have also and still do have come very funny commenters.

I donโ€™t like anyone with robust views or different views being censored or banned, God gave me the ability to scroll and the means of doing so, which I do. I think that in the coming years, with the way the world is going we are going to need the cat more than ever, as our freedoms are going to be challenged in ways I donโ€™t think we yet understand or know. If we censor people with views continually repeated, or ones we donโ€™t like, we then deprive ourselves of the opportunity to learn or allow lurkers or newbies the opportunity of following another views or reinforced views outside msm.

At the time Struth joined the cat, he was in a โ€œdiscussionโ€ that went on for days and days and days about the constitution, which was very interesting and informative with inputs from others beside the two combatants. I donโ€™t consider that a major problem, a nuisance sometimes maybe, but still those discussions make for a lively and robust blog.

I donโ€™t envy Drover his role but do appreciate very much the fact that he took over the cat and continues to make it the best blog in Australia.

Tash Peterson, Jack Higgs, Arkadiusz Swiebodzinski on trial over Louis Vuitton naked protest stunt

Notorious vegan activist Tash Peterson has gloated about being back in WA and has wasted no time in taking to the streets to hurl abuse at shoppers.

Animal rights activist Tash Peterson was not being offensive when she stormed into a luxury brandโ€™s boutique half naked shouting at customers they had โ€œblood on their handsโ€ and were โ€œcontributing to a Holocaustโ€, her lawyer has argued in court.

Barrister Kathryn Heslop also told the 28-year-oldโ€™s trial that her clientโ€™s decision to enter the Louis Vuitton store wearing just a g-string and her torso covered in a red substance did not amount to disorderly behaviour because her nudity was not โ€œsexualisedโ€ and directly โ€œcorrelatedโ€ to the message she was trying to get across.

The vegan hardliner went on trial on Thursday along with her boyfriend Jack Higgs and fellow animal advocate Arkadiusz Robert Swiebodzinski accused of committing offensive behaviour when they entered the Raine Square store on August 21 last year.

The trio walked into the shop just after 2pm with Ms Peterson โ€” who was covered in what she claimed at the time was her menstrual blood โ€” carrying a sign saying that she would โ€œrather be naked than wear someone elseโ€™s skinโ€ while her co-accuseds filmed the entire stunt.

She then allegedly shouted to shoppers and staff: โ€œWho was murdered for your leather bag, down jacket and woollen jumper? If you buy an animal skin, fur, wool, feathers and scales you are committing the most horrific animal abuse on this planet. You are contributing to a Holocaust.โ€

Tash Peterson is a militant vegan, who boasts of making thousands of dollars a month, showing her bare bum on Instagram. O.K to flash your meat…

Whereโ€™s Dr. BG? Help!

I watched a bit of your video, John H, but I couldn’t stand the pace. Too slow. And rather patronising, which didn’t improve things.

A few points; the fine structure constant is not exactly 1/137. It’s close, but not the reciprocal of an integer. The video conceals that. Second, the universe isn’t mathematical. Mathematics is just the best language we have to describe what it does. They used to use Latin, but algebra works better, for various reasons I shan’t go into. Third, most theories are parametrised, which is to say there are actually an infinite family of them, each element of the family specified by a number or collection of numbers. If you want to know which one the universe uses, you have to make some measurements to pick out the best bets.

It’s conceivable that one day we’ll have a theory of everything that allows us to calculate the physical constants of our universe, but we aren’t within cooee of it at present.

The argument that our physical constants have been carefully chosen to allow our universe to support life is fundamentally silly. A different universe from ours might have totally different entities in it, smugly certain that it had been designed for them. This is just backwards. We’re here because this universe permits us to be in it.

I agree that it’s an amazing and wonderful place, and that being alive is a marvellous gift, but the idea that the universe was designed for us is a monumental conceit. We evolved in a tiny bit of it and we fit in with it, not it with us.

Whereโ€™s Dr. BG? Help!

I watched a bit of your video, John H, but I couldnโ€™t stand the pace. Too slow. And rather patronising, which didnโ€™t improve things.

A few points; the fine structure constant is not exactly 1/137. Itโ€™s close, but not the reciprocal of an integer. The video conceals that. Second, the universe isnโ€™t mathematical. Mathematics is just the best language we have to describe what it does. They used to use Latin, but algebra works better, for various reasons I shanโ€™t go into. Third, most theories are parametrised, which is to say there are actually an infinite family of them, each element of the family specified by a number or collection of numbers. If you want to know which one the universe uses, you have to make some measurements to pick out the best bets.

Itโ€™s conceivable that one day weโ€™ll have a theory of everything that allows us to calculate the physical constants of our universe, but we arenโ€™t within cooee of it at present.

The argument that our physical constants have been carefully chosen to allow our universe to support life is fundamentally silly. A different universe from ours might have totally different entities in it, smugly certain that it had been designed for them. This is just backwards. Weโ€™re here because this universe permits us to be in it.

I agree that itโ€™s an amazing and wonderful place, and that being alive is a marvellous gift, but the idea that the universe was designed for us is a monumental conceit. We evolved in a tiny bit of it and we fit in with it, not it with us.

Thanks Doc. I appreciate your expertise in the area. I didn’t intend for you to watch that video because it is dreadfully slow. I wanted your opinion on the mathematic-ontology debate because so many argue the opposite position but I’ve long held the same position as you. To give you some idea of the opposing trend the physicist Max Tegmark has written a book, “Our Mathematical Universe”. I’m pleased that we accord on that issue but it annoys me so many physicists argue like Tegmark. For myself mathematics works because it is so a very powerful and flexible means of modeling phenomena. I’m sure there are more technical explanations!

I’m not into the anthropic principle stuff. Some have argued that the apparent fine tuning is misleading because typically the proponents of the anthropic principle only change one or two parameters but there are a gazillion ways to mix and match and we can’t compute that but it is conceivable universes amenable to complexity can emerge with different constants.

The so-called Conservative Party in the UK is farcical. Those who think that Boris and Mrs Boris are outliers – think again:

Half of all backbenchers in the Conservative Party have now joined a green agenda group to push ahead with Prime Minister Boris Johnsonโ€™s Build Back Better vision of decarbonising the British economy.

Despite growing scepticism of the feasibility of the green movement to deliver on its targets without wrecking the economy, 133 Tory MPs have now signed onto the Conservative Environment Network (Cen) after former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt said that he has joined their ranks. The addition of Hunt means that the group now consists of half of the Conservative backbench (non-government) MPs in the parliament.

โ€œI am delighted to join the Conservative Environment Network to champion net-zero and nature conservation,โ€ Hunt said according to The Guardian.

โ€œNow, more than ever, in light of the global gas crisis and Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine, itโ€™s vital we decarbonise the UKโ€™s economy by 2050. We must develop more homegrown clean energy, including renewables and new nuclear. This will lower peopleโ€™s bills, strengthen our energy security and avoid the worst consequences of climate change,โ€ the former government minister added.

The left-wing paper noted that in comparison to the green group โ€” which claims to have grown by 18 MPs since the start of the year โ€” the Net Zero Scrutiny Group, which is holding the ongoing radical transformation of the economy to account, has only 19 publicly declared members.

If you think our politicians are dreadful, look at the UK. What a disaster.

Had this lot been around during the formation of the British Empire, they would have ceded the entire country to Kenya in order to ensure racial and economic justice.

While we are on the subj. of nefarious behaviour bo so-called conservative parties, for once I agree with Labor about this:

Australia’s Prime Minister and Attorney-General are facing questions about whether they abused their powers to instruct the Commonwealth Solicitor-General for partisan reasons in a bid to resolve a Liberal Party preselection stoush.

Solicitor-General Stephen Donaghue, QC, brought on an urgent hearing in the High Court on Thursday in a bid to leapfrog a New South Wales Court of Appeal hearing.

It came as bitter factional brawling has thrown the party’s NSW preselections into chaos and, ultimately, triggered a federal takeover of the NSW branch โ€” on the eve of a federal election โ€” to select candidates in several key seats.

The takeover enabled Cabinet ministers Sussan Ley, Alex Hawke โ€” a close political ally of the Prime Minister โ€” and backbencher Trent Zimmerman to have their preselections locked in.

Those matters โ€” which are at the hearts of a dispute between the New South Wales branch of the Liberal party and the Federal Executive over who has control of preselections โ€” have been brought to the High court as a constitutional issue.

The parties in the case are listed as Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Matthew Camenzuli from the New South Wales state executive, who were each represented by their own lawyers.

Mr Donaghue said the legal matters in the case touched on constitutional matters associated with chapter three, which sets out the power of the courts.

He told the court the proximity of the election, which could be called within days, gave extra impetus to the case.

“If it can finally be determined here, that will be in the public interest โ€ฆ to end the uncertainty,” Mr Donaghue said.

Chief Justice Susan Kiefel described the constitutional points as tenuous.

“It would be helpful to know when the election is going to be called,” she said.

“I don’t have instructions to tell you,” Mr Donaghue replied.

Using the Solicitor-General and the High Court in legal manoevres to do with internal party power struggles and preselection stoushes is banana republic stuff.

John H, I’ve read some of the Tegmark stuff. I think it’s fundamentally dishonest. He knows where he wants to go and interprets everything to get there.

I must say I feel the same way about Dover’s hero Aquinas. I admire some aspects of the man, but at root it’s dishonest. Fixing up the axioms to get to where you want to arrive at takes some intellect, and in science it may be fair play, but in theology it’s cheating.

Completely agree, Johanna. We are governed by a contemptible shower. And they aren’t smart enough to conceal it.

This is fair and unbiased reporting by TheirABC in 2022:

The principal of the school at the centre of an ugly discrimination saga in Brisbane has formally resigned.

An’ugly discrimination saga’ – it’s not exactly straight reporting. Needless to say, it involves the sacred ‘rights’ of alphabet persons.

P.S. How does one resign other than ‘formally’?

Victoria has been left out of the federal governmentโ€™s Energy Security and Regional Development Plan, a $7.1 billion fund to โ€œturbochargeโ€ the economies of four key regions.

Too soon to say anything about the crash at Mt D.
Know the place well, always avoided when flying.
Treacherous to the extreme for a small hill, in dubious weather.

Autumn is here. Minimum temp 9.4C, app temp more like 3C. Went outside for a fag and it was chilly. Space Station still up there.

I see that they did a changeover of staff on the SS this week, and the chaps refused to get involved in political discussions. Both Ruskies and Murricans involved.

If only others would take a leaf from their book.
