that was one of the most foul abominations ever perpetuated by the vaccine mandates. I’d divide opinions toward same-sex marriage in Taiwan into three camps,
Camp 1: Favors the inclusion of same-sex marriages into existing marriage laws. Hence same-sex marriages will be regarded perfectly the same as conventional marriages.
Camp 2: Favors a set of new laws (??) which would give legal status to same-sex couples, while not granting them the full rights under conventional marriage.
Camp 3: Opposes legal recognition to same-sex unions.
The referendum last year specifically rejected the camp 1’s proposal of considering same-sex marriages the equivalent of conventional marriages. From the ballots it is clear that only 30% of the electorate belonged to that group.
However another referendum held on the same date allowed for the creations of new laws granting rights to same-sex couples.
The new law passed yesterday falls into camp 2. In particular it avoids the wording of “same-sex marriage” and term it “permanent union”. Unlike regular marriages same-sex couples are not allowed to adopt children unless they were born by either one of the couples, hence neutralizing one of the strongest criticisms to same-sex unions.
The government is trying to tread on the middle-ground here. However many supporters of camp 1 and camp 3 are unhappy about the compromise, hence all the criticisms we can find on the news recently.
