It’s fun over on the “Sydney Morning Hemorrhoid” website – the howler monkey’s are honking about how we should vote “YES” because Aborigines weren’t counted in the census, weren’t citizens, and didn’t have the right to vote until the 1967 referendum.

I’m feeling a bit chipper this afternoon, though yesterday was a little low on volts, possibly from burning a bit too much candle at each end on a minor project.

Was in the Steak & Kidney all last week.
My pub puts out the paper at breakfast. Only the Sydney Morning Treason alas.
Reading it, you’d think you were in another country.

The readership (& most journalist contributors) seem to want to nobble every industry or productive aspect to the economy, & tax into an impecunious state anybody who makes any money or has a high salary.

They advocate/dream of this, seemingly believing this will have zero impact on their lifestyle & standard of living.

… and without imagining it would apply to them, their profession, & their salary.

    Complete dickheads.

Um, I think people have been educating themselves and they don’t like what they see. Daily Telegraph:

Indigenous cricket superstar Ashleigh Gardner has urged Australians to do their research and be informed before voting in the Voice to Parliament referendum.

Gardner represents a shamefully under-represented demographic of Australia’s national sport, as one of only four Aboriginal people to ever play Test cricket.

The superstar all-rounder – a potential future captain of her country – says it would be inappropriate for her to try and influence how other Australians vote but appealed for people who ‘don’t know’ what the debate is about, to educate themselves before D-Day arrives.

“It’s obviously up to every individual to make their own educated decision on it and it’s not for me to say, or to tell people what to vote for,” Gardner told this masthead as Cricket Australia marked 30 days until the start of the new Women’s Big Bash season.

“The most important thing is for people to make educated decisions rather than just going, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do, so I’m just going to vote for A or B.’

“There’s so many great resources and articles to read or videos to watch to help your decision, whether that is for a yes or a no.

“I think it’s important for people to actually go out there and educate themselves for how much they need to make the best decision they can … rather than just making a spur of the moment decision.”

Gardner revealed Australia’s national women’s players were spoken to about the Voice last Monday by Cricket Australia’s Head of Social Impact and Sustainability, Megan Barnett-Smith.

Cricket Australia has publicly supported the Yes vote, but the message to its own athletes has centred more around education.

“We had a good discussion with Megan … she spoke to us about the different resources we have around us. Whether it’s having a conversation with her around it or sharing articles to go and read yourself,” Gardner said.

“It’s not you making a decision because someone else has made that same decision, it’s purely individual and it’s all about the education as to why there is a ‘yes’ and why there is a ‘no.’”

Gardner has been an outspoken advocate for changing the date of Australia Day from January 26, calling out her own employer’s Cricket Australia for scheduling international cricket on a day of mourning for her people.

Being a voice on social issues has not been easy, but Gardner has learned to accept that being a true leader is not about always doing what’s popular and it’s a strength which has her well placed to one day be considered as Australian captain.

However, it’s not a role she is coveting.

“If that ever arose and they ever said, ‘would you like to do it,’ of course I’d say yes, but it’s not really an aspiration, I don’t strive to want to do that,” Gardner said.

“I just want to play as many games as I can for my country.”

Gardner is not just an important voice in Australian sport, but she is a proactive influence of change in indigenous communities.

The 26-year-old launched The Ashleigh Gardner Foundation earlier this year which is aiming to improve school attendance and nutrition for Aboriginal kids in regional areas, and has already started up at a school in Dubbo.

Gardner said she wants to leave a legacy that goes beyond her playing career.

“Sport is such a short part of my life and ultimately I want to leave a legacy long beyond my career,” she said.

“I want to make sure I’m inspiring the next generation, especially of Aboriginal kids to show that there is a real path for them to achieve whatever it is they want to achieve.”

It’s all very good that Gardner is setting up schools and wants to do more once her career finishes.
She’s unwittingly proving that the Voice is not needed by being a voice herself. Didn’t need any constitutional change for her work in Dubbo.

    The Voice will fix it!

The Auditor-General has been urged to probe the alleged misuse of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds within Australia‘s largest Indigenous legal organisation, following explosive allegations of corruption and fraud amongst senior staff, two of whom are still employed.

Opposition legal affairs spokesperson Michaelia Cash referred the matter to Commonwealth Auditor-General Grant Hehir and the Australian National Audit Office earlier this month, pressing an investigation into the near-$20m provided to the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency every year.

The referral comes following extensive reporting in this masthead that revealed dozens of serious allegations of criminal conduct amongst NAAJA’s leadership team.

Those allegations included that finance chief Madhur Evans made a secret $20,000 payment into chairperson Colleen Rosas’ bank account, and former chief executive Priscilla Atkins used company funds to purchase artworks, flights, and vehicles including a $129,000 Range Rover.

NAAJA is currently receiving $83m over a five year period from the National Legal Assistance Partnership (NLAP), which is helmed by the federal government.

Senator Cash requested Mr Hehir consider “an audit of arrangements under the NLAP that may result in the payment of Commonwealth money to NAAJA.”

“I refer to reports recently published in The Australian newspaper setting out claims regarding the administration of the NAAJA,” Senator Cash wrote in a letter to Mr Hehir, obtained by The Australian.

“The reports raise serious concerns about the potential misuse of Commonwealth money provided under the National Legal Assistance Partnership, and the efficacy of governance arrangements under that agreement.

“Among other things, the allegations give rise to concerns that Commonwealth money may have been used to support behaviour which, if proven, may constitute corruption or potential criminal conduct.”

Senator Cash continued: “Specifically, I ask that you consider a performance audit to assess the adequacy of data collection, performance monitoring and other governance arrangements under the NLAP, and whether adequate safeguards are in place to ensure that Commonwealth money is not being misused.”

She said if improvements to NAAJA were identified through the audit “I ask you to consider whether they ought to be implemented more generally in respect of funding to other service providers that is governed by the NLAP.”

Senator Cash said there was a “degree of urgency” to the issue, considering the government will reassess the NLAP next year ahead of its expiry in 2025.

“If the next iteration of the NLAP is to take account of any recommendations you may make about the adequacy of existing funding arrangements, it would be highly desirable for all parties to have the benefit of any ANAO report before negotiations commence,” she said.

Senator Cash took aim at Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus for shifting the onus onto the NT government and claiming the territory was responsible for administering the NLAP funds.

“With respect, if that is the case, that is all the more reason for an audit,” she wrote.

“If NLAP arrangements are such that the administration of Commonwealth funding is done at arm’s length, as the Attorney-General appears to contend, then the governance provisions in the intergovernmental agreement that allow the Commonwealth to appropriately monitor expenditure (and respond to any misuse of Commonwealth funds) are all the more important.”

NAAJA conducts the lion’s share of Indigenous legal cases in the NT, where crime has increased by double digits in the past year. The organisation employs 200 workers across Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

The Australian understands the NT Commission Against Corruption is investigating the allegations, many of which have come to light in a Federal Court case filed by Ms Atkins, who alleges she was fired from NAAJA after discovering the corrupt conduct of Ms Evans and Ms Rosas.

Ms Atkins claims Ms Rosas appointed her friends to senior positions within NAAJA, and requested her pay be given to her on a credit card so as not to alert the tax office and threaten her Centrelink pension.

Along with making the discreet $20,000 payment to Ms Rosas, Ms Atkins alleges Ms Evans left her mobile phone in offices to record unsuspecting colleagues, and bullied NAAJA workers.

NAAJA denies allegations that Ms Evans and Ms Rosas engaged in deceptive conduct, and claims Ms Atkins was fired for forging Ms Rosas’ signature on her contract extension document, securing her position as CEO – and its $350,000 salary – for a further five years.

NAAJA has also alleged Ms Atkins used company funds to buy nine vehicles, flights, clothes and artworks. Ms Atkins denies all allegations of misconduct.

Ms Rosas and Ms Evans continue to work for NAAJA.

Sources believe NAAJA will spend up to $1m on the trial, after it recruited global firm King & Wood Mallesons to represent them.

The matter is scheduled for trial from October 23.

    But agree I do.

From his last comments in the Hun…….

Where does the failing Yes campaign go from here? With lots of money and staff, the strategy is to go even harder than before.

So far, the one-sided media saturation has not worked.

Polls showing a consistent decline in support.

Doubling up with the media saturation risks alienating supporters sick to death of hearing about the Voice.

Things aren’t in your favour when things go wrong. Didn’t ride the Dandenongs often but sirens and helicopters never far away. No way motorcycling would be legal if invented today

It is a little disconcerting on roads like the Great Ocean Road and the Black Spur in a car when you meet a bike on a bend with his wheels inside the line but his helmet two feet on your side.

Well…apart from only the first bing true (and a collective right at that – the other two being personal rights which Aborigines had had since Federation like the rest of us) how does some bestowing of extra privilege on people now alter a (supposed) injustice experienced by someone else a century ago?

Suppose Aborigines could not get decent surgery in the 1950’s*, what can they/we possibly do now that will change that? What can we do now that will give someone in 1959 ingrown toenail surgery that didn’t have it then?

It is an idiotic argument made by people whose true motivations they dare not openly articulate, so they try it on people who are actually so moved by compassion that they feel thinking about it would be dirty, and cruel.

They count on the fact that the people they call cold and uncaring are in fact the exact opposite – they will give away their freedoms and equality if they think it will help.

    * which could be true, I suppose – although I would expect it was not because surgeons thought Aborigines were subhuman any more than poor white people were.

This co-dependency is something you should’ve grown out of in your teenage years, Turtlehead. Having said that, we can be forgiving for obvious reasons.

Stop dissing entire races of people, you deplorable moron. That’s what’s seen and clearly understood as pure, unadulterated racism, and after the things you’ve told us about your past and background, you’re in no position to be dissing 1.3 billion people. Most certainly in no position, you gullible twit.

JC: This is not the urbane man about town persona you’ve been displaying of late. The Girls are not going to be impressed with this Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde duality you’re expressing.
Really, put the drink or whatever down – you’ve had enough, for Gods sake.

I’ve better things to do than pander to your adolescent fantasies of “stoushes” & so on.
Get over yourself. Grow up. Discuss on the blog in good faith.

Or, safe space for a few weeks or more, to calm down. Perhaps psychiatric help may be in order.

Dover, you’re being a tad unfair because it’s obvious I was attempting to help Turts out of a pickle, and in doing so, he even became angry with me. So much for good deeds going unpunished.

Notwithstanding that, the motel owner’s first comment had nothing to do with 4.52. After the very next comment, after his putdown, Driller started a pubbling conversation. He has the self awareness of a blind snail.

    “creep”

I actually think Brand is a creep, or was one. My understanding is that he’s now happily married with children. Well, good on him, but he has definitely behaved like creepy and promiscuous narcissist in the past, however being a creepy promiscuous narcissistic isn’t illegal, and it most certainly doesn’t make him guilty of any crime. This man had females throwing themselves at him left, right and centre, and no doubt he was opportunistic with those females, and the of course, the females regretted their sexual exchanges with him.

Russell Brand is also the child of a very creepy, decadent, rotten, highly sexualised, promiscuous, coarse and vulgar culture, a culture that has lost its way.

Russell Brand used a lot of drugs

Russell Brand was a completely selfish and horrible person

    In the past.

The Russell Brand we see before us is new. He is married, clean, sober and, by all accounts, a changed man.

For those of us of a spiritual bent, he is reformed (possibly reborn).

For those more secular, he is rehabilitated.

Why then, do we all seem so determined to judge him by his past? I cannot see a criminal charge forthcoming. And he has certainly owned up to his past horrible actions.

If there is no forgiveness, we are ALL without hope.

After notmetoo, Brand saw the risks and thought that at some stage they would be coming for him because of past behavior. Consequently, he moved across to a spot where he would at least get some sympathy and would be defended. I wouldn’t trust him for a second.
