some very welcome discussion on Chris Kenny’s show tonight about the ICC going well beyond its writ.

The court was not supposed to be a free-range attack chook.
Any country which does not withdraw from it now is suspect.

I remember thinking just that when we joined up to the ICC and knowing at the time it would eventually be taken over by the forces of darkness and would be used to attack countries such as Israel, the US and maybe even Australia. It was effectively the weaponised arm of the UN human rights commission. I think it would boost the libs election prospects if they announced that if elected they would withdraw from that corrupt organization. Unfortunately under the current lot of fascists there’s no prospect of that happening.

Sonar image was rock formation, not Amelia Earhart plane: explorer

A sonar image suspected of showing the remains of the plane of Amelia Earhart, the famed American aviatrix who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937, has turned out to be a rock formation.

Deep Sea Vision (DSV), a South Carolina-based firm, released the blurry image in January captured by an unmanned submersible of what it said may be Earhart’s plane on the seafloor.

Not so, the company said in an update on Instagram.

“After 11 months the waiting has finally ended and unfortunately our target was not Amelia’s Electra 10E (just a natural rock formation),” Deep Sea Vision said.

“As we speak DSV continues to search. The plot thickens with still no evidence of her disappearance ever found.”

The image was taken by DSV during an extensive search in an area of the Pacific to the west of Earhart’s planned destination, remote Howland Island.
Earhart went missing while on a pioneering round-the-world flight with navigator Fred Noonan. Her disappearance is one of the most tantalising mysteries in aviation lore, fascinating historians for decades and spawning books, movies and theories galore.

The prevailing belief is that Earhart, 39, and Noonan, 44, ran out of fuel and ditched their twin-engine Lockheed Electra in the Pacific near Howland Island while on one of the final legs of their epic journey.

Earhart, who won fame in 1932 as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, took off on May 20, 1937, from Oakland, California, hoping to become the first woman to fly around the world.

She and Noonan vanished on July 2, 1937, after taking off from Lae, Papua New Guinea, on a challenging 4000km flight to refuel on Howland Island, a speck of a US territory between Australia and Hawaii.

They never made it.

Roads, rates and rubbish. Or not (the Tele):

Clover Moore’s City of Sydney council will donate $22,000 to Rising Tide to help it cover costs after more than 170 people were arrested at the activist group’s Port of Newcastle protest.

Ms Moore’s council ally, Jess Miller, moved a motion on Monday night to donate the money, from the city’s Contingency Fund, for Rising Tide to use on “whatever they so choose”.

‘Whatever they so choose’ will in all likelihood involve purple hair dye, amyl nitrite and nose rings.

All councillors except Liberal Lyndon Gannon voted for the donation, as part of a motion calling on Premier Chris Minns to repeal anti-protest laws.

The no-strings-attached donation could end up going to cover legal costs or fines incurred by serial protesters who blocked Australia’s busiest coal port over the weekend.

Mr Gannon labelled the donation a “slap in the face to everyone that is living in the real world”.

Correct, Mr Gannon. Correct.

Clover Moore is a NSW B-grade version of Daniel Andrews. The sort of thing that would arrive packaged at your front door if you bought Daniel Andrews on wish.com.

——————–

Townsville (or Towntown in English) was named after Robert Towns, a notorious slave trader who was well-known for the practice of ‘blackbirding’, which is Australian for abducting South Sea Islanders and forcing them to work on your sugar cane plantations. In true shit town fashion, Townsville honoured their namesake with a bronze statue for his services to racism.

Townsville has been dubbed the unofficial capital of the ‘Tropical North’ complete with all the horror that entails — oppressive heat, nightmarish disease, and wildlife that devours wayward tourists. And that’s just Flinders Street on a Friday night.

Also nicknamed ‘Brownsville’ due to its arid climate rather than the complexion of its residents, Townsville has an annual rainfall comparable to the dustier parts of the Sahara, aside from the handful of days when it’s pelted with the sort of Biblical monsoons that would get Noah’s arsehole twitching.

Unlike its neighbor Cairns, Townsville has not been overwhelmed by tourism — for good reason. Aside from being a Kmart Cairns, Townsville is known as a hotbed of youth crime and car theft, which makes it an ideal place to stop if you want an insurance payout.

Townsville is the only place in Australia where every high school has its own youth court, juvenile prison and parole office — the only reason they aren’t all packed is because no one goes to school. The city’s main tourist attraction is Reef HQ, the only living coral reef in captivity — in Townsville, even the reefs are in gaol.

Townsville also has an impressive collection of defunct sports teams, including the A-League’s Northern Fury Football Club (who were not very angry and only vaguely played football) and the Townsville Crocodiles (who managed a staggering zero titles in largely mediocre 23 seasons). The pride of Townsville is the North Queensland Cowboys, who are best known for getting thumped by the Broncos and fingered by John Hopoate.

Serpent and a total Croc: Inside lawfare plot to block $5.8bn gas projectAcademic and cultural experts exchanged emails and text messages coaching each other on how to use a rainbow serpent and crocodile man songline map to block Santos’s Barossa project in the Timor Sea.

Fairly lengthy, but here you go Zulu:

Inside lawfare plot to block Santos’s $5.8bn Barossa gas project
Geoff Chambers and Paul Garvey
8 hours ago. Updated 6 hours ago

Academic, legal and activist figures in the failed Environmental Defenders Office bid to scuttle a $5.8bn gas field near the Tiwi Islands concocted a rainbow serpent and crocodile man songline map based on guesswork and minimal consultation with Indigenous leaders, according to court documents.

Federal Court documents obtained by The Australian reveal academic and cultural experts exchanged emails and text messages coaching each other on how to use the Ampiji (mother serpent) and Jirakupai (crocodile man) to block gas company Santos’s Barossa project in the Timor Sea.

The new details emerged ahead of Federal Court judge Natalie Charlesworth finalising the matter next Tuesday and amid expectations the EDO will be ordered to pay full costs.

Justice Charlesworth in January handed down a scathing ruling after rejecting the EDO case brought on behalf of a group of Tiwi Islanders led by Simon Munkara.

Santos, whose legal costs are estimated to be close to $9m, asked the Federal Court in April to force four environmental groups to disclose communications with the EDO, amid industry fears that cashed-up environmentalists were co-ordinating finance to undermine resources projects.

The Federal Court documents reveal:

• University of Western Australia marine geoscientist Michael O’Leary sent his expert report to EDO lawyers for edits to ensure it “meets your expectations”;

• Dr O’Leary, who described himself as “just a white fella”, was open to moving the rainbow serpent “where it seems most culturally appropriate”;

• The EDO was invoiced by Indigenous consultant Antonia Burke, campaign head of Stop Barossa Gas campaign and a Tiwi Islander;

• Ms Burke used her campaign budget to pay traditional owners to engage with their research project;

• Ms Burke worked with Greens senator Dorinda Cox to draft a private senators bill called Protecting the Spirit of Sea Country;

• The EDO agreed to fund flights and accommodation for Dr O’Leary’s travel to the Tiwi Islands and offered to pay the academic for his time; and

• Professor Amanda Kearney signed Dr O’Leary’s open letter in support of Tiwi Islanders before being engaged by the EDO to act as an expert witness during legal proceedings

An affidavit and exhibits detailing correspondence between key players in the EDO case reveal Dr O’Leary, a UWA associate professor, and Ms Burke collaborated to devise a “sea country map” identifying assumed sacred locations of Mother Ampiji and the Crocodile Man Songline.

The pair, who worked together to prepare a cultural heritage report underpinning the EDO case, exchanged emails and texts about reproducing images of a serpent and crocodile based on Tiwi art.

The mapping work and cultural report, which was sent in draft form to EDO lawyers for editing, was developed ahead of meetings with Tiwi Islanders.

Just wanted to send through the map that can be used for the pipeline cultural impact assessment on Tiwi next week.

… rather than use lines and circles to indicate the location of spiritual or ancestral places (like in the report) I used some imagery instead. Just wanted to make sure it would be culturally appropriate.

Hi Antonia,

Your feed back on the Ampiji image made me think I should try and reproduce an authentic looking Crocodile from a Tiwi Artist. I found this amazing image of Crocodiles from Sam Scrubby which I have now used to represent the path of the Crocodile man Songline.

If the ampiji is round like that do you think it could be interpreted that it’s only in that space within the circle? Whereas if it was in the water stretched out if would look like it’s a part of the whole lake? I’m not saying I’m right, just throwing it out there

Antonia Burke

From: Mick O’Leary

To: Antonia Burke

Subject: Cultural Mapping of Sea Country Map

Yes, if I was NOPSEMA I would assume that this was the place or home of the Mother Ampiji …

As the Crocodile Man is a creation story, I assume that this was the period of that narrative, this is why I only have the songline going as far as the Blue Line in the Map …

Maybe I am being too scientific about this and I should just move the location of Ampiji to the area of the lake, it might be more clear to the Tiwi who might not appreciate that the Blue line represents on older higher sea level. Ultimately, I am just a white fella and the location of the resting place/home of the Mother Ampiji will be made by the Tiwi Elders and happy to move where it seems most culturally appropriate.

Mick O’Leary

Text exchanges between Dr O’Leary and Ms Burke show they also endorsed “payment for traditional owners where they provide their time and knowledge as part of a research project”.

Ms Burke told Dr O’Leary that the Ampiji in his map needed to “look more like the actual serpent” and sent through suggested images.

“If the ampiji is round … do you think it could be interpreted that it’s only in that space within the circle? Whereas if it was in the water stretched out it would look like it’s a part of the whole lake?” Ms Burke wrote in one email contained in the court documents.

On July 9 last year, Dr O’Leary told Ms Burke that he was open to moving the location of the “resting place/home of the Mother Ampiji”.

“Maybe I am being too scientific about this and I should just move the location of Ampiji to the area of the lake,” he wrote in an email.

“Ultimately, I am just a white fella and the location of the resting place/home of the Mother Ampiji will be made by the Tiwi Elders and happy to move where it seems most culturally appropriate.”

In another email he told Ms Burke that he should “try and reproduce an authentic looking Crocodile from a Tiwi Artist … to represent the path of the Crocodile man Songline”.

On December 11, 2022, Dr O’Leary had also sought input from EDO lawyers Alina Leikin and Jordina Rust on his preliminary report.

Mick O’Leary

I think I’m convinced too (big grin emoji)

15/11/2023 12:34:48 PM

Text messages included in court documents show Ms Burke telling Dr O’Leary: “Confidential: I have been working with Greens (Dorinda Cox) on drafting a private senators (sic) bill which will be listed in parliament either next sitting or August. We called it Protecting the Spirit of Sea Country.”

Mr O’Connell confirmed that the TTO, through Ms Burke, “gave advice to the Greens about a bill that related to the right to consultation”.

Opposition resources spokeswoman Susan McDonald, who as a federal parliamentarian applied for and received access to the court documents, said the revelations “confirmed the murky and dishonest world of activist lawfare enveloping the university sector”.

Senator McDonald ramped up pressure on the EDO to “reveal the extent of its foreign backers and funding trail” and said the Albanese government should commission an audit and immediately cease providing grants to the environmental legal centre.

“These documents are like an X-ray. They reveal the dark and murky world of how extreme green activism is dishonestly using and abusing Indigenous Australians and their heritage; and how complacent the university sector is allowing themselves to be used for that purpose,” Senator McDonald said.

“This is not about identifying and respecting cultural heritage; it is now about inventing cultural heritage to achieve a political outcome, and to stymie economic development and jobs in Australia’s resources sector.

“Nothing could be more disrespectful to Indigenous Australians than taking them for a ride and fabricating and misrepresenting their cultural history.”

The Barossa case was the first in a series of high-profile recent matters involving the citing of cultural songlines in the blocking of major projects.

Months after the initial injunction halting work on the Santos project, Woodside Energy was forced to stop seismic work at its $16.5bn Scarborough gas project off the West Australian coast after Indigenous activist group Save Our Songlines successfully secured an injunction from the Federal Court.

The group had argued that the seismic blasting could interfere with songlines connected to whales and turtles in the area.

But that injunction proved short-lived, with Woodside securing fresh approvals allowing it to go ahead with the work just two months later.

More recently, Regis Resources’ plans to develop the $1bn McPhillamys goldmine near Blayney in central NSW were thrown into turmoil after Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek blocked plans for a tailings dam.

Her decision came after a breakaway Indigenous group argued that the dam could interfere with the songlines of the blue-banded bee. The Orange Land Council – the main body representing traditional owners of the region – has disputed the validity of that claim.

Regis is now appealing against the minister’s decision in the Federal Court.

The Australian understands that a significant cost order against the EDO by Justice Charlesworth next week could be financially crippling for the organisation.

The EDO’s most recent annual report showed the group had just over $8.5m in cash and cash equivalents and just over $1m in financial assets on its balance sheet at the end of the 2023 financial year. After liabilities, its net assets were less than $4.9m.

The EDO collected $13.3m in revenue in 2023, including $3.7m in grants from overseas, more than $5.8m in grants from within Australia, and just over $3m in donations and bequests. State and territory government grants contributed almost $1.2m to the organisation.

After winning the 2022 election, the Albanese government reversed a 2013 decision by former Liberal prime minister Tony Abbott to defund the EDO and allocated the green lawfare outfit $8.2m over four years.

Following Justice Charlesworth’s scathing ruling against the EDO in January, Peter Dutton committed to defunding the non-government legal organisation should the Coalition win next year’s election.

The Australian in March revealed that UWA continued to support Dr O’Leary’s “right to share his research and teaching expertise and does not intend to take any further action”, after Justice Charlesworth described the academic’s conduct as being “far-flung from the proper scientific method” and falling “short of an expert’s obligation to this court”.

The Federal Court in January rejected arguments made by the EDO that the Barossa Santos project’s 262km pipeline would cause irreparable damage to First Nations people and their sacred sites. Santos produced its own study, led by anthropologist Brendan Corrigan and involving interviews with about 170 Tiwi Islanders, which concluded the pipeline would not significantly impact cultural heritage sites.

In her ruling, Justice Charlesworth said: “I have drawn conclusions about the lack of integrity in some aspects of the cultural mapping exercise, which undermined my confidence in the whole of it.”

Following the decision, Santos chief executive Kevin Gallagher sent an internal memo to employees declaring the drilling rig had been mobilised and drilling activities would commence shortly.

“This decision is not only good for Santos, but it will be of benefit to the whole industry, to the (National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority) and to government lawmakers,” Mr Gallagher said in the memo.

“In addition, it is excellent news for Northern Territory jobs and business opportunities, the NT economy, federal government revenue, export income and trade and investment relationships in Asia.”

In September, The Australian reported that the EDO had offered to pay Santos’s costs over its failed bid to block the Barossa LNG development, which if accepted would have absolved the legal environment group from providing communications it had with possible backers of the court action.

Nation’s technological edge about to become much duller

Graham Lloyd, The Australian, 23rd November, 2024

This week, while Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen was calculating the hours of sunlight that fall on Melbourne relative to London, nuclear regulators in the US gave the go-ahead for the construction of two small-scale molten salt nuclear reactors – the first electricity-producing fourth-generation plants to be approved for construction in the US.

Developer Kairos Power will need to secure an operating licence before the plant can begin operations. But the company says its fluoride salt cooled high-temperature reactor “is a novel advanced reactor technology that aims to be cost competitive with natural gas in the US electricity market and to provide a long-term reduction in cost”.

Last month, Kairos signed an agreement with Google to deploy a US fleet of advanced nuclear-power projects totalling 500 megawatts by 2035. In June, Microsoft founder Bill Gates helped break ground for the construction of a sodium test reactor in Kemmerer, Wyoming by 2030.

The plants are small and still some way off, but they are the early fruits of decades of collaborative research.

This makes the Albanese government’s decision to pull Australia from the Generation IV International Forum all the more remarkable. GIF is a grouping of countries that co-operate on research and development on next-generation nuclear-energy systems, with the aim of making fourth-generation nuclear available for deployment by 2030.

The forum’s work has identified six technologies for development: the gas-cooled fast reactor; the lead-cooled fast reactor; the molten-salt reactor; the sodium-cooled fast reactor; the supercritical water-cooled reactor; and the very high temperature reactor.

Bowen justified his decision to withdraw Australia from the research pact on the basis that solar worked better in Australia because London had only 1633 hours of sunshine in an average year, whereas Melbourne had 2362 hours.

Anyone listening to Bowen at COP29 and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles in parliament this week would think Australia had been a casual observer to what has been happening with nuclear around the world. But nothing could be further from the truth.

History is being rewritten to diminish Australia’s nuclear abilities and backstop the Albanese government’s renewables-only approach to the energy transition…

Convicted murderer Alicia Schiller approved to receive IVF treatment
?
A convicted murderer who stabbed a Geelong mother to death over $50 has been given the green light to be released from prison for IVF treatment.

A convicted murderer who stabbed a mother to death over $50 has been given the green light to be released from a Victorian maximum security prison to undergo IVF treatment.

Alicia Schiller has been approved by authorities to receive the self-funded fertility treatment while housed as an inmate at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Melbourne’s west.

It is understood that Schiller has required special escorts to attend external healthcare appointments.

Schiller was sentenced to at least 16 years in jail in 2017 after she was found guilty of murdering her Geelong housemate Tyrelle Evertsen-Mostert in a drug-fuelled rage three years prior.

While under the influence of ice, the 25-year-old jumped on Ms Evertsen-Mostert’s bed and stabbed her three times with a knife after she discovered the mum of three had taken $50 from her room to buy drugs.

Ms Evertsen-Mostert’s four-year-old son was inside the home when she was violently killed.

There are special units at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre where women can live with their children while serving sentences.

Jim Gentle, the father of Ms Evertsen-Mostert’s then partner, Jason, told the Herald Sun his son would be “very upset” to learn Schiller was planning on having a baby in prison, and receiving assistance to do so.

“I don’t think it’s the right thing, to give her a child,” he said.

The Herald Sun has been told Schiller, who is now in her mid 30s, would raise her child in the prison until it was five years old.

The child would then be placed in the care of Schiller’s mother.

Schiller has told other inmates she funded the IVF treatment by using the proceeds of a property sale.

It is believed she wants a second chance at being a mother after she was unable to raise her first-born child due to being imprisoned.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said: “We cannot comment on individuals in custody and their private health information”.

A 2010 court ruling granting an inmate the right to undergo IVF is understood to have been a major factor in the current decision to allow the treatment.

In that case, 45-year-old Kimberley Castles successfully argued she should be allowed to continue her fertility treatment, which she was getting prior to being jailed.

Her barrister Debbie Mortimer SC accused the Department of Justice of breaching its duty of care and her client’s human rights by denying her client access to IVF.

Castles, a mother-of-two, was doing an 18-month stretch at minimum security Tarrengower Prison in central Victoria for welfare fraud.

Schiller has a lengthy criminal history, dating back to when she was a teenager.

In 2008, she was charged with assault after a man was left fighting for life.

While on bail, she approached a witness and punched her in the face up to four times.

Two years later, she was jailed after she took part in a gang bashing of a 56-year-old woman who confronted her over stones thrown at her car.

In 2013, Schiller assaulted an elderly woman on a bus after the woman refused to hand over money.

She was also convicted on charges of shop theft, possessing proceeds of crime, being drunk in a public place, multiple counts of forging prescriptions and obtaining drugs by false representation.

In A Blizzard of Contradictory Numbers news:

Bowen declares mission accomplished on 2030 emissions as 2035 row heats up
Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will claim a major win in the fight to meet Australia’s 2030 emissions target after closing part of the predicted pollution “gap” with policies to get more Australians into EVs and expanding use of grid-scale batteries.

Mr Bowen will present parliament on Thursday with the latest annual official scorecard by the Department of Climate Change and Energy.

It shows decisions over the past year mean emissions will fall 42.6 per cent compared to the 2005 level.

At present emissions are tracking 3 per cent below the 2021 to 2030 “emissions budget”, the departmental analysis shows.

The National Greenhouse Inventory shows a distinctly different story.

At present Australia is in recession, and running at about 28% below 2005 CO2 emission levels. Almost all of this so-called reduction is due to booked changes in land use (policy wonks will particularly note Figure 16) – and most of that is an accounting trick (reduction in rates of land clearing from 2005 levels is counted as ‘emissions reductions’).

With only about 2% of the 28% reduction from 2005 levels due to renewables, changes in technology and industrial output etc – and changes in land use now flat-lining – Bowen is relying on a heroic 15% reduction by 2030 due to a truly massive uptake in EV’s and grid-scale batteries.

No doubt someone in the Opposition Party Room or the Meeja has read the NGI report and will use the official numbers to take the little ponce to task over this.

From the voice to anti-Semitism, does this PM have any convictions?

Every leader is beholden to others, from factional comrades to other party members. But since becoming Prime Minister, Albanese has shown he’s entirely beholden to others. He can’t hide it, and he doesn’t appear troubled by it either.

JANET ALBRECHTSEN

There is no doubt that Anthony Albanese will confront voter concerns about his leadership. Not about his style, but what he did in office. Sure, the Prime Minister hasn’t embarrassed himself by trying to insert himself into five ministries, as his predecessor Scott Morrison did. (No wonder Morrison found it so stressful leading the country.)

No, the PM’s problem is of a different nature. Albanese has not taken command of even one ministry – namely his own. To be sure, plenty of policies have been pursued by the Albanese government. But which among them are Albanese’s?

Every leader is beholden to others, from factional comrades to other party members, donors to other loud vested interests. But since becoming Prime Minister, Albanese has shown he is entirely beholden to others. He can’t hide it, and he doesn’t appear troubled by it either.

It started with the voice. The proposal to change the federal Constitution was never Albanese’s policy. And it showed. The Prime Minister was out of his depth throughout the long debate. He was not across the politics on either the Yes or No side, and he appeared unconcerned about his poor grasp of the monumental nature of the constitutional change too.

This first test of Albanese’s leadership was a harbinger of what was to come. He continues to look comfortable being beholden to others, at times resembling a lower-level bureaucrat whose most difficult day at work is deciding what to wear on casual Friday – while others do the serious work.

Though Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has put forward the eminently sensible suggestion of conducting a thorough audit of all current spending and programs, Albanese could never do this. He remains beholden to those Indigenous activists and bureaucrats who make money and careers from the status quo.

Next, consider the Prime Minister’s problem with Kevin Rudd – a problem all of his own making. Rudd’s critiques of Donald Trump were self-indulgent and hyperbolic. Trump is not known for letting even minor grudges slide – unless there’s something in it for him. Though Rudd has forged high-level connections in the US across the political divide, what he offers now is a constant reminder that Australia’s representative in America thinks Trump is “the most destructive president in history”. Deleting tweets is not the same as changing your mind.

Given our relationship with the US is a critical one, Albanese’s dilemma about Rudd is our problem. If he removes Rudd, Albanese will look like a wimp to both Americans and Australians. And just imagine what Rudd might tweet about Albanese.

Rudd should step down. No one – not even Rudd – is special enough to stay in the role given his public attacks on Trump. And the chances of that happening? Instead, Albanese – and Australia’s best diplomatic efforts in the US – are beholden to a man who described Trump as the “village idiot”.

Next, take last week’s rampant anti-Semitism in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. As Rabbi Benjamin Elton, the chief minister of the Great Synagogue in Sydney noted in these pages on Monday, NSW Labor Premier Chris Minns showed leadership by condemning the wicked trail of anti-Semitic damage and destruction. “It is unacceptable, un-Australian and it will not be tolerated,” he said.

Albanese reached for weaker words, describing it as “disturbing” and “deeply troubling”. He could have been commenting on the state of the Rabbitohs after their penultimate placing on the 2024 NRL ladder.

Alas, Albanese can’t muster up strong words on anti-Semitism – beyond motherhood slogans that it has no place in Australia – because his re-election as PM depends on winning seats with large Muslim populations. Albanese may win some votes, but few will reward him with respect.

There was more weakness from Albanese when the ICC last week issued arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant. Democrat President Joe Biden denounced it as outrageous moral relativism by the ICC to lump Israel and Hamas together. “We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security,” Biden said.

The Prime Minister of Australia was mute.

Albanese could have commanded this issue – and scored some political points too.

He could have said something like this: “Today, we are going to give notice that Australia will withdraw from the Rome Treaty that established the ICC. Our membership of the deeply flawed and highly politicised ICC is the unfortunate legacy of John Howard and Alexander Downer. We hoped that the ICC would not destroy its credibility by succumbing to anti-Israel politics. But it has.

“Therefore, we must now draw a line in the sand. Though we will continue to criticise the excessive actions of the Netanyahu government, we will always stand with Israel against threats to its security. We do not support these arrest warrants. The ICC has put us in the impossible position of having to arrest Israel’s leaders should they step foot in this country. Israel’s leaders are always welcome here.”

Albanese remained silent because he is beholden to the Penny Wong wing of the Labor Party that has long shown a withering disregard for Israel’s war of self-defence against terrorists who invaded Israel and murdered over a thousand innocent people on October 7, 2023

Next, take the recent Cbus scandal. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission is suing the $94bn industry super fund for allegedly not processing more than 10,000 disability and death benefit claims in a timely manner, leaving members $20m out of pocket.

This scandal was waiting to happen. Governance rules for industry super funds are no secret. Members of industry super funds do not get a vote on remuneration policies pursued by the trustees. They don’t usually have meetings of any kind. They don’t get to vote on anything.

No matter how incompetent or even corrupt the trustee of an industry super fund, or its directors, may be, there is no mechanism for the ultimate test of accountability – being removed by members. In a system where workers are forced to contribute 10 per cent or more of their earnings to super, it is grossly inappropriate that members are forced to be passive. Industry super funds would never agree to be bound by the rules that they sanctimoniously but rigorously enforce on ASX-listed companies.

Albanese can’t go anywhere near promising to fix the flawed governance laws that leave working class Australians worse off. Just follow Labor’s rivers of gold. Super industry funds funnel money to unions and unions fund Labor. In other words, Albanese is beholden to powerful vested interests that result in the national interest being sidelined – again.

It’s the same stinking mess of conflicts on donation reform. Albanese won’t even enter the political playing field on donations because he is a puppet for people far more powerful than him. It’s laughable that Albanese can speak of donation “reform” while carefully carving out union affiliation fees. But there it is.

The only policy that has the mark of an Albanese conviction is housing. Labor says its Help to Buy plan would help 40,000 first-home buyers and its Build to Rent plan would encourage tens of thousands of new rental homes. Let’s see.

Albanese often falls back on “shucks, I’m just a public housing boy” sentimentality as he exudes a Dorothy-like wonder at reaching high office. One can imagine the boy from the inner west whispering to his pet cavoodle, “We’re not in Camperdown anymore, Toto.” However, leadership has nothing to do with where you came from. It’s what you do when you become leader that counts.

Fatima Payman says Pauline Hanson brings ‘disgrace to the human race’ as old eligibility row resurfacesDan Jervis-BardyThe West Australian
Wed, 27 November 2024 7:27AM

A fired-up Fatima Payman says Pauline Hanson brings “disgrace to the human race” as the One Nation leader continues to hound the Afghan-born senator over her eligibility to sit in Parliament.
Senator Hanson wants an investigation into whether Senator Payman falls foul of section 44 of the constitution, which prevents foreigners and dual-citizens from sitting in Parliament.
Senator Payman – who was eight when her family fled Kabul – addressed the issue before 2022 election, explaining that her attempts to renounce her Afghan citizenship could not be completed because the Afghanistan embassy in Australia had no contact with the new Taliban regime.
She received legal advice at the time confirming she took “all reasonable steps” to hand back her Afghan citizenship, meaning she was eligible.
But Senator Hanson continues to pester Senator Payman over her citizenship status, renewing her pursuit after the Labor outcast last month launched her new political party Australia’s Voice.
The One Nation leader on Wednesday morning won Senate approval to table a letter from Senate President Sue Lines regarding Senator Payman’s eligibility, which she wanted referred to a parliamentary committee for investigation.
The major parties allowed Senator Hanson to table the documents as a matter of procedure, not because they supported her pursuit of Senator Payman.
In her response to Senator Hanson’s letter, Senator Lines said she could not take the matter further because it did not meet the requirements for the Senate to consider questions about eligibility.
Before the letter was tabled, Senator Payman defended her eligibility while unleashing a blistering attack on Senator Hanson.
“You’re not just vindictive, mean, nasty – you bring disgrace to the human race,” she said.
“You have no dignity whatsoever as a Senator in this prestigious place, where we’re supposed to bring unity, where we’re supposed to have that freedom of expression, yes, but within boundaries of confinement of respect.”
Holding a copy of the legal advice that confirmed her eligibility, Senator Payman challenged Senator Hanson – who once wore a burqa as a stunt in the Senate – to “pack her burqa and go to Afghanistan and talk to the Taliban” about her case.
“Do you want to see it (the advice) for yourself?” Senator Payman said.
“You’re in absolute denial. All that Senator Hanson does in this place is spread hatred, spread division because that’s what you’re made to do here.”

In direct contrast (the NT News):

A team of industry experts has been appointed to advise the NT Government on pathways to reform regulatory processes and reduce approvals time frames.

The eight-member taskforce, which held its first meeting on Tuesday, will be chaired by former Property Council NT president Mark Garraway.

And:

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro flagged forming the taskforce from Opposition, and has followed-through with the promise within months of taking government.

She said the taskforce would operate for six months with a view to streamline approvals and reduce red tape to grow business and investment opportunities in the Territory.

“The CLP has promised to rebuild the Territory’s economy which was trashed under the previous government, and this Taskforce, along with the Territory Coordinator, will play a key role in getting the NT moving in the right direction,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

If you really want to do it, you’ll do it. The anticipated razor-blading of the NT’s monstrous and self-perpetuating bureaucracy will save the taxpayer quite a bit of coin.

If you want to fluff a bit at a presser and then stay deep in the trough….

Meanwhile, in the UK, the government is tinkering with regulations mandating the uptake of EVs by 2030 after carmakers & trade groups warned them last week that poor sales would lead to job cuts & factory closures.

Which has now started:

ZEV Mandates Force Closure Of Vauxhall’s Luton Plant (26 Nov)

Vauxhall is planning to shut its Luton van-making factory in a move that puts 1,100 jobs at risk, as net zero rules force it to curtail sales of petrol vehicles.

Car companies face heavy fines if they do not hit targets that require 22pc of their sales to come from EVs this year, rising to 80pc in 2030. Labour has also vowed to reinstate the 2030 ban on petrol cars, which had been pushed back to 2035 by Rishi Sunak.

They’re forced to close an ICE van factory because not enough EVs are being sold to keep them on the ratio target – which is getting worse each year. So the only way they can stay on target is to not sell cars. Which is crazy.

That’s central planning for you.

To keep them afloat, the government will allow them to continue to sell ICE vehicles – which is what the market prefers – and make up on the accounting after 2030 when they’re making & selling only EVs.

Not hard to predict a mad rush for ICE vehicles in the meantime, which will be quit embarrassing for Herr Starmer & Co.

In the meantime, what are they supposed to do with the unprofitable EV production lines…mothball them?

After 275 Lithium-ion battery-caused fires in the past year in NSW, the Coroner’s Court of NSW announced on Wednesday an inquest to examine deaths and serious fires caused by the batteries.

Two hundred and seventy five Li battery fires in only one state and one year? Wow.

Last night on Sky Chris Ulhmann tagged renewables as parasitic power sources since they are useless unless backed up by electricity generated from coal, gas or nuclear. In other words, they feed off the power sources which they are striving to harm. I thought that was a brilliant expression and we should use it until it becomes accepted by the mainstream. From now on each time I mention either wind or solar I will call them parasitic renewables.

Angels have personality because they have will/ volition.

Don’t forget intellect.

But what they don’t have is a material human body, meaning artistic renditions of them are visual metaphors subject to the interpretation of both the artist and the viewer.

I suspect it was because of this, at least partly, that the eastern church came to place strict canons on the iconographic representation of supernatural beings. Thus Vasnetsov received some criticism in Russia for church frescoes done in the Western romantic style.

(Meanwhile, I’m waiting for someone to bring up dancing on pinheads.)

I note also that Hezbollah have remained silent.

New leader reluctant to stick his turbaned head over the parapet.

With who, then, are they negotiating?

This is a fair question. At present, the Lebanon ceasefire seems to be based on a Biden/Macron announcement.

The Lebanese are arguing that they don’t have the resources to field 5,000 troops to enforce Hebollocks withdrawal. And Israel is requiring the right to go back in if there’s any further nonsense.

Not sure exactly how this all sticks together.

Kim Williams was asked if he views Gina Rineheart as a threat to public broadcasting, after she used a speech to urge the Coalition to sell ABC Radio and close ABC TV.

Williams said she was an Australian citizen who has offered “a personal view”.

I don’t believe that either side of Australian politics in the mainstream would ever consider an action of that type seriously.

Because, as I said before, the ABC is trusted as the most reliable source of news and information by 81% of Australians.

If that’s his best argument he has a problem, because nowhere near 81% of Australians watch the ABC (it seems to hover around 12% across the board and has been decreasing over the long term).

Which also begs the question, how do they know it’s reliable & trustworthy if they don’t watch it?

Over to you, Mr. Dutton.

Kristian White: Police officer who tasered 95-year-old Clare Nowland found guilty of manslaughterMatt ShrivellThe Nightly
Wed, 27 November 2024 9:53AM

The police officer who tasered 95-year-old great-grandmother Clare Nowland in a south coast nursing home has been found guilty of manslaughter in the NSW Supreme Court.
Senior Constable Kristian White, 34, used his taser to subdue Clare Nowland after staff called police to the Yallambee Lodge, Cooma on May 17, 2023.
Mrs Nowland had been threatening staff and residents of the nursing home with a steak knife while she moved around the facility and the police responded to a triple-0 call for help.
In video footage played during the trial, White was heard saying “nah, bugger it” before shooting the great-grandmother in the torso with the taser.
The jury handed down its verdict at the NSW Supreme Court in Sydney, finding White guilty of the single charge of manslaughter after deliberating for 20 hours.
Mrs Nowland who had dementia fell to the ground and hit her head before dying of an inoperable brain bleed in hospital.
Crown prosecutor Brett Hatfield SC successfully argued White was criminally negligent or conducted an unlawful and dangerous act by firing the Taser in a move which was “utterly unnecessary”.
In reaching its verdict, the jury rejected arguments by defence counsel Troy Edwards SC that the 34-year-old officer’s use of the Taser was a proportionate response to the threat that Mrs Nowland posed.

The Truth About AI’s Impact on Meaning and Democracy! | John Vervaeke

Summary In this extensive discussion, cognitive scientist John Vervaeke articulates concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on meaning and democracy. He explores the connection between the current meaning crisis—a widespread sense of disconnection and lack of purpose—and the influence of AI on human cognition and social structures. Vervaeke discusses how AI can manipulate attention and perception, leading to a distortion of reality and a detachment from genuine social connections. He emphasizes the need for an ecology of practices, including philosophical and contemplative traditions, to cultivate meaning and support rational discourse in democracies. The conversation also touches on the historical patterns of societal crises, collective intelligence, the importance of community in self-correction, and the philosophical implications of meaning derived from AI interactions. ### Key Points #### 1. The Meaning Crisis and AI – The current political landscape is highly polarized, resembling a culture war. – There is a perception that traditional systems to solve conflicts are failing, leading to a “meaning crisis.” – AI may worsen this crisis by providing attractive content detached from reality, manipulating human attention and salience. #### 2. Distinction between Truth and Bullshitting – A concept discussed is Harry Frankfurt’s distinction between lying (conveying false things with intent) and “bullshitting” (manipulating attention without concern for truth). – Modern advertisements often exemplify this by focusing on catchiness rather than truthfulness. #### 3. Evolutionary Perspective on Meaning – Human fulfillment is often derived from contributing to the group, but AI threatens this as it may outperform humans in many tasks. – AI can shape how we perceive our connections and contributions, potentially leading to disconnection from real group dynamics. #### 4. Religious Relationships with AI – Vervaeke raises the concern that humans may begin forming religious-like connections with AI, interpreting it as a trusted source of knowledge and understanding. – Such relationships might lead individuals to rely solely on AI’s perspective, limiting their capacity for independent thought. #### 5. Mental Health and Vulnerability – The discussion mentions rising rates of mental health issues, particularly among the youth, and a concerning trend of considering suicide. – Fantasy worlds, including those created by AI, may provide an escape from reality, which is dangerous and can lead to deeper disconnection. #### 6. The Importance of Rationality and Dialogue – Vervaeke argues that democracy relies on dialogical rationality, where ideas are challenged and self-correction occurs through discourse. – There is a need to focus on cultivating rationality skills rather than just relying on AI outputs. #### 7. The Role of Philosophy and Ecologies of Practices – Society must cultivate an ecology of practices—various methods for enhancing rationality and meaning through community engagement. – Historical precedence shows that during crises, new philosophical and spiritual movements can rise to restore meaning and communal connection. #### 8. Socratic Insight and Democratic Health – Socrates emphasized the need for self-examination; the unexamined life is not worth living. – Current political climates often discourage this self-examination, leading to rigid ideological positions instead of constructive dialogue. #### 9. Historical Patterns and Potential for Renewal – Historical examples demonstrate that societies can emerge from crises through philosophical evolution, collective intelligence, and dialogical practices. – The discussion suggests that individuals can be instrumental in fostering environments that encourage such renewal today. #### 10. Final Thoughts on AI and Human Engagement – Vervaeke stresses that while AI holds great potential for changing society, its impacts must be navigated consciously to promote genuine meaning rather than superficial connections. – The philosophy of wisdom and practices from the past may offer pathways to create a better future amidst the challenges presented by AI and meaning crises.

I’ve been comparing the header painting with this by Burne-Jones.

Wondering what each artist is trying to convey. The Vasnetsov has an odd sense of malevolence about it…is this angel a Luciferian type? Does it appear as an angel of light but is really something quite different?

A few weeks ago I visited Cragside, the extraordinary Northumberland home and grounds designed and built by the Victorian industrialist Lord William Armstrong and his wife.

In the house there is a large display of (mainly) Victorian art. While I am very far from an art historian, I was struck by two recurring themes: sentimental representations of death (faithful dogs lying by dead masters, sheep and dead lambs, weeping families mourning a dead child) – and angelic messengers in various situations.

The personalities of the models for the angels (which seemed to be all female) generally shone through – as with the Vasnetzov above. Which left a lasting impression that, rather than embodying any serious religious symbolism, this was a particular decorative fashion of the era.

DNC Staffers Fired After Election Reduced to Begging for Money With a GoFundMe Account

As the Gateway pundit recently reported, after the election was over, the DNC fired a large number of staffers with no advance warning and no severance pay of any kind. Their union was outraged.

It’s even more stunning when you consider the fact that the Harris campaign had more than a billion dollars to work with and yet these staffers were not taken care of in the end.

Now, they have been reduced to begging people for donations through a GoFundMe account that was set up for them.

BoN:“If they have to actually tell a wimpy 100 MWh battery to dribble out power over 4 hours it’s all on a knife edge, looks like.”

They mention the “reliability standard”, which may mean simply that having an extra few MW means they can afford to lose a generator and not go down. IOW, they have enough if everything goes right, but not if something goes wrong. The small amount from the battery can “fix” that, and make sure even if something goes kaput, they won’t need to load-shed to keep the grid up.

Damn absentee neighbour has just put a young bull in the paddock on our boundary. Neighbour insists that he will be preoccupied with his own harem of young heifers. We beg to differ, previously having had to sell our bull who was a fence jumper.

Not surprisingly the young blood took immediate interest in one of our young cows who is “on heat”. These young ladies are shameless at this time – she immediately paraded along our fence line & he immediately lost interest in his own harem.

Unfortunately, neighbour knows little about cattle & we will now have to put a “hot wire” along the top of the entire length of the boundary fence where the bull is grazing at the moment. Doubtful that he will contribute to the cost. Too hot to begin until next week. Fortunately he will only find the heifer irresistible for about 24 hours.

Paywallian: ABC ‘must get better, serve truth not causes’: Williams
ABC chairman Kim Williams says the public broadcaster must get better at ‘exposing misinformation, correcting disinformation and arming Australians with the skills needed to counter’ the two phenomena.

1.  As a matter of tactical necessity, ABC staff will ignore what the chairman is asking of them because to indulge him would encourage the delusion that the board or the management – not the staff collective – actually run the joint.

2. ABC editorial staff see themselves as the propaganda arm of the Australian Greens, attacking the Stupid Frigging Liberals and the ALP from the loony left. (Note: news scripts in ABC news bulletins read like Greens press releases). No ABC manager or chairman will ever overcome the iron will of the staff collective to run the place according to the collective’s rules without any direction from outsiders, who will simply be ignored – with zero consequences.

The ABC will demand — and get — $A1.1 billion p.a. even after its TV and radio ratings drop to zero. The ABC will harrass and fact-check any MP bucking the system into silence.

A 100 MWh at that rate is a cool $1.75 million. For four hours’ work…

A Tesla car battery of 100KWh costs of the order of $20,000 so a 100 MWh battery ought to be about $20 million. $1.75 million for half an afternoon seems a tad excessive. Nice return on capital though. We begin to see why so many scammers are keen on renewable energy.

“Shaving” (buying off peak, selling on peak) is what they do.
And don’t forget they need to pay back the capital, with interest, in under 10 years or they’re screwed ($20M for the battery and no doubt more for ancillaries and staff, so they’ve gotta get, what? $100M or more back).

I think Jim Rickards has a good understanding of the direction of world events. This is in his latest newsletter:

Remember Biden? He’s till the President and He’s Still on the Road to WWIII.

Joe who? Even close followers of politics wouldn’t be blamed for having that reaction if someone asked about the status of Joe Biden. He barely campaigned for himself when he was running for re-election as president and did almost nothing to support Kamala Harris in her campaign.
Biden’s only noteworthy actions were to torpedo Harris’s slim chances by calling Trump supporters ‘garbage’ at the same time Harris was conducting a rally next to the White House. Of course, Trump supporters turned out to be more than half the electorate on 5 November.

Since the election, Biden has fallen completely off the radar screen except for a few videos of him trying to walk to the beach and almost falling face down in the sand.Does Biden even matter anymore? Unfortunately, yes. He’s still the president of the United States and will be until noon on 20 January, 2025. That’s almost 60 days during which he could start World War III.In fact, according to this article, that seems to be what he’s trying to do.
Biden has just authorised Ukraine to use US-supplied ATACMS intermediate-range missiles to strike inside Russia. The ATACMS have a range of about 200 miles, just long enough to hit Moscow. They can also hit many Russian targets closer than Moscow, including nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons storage areas and radars.

The green light to fire ATACMS at Russia will also apply to UK and French cruise missiles such as the Storm Shadow and SCALP.
Russia has responded to every new weapons system given to Ukraine by increasing its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, especially the power grid.
The ATACMS are the latest in a long line of weapons systems provided to Ukraine including Stinger missiles, Patriot anti-missile batteries, Abrams tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, HIMARS rocket launchers, drones, and long-range artillery. Last summer, Biden delivered F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine as the latest wonder weapon.
All these systems have failed. Armoured vehicles have been left burning on the battlefield. The Patriot anti-missile batteries have been systematically destroyed by Russian hypersonic missiles. The artillery is useless because Ukraine has little ammunition, and the US can’t manufacture the 155mm shells in large quantities. The F-16s have been shot out of the sky. That’s not surprising because the pilots were ill-trained.

Will the ATACMS make a difference? No, because the Russians have already moved their most valuable assets out of range and have a proven ability to destroy the launchers or shoot the missiles down as needed.
What’s the point? That’s an easy question. Biden doesn’t care about Ukraine, and he knows they will lose the war. He just wants to keep Ukraine fighting until 20 January so that when the collapse of Ukraine happens, he can blame Trump.

Biden has spent the past 50 years as a stupid and now demented politician who blames others for his failures. The collapse of Ukraine will be no different. Let’s just hope we don’t end up in World War III before Trump is sworn in.

I really feel for the walloper who tasered the 95 year old. Guilty of manslaughter. Hobson’s choice.

Not really, there are times when a knife wielding person needs to be dealt with even more harshly than a taser. Like a a bullet.

In this case he could simply step out of her way.
What was she going to do, chase him while hanging onto her zimmer frame?
People with that lack of judgment of a situation should not be in the force.

Filthy Catholics.

Every single one of their priests is a peddler, and their establishment hides it. Nobody else does it, just the Micks and their Papist heresy.

Heresy, I say! Nobody else! Catholics! Emerging from tunnels! Like lizards! Preying! Covering up! Only them!

Oh wait (the CM):

A top Queensland silk has savaged the Uniting Church for pursuing a charge against a whistleblower accused of leaking sensitive information about one of Australia’s worst child sex offenders to the media.

Monster pedophile Ashley Paul Griffith is set to be sentenced later this week for the abuse and rape of dozens of little girls inside Queensland childcare centres – the majority being in Brisbane – from 2003 to 2022.

19 years. Quite the time spent at large.

Prior to his arrest last year Griffith was accused of kissing a young girl at a Uniting Church childcare centre in Queensland, but not only were there no charges, he was “welcomed back” by the centre with minimal restrictions.

That could have ended his working with children card right there. But no:

Former Uniting Church childcare worker Yolanda Maria Borucki, 60, is accused of tipping-off Nine’s A Current Affair in August 2023 that she had helped report Griffith, who was her colleague at the time, to Queensland police in 2021 over the incident.

It is alleged that Ms Borucki leaked sensitive information – including the Uniting Church’s internal investigation report into the incident – to the TV news program via email in the days before she officially finished her employment with the church.

And:

In his closing address defence barrister Patrick McCafferty, KC, questioned the Uniting Church’s motives in complaining to police about his client.

“Perhaps it’s a feeble attempt at reputation management to distract attention away from permitting Griffith to work with children,” he said.

Feeble indeed. Also:

“It’s difficult not to form the view that the Uniting Church has persisted with this charge because of the abject humiliation it suffered by reason of what can only have been either a fundamentally flawed or an inadequate internal investigation into Ashley Griffith a pedophile it employed.

“That investigation enabled Griffith to continue to work with children. It permitted Griffith to return to work subject to mild conditions, including he be required to review two policies, one of which was called the relationships with children policy.

“Not simply ironic, the prosecution in this case seek to hold Ms Borucki criminally liable for an apparent breach of Uniting Church policy, it’s brazen hypocrisy in the circumstances.”

Uniting. Church. Policy.

Griffith, 46, who has remained behind bars since his arrest in August 2023, pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court in September to 307 child sexual offences.

Unbelievable.

This isn’t a swing at the Uniting people (although they certainly deserve it in this instance), but an illustration that this sort of thing is by no means limited to followers of the shamrock.

The Senate voted 46-11 in favour of ordering Thorpe out of the chamber until the end of tomorrow.

The Coalition, Labor, Ralph Babet, One Nation, Jacqui Lambie, and David Pocock voted for the suspension.

Naturally the Greens voted no. Thorpe was not in the chamber and did not vote.

By the look of things 18 other Senators had something better to do than maintain a fig leaf of self discipline.

Hobson’s choice?
You must be kidding.
She presented zero threat to him.
He and his partner spoke to her for just three minutes before he said ‘Bugger it’ and tasered a tiny 95 year old.
Lazy, cavalier and grossly excessive

Lazy, cavalier and grossly excessive

Oh yes.

Once upon a time the jacks were people you called when you needed help, and you got a) at least one six foot bloke with a bit of common sense, discretion and life experience, and b) the help you wanted.

I think (will be corrected) that this copper had twelve years in. If that’s the case, he’s never seen an angry man in that time, let alone dealt with one, and has in all likelihood never left a police station before then.

Supercop 2024 clearly met his match in the shape of a 95 year old, 45kg woman who was effectively immobile. Steak knife, or no steak knife.

This pudgy, callow imbecile got his right whack by twelve men good and true, and no mistake. Weak as piss.

Large church bureaucracies are even more opaque than government ones and the average pew warmer has little idea what they get up to, for good or ill, in her name. This is just one instance where churches are failing to live up to their own standards.

So who will be the first Stupid Frigging Liberal federal leader to call out the climate scam as an anti-scientific religion for athiests?

I don’t think it will be Mr Potato Head (a.k.a Dr Mutton — h/t Rabz).

The climate denier insult still works too well as a shut-up censorship button for the loony left.

So we will keep tip-toeing around the truth for another decade or more while our prosperity is flushed down the toilet because we’ve put political parasites who’ve never had real jobs in charge of our future.

Until the silent majority of Australian normies start getting aggro about having their standard of living hijacked by political saboteurs we will continue to lose the cultural argument.

Bending over backwards to accommodate an employee who was caught kissing a toddler.
I’m willing to wager a passionate kiss on the lips, not an absent minded peck on the top of head that was the subject on the report.
Didn’t know he also offended in Pisa Italy.
Clearly a member of a very successful paedophile ring.
