Chris Minns replacing Dominic Perrottet fazes me not at all. Apparently, Minns is on the right side of things within the Labor Party. Those on the right in the Labor Party are generally pragmatists. I think of Hawke and Keating on the federal stage and Neville Wran in NSW. I have done no thoroughgoing analysis but my instinctive view is that it is better to have a right-centred Labor person in power than a wishy-washy Liberal like Malcom Turnbull or a Liberal like Perrottet who, to my way of thinking, is all hat and no cattle.
It’s all very well to be a social conservative in your private life, but if you bring none of it into parliament and executive government what use is it? Did Perrottet root out the sexualisation of children in the classroom or prevent children from being propagandised about climate change. I must have missed it, if he did. Certainly, listening to Mark Latham would suggest that the problem, and problem it is, remains rampant in public schools.
The real disappointment is not in Minns himself but in the times in which he comes into office. They will cripple his performance whatever he does. He will inherit the mad climate polices of the Perrottet-cum-Matt Kean regime without ever having opposed them. He will pursue the destruction of NSW’s reliable energy system because that is part and parcel of the zeitgeist systematically created over the past forty years and more by the UN, the IPCC, and Western governments. Scott Morrison reluctantly bowed to its strictures. Minns can’t afford to show any reluctance.
Then he’s beholden to unions which apparently tipped in a lot of campaign funding. Good luck taking on the teachers’ union in order to improve and clean up schooling. Climate hysteria and wokeness are not something Neville Wran had to face or any pragmatic Labor leaders of yore had to face. It’s a whole new ballgame. Bear in mind that on a range of major issues of the day – climate change, recently Covid, Aboriginal entitlement, victimhood, transgenderism, DEI, ESG, and so on – political parties are on close enough to a unity ticket. In other circumstances in other times, Minns may have shined. As it is, he is bound to leave NSW worse than he found it. But, likely, in no worse state than would have been engineered by Perrottet and Kean. Tweedledee or Tweedledum.
Minns is very similar to Bill Shorten in appearance and manner.
What’s Minnsy’s background?
Mum went on a sea voyage unaccompanied?
Minns and his minions. Nobody knows who any of them are, but Paul Murray’s mate Rose Jackson is about to get even louder and more annoying. BTW nobody under 45 should be allowed in an upper house, anywhere.
An old style pragmatic Labor man, but not an old style set of Party members surrounding him.
Tears before bedtime.
He doesn’t have a personal mandate and is thus beholden to the unions.
Hence the first decision announced is to lift the cap on public sector wages.
Dandrews gets summoned to China. Minns’ first comment is to wait and see what is decided at the illegal National Cabinet. Belt and road in all states here we come.
Mini Minns may cause Mad Max. Get your pig farm methane plant going before it’s too late. Who runs Bartertown?
I even had a member of my family say that Perrottet will not be a good politician as he is an Opus Dei Catholic. My reply to that was that he doesn’t behave like he adheres to Opus Dei, he doesn’t seem to espouse any conservative policies in parliament. Apart from having lots of kids his religion seems to be so personal, like Gladys’, that you can’t find it.
I heard last night that Minns relies a lot on Prue Carr who is a reasonable MP.
(Ideally the Upper House would be appointed with half rotation by the Lower House, which would be fully reselected by Sortition during each cycle.).
[Each appointee or lottery winner would be subject to approval of Local* (and also Federally, State) legislatures and a confirmation vote by their “electorates”.
*Which could also be a “town meeting”.
(Missing a “]” ).
Anyway, Minns promised to keep power stations operating . That’s a good start. The wage hikes might be a compromise; some get higher wages, some others get performance managed to leave.
Is that the same weapons-grade airhead Rose Jackson who made the “going out to buy a pavlova” remark on Q&A because she had no idea what a “Pavlov’s dogs” reference might mean?
Talks ninety-to-the-dozen with the absolute certainty of someone who has nothing of any value to contribute?
Interesting that Matt Kean doesn’t want the leadership role. His job is to undermine the Libs and they are too stupid to see it. He doesn’t need to be the leader to do that.
Jumping into the opposition leader’s job fresh after an election defeat is as good as a guarantee you will never be Premier. Kean knows that.
Surprised to hear Minns is only the 3rd Labor leader to win Office in NSW since The War.
The series of Labor governments that ended with Renshaw in 1965 lasted 26 years, Askin and his successors lasted 11 years, Wran et al 12 years, Greiner & Fahey 7 years, Carr et al 17 years, O’Farrell to Parrothead 11 years.
So while Minns mightn’t last long, Labor could expect at least 4 Terms historically.
I can’t watch Rose Jackson when she is on Sky sometimes. Her volume switch seems to be broken at two or three levels higher than it should be.
Matt Kean is far more dangerous to conservatives than Minns. I cannot understand why NSW liberals have not thrown him out long ago.
Wasn’t Minns going to ban native forestry in NSW? That’s going to work out well as there’s now a chronic shortage of timber everywhere.
Rohan, the “Great Koala National Park” between Kempsey and Grafton will cause timber shortages, wreck businesses and create unemployment whilst making the bush less suitable for koalas and more suited to conflagrations.
But it will provide temporary green therapy to the envious, purposeless and insecure urbanites.
I know virtually nothing of NSW politics. All I know is that Perrotet was an abysmal failure. He is a devout Catholic. But who would know? Catholicism doesn’t demand capitulation on fashionable ideas. Au contraire. See the martyrs.
Perrotet is a wimp. Much like the current Liberal party, nationally speaking. What a vomit-inducing, temporizing rabble they are. They remind me of the vomit-inducing bishops (with certain noble exceptions) of the Catholic Church—including, par exemplar, our current Pope (if he is the pope. Certain interesting questions there.)
I know sh*t when I smell it. In the Libs, and in the Catholic Church.
Actually, what I’ve said is to unfairly devalue sh*t, which is an excellent compost, leading to new life. Not so the deadly ideas of the modernist Libs and Catholics.
