In 536 a major volcanic explosion in Java caused a nuclear winter throughout much of the world. Records show that sun-gods died, as they do when they play up, throughout many cultures. A similar explosion in the 1400’s bc was a likely cause of the Red Sea changes and plagues of various sorts, including insect ones, in Egypt around that period.

I try not to think about the various super-volcanos around the world and how they could flare up – for example, Taupo in New Zealand, and Yellowstone in the US. Hairy wants to drive through Yellowstone but I keep finding reasons not to; it’s don’t mention the super volcano, and somehow I knock it off the agenda whenever it appears. In Chile we drove through an area where the debris from two volcanos adjacent to each other still layered the vegetation and roads. One not happy Lizzie, only comforted by the thought that at least it had already gone off.

Earthquakes are another not like. I’ve been in a few smallish ones and wouldn’t enjoy being in a biggish one at all.

Basically the new charges against Trump are for holding the opinion that the 2020 election was rigged. In respect of the Jan 6th get together the FBI had already investigated this and found:

“scant evidence” that the riot was an organized plot to overturn the official results of the presidential election.

We know there was FBI involvement at Jan 6th, that all deaths were of protestors and by comparison the Brett Kavanagh confirmation protests, in the same buildings, and the George Floyd/antifa/BLM riots were much worse, damaging and a threat to national security.

Joe Biden to ask Congress to fund Taiwan arms via Ukraine budget

White House request designed to speed up weapons transfers to Taipei amid rising threat from China

The White House will ask Congress to fund arms for Taiwan as part of a supplemental budget request for Ukraine, in an effort to speed up the supply of weapons to the country amid the rising threat from China.

The Office of Management and Budget will include funding for Taiwan in the supplemental request as part of an effort to accelerate the provision of weapons, according to two people familiar with the plan.

If passed by Congress, Taiwan would get arms through a US taxpayer-funded system known as “foreign military financing” for the first time. The White House is expected to submit the request this month.

The request comes on the heels of a White House announcement that the US would supply Taiwan with $345mn in weapons from stockpiles for the first time, under a system known as “presidential drawdown authority” that has been used to send weapons to Ukraine.

The decision to include Taiwan funding in the supplemental budget and use PDA to supply weapons underscores a rising urgency to help Taipei. Critics of the current Taiwan strategy have urged Washington to supply weapons more quickly as China increases military activity around the country.

“This would be a monumental step that signals how far the US government is now willing to go to accelerate deterrence across the Taiwan Strait,” said Eric Sayers, managing director at Beacon Global Strategies, a Washington consultancy.

“For decades we have chosen to only sell Taiwan military equipment but now?.?.?.?we are seeing both the tools of drawdown authority and foreign military financing be deployed, just as they have been so successful in Ukraine,” Sayers added.

According to the US-Taiwan Business Council, a pro-Taiwan lobby group, Taipei is still awaiting delivery of $23bn worth of weapon sales, including harpoon missiles and surveillance drones, that were approved by successive US administrations. Some sales were announced more than five years ago. US military commanders have frequently expressed frustration with the slow transfer of weapons to Taiwan to enhance its security.

The White House declined to comment or reveal details about how much money would be requested for Taiwan.

The eventual congressional vote on the supplemental budget — which will focus predominantly on new military assistance for Ukraine — will be the first test of support for Kyiv in the current Congress.

A group of far-right House Republicans recently sought and failed to use the annual defence bill to restrict US support for Ukraine, a sign that even a small group of lawmakers could imperil or delay future assistance.

Packaging support for Taiwan, which has very strong bipartisan support in Congress, into the Ukraine budget may help the administration and pro-Kyiv Republicans win over members who might otherwise be opposed.

“Adding supplemental funding for Taiwan will put some House Republicans in a more difficult position since many who oppose Ukraine funding remain in favour of supporting Taiwan,” said Zack Cooper, an Asia security expert at the American Enterprise Institute think-tank.

Last year, Congress passed legislation approving $10bn in “foreign military financing” for Taiwan over five years. It would have been the first time that US taxpayers would fund weapons for Taiwan. But the congressional appropriation bill did not authorise the FMF funding.

“Observers are watching closely to see if Congress can put its money where its mouth is this year,” added Cooper. “The supplemental is arguably the best chance to do so.”

The Chinese embassy in Washington said China “firmly opposed US military ties with, and arms provision, to Taiwan”, over which Beijing claims sovereignty. It called on Washington to “stop posing risks to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

BON,

“Who is Farked?” – would suggest America under the Biden Crime Family!

I thought Etna was about to go off when we were there at the restaurant at the top, where you could see the lava flow from a recent explosion had taken out part of the roadway, a fence and a small cottage. However, the roaring noise approaching like the proverbial freight train, was only the sound of sixty powerful motorbikes breaching the last uphill rise for the lunch already set out for the riders, aging rock-‘n-roll members of a European motorcycle club. Sigh of relief from me, breathing again. Hairy completely unfazed. You’d guessed, I accused him. He had the good grace lose his smirk.

Every attack like this on Trump simply adds to his support base. I don’t see this as being any sort of false flag operation to get Trump as the candidate because he’s unelectable. He’s clearly well on the money right now and I hope he stays that way.

After all that has gone on, and the total loss of the rule of law under the Democrats (just look at Biden!), it may be that the only way out for America is to vote Trump back in. Perhaps even Democrats will come to see this as a medicine that has to be taken.

I just hope that President Trump can stay the distance till 2024, safely.

The Beloved, one eye open and used to the same thing at ground level in PNG remarked “Is that an earthquake?”. “Yes, my dear. Nothing to worry about.” Snort.

We had a beauty in the Highlands. You could see the ground undulating and all the locals simply sat down rather than being knocked down. When I told Mum, she told me about the one she experienced in the New Hebrides that changed the course of the river.

Pence is a one trick pony. Sorry to say it, but that’s his schtick.

Much was made of his “only have dinner with his wife”, and no “meetings with wymminses” made much of in the press. Much laughter from the usual suspects but now I distrust it. I have no doubts about his moral perspicacity, but his motives in blaring it, as if he’s creating a persona fit for Middle America.

I believe Pence was in a very difficult spot at the very end and I have sympathy for both their positions. Trump believed and believes to this day that the election was stolen. Pence wanted to see some evidence this was so in order not to accept the elector ballots, but it wasn’t available other than the strongest suspicions. Pence felt, that he just couldn’t prevent the Republic from moving ahead without a shred of evidence.

While we were away my sweet fifty-year-old man-child, as his sometime ex-partner and mother of his (also) autistic son calls him, purchased two books for me in a second-hand shop, one of those he regularly haunts. One book is an interesting hardcover, published fifty years ago on Roman Towns and thus more than a little out-of-date, but still of interest. The other is a simple school primer ‘A New French Course’, from long ago. I wonder why he thinks I need it. I am idly reading Lecon 15, La Ferme de L’Oncle Andre. It’s a fascinating read.

Quelquefois, Robert et Nicole vont passer leurs vacances a la campagne. Leur oncle Andre a une petite ferme non loin de la ville ou ils habitent.

Que fait l’once Andre? It travaille dur. En ete Il laboure la terre et soigne ses animaux et en hiver il fait des grandes passions et les voluptes avec ses animaux .. non .. c’est interdit en Catallaxy … meme si c’est apres la tombee de la nuit de Dover.

I’ve beefed it up a bit at the end because it really is terminally boring stuff.

I think the biggest eruption in human pre-history happened 78,000 years ago…

“The Toba eruption (sometimes called the Toba supereruption or the Youngest Toba eruption) was a supervolcano eruption that occurred around 74,000 years ago at the site of present-day Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia. It is one of Earth’s largest known explosive eruptions. The Toba catastrophe theory holds that this event caused a severe global volcanic winter of six to ten years and contributed to a 1,000-year-long cooling episode, leading to a genetic bottleneck in humans.

He’s always been a decent person who lives by what he’s preached. It’s why Trump chose him. His voting in the senate couldn’t have been more slanted to rightwing causes.

Instead of pretending to be stoic and loyal, he could have advised.

WTF, advised what, to whom? Trump? He did! He told Trump he had no evidence to prevent the vote and wasn’t going to refuse not to call he electors. We still do not have solid evidence that could be used in a court. Just very strong suspicions. He certainly had none then.

Pence played the long game, then shot himself in the foot when interviewed by Tucker Carlson.

Pence was totally fake newsed over that comment. He was responding to the very first part of the question.

We are booked to visit Akrotiri on Santorini, excavated from the volcanic ruins like Pompeii and Herculaneum were from Vesuvius many centuries later. The people, sharing a basic Minoan culture in this tradeways island, enjoying that same peaceful Cretan high culture you can see in spades in Crete’s Heraklion museum, had already fled when the volcano blew, but plenty of pots and other things were left behind. When I visited Santorini some years ago they were still excavating. On our September/October cruise we will get a chance to see it all on one of the tours. Looking forward to it very much.

What’s not to like about ancient history and the lives of all the aeons who have gone before us? Our time here is short, just as theirs was, but the cultures linger on.

The other Kittehs I miss are Ms Doolittle, Annie and Nilk. They went to a demmo and uploaded photos. Can’t remember what it was about, but in Melbourne you’ll demonstrate over anything. ?

Nilk was a bit of a favorite of mine – IIRC she still had a blog as late as a couple of years ago.
I was resuscitating an old hard drive when I came across a cache of old stuff and she was complaining about a headstrong 3 year old daughter who decided she was going to do something her way.
“But you’ll get sick doing it like that.”
” No I won’t!” came the defiant response.
“Yes you will”
“No, no, no I won’t”
Kid must have been a redhead.
Another one whose presence would have been valuable was Zoe Brain. Definitely valuable insights.

As you enter Santorini you are in a gouged out cauldera. You find out later that there were numerous major eruptions to have caused that major chasm. So yes, 1600 is one date, 1400’s is another.

Cool it with the anti volcanic globalist boiling catastrophe talk.

I prefer the Mt. Toba eruptions at 74,000 years ago. In an anthropology forum I suggested it might account for the mtDNA constriction that points to a huge drop in human population numbers. Anthropologists laughed at my idea. Six months later that argument was published and since then the debate rages on. It is still undecided if Mt. Toba did account for the constriction point but there is little doubt that the human population did undergo a crash. That’s what I like about paleoanthropology, the evidence for human evolution is so scant we can create arguments that support our preconceptions. Paleoanthropology is fun, perhaps because it is fuzzy.

Make sure you let him know you want plenty of pain relief

Good news from the world of science (hopefully).

Scrambler therapy relieves chronic pain in up to 90% of patients (1 Aug)

Researchers from Johns Hopkins Medicine, however, believe there’s a non-invasive treatment for chronic pain that can not just alleviate it short-term but potentially can make the relief permanent.

In a review of 381 randomized clinical trials, the team found that scrambler therapy – which delivers electrical stimulation via electrodes to areas surrounding the source of chronic pain – could offer significant relief in 80-90% of patients. And it may be more effective than transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), which similarly uses electrical stimulation via electrodes, but directs the currents at the pain nerves.

“Scrambler therapy is the most exciting development I have seen in years – it’s effective, it’s noninvasive, it reduces opioid use substantially and it can be permanent,” said lead author Dr. Thomas Smith, professor of oncology and medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Sounds very promising indeed. Pain inflicted Cats should alert their doctors about it and see if it could be made available here.

Saw Sports Specialist about 10 years ago recommended by SIL who was Physio GWS – said I can take $10K off you to try and fix, but if you are not having steroid injections in knees every 3 months and not taking painkillers, then don’t bother

Only need walking stick/leki poles for going down hill – uphill ok, and I can haul myself up stairs with railing and come down stairs sideways

Usually don’t use walking stick

After 4 minor Ops & 1 Major Op over last 2 years with minor day surgery cutting SCC out coming up in 2 weeks – prefer to avoid knee surgery and keep limping along

Would be useless at rehab – slack as they come

Report reveals trial treachery of lying Drumgold

The ACT chief prosecutor lied to the Supreme Court, engaged in serious malpractice and grossly unethical conduct and broke the ‘golden rule’ in the Higgins-Lehrmann rape case.
By janet albrechtsen and stephen rice
August 2, 2023
29 minute read

ACT chief prosecutor Shane Drumgold knowingly lied to the Supreme Court, engaged in serious malpractice and grossly unethical conduct, “preyed on a junior lawyer’s inexperience”, betrayed that junior lawyer who trusted him, and treated criminal litigation as “a poker game in which a prosecutor can hide the cards,” the Sofronoff Inquiry has found.

In findings that are certain to end Mr Drumgold’s career as ACT Director of Public Prosecutions and may lead to criminal prosecution against him for perverting the course of justice, inquiry head Walter Sofronoff KC ruled that every one of the allegations made by Mr Drumgold that sparked the inquiry was baseless.

In the report, obtained by The Australian, Mr Sofronoff found that Mr Drumgold had lost objectivity during the prosecution of Bruce Lehrmann for the alleged rape of Brittany Higgins and “did not act with fairness and detachment as was required by his role”.
Read Next

The ACT government received Mr Sofronoff’s report on Monday but has refused to release the findings until the end of the month, as senior officials pore over the 600-page document.

Mr Sofronoff said he was “deeply disturbed” by Mr Drumgold’s ignorance of ethical principles and accused him of a “Pilate-like detachment”, invoking the moment Pontius Pilate washed his hands of Jesus’s fate, letting the mob decide who should be crucified.

Among the astonishing catalogue of misconduct and dishonesty found by the inquiry against Mr Drumgold are:

– That he made representations to the Chief Justice Lucy McCallum in the proceedings against Mr Lehrmann that were “untrue” and “an invention of his own”;

– That he was guilty of a “serious breach of duty” by failing to comply with the “golden rule” of disclosure that sits at the heart of a fair trial by failing to disclose documents where there was “simply no doubt” that those police investigation documents should have been disclosed;

– That the DPP failed to adopt the rule of thumb used by wise and experienced prosecutors – “if in doubt, disclose”;

– That the DPP “kept the defence in the dark about the steps he was taking to deny them the documents that meant they were in no position to mount a challenge”;

And that he “constructed a false narrative to support a claim of legal professional privilege”.

“The result has been a public inquiry, which was not justified by any of his allegations, that has caused lasting pain to many people and which has demonstrated his allegations to be not just incorrect, but wholly false and without any rational basis,” Mr Sofronoff concluded.

“The cost of a six-month public inquiry – in time and money, in lost work, and personal and professional consequences – has been huge,” he said.

Even if Mr Drumgold had succeeded in dishonestly preventing Mr Lehrmann from obtaining material that could have helped his defence, any conviction would have been set aside on the ground of a miscarriage of justice, Mr Sofronoff concluded.

In one of many particularly pointed findings, he said he preferred the evidence of TV presenter Lisa Wilkinson and prosecutor Skye Jerome over Mr Drumgold.

“I do not believe any part of Mr Drumgold’s purported recollection unless it is consistent with the recollection of those witnesses,” he said.

Mr Sofronoff said he had considered whether he should invite Mr Drumgold to make a submission as to whether he was a fit and proper person to remain on the roll of barristers and to hold office as the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He said he accepted the submission of Mr Drumgold’s counsel, Mark Tedeschi SC, that it was not within his terms of reference, and that, in any case, “it would not be right for me to do so”.

However, several senior lawyers have told The Australian that if Mr Drumgold was found to have deliberately misled the court to prevent defence lawyers obtaining police documents, he may face an investigation for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The Office of the DPP will now also face a multimillion-dollar claim by Mr Lehrmann on the grounds of malfeasance, following Mr Sofronoff’s findings of gross misconduct by Mr Drumgold.

By contrast, Mr Sofronoff found that police investigators and their immediate superior officers “performed their duties in absolute good faith, with great determination although faced with obstacles, and put together a sound case”. They conducted “a thorough investigation,” Mr Sofronoff found.

Drumgold will be lucky to defending drunk and disorderly cases in East Bullamakanka.

He’s rooted. The oz.

The brutal truth is that the corruption of Russian politics, justice, and her economy have crippled her and she cannot work her way out of it.
Putin cannot solve the corruption because it is the mainstay of his power.
Russia is in dire straits and must collapse if it cannot sort itself out.
This is a pity, because I think Russia would be a great addition to the European polity. I see a point in time when Europe must ally with Russia if only to protect the resources area of the Great Siberian Plateau and the eastern regions from China.

@davidmcc359
Yamasaki might have designed it, but it was Leslie Robertson who engineered the towers and the wee man made a damned good job too, despite the media looking to afford blame other than at the filth who carried this out. The media, in my opinion, hounded the man with carefully crafted interviews, seeking some flaw or issue they could capitalise on. Offering such insightful questions, decades after the towers were built, such as, “Was the towers designed to take the impact of a plane larger than the Boeing 707”, almost suggesting Robertson should’ve imagined the likes of the modern airliners of today as opposed to almost 3 decades earlier. Robertson, in my opinion, engineered these leviathans with extrordinary reslience, given the task laid by Yamasaki, but I feel the man was haunted to his dying day by the false doubts shoved into his head by despicable reporters eager to point the finger, other than at the perpetrators..

There are three levels of sanction available against Dumgold:-
1. Loss of job. Probable, but he won’t be fired. It will be a negotiated redundancy.
2. Loss of career (i.e. bar membership, practicing certificate). Is there an ACT bar? Or is it incorporated into NSW? If ACT he is safe. If NSW, he is probably gone.
3. Criminal charges. Don’t make me laugh.

My July bills were $185 electricity and $347 gas, three adults here.

Electricity is up about $50 a month, since April. Though for a long time it was consistently $80 a month so more than double what it was three years ago.
My gas bill is down about $100 from last year, because I rarely now turn the ducted heating on.

I like your approach but sadly I’m not optimistic about the possibility.

In the novel Dead Souls the author has a passage which points out that Russia has always had an identity problem. It sits between the East and the West but doesn’t belong to either.

It is perhaps more the case that Russia wants either the East or West, preferably both, to be like Russia. I just watched an interview with an Indian bod where he argued that because Russia is now aligning with China India is going to increasingly distance itself from Russia. It has already cancelled some military contracts but that was before Ukraine and had more to do with failures of delivery and promise in those contracts; one example being it pulled out of the SU57 development cycle which probably explains why that has stalled.
Indian bod:

THIS explains why Russia starts insane wars

BTW, I previously forgot to add that contrary to the views of some here there is a winner in this war. NATO. Can off load mostly mothballed or ample supplies of weapons, can obtain valuable intelligence of Russian technology and tactics, and can send a big signal to others contemplating invasion.
