Slightly digressive, but relevant I believe.
Having just read your May ’24 article on Popper in Quadrant, Rafe, I’m reminded of a comment by the former U.S. swimmer Riley Gaines in a YouTube interview recently. She stated something to the effect of there being only two categories of people now (in affluent, First World, Western nations, that is): The Oppressed, and The Oppressors. You are either one or the other, and because we do not wish to be cast aside by our tribe, those who do not fit easily into The Oppressed category, aim for the next-best-thing, being an ‘ally’ of The Oppressed; anything to avoid being labelled an Oppressor. It is these passive supports, the ‘allies’ to whom we need tailor our approach and tactics, not The Oppressed themselves.
