Mrs TE writes We had a lightning visit to Edinburgh to view the Tattoo. We were very lucky with the weather โ it dried up during the day. We also saw some of the Fringe Festival โ at least the buskers along the Royal Mile performing.
Loved the Caledonian band music, and formations. Interestingly there was a huge input by the Americans โ they supplied 25% of the show. Their precision marching and rifle drill team was fantastic and entertaining. Their bandsโ costuming and presentation was flamboyant compared to the Brits.
There was an Indian Arts presentation โ much like a Bollywood singing, music, lighting, dancing, event. No Oz/Pacific involvement. Of course, the Gurkhas were there with their band. And the lone piper high on the castle walls. Finished off with the main parade and some fireworks.
We were particularly happy that the event was attended by Princess Anne, who received a rousing welcome. She just arrived in a car and took her place in the stand. The show is not as militaristic as I remember from seeing it about 35 years ago. Then it was freezing cold and there were military dog performances and breaking down cannons and re-assembling them at speed. This one was a little like the opening of the Olympics โ a general, feel-good singing, music and dancing extravaganza.
Onwards to our house-sitting arrangement โ two elderly Jack Russells, one elderly cat (who doesnโt seem to like humans) and a big tank of fish in Romsey, Hampshire, England. We are staying 7 days and having some down-time/catch-up time (probably the opposite of each other!). I am looking forward to cooking for ourselves and using a washing machine and hanging clothes outside on a line! Little things I know but missed.
From here, we go on a working cruise from Athens around the Mediterranean with a new ship for us, the Celebrity Infinity.
A trireme? That would be super cool.
Ok might be hard to fit in the catering though.
Ok you got me Bruce – please explain!
Haha TE. I’ve just spent the last half hour imagining an awesome tourist excursion in the Greek isles.
First build a galley. For a tourist boat it would work best as a single bank of oars, not a bireme or trireme.
Sell day tickets for a couple hundred Aussie.
On your galley you bring a hundred tourists. The galley has ten oars per side and benches for five. The tourists get to row the galley.
Your base is on Greek port somewhere with a nearby island say 5 km offshore. Bring on the tourists, get them sorted on the rowers’ benches and then row out to the island. You’d need a pier on the island and a powerful runabout to tow the galley into the pier, since a bunch of tourists rowing a galley wouldn’t be able to dock.
Once you’ve reached the islet, you feed the tourists with a fine Greek lunch with all the trimmings and wine. Then afterwards they row the galley back to the home port.
Probably only need six or seven staff, lunch for 100 on the island, and at $200 per head you are grossing $20,000 per day. And the tourists have a great time being Athenian rowers at Salamis!
And when the captain wants to go water skiing?
The tourists row harder…
I don’t see any problems there Bruce. Put myself and Mrs TE down for your second voyage – I’ll let others experience any initial problems.
You said is was a working cruise. Presumably ex Piraeus.
They putting you on the oars? ๐
What a great and varied trip you are both having, TE. Your lecturing skills are certainly paying a dividend on those cruises. I know what you mean about the household stuff – we are always somewhere glad to throw ourselves at a washing machine and dryer and if there is a stove, to get a decent steak onto it. Enjoy and keep the travelogue coming.
Cheers Lizzie. I think in the end though you get sick of living out of your suitcase.
Met an American trucking magnate on holiday in Europe, a few years ago, who said a month away was his limit. After that, he said he was sick of living out of a suitcase, and, going home “You had your own chair, and you knew where the bourbon was kept.”
Bring back Special Branch.
How about the 21 Divvy boys?
They were good value.
TE, your latest holiday is EPIC. How long do you plan to be away?
Back late September. Still have three cruises to go.
Our replacement mattress arrived today. It’s a Sealy Posturepedic with a plush top. Thankfully, it doesn’t present to me each night as Mt. Everest to scale, let alone sliding off that previous disaster wit me sore coccyx. It is, in other words, a normal height for a mattress, although they are getting higher and higher and it is harder to get the height down if you buy a new bed too.
Now I am busy trying to find the ‘two men and a truck’ sort of removalists to take our old bed and mattress to my son’s place in Redfern and then move on to the outer-inner west to his ex-partner’s place, where she is happy to replace her 20 year old mattress with the present of our brand-new disaster. She is tall with long legs and unlike me she will be able to get into it easily.
Get a stepladder Lizzie.

Go fuck yourself you pointless, over indulged, misogynistic, parasitic piece of human waste.
Wifey- “Have you been out chasing foxes with the No Warranty Dog, by any chance?”
Me, guilty- “What makes you say that?”
Wifey- “well, she hasn’t lifted her head from the middle of the kitchen floor, and you’ve bent a hump the brim of your cap for the rifle scope.”
Damn distrusting woman. She watches too many detective shows.

Go fk yourself you over indulged, overrated, misogynist parasite.
Typical MO for you, slander people using a barely disguised epithet.

Only to steal their donuts, but, 132…
Such praise for our own FatFreak. He’ll go to sleep with a smile upon his face. Basking in the glory of knowing absolutely nothing. A fart in the wind has more substance.
I am not hiding who I am behind a pseudonym or a number, Mr 132. I am a rural white man myself. Takes one to know one, but I got educated. Did you?
No shit you’re not hiding when you’re dumb enough to have doxed yourself.
I’ve met Bushie. He is very smart, knows a lot, and is the sort of rural man, built big and capable of doing any physical work, that you would run a mile from, M0nty. He runs his own economic show and has a successful farming business. Unlike you, football fantasy man.

It has a real stalker vibe to it.

Spot of spacechooking, for Cats with an interest in military history – John Pike’s book “Vietnam and the Cold War 1945-1954” would be one of the three best books I have read on that shooting match. There’s plenty of quotations from the officers and soldiers on both sides, and some excellent political and strategic analysis. Interesting reading – check it out.
Thanks, ZK2A, spouse is a Vietnam Vet 66/7, will buy it for him.
Oh, and “Sliante” to all on the Cat.

Say hi to Ms Zulu from me. ๐
TE are you popping in and out of the EU to avoid Schengen woes?
I got grilled in Lyon when I flew in from Malta about when I arrived in Europe.
Had a little panic when I booked Ireland but then found out it wasn’t part of Schengen so won’t affect any travel plans I may have in the new year.
I’d love to stay away longer but family calls me home.
No, never asked about it.
We came to the UK for the Tattoo and then to have some downtime, We’re actually house-sitting, and I am researching for ship talks, and finishing off my next book, which is due on 1 Sep.

Billy Connolly did a damnfine version..
If I hadn’t been born an Australian, the Highlands of Scotland would have served admirably..
Glen Frey did a great live version, too.
Well.
In the biggest fit-up since the Wayne Harmes imbroglio in the 1979 GF, the Pies – reigning premiers, mind you – were robbed once again, this type by the failure to award a 50 metres penalty to one of the Sydney Mancravers who ran about 15m over the mark.
Rightly awarded, that would have been a shot for goal – and the win – from 20 metres out, dead in front, with less than a minute to go.
The match – or, should I say, fit-up – was held in Sydney. I see the dead hand of Karen Webb in this.
Karma for exactly the same thing happening in Collingwoodโs favour against North. Cry more.
Wished the pies won that one would have continued the surprises and possibilities for the season

Not just the 50m that was Sydney umpiring overlooked but what about the girlie umpire decisions on deliberate out of bounds? All against Collingwood.
Pies wouldn’t have made the finals anyway but the AFL made sure of it.
Square waves, I never heard of them. Dot they exist?
Apparently so.
—————-
Square waves are a dangerous maritime phenomenon where waves intertwine, creating a pattern that moves in multiple directions.
This phenomenon poses considerable risks for those who venture out into the water, as strong currents and sudden changes in wave direction make it difficult to stay afloat and increase the risk of drowning. In addition, square waves complicate navigation, making it more difficult to maneuver safely.
This phenomenon not only confuses swimmers but also poses a significant challenge for navigators due to the unpredictability and hazards of the aquatic environment.
Probably not everyone’s cup, but I liked her and some of the songs.
She had a voice that was recognisable by any Australian

Judith Durham – A Tribute (John Cotton):-
This here is a tribute for Judith Durham, the Australian legend
On 5 August 2022, her life’s fine journey sadly came to an end
Beautiful, sublime and perfect are words to describe her voice
She was a wonderful singer, for many our number one choice
Her manner of speech and dress, had so much style and grace
She always had a hairstyle with a fringe and a nice smiling face
Her input to music in Australia made Judith a national treasure
As the lead singer of The Seekers, she gave us lots of pleasure
For many of us, The Seekers were Australia’s most loved band
With Judith doing the vocals, often with a tambourine in hand
Judith was an accomplished pianist, and a song writer as well
In her solo singing career she had many success stories to tell
Songs like Morningtown Ride and Georgy Girl, come to mind
With fond memories of Judith Durham, she was one of a kind
I always liked Judith.
Seemed like a nice girl.
Spooky. I was telling our grand daughter about her last night.
Imagine this happening regularly, the greenies would go apoplectic.
What is even more surprising is that all four survived.
I have re posted them on the new thread.
db is erratic with new OT. sometimes he lets them run up to 2 K posts and then suddenly a new one at less than a thousand.
What’s the thinking behind it all I wonder?
