I received this unsolicated SMS message on Thursday. Apparently it went out to 287,000 ‘Veterans’, everyone on DVA’s books and not limited to those who served there.
It’s a nice touch, I guess, but in my opinion, it addresses the wrong event and is 508 days too late. I didn’t sign up to make or keep Afghanistan free from oppression, but I did dedicate my life to that ends with respect to this country, Australia.
If they genuinely think that the loss of liberties in a faraway country can have such an effect on the entire Veteran community, one that warrants this type of response, what do they think the suspension of even the most basic rights in their own country (for what appears to be an indefinate period) is doing to their psychological state?
Everything most* servicemen thought they were sacrificing for (not just for a tour or two, but their entire military careers), has been decimated in the blink of an eye.
Like everything that comes from Governments in Australia nowadays, a non-solution to the wrong problem, too late.
Soldiers have a collection of acronyms that may be considered appropriate in 2020/21:
WOFTAM: Waste Of Fucking Time And Money
FUBAR: Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition
BOHICA: Bend Over, Here It Comes Again!
* This blog knows of at least one who would be the exception.

There is also a NSW gummint dept. that has forgotten what it is there for .. Housing .. everyday I get texts giving me BAT FLU advice .. there only real function is to collect rents & do repairs NOT implore folk to obey & vaccinate ……..!
The non-vaccine is the single largest debug experiment on the public since windows vista
I’m sad and sorry to see the sinkhole Australia has inexorably been sliding into as a direct result of our pathetically ignorant underperforming political class and the brainless sheep who think they are the absolute bees knees and know what is best for us.
And I’m sorry, Mater, for this insulting nonsense from our hollowed out defence force who are demonstrating daily their lack of true leadership and courage.
Are the UK trying to outdo us?
Thanks as always to Michael Smith.
I could not agree with you more. All that trouble just to end up with the jackboot on our necks. How many suicides don’t the scum sucking politicians care about? Our leaders are an absolute disgrace.
Well said Mater. This is no longer the country or the people that I was once proud to serve. Very disappointing to watch it go.
A question Mater.
And it is not a “locked and loaded” question.
What did you think the desired mission outcome was before your first deployment?
Did you have any hopes for what Afghanistan might become (apart from a neutralised threat)?
Did you views change over time?
Thank you Mater,
DVA sent that text to the 99 year old surviving spouse of a rat of Tobruk.
They try hard with their limited understanding and they can be helpful.
I cannot relate to your reaction as I have not walked in your shoes but the total lack of discrimination shown by the selected audience for this text demonstrates a lack of competence and sensitivity that saddens me.
