Hermann Göring explained how people can be made fearful and to support a war they otherwise would oppose:

“The people don’t want war, but they can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and for exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.”

Change to:

“Most people prefer to live their lives with freedom but they can always be brought to the bidding of their leaders. With covid, it was easy. All we had to do was tell them their lives were under attack and denounce the recalcitrants as anti-vaxxers who are exposing the country to danger. It worked the same way in almost every country”.

If you’ve not seen the movie, it is based on a true story of a young cadet aged thirteen in the Royal Navy College at Osborne. Set before WWI, the cadet, Ronald Winslow, is charged with the crime of steeling a five shilling postal order for which he has been dishonourably discharged.

Said cadet – one George Archer- Shee – was later commissioned into the British Army, and killed at First Ypres, aged 19.

MV = PY breaks down under extreme cases of inflation.

I am deeply suspicious of all the equations of economics. Some of them are disguised definitions and none of the terms are defined properly.

Mind you, I am not happy with F = m.a either. Is it a definition of force as the derivative of momentum, or is there more to it, and if so, what?

Mission impossible: a secret history of the Afghanistan war
By Raymond Bonner
3:00PM September 3, 2021

Watching tragedy unfold in Afghanistan as the United States and, of course, Australia withdrew armed forces, you could be forgiven for asking yourself: how this could have happened?

Didn’t the US and its allies spend more than a trillion dollars there and 20 years to defeat the Taliban and turn Afghanistan into a stable democracy?

Didn’t our leaders tell us repeatedly that we were winning the war, that progress was being made?

The US commenced military operations in Afghanistan three weeks after the horror of 9/11. The objective, the goal was clear: defeat al-Qa’ida. In less than two months, the Pentagon had accomplished that, with punishing air power and commandos on the ground, including Australians.

How then did this morph into the longest war in American history, longer than World War I, World War II and Vietnam combined? The short answer: “mission creep” — from defeating al-Qa’ida, to diminishing the Taliban, to building an Afghan army, to creating a stable, democratic Afghanistan in the image of the US, or Britain, or – yes – Australia.

Contrary to repeated assurances by Western leaders, we were engaged in “nation-building,” and on a “colossal scale,” pouring in even more money than the US had spent on the Marshall Plan to rebuild Western Europe after World War II.

This project failed, because of ‘hubris, incompetence, bureaucratic infighting and haphazard planning,’ at least according to Washington Post reporter and three-time Pulitzer finalist, Craig Whitlock in this new account of the war.

All of his charges are well documented, often in the words of the soldiers and generals, diplomats, spies, aid workers, ambassadors who were there, or in Washington.

The genesis of The Afghanistan Papers is a tip that Whitlock received as an investigative reporter. Buried in the federal bureaucracy was an organisation with the unwieldy name, Office of Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). It had conducted hundreds of interviews with participants in the war. After a three-year legal battle by Post lawyers, SIGAR released some 2000 pages of notes and interviews, with redactions.

The project was called Lessons Learned. It was intended to diagnose policy failures in Afghanistan so that they would not be repeated in the future. We can only hope. For sure, what emerges from The Afghanistan Papers is a reprise of Vietnam as we learned about in The Pentagon Papers.

Just as in Vietnam we were told there was a light at the end of the tunnel, just send more troops and the Vietcong will be defeated, so has it been in Afghanistan.

“We are not winning in Afghanistan,” the American ambassador in Kabul wrote in a classified cable in 2006. That’s not what the Administration said publicly. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, Whitlock writes, “revved up a spin campaign … a new set of talking points … brimming with optimism … a multitude of good news – from the number of women in school, to improved poultry management, to higher speeds on new roads Americans were building.”

In his speech announcing the withdrawal of the American troops, President Joe Biden said one of the most pressing tasks facing the Afghan government was ending the corruption.

But corruption was rife in 2001, and remained so, a bigger threat than al-Qa’ida or the Taliban, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

“I want to be clear. We cannot turn a blind eye to corruption,” President Obama said in 2009.

Successive administrations not only turned a blind eye to it. They contributed to it.

“The gusher of contracts to support US and NATO troops in Afghanistan virtually guaranteed that extortion bribery and kickbacks would take root.” Whitlock observes. “The CIA funnelled cash to warlords, governors, parliamentarians, even religious leaders.

Defining money supply is a perilous task.

Quite so. Wealth is having things you want, money is symbolic of promises. Some folk keep their promises, others are unreliable. Governments tend to the second class. Seigniorage only works properly when governments keep their promises.

The Chook and Beria-zicklian are having a trophy man comp.
Gladys has the silk, Chooky the surgeon.

Why do I think of a pair of aging Georgian era dowagers. Each in a stiff richly brocaded silk dress that squeezes her body into shape like a human sized lump of dough in a mold, her breasts bulging flabbily above the bust line and parted by a fissure rather than cleavage, her skin thickly slathered with an arsenic-based paint which lends it a ghastly cold pallor, and with lips, eyes, cheeks and eyebrows applied in gaudy colours and contrived shapes, a beauty spot the presence of which embarrasses all but her, and a pompadour the size of which seems to mark the passage of years like the lengthening of a mammoth’s tusk.

There she sits coquettish, tittering, intoxicated by the mercenary attentions of studiously love-struck gallants rooted in place by gambling debts.

Silly old fools.

the long history of misogyny

An unpopular term but one that has to be faced in spite of, not because of, its usage by screeching and entitled middle-class women who declare themselves contemporary feminists but who have never experienced any legal or cultural barriers to their freedom of action.

Misogyny requires no special study. History is permeated with the maltreatment of women by men and so is anthropology. It may even be the evolutionary way of things, but it is also something that civilisations can deal with in terms of things we have come to value, such as the rights and freedoms of individuals. That men have also suffered maltreatment as warriors, serfs and canon-fodder is true. Misogyny is simply a sub-category in the maltreatment stakes. It is not a competition. If you want a modern version of misogyny, look no further than Afghanistan today.

Men and women are different in kind and nature in my view, but we are not chattels, nor should we be.
Nor should we be denigrated as unclean because of our reproductive functions, nor lesser in mind and intellect than men (maybe different in aspects), nor the cause of evils in the world via our ‘natures’ as temptresses and witches. These things have happened all too often in the past, and should not be forgotten. Women may be less suited to rule than men; a case can be made there. But the exceptions are many. Overall, the productivity of women in economic life and within the family is now well-established.

I once taught a semester on The History of Witchcraft. Now that is a specific historical study of the most dreadful sorts of misogyny, the suspicion and hatred of women, especially those who spoke out, applied their intelligence, or sought their freedom. They were often scapegoats for wider economic disruptions.

You are missing out on the ‘Everyman’ angle, rosie.

Monoclonal antibodies are horrendously expensive, patented, proprietary drugs. Regardless of whether they work, they are the toys of Big Pharma. And we are all of us, utterly jack of Big Pharma rushing crap products out and frantically making bank through backdoor deals and legal dirtbaggery before the market (and public sentiment) sours into pitchfork-n-blazing-torch territory.

As such, any generic or off-brand material that just might outplay the Big Boys’ fanciest new concoctions at their own alleged game will be celebrated.

We need cures. Ivermectin, doxy, HCQ, triple-therapy, antibodies, antivirals, whatever.

But the general public’s increasing (suppressed) hatred of Coof vaxxxines means that the same companies’ effective medications will be looked down on.

DrBG,

F = MA is shorthand for; it takes a force F to move a mass of M units with an acceleration of A.
What it does not state (in mathematical terms) is that force is equivalent to mass times acceleration. The confusion arises because we can apply mathematical rules to the statement and can say; A = F/M or the acceleration felt A is equivalent to the force F divided by the mass M.
THIS does not mean that acceleration IS Force/Mass. Acceleration is distance over time squared.

A purely mathematical approach to physics can lead to all sorts of nonsense.

Read this:

A Victorian minister has slammed the conduct of Melbourne socialite Nadia Bartel who was filmed snorting a white powder in a video that emerged during the strict lockdown.

The video became public on Friday and showed Ms Bartel, the ex-wife of AFL player Jimmy Bartel, sniffing a substance.

The Instagram star and former WAG publicly apologised for her actions, posting on social media she took “full responsibility” and was committed to “ensure I make better choices in future”.

Who was the Victorian minster with the authority to be telling people what they can snort up their nose.
Oh, it was the relevant minister:

During the daily coronavirus press conference on Saturday, Industry Support Minister Martin Pakula was asked if he was frustrated by “such high-profile people flouting the rules”.

Pakula should be re-titled as the Non Industry support minister.

Rosie, ivermectin was and always has been intended as a suite of drugs for Coof treatment and prophylaxis.

It has been singled out, as was hydroxychloroquine, in isolation.

Neither was ever intended as a sole solution, which is what the Medical Branch of the ‘Cathedral’ has been strawmanning them as (in favour of the vaxxxines) for the last 2 years.

The more each individual component is pilloried, demonised and ‘scienced’ against, the more the public mind is (allegedly) conditioned against it. Just wait until people start getting mocked for wanting to lick zinc anodes or want azithromycin for anything (Remember HCQ + Iver + Zinc supplement + Azithromycin?)…

The problem being, is that the dishonest pseudoscience of the ‘Cathedral’ spills into the agenda-driven pseudosciences of the various ‘wellness’ and ‘anti-vaccination’ movements. And their own ideological static just makes it that much harder.

Nope. Aurizon got the job. And all the headaches that go with trying to crash-gain/relearn all the corporate knowledge of rural WA they (as ARG) threw away with their original treatment of CBH in 2010 (rotting scads of old grain found in hopper-loads of prime APW1, etc.), trying to balance all their other work with probably the most demanding bulk customer you can get and not having enough drivers to meet their new contractual requirements. Even with all the country depots they stand to absorb in the next month.

And all this so CBH wouldn’t have to buy some more wagons and locomotives. Farmer’s co-operatives. Seriously… [Eye-roll emoji]

Sugestion, if an object of known mass suffers a change in its vector velocity, then Newton asserts that this is because a force has been applied to it, and the size and direction of the force is numerically equal to the product of the scalar mass and the velocity change. This is what = means. It does not refer to some metaphysical essence. Neither physics nor mathematics have any use for essences.

rosie,

Two things about that study.

1/ The population studied were people with a chronic inflammatory illness and whether or not they were being treated with HQ were right in the slot to be adversely impacted by Covid no matter what. Which begs the question, has a large scale trial been undertaken of a population more representative of the broader community?

2/ The referenced health care worker trials concluded that HQ did not stop infection. Now I don’t think anyone has seriously suggested it’s use to prevent Covid, only as a symptom mitigation strategy. So bit of a straw man they built there.

I’ve become very cynical of reports down grading use of therapeutics for Covid.

132 yes but still interesting because it was large scale.
There were many other trials.
Cynical yes but there has to a percentage of people in medical research who sincerely care about saving lives with cheaper drugs.

And I’m sure if you look for successful research where that had been achieved in a non covid setting you will find examples.

I guess if you’re looking for something that you can take at home without medical supervision you aren’t going to be satisfied.

Yet it appears in hospital treatments using many other repurposed drugs has improved outcomes for many people.

As for hydroxychloroquine dr zelenko’s original pick, increased cases of heart arrhythmia, 45% increase in deaths, afaik trials discontinued. Why are people still talking about it?

Because if you take it in non lethal doses there are few side effects and there appears to be reduced mortality from Covid if you start early. You think a long established anti-malarial will result in increased mortality without some monkeying going on?

One would hope their voices are heard.

The whole AGW farce works to keep me cynical though.

If a supply chain breakdown gets to 3 weeks, there’ll be rioting, alla same longa last year’s BLM “protests” in the usa.

Once the mob is out of hand & violent, anything could happen, pollie’s heads on sticks, bureaucrats swinging from lamp posts, a change of govt even.

It would be the only thing that would get their attention. At present we are locked away, invisible, inconsequential.

Which means I can’t avoid doing this. It’s a blast.

Blondie, “Rapture” (live) 1999 (HQ) Glastonbury

Amazing lady. Only thing I have against this one is they didn’t get the true beauty of the original guitar solo. (The original is here, which is beyond a blast. I’m sure it’s why Elon wants to go to Mars.)
