Incidentally I suspect that is also because without symptoms you are about guaranteed a negative test anyhow, if how I understand rats tests works is correct.

More to the point, if you have no symptoms, you cannot infect anyone.
At least you can’t if you don’t have a vaccine suppressing your symptoms.

The vaccinated are more likely to be asymptomatic “super-spreaders”, but that spoils the narrative.

What a load of tosh.
‘Asymptomatic super spreaders’
Seems some people just have to have a new anti vaxx narrative to get them through the day.
The point is should be don’t worry about omicron and get on with your life.
The sooner our political covid masters get out of our lives the better too.

Been in and out quite a bit lately*, so have missed most of the live-action leave the country debate. There’s a suggestion that this particular Jenga tower may or may not have been constructed on shifting ground in any event, so that probably didn’t assist anyone.

Briefly, my position would be this:

1. The current situation is better than it was, but is shit. For clarity – it is shit. No question.

2. The list of joints to potentially move to, and where you can do whatever you want under the benevolent hand of small government is microscopic. Until you’ve been to other countries and seen not the perpetual tourist life, but how the people in those countries live – you don’t appreciate that the grass may not be greener over there. Yes I am aware that this is comparative, and also that this is right at this moment.

2a. cohenite posted late last night on the dying thread on Brussels, and Europe more widely. As much as people like bitching about freedoms in this wide brown land, there is very little if any of that link’s nonsense in this country – even in the dark recesses of Preston, Bankstown, Broadmeadows and Liverpool.

3. I dislike the notion of moving to somewhere I perceive as better, whether family/children are involved or not, because everything here is not to my complete satisfaction. Once you’ve made that jump you’ll make it again and again, thus landing in the same ballpark as the country-shoppers so heavily discussed here.

4. If you really, really, really want to find a way to get out of the country you’ll do it. Whether or not you get to bring everything you want with you is debatable.

5. In the unlikely (yet not impossible) event that I do go, I won’t be calling everyone else fuckwits for not doing the same thing I do.

*PHRASING.

Spent the weekend at a famous foodie place in vVictoria with the new man in my life . The degustation cancelled because of Covid issues with staff so booked into bistro under same management . What would Cats think of menu item of Angus sirloin with green manure sauce ? Not kidding Chef would have to be up himself for that . Food was below average and overpriced however apart from that had a wonderful weekend , lovely mountain view from room with lots of birds to watch from window., bush walks and the friendly country people . Town dead with many places closed because of staffing issues.

Elon Musk wanted a law firm representing Tesla to fire an attorney who once worked for the SEC or it would lose the company’s business

Sadly, people who work for the various enforcement agencies are automatically morally suspect, and I am under the impression that the SEC has a history of vexatious practices, overreach, and vendetta.

Musk is probably their number one target at the moment, partly for his wealth but also for his profile and stances against the government and its minions.

Weigh up the low probability of this lawyer’s readiness to involve himself in an SEC adventure against the certainty that the SEC will go after Musk with anything they can, rightly or wrongly, and you can see why he is so fiercely suspicious.

The fact that people have not been able to cross even State borders to attend to some very, very, very important things, would indicate otherwise.

I suppose it’s about the acceptance of consequences, Mater.

The States are different beasts. With the Feds there’s only one set of stupid guidelines. Going from State to State, as countless Australians have found out you deal with at least two levels of self-interested bureaucracy designed to extort cash from the host body (the Feds) as well as to promote themselves as being more restrictive than anyone else because safety.

And that’s with the same Feds over the top.

In my own case – if I had really, really wanted to leave the NT and go to Victoria for my father’s funeral I could have. I wouldn’t have advertised a plan for ramming checkpoints in Kenworths, but I could have done that. It would have cost me financially, in employment terms and potentially my liberty, but I could have done it. Acceptance of consequences.

It’s our governments hanging those consequences over the heads of normal people – the intangible, not-publicly-visible results of not going with the narrative of the day that have forever turned me against our betters.

Mater

He’s a fuckwit. Stop overlooking that and white-knighting him merely because he claims to share some of your views.

I’m not white knighting anyone, and I challenge you to point out where I’ve mentioned his name.

You started out on all those who have stated they might leave, and then focused in on Razey.

You WERE absolutely wrong when you said:

And I reject the proposition that “I could leave if I wanted to, but I can’t”. We established the other day (I forget who posted it) that you can leave Australia unvaxxed as long as you tick the box saying you will be away for three months or longer.
Tick that box and “change your mind” to permanent migration later.

I never said you were wrong about Razey, but he doesn’t represent everyone who have expressed a desire to leave.

A large chunk of your derision throughout the day was based on that incorrect information. It was wrong, and you are starting to sound like Bobnam with your inability to recognise and admit to the mistakes.

P.S. Mater.
I didn’t see anything Rosie posted on the emigration matter, or more correctly I wasn’t relying on it.
I was basing it on John of Mel saying there was a bit of dicking around but eventually declaring that he was going for three months or more got it done.
That was my take and he may clarify that later on.
Also:-
1. closure of state borders last year has little relevance to international borders today.
2. The fact that there are bureacratic hoops to jump through does not support the “we are prisoners” line.
My commentary is directed primarily at Razey, but I do wonder if people who have made similar noises aren’t arriving at KD’s conclusion. That there are complicated personal entanglements this end which make it difficult and the dawning realisation that the grass isn’t greener.
Once you have stridently declared your desire to go, “The gummint won’t let me” is psychologically far more palatable than “It is too hard personally and I’ve changed my mind”.

The Labor Party calls on the spirit of John Curtin,FFS!

Patrick Gorman: How Labor leads war on poverty
Patrick GormanThe West Australian
Mon, 17 January 2022 2:00AM

“Curtin defined Labor by what we were for, not what we were against.”

While ensuring Australia’s survival throughout World War II, Labor prime minister John Curtin never lost sight of the Labor objective of lifting people out of poverty.

It was as important to Curtin as was “winning the peace”. Curtin defined Labor by what we were for, not what we were against. He was for peace, he was for the poor.

Once again in a time of crisis Australia needs a prime minister and a government who are for the poor. Before the pandemic Australia saw the number of people living in poverty increase significantly.

Then the pandemic hit. Reminding Australians that poverty is not simply being low income. Poverty is insecure work. Poverty is being unable to meet your basic housing and health needs.

Just as millions of Australians on the east coast are experiencing with a criminal undersupply of rapid antigen tests.

Here in WA we have avoided the RAT race so far. Yet while we live in the richest State in the Commonwealth, we know that not everyone has shared the tremendous opportunities and privileges our State provides.

Homeless, women in abusive relationships, people with multiple jobs but no job security, Indigenous Australians still experiencing centuries-long discrimination, and increasing number of pensioners, especially single women, living in poverty.

These are the people who should be at the centre of government policy making.

This challenge is even more complex in 2022 when the Federal Government is in more debt than at any time in our history — one trillion dollars of debt, with a projected debt all the way to 2060.

An Albanese Labor government will have to spend every dollar carefully.

Labor knows that lifting Australians out of poverty does not mean reducing enterprise or aspiration.

It simply means expanding opportunity. Our carefully targeted plan will set Australia on a long-term journey to a more prosperous country.

Ensuring those who work hard have secure jobs, secure housing and a secure retirement after a lifetime of work.

WA has seen the Federal Government’s investment in social housing stagnate. Labor will turn this around with a $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund. This will generate a dividend to build new social and affordable housing every year in perpetuity.

For older Australians, Labor will crack down on those who prey on the elderly.

Each year $33 billion is lost by Australians to scams. We will build a National Anti-Scam Centre with the Australian Federal Police to stop pensioners losing their life savings to ever more sophisticated scams.

Working families are also experiencing the pressure of working harder than ever and yet never seeming to get ahead.

Too many parents are avoiding child care because of the costs. Labor will make child care cheaper for 97 per cent of families.

Ensuring vulnerable children have access to child care and that parents aren’t paying more for child care than they are earning at work.

Fear of poverty traps people in abusive relationships. This is compounded when women are worried they might lose their job, too. For decades we have given workers leave when they are sick. Labor will legislate to do the same to help women leave abusive relationships with ten days paid family and domestic violence leave.

A fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work should be available to every Australian.

Gig economy workers should not become a de facto working poor. They deserve clear rights through the Fair Work Commission. Criminalising wage theft will further protect low-income workers.

We can’t become a country that burdens essential workers with unreasonable debts just for trying to improve their skills and employability. This is why Labor will invest in 465,000 free TAFE places.

Finally, Australia can’t move forward on reducing poverty in this country without truth telling about our treatment of Indigenous Australians.

Acting on the Uluru Statement will not only reduce intergenerational poverty, it will enrich our country.

Our promise to First Nations people is they will get a voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution and a Makarrata Commission to examine our history since occupation and supervise a process of agreement-making with Australian governments.

The Prime Minister likes to delegate down, “if you have a go, you get a go” he says.

He leaves people to fight it out on their own.

Whether it’s looking for a rapid antigen test or looking for a secure job.

I disagree. I believe in partnership. A new partnership to lift Australians out of poverty is at the heart of Labor’s fresh policy agenda which we take to the people of Australia this year.

Their ABC explains that capitalism has failed Australia over the past two years.

Economics ripe for a post-pandemic shake up as COVID kills old assumptions

Fresh food shelves have been stripped bare in thousands of stores around the country, rapid antigen tests can’t be found for love nor money and even the ubiquitous painkiller paracetamol is in short supply.

While these supply chain disruptions are temporary, they have exposed a greater truth about some of the key failings of orthodox economics and the policies and practices based on it, as have other events in the pandemic.

The failings:

1) Government debt is irrelevant and doesn’t crowd out the private sector;

2) Returns to labour are inadequate- hence labour shortages;

3) Nobody understands economics.

Strangely, the author doesn’t see this as what happens when governments climb into the cockpit, turn the engines off and start pulling levers and flicking switches.

It’s like these people are terrified every minute of every day. Having a negative test means they might get one more day of sweet life before oblivion.

I read this one earlier, it covers the same strange phenomenon:

The Atlantic’s Nervous Breakdown (16 Jan)

The Atlantic reader who visits the website rather than simply journeying there through social-media links is turned into a doom-scroller, confronted time and again as she journeys down the homepage with headlines like this one: “America Is Running Out of Time.” Note how the title lacks specificity; it doesn’t need specificity, because this is what nearly every article in the Atlantic is about. (A recent feature in the January/February print issue of the magazine was titled, simply, “Are We Doomed?”)

This Eeyore-meets-Nietzsche tone now dominates much of the magazine’s coverage. Alexis Madrigal, the founder of its tracking project, offered a similar example of irrational meltdown in a piece about getting a breakthrough case of COVID at the end of 2021. After attending a wedding, Madrigal was consumed by the idea that he would get sick even though he initially tested negative. He described his response: “I did an intense Peloton workout and it felt fine, though maybe my legs were a little slow. I wasn’t eager to test again; a negative PCR test seemed good enough. But my wife heard me cough—one of only maybe 20 coughs throughout my whole sickness—and said, ‘Couldn’t you take another antigen test?’”

Reader, he got it. Whereupon he became a prisoner of his own irrationality, despite being vaccinated and experiencing only mild illness: “The life disruption—the logistical pain you cause those around you—is now a major part of any bad scenario. As I write this, I’m now 10 days past my first symptoms, but I continue to test positive on antigen tests, and so I have not returned home. I haven’t hugged my kids for 10 days.” (His kids never got sick.)

Confronted by the pandemic, a brittle safetyism-raised group of would-be elites, who marinated in an education system where the will to power was derived from victimhood, would naturally turn a publication into content by and for obsessive hypochondriacs.

Seems pretty apt. Millions of Aussies have turned into Eeyore-meets-Nietzschian obsessive hypochondriacs.

Australian subscribers who click on surveys?
More than a “bit”

Possibly.
Who knows exactly?
But I reckon you’re dreamin’ if you think that a majority of people support Djokovic.

And one more thing about that woman with the fat dog, clearly she is not above coaching her child to behave for the cameras in a way that makes her case more manipulative. Unless of course the kid was a prop inserted for maximum sob factor points.

I hope she’s a welder.
Look, I really don’t give a fuck what they do themselves.
It’s when they start trying to impose this stuff on others.

Now, after previously recording all deaths with covid as deaths from covid, the US Department of Health and Services has told hospitals they will no longer need to report covid deaths at all from 2 February.

How do they hospitals get their federal COVID cases/death money under the CARES Act if they don’t report them?

* Hit 80% (or whatever the original number was) vaccination rate and herd immunity is achieved and we can all go back to normal.

Last benchmark in QLD was when we hit 90% double vaxxed masks can come off indoors.

We’re nearly at 89%.

What are the odds “boosters” will soon come into play?

Who knows how many Ostrayans know who Djokovic is?

Anyone who thinks government can stop you leaving the country is not trying.

Absolutely nobody would stop you hopping on a boat and sailing or motoring to PNG.

You could probably do it on one of the fishing tours out of Cape York.

Not mentioned in the report, bern.

I would imagine the money could still be doled out pro rata based on previous reporting. Once such measures are in place it’s very hard for politicians to reel them in without being accused of “funding cuts”. And with those mid-terms coming up…

Blame the staffie.

Staffies can be blamed for:
•1 Misusing their chewing superpowers;
•2 Farting horribly.

Not much else.

Tasmania hit 90% and then they insisted that mask go on indoors. Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds apparently.

Ha! The idiots will say “We didn’t drift leftwards enough” or “having lost sight of our objective, we re-doubled our efforts”.

Met a gluten intolerant Staffie once, that was a horrible pairing. Think •2 with explosive follow through whenever the beast found something to eat it wasn’t supposed to have access to.

You won’t hear it in the MSM today, but of the 20 deaths <with COVID today in NSW, 14 were vaccinated ie 70%.

Too damn right. I just think of all the herioc (and not so heroic ones) who escaped from Vietnam and China. The guy who had a Chinese Restaurant in Footscray swam across to Hong Kong during the Cultural Revolution or GLF iirc.

A little-known fact is that Novak Djokovich’s expulsion from Australia is effective for three years – which means the world tennis No.1 is effectively banned from competing for the rest of his career.

Well done, Scott Morrison. You’ve officially made Australia’s tennis grand slam second-rate.

Just on this Novax Jockitch issue, everyone has a point to make it seems, so here’s mine.
Many of my fellow countrymen have a characteristic that troubles me greatly.
They don’t mind being tyrannised as long as everyone else is. “If we’re being tyrannised, then so should Novax Jockitch”
It’s a point . I get it.
Here’s another one.
None of us should be tyrannised. We should all be free to come and go.
It’s a real sickness of the mind to accept your own imprisonment by criminals as long as everyone else gets locked up for no reason as well. No tall poppies here please………shouldn’t we as a nation be more concerned with freeing the 26 million of us, getting out from underneath 2 years of State of Emergency madness, and seeking justice, rather than making sure that everyone else becomes the victims of this crime, just like you?
It’s the most warped sense of fairness you can conceive.
Convict status accepted as long as their are no favourites.

Through family and friends this is roughly where I find it. Within that 60% roughly half in the camp of “no one should be exempt” and the other half “eek he could infect people…”
