Inflation is smashing everything except gold. I wonder why.

Because it isn’t. That’s the only response. People no longer buy it as a hedge. In fact it’s not a fucking hedge for anything – neither deflation nor inflation. Buy it for industrial uses or jewellery.

Real estate appears to be a hedge against inflation at the moment as well as stocks that do well in periods of inflation. These are those with pricing power like the global consumer brands.

But surely RE will run out of steam. Interest rates are going up and wages are not keeping up with inflation. Rickw mentioned yesterday that fuel works took a 30% pay cut. Teachers get a 2% pay rise. Not nearly enough.

Taliban elite send daughters overseas for ‘good education’
By Joe Wallen
February 8, 2022 — 8.00am

London: Taliban officials are sending their daughters to school despite keeping classrooms closed to female students.

High-ranking officials are sending their children to overseas state schools and universities while depriving schooling to millions of girls within Afghanistan since they seized power, according to a report by the Afghanistan Analysts Network (AAN).

One member of the Taliban’s negotiating team in Doha said they had started to educate their children in school in Qatar: “Since everybody in the neighbourhood was going to school, our children demanded they go to school too.”

The daughter of one current Taliban minister and former member of the group’s leadership council is currently studying medicine at a Qatari university, according to AAN.

Two members of the Taliban’s Qatar office are said to have left their children in Doha when they returned to Kabul so their education would not be disrupted.

“Taliban members and their families who live here [in Qatar] have strong demands for modern education and no one opposes it for either boys or girls – of any age,” a Taliban official, formerly based in Qatar, told the AAN.

Some officials are opting to send their children to schools which combine “Western” learning with religious teaching, known as the Iqra system, in neighbouring Pakistan where many Taliban leaders spent the last two decades exiled.

Other Taliban officials have enrolled their children in private Pakistani-run schools in Qatar, which follow a Pakistani curriculum but still teach lessons in English.

Afghanistan has been ravaged by poverty since the Taliban completed their seizure of power in August last year. Millions of children suffer malnutrition, according to the World Health Organisation, while the United Nations has warned that 97 per cent of Afghans are set to live below the poverty line.

The Taliban has banned girls in Afghanistan from attending school beyond the age of 12 in more than two-thirds of the country’s 34 provinces.

However, some militants are said to be concerned with the impact of school closures in Afghanistan on their children’s futures.

“The Iqra system is very good for Taliban who are looking to educate their boys and girls,” a Taliban official in Pakistan reportedly told the AAN.

“It’s an Islamic educational system that teaches both modern school subjects and madrassah subjects.

“Most of our friends were looking for this kind of mixed system, and after this system was established in some cities like Karachi and Quetta, they were sending their boys and girls to these schools.”

Other Taliban officials in Afghanistan have clandestinely enrolled their daughters in private schools and universities where they take lessons in subjects considered foreign, including English and computer literacy.

The truth about Adrenochrome
Dot Wordsworth
24 October 2020

QAnon, the conspiracy theorist’s conspiracy theory, teaches that President Donald Trump is in secret warfare with a worldwide network of paedophiles. As an explanatory model it reminds me of the voices that Gilbert Pinfold hears in Evelyn Waugh’s novel bravely describing his own delusions brought on by too much chloral and crème de menthe.

In the QAnon dark world, kidnapped children are, I think, made use of to produce a psychotropic drug and elixir of immortality called adrenochrome. They are no doubt tortured and killed in the process. QAnon did not invent adrenochrome. Aldous Huxley mentions it in The Doors of Perception (1954), which largely explores his experience of mescaline. The book’s title came from William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, in which old Billy says: ‘If the doors of perception were cleansed, every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite.’ Perhaps so, but mashed cactus doesn’t really provide spiritual Windolene. In passing, Huxley wrote: ‘Adrenochrome, which is a product of the decomposition of adrenalin, can produce many of the symptoms observed in mescalin intoxication.’ I don’t think this is true, apart from the bit about the decomposition of adrenalin. Next stop was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1972). In the film (1998) of Hunter S. Thompson’s book, Benicio del Toro, playing Dr Gonzo, says of adrenochrome: ‘There’s only one source for this stuff … the adrenaline glands from a living human body.’ That is certainly not true. My husband explained it to me. You just have to oxidise adrenaline.

The OED’s first citation, from 1909, calls it ‘a sulphur compound of the suprarenal gland which is exploited as an internal remedy for the treatment of skin diseases’.

What surprised me was to find adrenochrome in the Lewis detective dramas in 2007. ‘A hedonistic group that aspired to the principles of Dionysus once killed in an attempt to experience the ultimate drug: Adrenochrome,’ says a plot summary. I suppose all this is fair play. Fiction may rely on a mechanism, like H.G. Wells’s literal Time Machine, disbelief in which is suspended. It’s just a pity that people think their children have been kidnapped and killed for a completely impossible reason.

Sacked CIA chief Allen Dulles ‘hired Oswald to kill Kennedy’

By ALISTAIR DAWBER
THE TIMES

President John F. Kennedy was murdered in a CIA plot, according to a forensic pathologist who has been investigating his death for six decades.

Cyril Wecht, 90, claims in a book that Lee Harvey Oswald was probably working under instruction from Allen Dulles, who was the director of the CIA from 1953 to 1961. Dulles was sacked by Kennedy after overseeing the failed Bay of Pigs invasion that had been designed to oust Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba.

Oswald “had almost certainly been a CIA agent of some kind”, Wecht told the New York Post. His book, The JFK Assassination Dissected, argues that Dulles was angered by his sacking and sought revenge against the president.

Wecht also claims that Dulles was instrumental in what became an official cover-up. The former CIA director was appointed to the Warren Commission, which formally investigated Kennedy’s murder and concluded that Oswald had acted alone. “Kennedy had fired Allen Dulles because he was really pissed off about what the CIA was doing,” Wecht said. “Then who gets appointed to the Warren Commission? Dulles. It stinks to high heaven.”

Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963, aged 46, as he and his wife, Jackie, were being driven in an open-top car. Oswald, a former US marine, was arrested later that day and was shot dead by Jack Ruby, a local businessman, two days later.

Ruby died in prison aged 55 in 1967; Dulles died aged 75 in 1969.

“I don’t intend to live for ever, just for a long time,” Wecht said. “I felt I wanted to lay out all the things I’ve experienced and done and the people I’ve met, and it was time. I’ve been working on the book for six years.”

He is angry that the official version of Kennedy’s murder is accepted as fact. “Young people are still being taught that the 35th president was murdered by a lone gunman,” he said.

The US continues to be enthralled by the murder and Wecht is by no means the only person who has dedicated much of their life to the incident and arrived at conclusions different to those of the commission. The CIA, the mafia, the Russians and Lyndon B. Johnson, Kennedy’s vice-president who was sworn in as president on the flight back to Washington, have each been blamed. Vincent Bugliosi, a former Los Angeles district attorney, estimated that 42 groups and 214 people had been accused of the killing.

The Times

I think Wecht is going to have to do a bit better than produce a possible motive for the assassination. What about some credible evidence?

I had doubts about the possibility of the shots before visiting the site. But going there, and seeing the angles and distances from the Book Depository dispelled them. Any reasonably well-trained rifleman could have made those shots, even with a bolt-action rifle. Oswald had motive, opportunity, and means.

I’m considering that, have been for a long time.

Thing is, as an old chook, I need at least a GP and a chemist nearby because my arthritis painkillers need to be redone every month, at huge and pointless expense. There is no possibility that my arthritis will ever get better, but every month I have to engage with a GP who has to phone to get a number for my next month’s prescription.

It is vaguely reminiscent of the guy on a disability pension because he’d lost a leg, being sent forms to renew Those in Power that his leg hadn’t grown back.

London: Taliban officials are sending their daughters to school despite keeping classrooms closed to female students.

Interesting actually.

It would easy to say there is some kind of double standard at play, but in reality a double standard is just the apparent contradiction of a single unspoken standard – someone who applies different standards to friends and to strangers actually has a standard where friendship is a factor.

I assumed that the Taliban were opposed to girls learning anything outside the home since there was nothing there that was their business. It from that you would assume no girls get schooling.

These lot seem to take a different view where their daughters actually are entitled – probably as a reflection of themselves and their importance.

My question is: How different is the current Taliban leadership compared to the old one. The old ones were just psychopathic misanthropic goat-shaggers. These ones, arising not from barren crags like the grim life-despising mutts who mount their camels when they aren’t riding them but instead arising in answer to the presence of coalition troops and a feeble non-fundamentalist state, might be different.

https://www.cato.org/policy-report/september/october-2017/myth-opioid-prescription-crisis

Basically…if we let doctors prescribe morphine more easily, this probably wouldn’t be a problem.

Heroin is about three times more potent than morphine; and methadone, which we give people on methadone maintenance — we’ll get more into that later — is also two and a half to three times more potent than morphine. Dilaudid, which is legal and which we give to patients for whom morphine is not working, is three to four times more potent than heroin. And fentanyl, also legal, is 50 times more potent than morphine

An overwhelming majority of those deaths, however, are people who used mixtures of drugs. In 2013, New York City found that 94 percent of the people who died from heroin or other opioids had mixed drugs in their system. These were not necessarily chronic pain patients. And also, for the first time, this year more people died from heroin overdoses than from prescription opioid overdoses.

THE TRUE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM
Both the CDC and the Texas A&M College of Pharmacy report that what they are seeing, however, is that as pain patients who are physically dependent and are in pain are gradually cut off pain medicine by their doctors, who are getting pressured to stop prescribing, a lot of them go on to seek pain medicine through the illicit drug market. And of course when they go to the illicit drug market, they often buy counterfeit opioids, and they don’t know what they’re laced with. Oftentimes they’re laced with fentanyl. And many of them are buying heroin, because heroin is, according to the CDC, about one??fifth the price of street obtainable prescription opioids.

Maybe – and this will certainly be in the campaigners political calculus, because the election is shaping up as a close run.

But consider that in 2019 there was a 5.5% informal vote.

With its sample size, the Essential poll should be reflecting that in the ‘Undecided’ column – so there may only be 2.5% of the voteherd earnestly weighing up the competing policies.

Is it possible that the West publicly lost the shooting wars, yet somehow sneakily (or even inadvertently) on the cultural one?

Sounds curiously like what the Marxists did to us in the West in turn. Except theirs was deliberate strategy rather than happy accident…

Presbyterian Ladies’ College allegedly flouts COVID-19 protocols during school ball.
Joe Spagnolo and Charlotte EltonThe West Australian
Mon, 7 February 2022 4:29PM

One of Perth’s most elite private girls’ schools allegedly flouted COVID protocols during its Year 12 ball on Friday – which came amid a spate of outbreaks which had the education sector on edge.

Details of the alleged breach are recorded in a function report for the Presbyterian Ladies College Year 12 Ball, which was held at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday.

The document outlines how a staff member from the school – Western Australia’s most expensive private school – allegedly overruled security as it was requesting proof of vaccination from arriving students.

The same report goes on to claim students ignored multiple requests to wear masks inside the venue.

PLC has insisted that all vaccination requirements were adhered to and that staff reminded students to mask up.

“PLC staff gave constant reminders throughout the night to remain masked up when not eating or drinking,” a spokeswoman from the $30,000-per-year fee school said.

“PLC also employed extra staff who, along with the teachers, patrolled the dance floor to ensure masks remained on.

But the function report – a copy of which was provided to The West – paints a worrying image of the event.

It begins by noting two PCEC staff members had been assigned to request arriving guests provide proof of vaccination.

“1850 – The queues began to grow, and client (PLC) was unhappy with these delays, she advised ‘we didn’t agree to this’ and told students to ignore the staff members and continue to enter the venue,” the document said.

“By 1900 majority of guests were on level 3 entering BR 2 foyer (where the function was held).”

The report said PCEC security, worried about the rule breach – which carries a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $250,000 for a corporate entity – escalated their concerns all the way to the PCEC general manager, Nigel Keen.

Adam Bandt in 2009, “We have come to be suspicious of emergencies: and rightly so, for much of the last three decades, culminating in the Bush/Howard era, we have been told that our situation is so pressing and unusual that certain basic rights have to be suspended.”

Adam Bandt in 2021, “Declaring a climate emergency means recognising that the climate crisis is the fight of our lives, it puts action on climate change at the centre of all government policy and planning decisions and it begins the whole of government and whole of society mobilisation effort required to protect Australia’s people and ecology.”

Bandt epitomises James Delingpole’s description of Greens as “watermelons”; he is a Marxist who has adopted the Greens a vehicle to revolutionise society along Marxist lines.

Here is is explaining his strategy back in 1995 when he was a university student, “Communists can’t fetishise alternative political parties, but should always make some kind of materially based assessment about the effectiveness of any given strategy come election time”. He later completed a PhD, focusing on Marxist theory of law as it relates to the globalisation of the economy.

Yes I agree but she’s also ambitious. However, something has clearly gone awry with Boris Johnson. Once upon a time he was a climate change skeptic…..but now he swallows the green bullshit. Since getting elected back in 2019…in a landslide….he’s clearly gone off the rails. Now whether we can totally blame all of that on Carrie is debatable but given what Cummings and others say, she clearly has some sway over him. And it isn’t “misogynist” to state that.

I wasn’t impressed when Morrison, earlier this year and on the heels of the Brittany Higgins claims, asserted that he’d spoken to “Jenny” about the claims etc. I don’t what to know what Jenny Morrison thinks. “We need to keep up to date with our current guidance around vaccinations and we may be recommending in future months additional vaccines according to that ATAGI advice,” she said.

“Rather than seeing it all as just to get here, it will be a fact we have to continue to recalibrate and adapt to changes in our learning, but the vaccines work. They are so incredibly effective.

Crackers and Fish…the lunch of champions.

The 2019 clip, which was recently posted on YouTube, showed Mr. Adams giving a speech in a small auditorium and saying, “I mean every day in the police department, I kicked those crackers’ ass.”

Eric Adams, a self-proclaimed vegan, confessed under duress Monday evening that he sometimes eats fish, just hours after refusing to reveal his dietary habits at a morning news conference in Brooklyn.

“Let me be clear: Changing to a plant-based diet saved my life, and I aspire to be plant-based 100 percent of the time,” Adams said.

Remember the horse puncher in Mongyang that wasn’t? Much media ensued, including pressers from the brass and various pollies condemning the evil garage Nazi that stooped so low to uppercut Phar Lap.

Except, like Lisa Wilkinson’s entre recent memoir, it didn’t happen like that. And when it got out that it was not as reported, world records were set in identifying squirrels on the other side of the park.

Kopf is ‘head’ in English. ‘Dummkopf’ is a mid insult similar to ‘idiot’. ‘Arschloch’ is so much better – you can probably guess the meaning – golf courses are signposted as 9 or 18 loch.

If you send your kid to an all-girls school, and one of those girls turns bloke, what then?

Single-sex schools may discriminate against trans pupils

Single-sex schools will still be allowed to discriminate against transgender students under the government’s amendment to the Sex Discrimination Act, amid concerns that boys’ and girls’ schools would be ill-equipped to cater to the needs of the opposite sex.

Attorney-General Michaelia Cash has referred the matter, along with exemptions to discriminate against staff, to the Australian Law Reform Commission which is reviewing all religious exemptions in anti-discrimination law.

In a situation where a student transitions while enrolled at a single-sex college, a religious school would need to address issues including uniforms, bathrooms and the wishes of other parents to send their children to a single-sex school.

“If subsection 38(3) of the Sex Discrimination Act were amended to remove the exemption for religious schools to discriminate against a student on the basis of their gender identity, it could have the potential to effectively nullify the intention and ethos of religious single-sex schools,” Senator Cash said.

“Striking the balance between any individuals right to want to change their sexual identity and other parents’ and childrens’ wishes to go to a single sex-sex school must be sensitively managed.

“For example, if a current student transitioned whilst enrolled at a single-sex school, a religious single-sex school would not be adequately equipped to cater to the needs of the opposite sex. Matters such as uniforms, bathrooms, as well as the wishes of other parents to send their children to a single-sex schools would need to be addressed.”

Senator Cash said the ALRC would carefully consider changes to the SDA to “allow for these issues to managed and addressed correctly”.

“This is an important and crucial step that cannot be rushed. Let me be very clear, the government believes that discrimination against students is unacceptable,” she said.

LGBTI groups have raised concerns about whether transgender children would be included in an amendment to the SDA, prohibiting religious schools from discriminating against gay students.

Swimming legend Ian Thorpe, who is in Canberra campaigning against the reform, on Tuesday said transgender children would be further marginalised by the bill.

“This is a group of people that should be protecting,” Mr Thorpe said.

“When it comes to the biggest killer of people that are in their youth, it is suicide. And then, it is exponentially increased if you happen to be gay. And it’s even worse when we look at the statistics of someone who is part of a trans community.

“With this bill, we want to see it disappear. What this is, it becomes state sanctioned discrimination.”

Manager of opposition business Tony Burke on Tuesday said “the Prime Minister said he would end discrimination for all students”.

“He said he would end it for all students, that that’s what he said, full stop, and he should be true to his word,” Mr Burke told the ABC.

The Australian understands Labor’s major issue with the religious discrimination bill, which is separate to the SDA amendment, relates to constitutional issues around the overriding of state and territory laws, which the Victorian Labor government opposes.

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham said the government was not, at this time, removing exemptions in the Sex Discrimination Act allowing educational institutions to discriminate against transgender students because it could undermine their ability to run single sex schools.

He said this was why the government had referred broader changes to the Sex Discrimination Act to the Australian Law Reform Commission.

“I understand the proposal that is put forward is to repeal the exemption as it relates to students who are being exempted from the Sex Discrimination Act on the basis of their sexual orientation,” Mr Birmingham told the ABC.

“Now it doesn’t go further than that. Those other matters, as I understand it, would still be subject to a relatively quick, within 12 month, review by the Australian Law Reform Commission to try to address the best way to be able to enact any other changes without undermining certain issues around same sex schools or other matters that are there.”

University of Notre Dame adjunct associate professor Mark Fowler said the government’s proposal to “remove the ability to expel a gay student would be consistent with what peak bodies have said – no school seeks a right to expel a student because they are gay”.

Mr Fowler said significant “complexity arises when this apparently simple proposition is placed within the framework of the Sex Discrimination Act”.

“This is why the referral to the Australian Law Reform Commission was a reasonable way to address this issue. What if a group of students within a school starts a media campaign requesting that the school discard its traditional view of marriage,” Mr Fowler said.

“Would the school be prevented from refusing that request because its actions were on the basis not only of the students’ actions, but also their orientation? If the proposal does not take account of these issues, the amendment may undermine the ability of religious schools to maintain their distinct ethos.”

Barry, you’ll like the joke “How much do German barbers charge for haircuts?” “2 Euros for each corner.”

I learned the ‘arschloch’ insult when I was visiting my friend who lives near Munich. We were in the car with his parents and passed a farmer on a tractor with whom his mother had gone to school. She did a polite acknowledgment but muttered “arschloch” under her breath. It became a long standing joke between us, where the neighbour was referred to as “Herr Arschloch” as one should be polite and use formal names. Sadly Herr Arschloch passed away a few years ago and now the farm is run by ‘Son of Arschloch’ (or Arschlochsohn in German) who has a tendency to perfume the village with cow poo fertiliser.
