Personally I’m in favour of elections and disclosure. People who use taxpayer resource should be required to disclose what they spend and why. Every time. No “commercial in confidence” should be allowed when public money is used. They should explain in the annual budget how the RESULTS are demonstrably achieved and why the spend was justified. They should also disclose all their financial and related parties.
Personally, I’m fine with the spend as long as they’re happy to prove it was good value. In reality, the waste is far, far worse than we ever hear.

There should be clear goal, and clear pass/fail parameters using fixed calculation methods, so that any- and everyone can “audit” the results of the “program” to check it is doing what it was said to do. There could be best case, worst case and most likely case. If program does worse than claimed worst case, it is defunded – time to rethink and try again.
Because they all put such things in place (policy or program, with or without supporting legislation) and then when it doesn’t do what they said, they claim it is because “it would have worked but got watered down” or some such. So I want estimates of best/worse case of what is actually legislated/funded, and a sunset clause to scrap it if it fails.
And we need fixed calculation of metrics so they don’t do the old “treasury estimate of GDP” and then change how they calculate GDP to make sure the program was a success – it needs to be “treasury estimate of GDP by treasury method circa Feb 2022” or similar.
Then maybe we can actually hone in on what actually works…
