Oh, good. Here’s the Bard’s longest word and it involves today’s cavalcade of crested cronies:

Honorificabilitudinitatibus: (noun) The state of being. able to achieve honors; honorableness.

It’s from Love’s Labours Lost.

Re the CIA, The Devil’s Chessboard by David Talbot, which is focused on Allen Dulles, is worth a look.

Written by a lefty but yes, good read. My take from the book is the CIA has zero scruples while achieving it’s aims and it fears no retribution from USG or anyone else. No surprise then that it can go totally rogue with the likes of Brennan pulling the strings.

We only have 10 days left!

Ahead of ya, Bourne1879.

I have sold most of my stuff and emptied my accounts and use the money to live it up before the end – bathing in a tubs filled with champagne, caviar smoothies, sniffing Parmesan off hookers’ bits (thanks for the ‘pro’-tip, Hunter) and blowing my nose afterward with $100 notes* – everything I can think of.

In 11 days when we all wake up dead I will be wearing a smile.

Watching Antiques Roadshow, and someone brought in an early Victorian bracelet, gold, with 12 gemstones representing Christian saints.

The ‘expert’ described it as a ‘fun’ item. She said it not once, but twice. It is apparently, just ‘fun.’

I’m not a Christian, but this dismissal of the genuine belief and rationale behind this item is not likely to be applied to any Muslim, or even Jewish, artefacts that appear on the show.

But, that’s the BBC for you.

I am supposed to be having lunch with a left leaning mate tomorrow who has escalated his opinions since about the time of Trump versus Hillary. His positions pretty well coincide with the ABC and the Age, but he is unable under pressure to substantiate his point of view and falls back on the leftist cliché’s of but you’re a capitalist, racist, homo phobic, etc when challenged to make me bite. He has pre-empted tomorrow’s discussion by requesting we avoid “touchy subjects”. Do I go and reluctantly contain myself to small talk which I am not good at, or do I prepare for what might be a thundering showdown end to a 40yr friendship? I could cancel out due to a headache but that’s not my way either.

Those gongs have become a ready reckoner on the people you don’t want to have a thing to do with. Especially the ones who use the honorific in correspondence.

What’s worse is when they put it in their Twitter or Instagram handle.

I’d make an exception for most of the OAM recipients, the OAM is given to the genuine community volunteers. My step-grandmother was awarded an OAM for over 35 years of voluntary work in Cooma, she was delivering Meals on Wheels at the age of 75 to people not much older than herself and she was deeply involved in the local community support charity for disabled children and their carers. The ‘higher’ awards are given to people for just doing their jobs whereas the OAM is for the local community volunteers who deserve recognition.

He’s saying that he’s incapable of defending his own beliefs, so better lay off the topic/s. He subconsciously knows these are possibly delusional but are definitely sacrosanct to his view of the World and therefore untouchable.

Considering the strength and significance of your friendship, if this is his only flaw, I’d follow his request.
If he’s generally a sh!ithead anyway, just let him have it, with both barrels, so as to free yourself of his presence, now and forever.

With the right setup, Tucker could earn $100 million a year instead of the $10 million he was making at Fox.

I never watch/listen to any of these “talking heads’ so have no idea why this bloke is, supposedly, more popular than any other but am baffled about all this attention to “earnings” .. my impression is/was he quit/left over something to do with freedom of speech and having your own waffle without owner interference …. So why all this concern over “earnings” ..

JC at 2:54.
Interesting concept, the assumable mortgage.
I am guessing the buyers would have to meet the lender’s loan criteria?
A pretty simple NPV/DCF calc on the face of it, but the obvious variable being what future variable rates might be. Also I don’t think the article says what the transportable mortgage amount is. It looks like the buyers have paid at least $50k overs, which is effectively capitalising the future interest savings.
Another factor would be whether interest payments are tax deductible and, if so, what the marginal tax rates of the buyers are and will be.
Having said all that, I wouldn’t take my DCF calcs much past 5-7 years.
Too much uncertainty.

I have a similar issue. Wifey told me we’re having dinner with old pals later this week in NYC. Apparently, the wife doesn’t associate with Trump supporters and begged me not to start niggling her about it. I’m uncertain if I want to comply because being annoying at times is much more fun. She’s a French blockhead, but likeable. She’s also wifey’s good friend as they go to plays and crap like that together. Wifey refuses to go to plays with me because I always fall asleep, never follow the storyline, and then complain about cramped conditions.

God, I love the US. The last one I went to was last year. In order to get into the theater , we had to go through metal detectors, which had a sign saying, “No Weapons”. How far is that from Oz.

Your friendship appears to be worthless to this person. I have had long standing friendships with people who are diametrically opposed to my politics/beliefs and we are able to talk and then find common ground without battering each other. Respect is key. As is good humour and kindness.

If none of those exist in a relationship, it isn’t friendship. It’s something else altogether.

Interest paid on a mortgage is tax deductible in the US. It used to be up to US 1 million interest paid p.a. Interestingly, it also applied to boats. If you took out a loan for a boat, you could deduct the interest against tax. Also applies to vacation homes.

New text messages expose Katy Gallagher’s involvement in Brittany Higgins saga

Sky News host Sharri Markson has revealed new text messages which suggest Katy Gallagher misled the Senate and had prior knowledge of the Brittany Higgins rape allegations.

The text messages show David Sharaz asking Ms Higgins if she wanted her new phone number passed on to Ms Gallagher, noting there had been “no new conversation”.

Ms Higgins agreed to pass on her new number to Ms Gallagher.

Ms Markson claims the Labor MP not only had prior knowledge of the allegations in the days before Ms Higgins’ Project interview, but read the interview transcript and gave feedback.

An ideal opportunity for Mz Gallagher to get on the front foot and go Markson/Sky for defamation.

Gawd, Hun:

Studio 10 host Narelda Jacobs has accepted a King’s Birthday honour, despite her fierce opposition to the monarchy.

Jacobs made headlines last September when, in the days following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, she called on Britain to apologise for its colonisation of First Nations people.

The news presenter said the British monarchy was a “symbol of colonisation”.

“I know the monarchy is above politics but I think we would have liked there to be just a little bit more (said) over (the Queen’s) 70-year-reign,” Jacobs said on the Studio 10 program on September 12 last year.

“While the world has united in grief over the Queen’s passing, colonised people have also united in their trauma.

“There are human remains that are sitting in British museums even now, and there has been no acknowledgment of that or apology for that.”

In a statement released by her employer Network Ten ahead of the awarding of her King’s Birthday honour on Monday, Jacobs said: “While I’d prefer to receive such an honour from a different head of state, the Commonwealth is the system within which we operate. Before choosing to be named on the King’s Birthday Honour’s list, I considered all the First Nations people who’ve courageously taken up spaces created by the colony.

“I thought about my Dad receiving his MBE from the Queen in 1981, while fighting to have his Noongar Sovereignty recognised, fully aware of the monarch’s role in dispossessing his people.

“I decided to take my lead from those who recognise the importance of stepping into the room in order to change it.”

Jacobs has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (general division) for her services to the media and to the community.

By eliminating the media corporations’ audiences aren’t the advertisers also minimising their own reach and thus effectiveness? When television and print media fold the only avenues for advertising will be the internet. At present the advertisers think that is a better option than the legacy media though they have not yet realised that a lot of the new media are subscription based, directly to the content provider thus sidestepping the advertisers.

I think Elon Musk is mulling something like this happening where Twitter is simply a platform and get a cut of the content providers’ subscription fees and never mind the advertisers.

After 40 years you are obviously both well aware of the others views but, pre-conditioning discussion topics is either a) he is aware he will encounter stiff and well argued rebuttal or b) he actually values the friendship and doesn’t want to ‘poison the well’.

In any case I would go and try to dance around the hard topics. If you are ambushed (when he specifically asked that both of you avoid contentious subjects) then let him have it with both barrels and friendship be damned.

Really funny segment at half-time in the AFL match.
The AFL gossip columnist Tom ‘sausage fingers’ Brown delivers a line and length report on Marlion Picket, a Richmond player facing criminal charges in Perf.
They cut back to the panel (Tim Watson, recently retired player Nathan Jones and Hamish McPolo-Pony).
Watson : “So, what do we think will happen? Will the AFL step in? Will Richmond take action?”
Jones : (Does a passable impression of a deer in the headlights and says nothing).
McPolo-Pony : (Crunches the gearbox and oes a subject change without the clutch) “Well, we have a big third quarter coming up …”
Funny thing is, the AFL have been hot to trot on summary justice, looking to sanction players for anything and everything, and football media have usually been quick to jump on.
The most recent example was Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey last year, who was facing calls to be burnt at the stake for something which wasn’t remotely criminal.
So why the reticence to stick the boots in this time?
Well, De Goey isn’t First Nations.

By eliminating the media corporations’ audiences aren’t the advertisers also minimising their own reach and thus effectiveness?

With the most recent exceptions, US corporations are basically as anodyne as you can get. They just don’t want controversy, and with the latest example of what controversy can do, they will be even more careful where they go. Ultimately, Fox can’t force these firms to advertise, so like any entity in the business of making money, they have to fold. Tucker had to go.

Look, think what you want about big pharma, but would you spend money advertising on a show like Tucker’s when he was lambasting pharma every other day? I know I would stay clear. Incidentally, Big Pharma is huge in advertising over there. You can’t believe the pharmaceutical ads on free-to-air and especially cable. They go on for ages. They present a grey-headed, decent-looking older gal with, say, a brain tumor, walking along the beach with back chatter saying that if you have a massive tumor, you can lead a normal life for a few months if you take this pill. Then, three-quarters of the ad warns you of side effects like massive spasms and mouth frothing, and if you suffer any of those symptoms, like a stroke, tell your doc.

I give you a 2 hour conversation with Dr Shankara Chetty, the Sth African doctor who defied the medical establishment by treating Covid patients with a simple strategy based on his clinical observations. He treated over 4,000 patients and didn’t lose one.

But this interview delivers much more than a description of Dr. Chetty of his clinical experience with Covid. At the conclusion of the discussion he explores his understanding of exactly how this “pandemic” emerged. I have heard a version of this through the Bailiwick blog, but Chetty is, unfortunately, very very convincing.

There are more bad days ahead if he is correct. But I don’t have to tell many of you of that.

I have a similar situation with my oldest brother, whom I love dearly, but who has been staunchly Left since his uni days. We have always agreed to call a halt if any discussion threatens to become too contentious, but we’re not above stirring each other, especially if one side has stuffed up spectacularly.

He calls me his favourite anarchist, I call him my favourite Lefty muppet.

Bottom line: I would be devastated to lose him because of our differences. I know he feels the same and so we’re prepared to tolerate each other’s political peccadillos. Quite something when we are both admittedly passionate hotheads.

I had one personal contact when our VP, who was a gracious, reserved and academic fellow came out to Oz to explore investment opportunities. He was of course a l’ecole administrative graduate as was his wife – classic French 1st eleven.
I was sent out as his bag carrier despite my protests that I had zero knowledge of Oz pollies.
For his Canberra meetings, the Minister’s office attached a staffer to our little team for a couple of days. She was an amply endowed girl with tight tops and very short skirts. The VP was somewhat taken aback, more so that night when he apologised to her for keeping her away from her husband. “I am not married, I only use men for sex”.
Next morning he eased my out of control anxiety by graciously commenting “you are an interesting people, you Australians”.

Shannon Deery on Victoriastan:

Another day, another episode of dodging accountability in Victoria.

Today, more than half of the witnesses scheduled to appear before the parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearing won’t show up.

Fancy hearing from Frankie Carroll, chief executive of the Suburban Rail Loop Authority? Forget it. Rail Projects Victoria chief executive Nicole Stoddart? Nope.

Same goes for the head honchos at Major Road Projects Victoria and the West Gate Tunnel Project.

They’re among more than a dozen senior public servants who seem to have synchronised their absences from hearings set to probe the state’s transport infrastructure agenda, including the $120bn Suburban Rail Loop.

Their apologies were sent to the committee last week, no reason given.

There might, of course, be completely innocent reasons for the late scratchings. But the relaxed attitude to transparency and accountability to which we have become accustomed in this state arouses suspicion.

Every year after the state budget is handed down, the PAEC committee holds public hearings to scrutinise the expenditure and activities of ministerial portfolios.

The roots of the committee predate federation. Ministers and senior departmental officers are expected to appear to answer questions about how our money is being spent.

The Victorian parliament boasts that “the committee has built a proud tradition of active engagement in oversight, producing reports at the forefront of promoting public sector reform and accountability”.

Anyone watching closely could mount an argument against that claim. Quite literally half of the government-stacked committee’s time is wasted listening to ministers read scripted talking points that would make even the most shameless of advertising executives blush.

The Dorothy Dixer may have been banned in Question Time, and replaced with ministerial statements, but it is alive and thriving in PAEC hearings. Much of the rest of the time is spent watching ministers dodge questions and block attempts from lesser-trained public servants to offer fulsome responses.

Increasingly, the committee’s work is being hampered, as has been complained about repeatedly in minority reports over recent years.

You’d hardly expect minority reports written by opposition MPs to be flattering of the government process. But the complaints should not simply be tossed aside.

Take those found in the report into the committee’s inquiry into Victoria’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, on the stacking of government MPs. “(It is) dominated by Labor government members and chaired by a Labor government member, with both a deliberative and a casting vote on all matters, would never deliver the necessary critical examination or accountability necessary in this crisis,” it said.

The report also noted: “Ministers would regularly avoid answering questions; the Labor chair of the committee would go to incredible lengths to interrupt questioning, waste time or even mute non-government members’ microphones on matters that ministers were sensitive about. Legitimate questions were even ruled out of order with no explanation.”

Anyone watching hearings last week would have seen such obfuscation in action. Nationals MP Danny O’Brien, a longtime PAEC member, summed it up well:

“How #paec goes: Me: Minister, what’s the time?

“Minister: Well let me give you some context … time was established around the time of the dinosaurs, which were of course wiped out by the former Coalition government. Clocks were invented … etc.”

He’s not exaggerating. A minority report he co-authored last year raised concerns about the increasing propensity of the Premier and his ministers “to simply deny the facts when presented them as written in the budget papers”.

Warning of the “deliberate obfuscation, stonewalling and lack of transparency by the bureaucracy”, this report also raised the failure of public servants to properly answer questions taken on notice.

It’s one thing to be cute when answering questions, but it’s another altogether to not bother even showing up to answer them. The failure of so many key public officials controlling Victoria’s transport infrastructure agenda is an affront to proper process, and raises questions about the usefulness of PAEC.

Especially when many economists say it is the state’s massive infrastructure agenda holding back our economic recovery. Analysts believe the record spend of the government’s Big Build will keep Victoria’s cash deficit large.

Despite introducing billions of dollars in new taxes in the budget, just $3.7bn is expected to be wiped from projected debt levels, with net debt on track to hit $171bn by 2026-27.

A report by ratings agency Moody’s warned the state’s capacity to deliver on budgeted infrastructure spending was the key factor in its projected debt burden. It also warned of ongoing negative pressure on Victoria’s Australian-low credit rating of AA, with no expectation the debt burden will stabilise before 2028.

You would think this gave PAEC members much to ask about. Of course, not having senior public servants there leaves lead minister Jacinta Allan to answer all questions. And deliver the government’s message in the process.

Now, that’s really doing what matters.

What case to answer?
A circumstantial case based on arriving with a woman who approximately an hour later is found naked on a couch and later complains of being raped. Whether a properly instructed jury would convict or other failures of evidence etc means the case should never be brought are really separate and distinct questions.

The problem with your circumstantial case is that the complainant destroyed all the physical evidence which would have provided the police with a basis to build a stronger case. She fails to visit a doctor or go to the police to obtain DNA evidence which would have established that intercourse had taken place. She also washed the dress which may have well provided useful evidence.

The fact she took action that clearly prejudiced a case of rape being established must surely been important in determining whether a solid case existed.

Marlion Pickett: Richmond AFL star fronts court on string of charges, accused of involvement in $380k theft
The West Australian
Mon, 12 June 2023 9:17AM
Tim Clarke

Richmond redemption story Marlion Pickett is facing allegations he was involved in the theft of more than $380,000 in currency from a string of commercial burglaries around Perth at the start of the year.

The footy star has been granted bail under strict conditions after it emerged he had been arrested on Sunday.

The 31-year-old — who entered AFL folklore in 2019 when he won a premiership with the Tigers on his AFL debut — is facing a series of serious criminal charges dating back to December last year and January this year.

The allegations of burglary, stealing, criminal damage and receiving stolen goods took place over a period of weeks and across several Perth suburbs.

And during his bail hearing on Monday, the gravity of those charges was revealed, as WA Police opposed bail for the former VFL and WAFL star.

It is alleged that Pickett, along with others, was involved in four thefts — including one involving $325,000 taken from a currency exchange in Girrawheen.

Stalin wouldn’t have tolerated this.

Greg Sheridan is on Sky just now and all over the place about American politics. Makes one assertion and then contradicts it in the next sentence. How anyone can take him seriously is beyond me particularly when he says Trump is too despicable to be the president but then says he did good things?

Greg still maintains that he would have preferred Hillary as president even after everything we know about her, the lies, corruption, the use of FBI and CIA against her opponent. For Greg it’s a case of the heart wants what the heart wants.

My brother in law came to stay for the weekend
He is a leftie and we try not to argue
But it is very hard not to
He very provocatively placed a Stan Grant book on the kitchen bench
I responded by turning it over
He spoke about the welcome to country
Which a local elder had explained to him
I remained silent
But this morning he raised The Voice
And it was on….

I went to Col. Berka’s link to a YT clip of Will Franken sending up Saint Greta and directly under the footage is a “Context” explanation supporting Greta and providing the UN’s approved Climate Change narrative.

– was helpless, and sex was the last thing on her mind
– able to walk without staggering, and to take her high heels off without falling over
– was naked. Someone took off the dress
– invited her colleagues for drinks
– was on a Tinder date, and that she was shouting the work group
– had worked in Defence Industry for Ciobo and was familiar with the office
– give evidence that Lehrmann was buying the drinks for her and the group
– could be seen on her phone, and she organised a Bumble date for the evening
– threw up in the former minister’s bathroom
– made her way into a small room near Linda “house sized bottomage” Reynolds’ office
– found a box of Roses chocolates and ate it while crying

Cats – FFS – obsessed, we much? That’s some lowlights from barely a quarter into yesterday’s open thread. Admittedly, a sizeable proportion would be excretions of Eddles.

Rabz, here’s the thing. Regardless of the hideousness of all the cast in this Canberra soap opera, something else happened along the way that makes it comment-worthy.

The interference of politicians in a court case. The complete abandonment of the law’s golden thread – the presumption of innocence until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, by media, by our own PM. And the continuing obfuscation by parliamentarians over events surrounding the sordid liaison.

Forgive us for commenting on same. You may have been partying. Good and I hope you had fun.

Rabz wants us to discourse on more interesting things. Well, to amuse myself today I was looking at some Ricky Gervaise on youtube and a sidebar caught my eye. The French Revolution. When I did 4th and 5th Year history for my Leaving Certificate at tech (5th year was the final year) our history teacher said the exam will be on 5th Year only but assumes you have 4th year in your head; so we did a crash course in what she considered essential: the French Revolution. I’d see her now as somewhat leftish, but she was a brilliant teacher, across a lot of detail. Watch that sidebar vid today put more of a Christian spin on things than she did. I think it would be a great introduction to recommend to grandkids. She was dead right. It’s hard to comprehend the history of the next two centuries, and now into this third, without the lessons and concerns of the French Revolution held to account. The loss of moralities and food failures and economic distress as prime movers led initially by the elites? I give you transgenderism, the new religion of ‘climate change’ and Net Zero as the utopian dream.

My brother is a leftist, hardcore, and a bully. We disagree on everything. A few years ago, when I was last in the UK, we had an almighty argument in front of his children, at the dinner table. Out of no where he went on the attack, accusing me of being far-right, and an Islamophobe. I was scratching my head, wondering where this accusation came from. The argument was dreadful, we started shouting at each other, and I accused him of subjecting me to a Stalinist Moscow type show trial and he was Judge Vyshinsky. Of course, this just angered him even more, anyway, it was terrible and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. You might ask what my crime was which warranted me being summarily interrogated, shouted at, and judged guilty by my brother? Well, that morning, watching UK morning children’s television with my niece, the programme had little Muslim girls on all wearing hijabs and I said to my niece that the girls should not be wearing hijabs, they were too young and I said it was child abuse. So, my niece, being the good progressive daughter of progressive parents, dobbed me in, a la Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany.

I’m getting back at my brother though, my brother’s son, my nephew, has been here travelling without his parents, and he’s been catching up a lot with his far-right aunties and far-right grandmother. We’re schooling him on “far-right”, love Trump and DeSantis, love Farage, love GB News, love Kellie-Jay Keen and so on. Whilst he looks perplexed and bewildered sometimes with his far-right relatives, I do think he’s learning things.
