Senior diplomatic source: IDF will eliminate Hamas’ military capabilities

The invasion was ‘worse than 9/11,’ the senior diplomatic source said/

The IDF will eliminate Hamas’s military capabilities over the course of the ongoing war in a way that will prevent a recurrence of the invasion from Gaza for another 50 years, a senior diplomatic source said Monday.

Yet despite being pressed several times, the source stridently avoided being pinned down about the endgame for the Gaza Strip, including multiple refusals to commit to permanently toppling Hamas as its ruler.

Pressed about declaring that toppling Hamas is the goal in advance of Israel’s presumed counter-invasion, which could set clear expectations and reduce global criticism, the source pushed back, saying global critics will always jump on Israel in the middle of a conflict.

Civilian lives vs. surprise advantage

One major change is that the “roof knocking” tactic (firing a loud but empty missile) the IDF has used to systematically evacuate civilians in Gaza in the past will be used less in this round of fighting since it degrades the advantage of surprise.

It also appeared that the IDF will strike Gaza without holding back too much to avoid hitting Israeli hostages who Hamas took.

In general, the source did not put much emphasis on negotiating for a return of the hostages now, with the clear focus being on prosecuting the war against Hamas.

Furthermore, the source said prior concerns from 2014 about potential losses of hundreds of troops would not hold the IDF back after Hamas’s much more severe crimes against Israel on Saturday.

In confronting the intelligence and operational failures that led to Israel being completely surprised by Hamas on Saturday, the source said the IDF was already studying the issue internally, and at a later date, when war was not imminent, there would be wider reviews of the issue.

The source denied that any warning had been given to Israel by Egypt and generally seemed less concerned about the long-term implications of the issue, framing it as more of a military matter.

A true course correction would require a ruthless purge of academic institutions, the reconstitution of trade schools, a proper industry policy, a massive new surge in automation and robotics, and the willingness to bias trade and immigration toward like minded nations and allies. A total rethink of energy policies with governments prioritising cheap and abundant energy instead of the current ridiculous focus on moving carbon dioxide emissions from our countries to whoever else on the planet offers a captive class of slave labourers. How Hamas Got The Drop On Israel

That’s still true, but on Sunday we got preliminary casualty figures indicating that Israel had at least 600 dead so far, which makes this roughly the equivalent of several 9/11s for the small country.

And unlike 9/11, this catastrophe has reportedly included mass rape.

Visegrád 24
@visegrad24
Survivors of the Hamas attack on the music festival have been interviewed by
@tabletmag

“Women were raped at the area of the rave next to their friends bodies, dead bodies.

“Several of these rape victims appear to have been later executed.”

So Was This All Part Of A Mossad Plan?

That was the argument of a post shared by one of our fellow contributing editors yesterday (“No, the Hamas Invasion Was Not an Israeli ‘Intelligence Failure’”).

Our view is that it was almost certainly a massive military and intelligence failure on the part of Israel, which raises the question we mentioned in the title of this post.

How Did Hamas Get The Drop On Israel?

The thread below gives a cogent explanation of how Hamas managed to launch such a large surprise attack on the Jewish State.

Factor 1: Israel has built a formidable set of fortifications on the border with Gaza.

However, fortifications are useless without people to man them.

A political decision was taken to deploy almost the entire combat force to the West Bank.

In particular…

Factor 2: Of the few remaining soldiers, many had been released home for the holidays, leaving only a skeleton crew defending.

This was made even worse by…

Factor 3: Standard Operation Procedure at Israeli bases called for soldiers to take shelter during rocket attacks.

With the soldiers in bunkers, nobody was manning the perimeter and soldiers were turned into sitting ducks.

Hamas took advantage by…

Factor 4: In advance of the invasion, Hamas fired a massive salvo of rockets as a distraction and suppressing fire.

They used this diversion as cover for…

Factor 5: Hamas blinded Israel in two ways. Large numbers of drones and explosives were used to destroy the extensive array of electronic detection systems that were supposed to offer early warning.

Then they breached the barriers and moved on eight forward bases…

Factor 6: A first and primary target in these forward bases were communications equipment. Destroying these, Hamas took out significant parts of the IDF command and control system, plunging the area into the fog of war.

They sowed further confusion by…

Factor 7: Hamas launched multiple diversion attacks at sea and, using parachute gliders by air. They also attacked and slaughtered civilians further sowing chaos.

Factor 8: It appears that Hamas used civilian protesters as cover to plant explosives by the border fence. These were then used to breach the fence during the assault.
Finally…

Over 100 Bodies Found In Israeli Kibbutz; Biden Confirms 11 Americans Killed & “Likely” More In Captivity

BY TYLER DURDEN

Update(1905ET): The numbers of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas has been revised upward to an estimated 150.

By Monday’s end at least 900 Israelis have been reported killed and nearly 2,400 wounded since the Saturday surprise assault from Gaza. Palestinian emergency sources report 560 dead and over 2,700 wounded in Gaza has heavy Israeli bombardment of the strip has continued.

In one single kibbutz near the border, at least 108 bodies have been discovered amid the ongoing Israeli search, rescue and recovery efforts:

Israeli volunteer rescue organization ZAKA said Monday night that it had discovered more than 100 bodies in Kibbutz Be’eri near the Gaza border.

“Large teams cleared bodies all day from kibbutz Be’eri,” the organization said. “There were weapons everywhere, grenades, and RPGs. We cleared 108 bodies and we are not done yet.”

Heartbreaking story of wheelchair user unable to vote in the referendum

My sister has MS. She also uses an electric wheelchair. As a bonus, she is currently also laid up with a compound leg/ankle fracture courtesy of an MS leg collapse.

She was, though, quite able to go online and get a postal vote, which she duly completed and posted. Oh, and it was a definite NO.

But I guess sliming up some supposed sob story is all that the Yes folk have left. And only the ABC would even be bothered to run with it, of course.

There’s an old adage…”the opera isn’t over until fat lady sings” (I suppose that’s now “fatphobic”) and whilst I won’t completely count all my eggs, I’m thinking and feeling that the Voice is going to go down, down, down.

Well, it would appear the fat lady is gargling salt water and doing her warm-up scales.
Just walking the hounds this morning and thinking how this has turned. Yes has the ALP, Greens, half the Liberals, churches, every major corporate and sporting code on board, but still looks like going down 60:40.
What is interesting is the now muted response from corporates and sporting codes. OK, the corporates donated money early on and sporting codes issued statements supporting the Yessirs, but I haven’t seen the sort of strident and vocal support in Coles, Bunnings, bank branches and at footy finals that Luigi was no doubt expecting. I mean, he timed the vote to pick up on heavy promotion during NRL and AFL finals.
And Colesworth started out playing Voicey messages months ago, but dropped it. Even the push for employees to wear Yes badges and t-shirts ran out of steam.
It’s almost as if the corporates and sports codes have smelt the wind and got a whiff of truncated careers.
The comparison with the Gaystapo in 2017 is stark. I can’t imagine a local Bunnings store manager telling a Head Office HR Karen where to stick her rainbow badges back then without repercussions and re-education.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza was extremely dire before these hostilities,” he said.

And whose responsibility is that?

Before these attacks, Israel, for its part, had significantly increased the number of Gazans (up to 50 000 iirc) who could daily cross into Israel for work purposes, thus supplying Gazan households with much needed income.

Greens Leader Adam Bandt has condemned the “horrific” attack on civilians by Hamas as he called for Israel to end its “occupation” of Palestine.

In a statement on X, Mr Bandt said “the occupation of Palestine must end” in order to achieve lasting peace in the region.

The comments come after the NSW Greens backed Palestinian marchers in Sydney overnight who said they supported “resistance” against Israel despite the deaths and disappearances of those killed and kidnapped by Hamas.

“The Greens condemn the horrific attacks on civilians,” Mr Bandt said.

“We condemn the occupation.

“It’s time for a just and lasting peace.

I think you’ll find they are mostly 2nd generation Australian citizens. Good luck with that.

I’m afraid recent evil events, no matter what the response, are only going to give us more refugees pounding on the door; more surveillance state intrusion on the ordinary citizen; more institutionalised marxism; more emboldened Russian, Chinese and Islamic extremist sponsored encroachments across the globe; and a general acceleration of our overall decline.
We’re well past the point where society learns from its errors and course corrects. It’s more of the same, worserer and harder.

That is the whole point. Why else do you think Russia, China and Iran are arming Hamas and Hezbollah? It’s certainly not because they care for Palestinians.

Sydney’s Palestine Action Group have just put out the following statement:

Despite a very successful and peaceful rally, the media has reported on a tiny fringe (we estimate less than 20 people) of vile antisemitic attendees who showed up to the Opera House for an event unrelated to the demonstration we organised.

I was surprised that the right to protest , as a pillar of Judeo-Christian principles/inheritance, was not raised by anyone.

It’s a political right to peaceful protest, not a religious right, based on the political rights of freedom of speech, association and public assembly.

As a political right it is subject to reasonable limitations, public safety being one (yes, this can be abused by authorities, as we saw in covid).

On the one hand, NSW police appear to have made a determination (based on intelligence?) that the protest was a threat to public safety.

On the other hand, they allowed it to go ahead regardless.

The police are defending this as a pragmatic response, leaving others questioning if the principle of protecting the lawful and policing the unlawful (was a permit issued for the march?) has been sacrificed for the sake of expediency.

As much as this solution is attractive, you need to realise that a large swathe of Gazan’s do not support Hamas.

I would suggest they are given an option to leave as refugees (to some other local Muesli country), then your plan is enacted.

Labor MP’s son at ‘abhorrent’ pro-Palestine Sydney Opera House rally

The son of a NSW MP joined pro-Palestine marchers in Sydney’s CBD last night, including at the steps of the Opera House, where anti-Semitic chanting was heard and the Israeli flag burnt, despite the prime minister urging people not to attend and the premier blasting the “abhorrent” scenes.

Gerard Buttigieg, son of NSW Labor upper house MP Mark Buttigieg, was pictured at the unauthorised Town Hall pro-Palestine march – where proceedings were peaceful and civil – but also chanting at the steps of the Sydney Opera House, in scenes later condemned by Premier Chris Minns.

Mr Buttigieg is the industrial relations, work health and safety, and multiculturalism parliamentary secretary in the Minns government.

The only alternative is a trade union party that no longer represents (or needs) the workers because it’s sustained by the compulsory superannuation gravy train.

Tom the issue is the wording in the legislation about representation “To whom may conveniently belong” this gives the Union movement monopoly power to represent ALL the wukkas as they may conveniently belong to any of the current unions.
This short sentence refuses the wukkas the right to start their own union.
The Liberals have on the occasions they have been in power, refused to remove this sentence, and have thus promoted the union power structure.
Hence ‘Uniparty’.

An excellent letter promulgated in Quadrant.

Below, correspondence Quadrant readers might care to keep in mind when deciding if to patronise Bunnings, Kmart, Target or any other of Wesfarmers’ many brands:

TO: Michael Chaney AO, Chairman Wesfarmers

Dear Mr Chaney,
…I note that the Board authorised a donation of $2 million by Wesfarmers to the “Yes” campaign. I know that it is the directors, not the shareholders, who are responsible for the management of the company. However, this donation was not necessary for the management of the company being, as a matter of fact, outside the purposes for which the directors were put in place to manage the company’s business.

Further, this donation cannot be justified as a charitable donation as the Voice campaign is a political campaign and not a charity. Nothing should prevent you and your fellow directors from advocating a “Yes” vote and making donations towards the campaign as individuals but, in authorising Wesfarmers’ donation, members of the Board were not acting as individuals but were using shareholders’ money, not their own, to support a cause they happen to agree with.

In short, by authorising this donation in support of the Voice, it may be argued that you and your fellow directors breached your fiduciary duties to shareholders and should reimburse the company for the donation made.

In the light of this, I intend to vote against both the re-election of directors and the remuneration report at the upcoming AGM.

Yours faithfully,
Antony Carr

Noel Pearson:

‘No result will signal reconciliation no longer viable.’

NOEL FROM NOOSA – WHERE HAS ALL THE MONEY GONE?

Paul Zanetti

You’d be forgiven if you believed Noel Pearson, one of the leading voice architects and founder of the Cape York Partnership, lives amongst the Cape York community

But you’d be wrong.

Amongst many other of Pearson’s taxpayer funded Cape York entities, the Cape York Partnership is an organisation whose purpose is to promote the economic and social development of Cape York.

The body has been the recipient of around $550 million with very little to show for it.

Veteran Far North MP Warren Entsch recently took a closer look at Pearson, saying he has garnered at least $550m in government funding for his programs with no benefits to the locals.

Speaking in parliament, Mr Entsch said Pearson has never been elected as an Indigenous leader.

“Noel has been on the government’s payroll for decades, advising and influencing Indigenous policy, and I say to government: do we really need the architect of so many policy failures involved in producing another one?

“While he identifies himself as a Cape York Indigenous leader, Noel Pearson has never stood for an election,” Mr Entsch said.

He said Mr Pearson had been “held up as a messiah — like a figurehead for Indigenous Australians”.

“There is no doubt that Noel has significant influence over Indigenous affairs, but I, like many others in Cape York who have seen the reality of his influence, have long been critical of governments and bureaucrats that only care to listen for his voice,” Mr Entsch said.

He said over decades, Mr Pearson had received millions “for his pet projects”.

“Many of these remote communities that Noel has used as policy experiments remain dysfunctional, whether it’s Cape York welfare reform, Cape York Employment, Good to Great Schools or a range of other concessions — the list of Noel’s entities and programs just goes on and on,” Mr Entsch said.

He said Mr Pearson labelled dissenters racist.

“The communities in Cape York who have, effectively, banned Noel — like Mapoon — are doing exceptionally well,” Mr Entsch said.

“Those who’ve let Noel’s influence into their communities remain dysfunctional.”

Warren Entsch says the $550m is what he “struggled to find” and that “there is more” that he is trying to find.

Taxpayer money granted to Pearson’s pet projects are not being accounted for.

Warren Entsch goes on, “The money was invested in Noel’s ideas. But they were also invested in his own companies. Because Noel not only came up with the ideas, he also implemented them.

“You’ve got Cape York Welfare Reform that made sure he had control of the finances on indigenous people and communities that participated in it.

“There’s Cape York Land Council. We’ve got the Cape York Institute. There’s Balkanu which is supposed to be their economic developer.

“I asked this question back when Philip Ruddock was Indigenous Affairs Minister, I asked him to give me one example of a successful transition by an individual or an indigenous company from financial support from Balkanu and I’m still waiting for those numbers to come through.

“You’ve got Cape York Employment. You’ve got Cape York Partnerships. You’ve got Good To Great Schools. You’ve got Cape York Timbers. You’ve got PAMA Futures and so on…all of these are controlled by Pearson’s entities.

“At the end of the day I have to shake my head in disbelief. It’s a disgrace.”

“The locals tell me they haven’t seen Noel Pearson in well over a decade or more except for a recent local photo taken holding the hand of an elderly women for the press.

And last Friday, Sleazy from Grayndler made a pilgrimage to Lakemba mosque to parrot garbage that our indigenous and Islam have a long history, and you know what? That’s backfiring too.

Anthony Albanese rebuked for not condemning anti-Semitism in ‘absolutely appalling’ pro-Palestine Sydney protests

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been grilled after failing to acknowledge the anti-Semitic nature of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Sydney which have left several members of the Jewish community “scared for themselves”.

A pro-Palestine rally outside Sydney’s Opera House on Monday has been widely labelled as a display of anti-Semitism by Australian politicians with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese making no admission about it having prejudicial overtones.

The protest saw Palestinian supporters congregate on the streets of the city in support of the unprecedented attacks launched by militant group Hamas in southern Israel over the weekend.

While it began peacefully it quickly turned wild as the protesters allegedly took to chanting discriminatory slurs like “f**k Israel” and “gas the Jews”, setting off flares and burning Israeli flags.

The demonstrations have raised grave concerns for the safety of the Jewish community across Australia with disturbing incidents already noted within a day of the rally.

Allegra Spender, Independent MP for Wentworth which includes a large Jewish community, spoke of the “appalling” events of the protest and criticised the government for its ineffective handling of the situation.

“I think last night some of those protests were absolutely anti-Semitic, some of the words that came out of that protest were absolutely appalling,” she told Sky News Australia.

“Obviously in this country we have a right to free speech, but I do not support the hate speech, the anti-Semitism that happened last night and the Jewish community should have been able to stand at the foot of the Opera House and look at the colours of the Opera House lit up because so many of them have friends and family in Israel right now who are under attack.

“Now we need to have found a better way to deal with this and I will be raising this with New South Wales Police and reaching out to other ministers in the government to ask why this decision was made.”

Drawing on earlier remarks made by the Prime Minister on Tuesday where he failed to concede the Palestinian protest had exhibited antisemitism, host Laura Jayes said: “He (Mr Albanese) didn’t even seem to be able to admit that they were anti-Semitic… this wasn’t an anti-Israel protest, it was anti-Jewish.”

Ms Spender responded in agreeance and shared how the impacts were already being felt by Jews across Sydney.

Mr Albanese said at a press conference at Port Lincoln he had not seen the Sydney demonstrations and did not specifically comment on them, but said he was “concerned” about increasing hostility towards Jews and other ethnicities broadly across the nation

“There has been a rise in anti-Semitism in recent times, in Australia. I have been shocked by some of it,” he said.

Each Way Albo – Sleezy as They Come

“I’m concerned about the rise in anti-Semitism, I’m concerned as well about Islamophobia which has impacted in this country as well.

‘No application for the protest to go ahead’: Rally in support for Palestinian people went ahead illegally

NSW Police’s response to the pro-Palestinian rally that took place at the Sydney Opera House on Monday night has been slammed with the latest development revealing the protest went ahead illegally.

A new revelation over the pro-Palestinian rally at the Sydney Opera House has heaped more pressure on NSW Police, after the protest reportedly went ahead illegally.

On Monday night up to 1,000 angry protesters marched to the famous landmark in support of Palestine, chanting “f**k Israel” while the Australian Jewish Association reported some chanted “gas the Jews”.

The Opera House was lit up in blue and white – the colours of the Israel flag – to support the nation after Hamas’ attack left more than 900 residents dead.

NSW Police confirmed to Skynews.com.au an application which takes about seven days to be processed, was not lodged in time for the rally to take place.

“I can advise the organisers did not submit a Form 1 within the required time,” a spokesperson said.

Ray Hadley erupted after hearing the same admission from the NSW Police Commissioner’s office.

“Last night’s protest was illegal from start to finish,” he said. “There was no application for the protest to go ahead. Somehow assistant commissioner Tony Cooke has stood before the media, unaware there was no Form 1.”

NSW police minister Yasmin Catley was in frequent contact with Cooke on Sunday and Monday and was kept up to date as events unfolded at the protest, negating the assistant commissioner’s claims he hadn’t spoken to the minister prior to the rally.

She told NSW parliament in question time that while the march was not approved, police were aware it was going to be happening.

“The NSW police force has engaged with community groups as they monitor the situation here and of course overseas. I know that the Jewish community have an excellent relationship with the NSW police and that the police have been in constant contact with the community over the last few days,” Ms Catley said.

She also said police did not condone or facilitate the protest however they were “managing the situation to maximise the safety of all concerned.”

Warren Mundine, one of the main advocates for the No campaign to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament condemned the police for failing to protect the Jewish community.

“I call on the NSW police Minister to resign or be sacked. How the hell can the Minister and the NSW Police not be able to protect Jewish ppl,” he said on social media platform X.

NSW Premier Chris Minns to speak with Attorney General Michael Daley after ‘stay home’ remarks aimed at Jewish community

The NSW Premier has come out against comments from Attorney General Michael Daley which drew a “false equivalence” between the Jewish community and the “abhorrent” actions of pro-Palestine protestors in Sydney on Monday.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said he would speak with Attorney General Michael Daley following his warning for Sydney’s Jewish community to “stay home” in the wake of pro-Palestinian protests.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Minns condemned the “abhorrent” actions of protestors on Monday night, who chanted slurs and reportedly burned an Israeli flag on the steps of the Opera House in Sydney.

“I want to start this media conference by speaking about the protests in Sydney last night,” he said.

“I think that they were abhorrent, I think they were the opposite of what we want in our modern, multicultural community.

“To have some people celebrate atrocious, indiscriminate killing and kidnapping in Israel is appalling.”

However, just hours earlier the NSW Attorney General had struck a markedly different tone while speaking to 2GB radio’s Ben Fordham about Monday’s events.

“I think everybody just needs to calm down and, as you say, do stay at home,” Mr Daley said when asked about statements from NSW Police given to the states Jewish community for their safety.

“This sort of dividing into camps and barracking over what is a horrific situation in the Middle East is just not acceptable.

“What everybody needs to do is show restraint and respect and just calm down.”

His comments caused immediate backlash, especially given the Attorney General had admitted early on in the interview he was “not really across” what had unfolded on the Opera House steps.

Pressed by reporters on Tuesday morning, Mr Minns said he did not “support” Mr Daley’s remarks, criticising the Attorney General for drawing a “false equivalence” between the actions of pro-Palestinian protestors and members of the Jewish community.

“I want to make it clear that I don’t support those comments, I will be speaking to the Attorney General today,” he said.

Look, the Palestinian’s could have achieved peace and prosperity decades ago had they gone down the path of non-violent civil disobedience – a “sit down” protest blocking traffic in many places and waiting patiently and then not resisting being arrested would have seen the world come down on their side, especially given that there would have been at least one place were the Israeli’s turned violent against them.
The sort of obscene violence they have demonstrated sees them on the wrong side for most people, and I am certainly one. This is not the first time they have done this, but it is certainly one of – if not the – worst one yet. Time for the gloves to come off.

People who support Palestine are entitled to that view. I happen to disagree.

However they need to be careful how they express that support. The better way would be to start off by condemning the slaughter of innocent Israeli civilians including women and children and say that is not the way to achieve their aims. Then say support Palestinian people and emphasise the people not Hamas.

Unless of course they really do think like Shiek Dadoun etc.

One thing is apparent and it is there does appear to be plenty of “sovereignty” type Aboriginals who are not fans of Israel. Lydia Thorpe being the most obvious.

Premier Chris Minns has condemned the NSW Greens for supporting and encouraging pro-Palestine demonstrators to attend a rally which ended with about 1,000 angry protesters turning up to the Opera House lighting flares, burning an Israel flag and allegedly shouting racial epithets.

1. The Greens don’t even pretend to be environmentalists.
2. Nothing couched as “alleged” when describing the flares and the burning of a flag, but as soon as the racial epithets are voiced out comes the “allegedly” disclaimer. Really, what is less certain about that observation than the flares and the flag?

‘No application for the protest to go ahead’: Rally in support for Palestinian people went ahead illegally

This is going to be a big test for NSW Premier Chris Minns whose personal popularity exceeds that of his Party. He has already condemned the despicable and illegal rally of the supporters of Hamas at the Opera House. He now needs to support his words with action and have both his Police Minister and Chief of Police offer a grovelling apology to both the Jewish community and the lone protester bearing the flag of Israel who was arrested.

I’m interested in Antarctica — mostly because of the danger it poses to aviation as regulators now allow carriers to like Qantas to fly so far south that jet aircraft can now legally be nearly six hours flying time – on one engine – from the nearest airport.

So I was fascinated by a doco that popped up on Foxtel channel 115 about Ernest Shackleton’s heroic and successful mission a century ago to rescue a group of fellow explorers stranded on Elephant Island in Antarctica.

Fascinating it was – but unfortunately peppered with excruciating self-hatred by modern-day wannabe explorers retracing Shackleton’s steps who are consumed with a frenzy about “climate change” and the comical fiction that an atmospheric trace gas is driving global temperature because of the evil human race’s war on nature.

Shackleton died young in 1922 but he would be saddened that the 21st century admirers of his courage and leadership are quasi-religious zealots who wouldn’t know what empirical science was if it jumped up and bit them.

WSJ – Israel Was Prepared for a Different War

The Israeli military’s focus on intelligence, air power and technology left it vulnerable to a low-tech ground assault

TEL AVIV—Israel spent three years building a 40-mile-long, state-of-the-art, high-tech security barrier along the Gaza Strip, with radar and sensors designed to detect furtive incursions by Palestinians bent on carrying out covert attacks in Israel.

On Saturday, Hamas used bulldozers and other rudimentary means to punch through the 20-foot-high fence and flooded men through the gaps in pickups and on foot, a frontal assault on southern Israel that was the largest breach of the country’s borders since the 1973 Yom Kippur war.

It was a stark illustration of the limits to the Israeli military’s shift in focus to cyber capabilities, intelligence-gathering and advanced weaponry and its concentration on countering terrorist attacks.

The armed forces were caught off guard by a relatively low-tech ground assault.

Now, the Israeli military is preparing for the possibility of a large-scale operation in Gaza, where it will have to rely more heavily on infantry and conventional artillery, areas deprioritized in recent years, and where it could be drawn into street-by-street fighting and urban warfare.

Israel’s military “has been preparing for the wrong war,” said Avi Jager, a researcher at the Israel-based International Institute for Counter-Terrorism.

Recent military attention was directed at the West Bank, where Israel deployed forces to quell a Palestinian militant insurgency. Israeli intelligence warnings of potential war had focused on the north and the threat from Hezbollah, Hamas’s Lebanese ally, military analysts said.

Until Saturday, Israeli officials widely believed a policy of boosting Gaza’s economy meant the leaders of Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the U.S., Europe and Israel, had no interest in launching the kind of cross-border attack it staged.

At the same time, as the weekend’s events showed, Hamas has become more sophisticated.

Saturday’s assault used a combination of missiles, naval vessels, drones and armed fighters who reached as far as the city of Ofakim, more than 20 miles inside Israel.

“Israel has suffered a strategic surprise, despite all its sophisticated high-tech, weaponry, spyware and world-renowned intelligence agency,” said Daniel Levy, a former Israeli peace negotiator with the Palestinians and president of U.S./Middle East Project, which works to resolve the Israel-Palestinian conflict. “Israel cannot keep its people safe anymore—and that will be hard to recover from.”

A spokesperson for the Israeli military said the armed forces are focused on prevailing in the current conflict and that they would talk about the run-up to the Hamas cross-border attack once the fighting is over.

While Israel has long focused on gaining a technological advantage over its enemies—it is widely thought to have first developed nuclear weapons in the 1960s—the military has accelerated a shift toward advanced air, defense and intelligence systems over the past two decades.

For the Israeli army, the 2006 war with Hezbollah, where it fought guerrilla fighters on the rocky hills of southern Lebanon, illustrated the limits of superior bombs and artillery in counterinsurgency battles, similar to the U.S. experience in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Israel’s leadership began to believe the main threats to security were no longer ground invasions like the country saw in previous wars with Arab nations such as Egypt and Jordan—with which it signed peace treaties—but unconventional threats from rockets and insurgent attacks by nonstate groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, according to Jager.

To that end, the military invested in intelligence, cyber and defensive capabilities to deal with the threat from Hezbollah and Hamas and blunt the risks of a growing missile arsenal in Iran. It deployed Iron Dome in 2011, which targets short-range rockets, and invested in developing other systems to tackle longer-range missiles.

As Iran entered the Syrian civil war, Israeli pilots carried out thousands of airstrikes in Syria that disrupted Tehran’s efforts to supply its Hezbollah allies in Lebanon with advanced missiles. The Israeli signals intelligence unit, known as 8200, became one of the military’s biggest and best-known, also helping to drive the country’s economy by seeding computer whiz kids into the technology sector.

Still, in 2014, Hamas surprised the Israeli military by launching attacks on its territory from Gaza via a network of tunnels burrowed under the wall. The two sides fought a 50-day conflict as Israel launched ground operations in Gaza to destroy the tunnels.

In response, the Israeli military again turned to technology. It began working on a system called the “Obstacle” that could help detect tunnels, and later unveiled the border fence system. Israel’s defense minister at the time, Benny Gantz, said the barrier placed an “iron wall” around Gaza, protecting Israelis from Hamas militants, just as the famed antimissile system, Iron Dome, shielded them from rockets.

In 2015, the military began working on a revamp plan that would cut combat troops and reservists, according to Jager, who has published a study on the transformation. The number of noncommissioned officers was cut by 10% to 40,000 and the length of conscripted service for men was shortened by four months to 32 months.

A spokesman for Gantz, who is now a member of Israel’s parliament and the leader of the National Unity party, declined to comment.

“At the end of the day, you have to decide: do you invest in technology or not,” said Yaakov Amidror, who served as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s national security adviser. “Investing in technology means less money for other issues.”

Subsequent heads of the military took up the baton of shifting it to become nimbler and more technologically focused.

“We are talking about a longstanding process where the ground forces of the IDF were weakened,” said Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.

As the Israeli military went higher-tech, Hamas and Hezbollah, which has fought for a decade in the Syrian civil war, began to operate more like conventional military foes, rather than scrappy insurgents. Hamas, in control of the Gaza Strip for more than a decade, built a warren of underground bases as a command-and-control center for a future conflict, and became more accurate in firing rockets on Israel.

Iron Dome once again emerged as a success story in 2021 when it intercepted thousands of projectiles fired at Israel. The Israeli military’s heavy response via airstrikes, knocking out parts of Hamas military infrastructure, left Israeli officials convinced the Islamist group was tired of repeated rounds of violence with Israel.

Complicating the situation ahead of Saturday’s attacks was an upsurge in violence in the West Bank, fanned by Hamas. The Netanyahu government, backed by settler leaders living in the West Bank, had turned their attention toward Palestinian attacks there.

In June, the Israeli military expanded the number of battalions on the ground in the West Bank, which had increased from roughly 13 to 25 over 18 months, according to Israeli media—equivalent to thousands more ground troops.

Israeli commentators blamed the sluggish response to the Hamas attack on the border of Gaza on the fact that so many troops were in the West Bank.

Richard Hecht, an Israeli military spokesman, told reporters that the deployment of forces between Gaza and the West Bank wasn’t connected. “We had also forces deployed near Gaza,” he said.

The surge in West Bank violence now appears to be a calculated move to distract attention from the planning in Gaza, said Mark Dubowitz of Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based think tank.

“It is true that the scenario of a strategic surprise of hitting Israel on its southern border and through the infiltration of over 1,000 Hamas fighters was a lower priority on the IDF’s top planning scenarios,” he said.

Countering the lie that ‘Israelis are Western colonizers’

Across the West, Muslims and their socialist allies claim that Israel is a Western colonizer. That’s a lie. Here’s a very slimmed-down history of the last 4,000 years.

The original indigenous people of the land we now call Israel were the Canaanites. When the Jews migrated to that land roughly 4,000 years ago, tribal warfare ensued, and the Canaanites lost. Since then—for around 4,000 years—the Jews have had a continuous presence in Israel. They are the indigenous people with a claim to the land older than any other living people. In ancient times, they held that land despite wars with and occupations by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks.

Finally, in 70 A.D., the Romans fully conquered Israel, erasing its identity as a nation. To symbolize that conquest, Rome renamed the land Palestine after the Philistines whom the Jews had destroyed in David’s time. In subsequent centuries, Christians, Persians, Umayyad Muslims, Abbasid Muslims and, eventually, Ottoman Muslims invaded the land and ruled as imperialist colonizers. Through it all, Jews continued on the land.

What is more genuinely symbolic of NSW’s reaction was

Kol hakavod to Freya and her father, Mark. I knew Freya had Jewish heritage but didn’t know her father is the same Anglican priest who waved the Israeli flag near Town Hall last night.

Thank you to both.

Umm, Albo, there have have been FIVE attempts at a “Two State” solution since the late 1930’s. Guess who has rejected each one, while continuing to call for the total annihilation of the State of Israel?

Jeez, mate.
That’s a tough one.
Am I allowed a couple of guesses?

JC is unable to control his urge to stoush, to abuse & belittle others in spittle flecked rants. He blames others for starting it.

Well you do 95% of the time and John W Gacy’s twin 100%. However, I’m not abusing anyone. It’s an observable fact , Kez suffers from all those traits with one exception and it’s a question mark on the Triad.

Well, at least we won’t have to worry about the 251s & education when the VOICE fails cos somehow that part of the system is working! …….
Josh Addo Carr being able to read and write speaks volumes for the, in-place, 251 education curriculum ……….

Granted, I don’t watch the TV ‘news’ but the media reports I’ve come across regarding the outrageous brutality inflicted upon Israel seem tepid in tone at the most & some simply express a detached disinterest. I thought my former workplace was deeply stained with an organisational psychopathy, but perhaps the mesozoic* media is also.

Now, getting back to the Islamic issue, His Leadership wants to ban expression and jail those participants.

How many people would those loons have persuaded to their cause yesterday? I’d suggest the opposite was the case. Average Australians, reading and watching the news about the demonic actions against Israelis, would have been repulsed by them. Free speech and free expression are great. In this case, it showed just how repulsive those lunatics are, and they dissuaded people against their cause.

Only pussies are afraid of free expression.

(But I agree with all of your sentiments except for one additional consideration: “Most” Aussies haven’t seen the atrocities and are being fed palestilogical* fallacies.)

Robert Sewell – I just happened to see this a few minutes ago:
Israeli request for breast milk donations.

Ta, Zatara. Appreciated.

However, the article suggests the milk is needed for nursing mothers who have been called up for duty.
I understood nursing mothers are not called up. The fact that they are nursing disqualifies them from duty on religious grounds.
Can someone clarify this?

There’s a similarity in the base animal urges & the denialism.

Very poor taste to use the tragic situation in Israel for childish point scoring, SIP.

A light-hearted look back to what kind of people we call woke:
Sunday I went to the Highland Gathering at Armadale, now a southern suburb of Perth.
There were lots of cool things – pipe bands, little girls doing Hielan’ Dancing, feats of great strength by men in kilts.
16 Battn tent, some dozy young diggers wearing kilts and supervising playtime with F88 and a couple of LMGs.
Weaving and costume making and embroidery and illumination painting from the Book of Kells and all kinds of Viking to modern things; at least six tents of swords, shields, armour, bows, and dressed-up re-enactors; some of them in arenas doing armoured battle (NO RULES!).

And standing mulishly next to one of these tents of bold armoured young men with kilts, swords and targes was a little, fat, grumpy-bum young woman with vaguely blue hair holding a torn piece of carboard box with written on it a life-altering accusation:

LARPWest is sexist and white supremacist!

I smirked.

Well day one for a quick tour of London all done. Today we have a coach trip to Paris.

Given recent events in Israel it seems rather glib to write about it.

My heart goes out Israel as I’ve always been a passionate supporter of that magnificent country. My thoughts are with all the Jewish contributors on this site, particularly the marvellous Cassie.

Interestingly yesterday on our tour we passed Australia House and the tour guide commented on the queues wondering what they were. Had no knowledge of the referendum and said the only local knowledge of Australia at the moment is the cricket and rugby teams at their world cups.

He did comment that he saw the pro-Hamas demo in Sydney and wondered “What the hell is going on in your country”.

My guess is the world is more away of that disgraceful episode than any Voice. Albo and the other black armband Aussies should take not and be ashamed of themselves.

People like Bob Carr, NSW Greens, Lydia etc are not scum they are simply lower than that.

I reckon interest rates will rise at least once before the end of the year.

I did say reading and watching.

Even if they didn’t read about it, the news carried stories about atrocities and even those who didn’t read or watch news, they would have heard about it from others.

Gutfeld is without a doubt the best social commentator going round. His take on The Five about the Hamas atrocity is brilliant. The left’s nomination of victims who are justified in anything they do prevents condemnation of hamas’s attacks; but so to in the West where there is a slow boil with encroachments everywhere in social values such as criminality and destruction of conventions. The impact of those must be borne by the oppressors and like Israel the West will be condemned if it resists. From 11.47:

I expect going fwd Israel will require additional barriers to entry for Hamas. No barrier is impenetrable and eventually the attacker with enough resources will overcome. However If well constructed the barriers slow progress enabling the defender time to respond. This quite often requires two or more different barriers. It also requires space between each barrier. The same technique to get thru the first barrier should be ineffective against the second. Likely IDF will build multiple walls, with generous space in between to enable other devices to slow progress (razor wire, mines, military tech, dragons teeth…).

…and lets not forget the tunnelling. This seems to be a go to for many.

IDF have definitely underestimated their enemy but I expect this will not be repeated.

Wolfman, enjoy your holiday.

London is just as degraded as Sydney, they just have more space to hide it in. Paris ditto.

Please keep us informed of your travels. It brings a touch of sanity and proportion to the ghastliness of world events. Cats at large are always interesting.
