It is not a proud one, but a loud one.

HTVs have some value in a state or federal election, particularly for the Senate/Legislative Councils, where there are many candidates, often from strange parties.

They have no value in a YES/NO referendum.

I agree.
People have been bombarded with this crap for months. Even non-English speakers can spell YES or NO.
Maybe they think the dyslexics demographic might overturn the results..

Throughout my volunteering, the NOers were of the opinion that 99% of voters had already decided.

Sooo.. why even bother setting up a NO presence at the booths? I meekly asks.

Never heard a cogent answer.

In my extremely ball-parky estimation, less than 1-2% of pre-poll voters didn’t have a clue about the issues they were voting on.
They were the ones genuinely asking: “What is this about?”

However, quite a few asked for reasons why they should vote NO.
Maybe, more would have done, had we not given them the “10-reasons to vote NO” cards at the same time as the HTVs, until we ran out of them 2 days ago.

So, we weren’t totally useless out there.

IDF Commandos Rescue 250 Hostages in Harrowing Gun Battle With Hamas

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released dramatic footage showing troops of the Navy’s elite Shayetet 13 commando unit retaking a military post that had been overrun by Hamas gunmen on Saturday.

The IDF says troops killed more than 60 of the terrorists in the Sufa post and arrested another 26 of them. Among them was Muhammad Abu A’ali the Deputy Commander of the Hamas southern Naval Division.

The soldiers also rescued around 250 hostages alive.

Hamas officials say 70 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israeli air strikes on convoys fleeing Gaza City.

If they have, it’s because they didn’t leave when they were told to IMO.

I say so because it isn’t in Israel’s interest to make a mistake like that and I’ve been very impressed with the profession competence of the IDF since Sunday. Not so much Saturday obviously.

Besides, it’s Hamas’ propaganda arm claiming it.

‘If you were me, and you represented a minority who were the original peoples of the land, would you have been satisfied with a Voice to the bloody parliament?’ the campaigner questioned.

Last night I put up a report from the Daily Mail about Noel Pearson’s final argument for Aussies to support the inVoice. This quote is from part of what he said, according to the DM.

What strikes me about it, as well as his earlier quoting of Jesus on the cross, in the same report, is how narcissistic and almost megalomaniacal is his mindset.

So, not only is he comparing himself to Christ, but in denigrating the potential for him, on behalf of “his” people, only to advise and make representations to the parliament, and not the executive, he clearly expresses what this is all about – Noel taking on the role of Lord of all.

But on a happier note. It’s a beautiful day today. I’m going for a swim this morning aaand, later – drum roll, please – it’s SHOW TIME!

The grotesque terror atrocities will burden history forever. If Israel doesn’t annihilate Hamas, it will face repeated atrocities of the type we’ve just witnessed.

Counselling offered to Aussie cricketers if No vote gets up (Oz, 14 Oct, paywalled)

With opinion polls painting a bleak picture for the Yes vote, Aussie cricketers have been told they have access to counselling services should the Indigenous Voice to Parliament get voted down.

Just play cricket. Have they forgotten our first touring side was Aboriginal and were very popular? No one cared what the colour of their skin was.

Cassie of Sydney

Did Hamas ring the Jews of Siderot, the Jews of the kibbutzes, and the Jews on the farms to let them know they planned to glide over, and to bulldoze security fences and so on for a spot of Shabbat morning tea? Did they warn the residents that they’d be there soon and did they advise the residents that should leave? NO, they did not.

Did Hamas give due warning that they were coming to kidnap and rape women, cut their throats, execute children, slash babies throats, stab old men and women, butcher the animals? NO, they did not.

Tis jolly decent of the Israelis to give the Gazans due warnings. Pity it isn’t reciprocated, but you see, therein lies the rub. There is NO blood lust on the Israeli side for “death”, Israel takes no pleasure in killing. However, there is a blood lust on the Gazan Arab side, they get off on dead Jews.

Oh, and here’s some media stupidity. Last night, I caught the end of the vacuous “Erin” programme on Sky. Erin Molan, being the daughter of an ex-army bigwig, fancies herself as an expert. She is no expert, and she should keep her mouth shut. It was a bad mistake, she decided to have on a local Australian apologist for Hamas. She gave a platform to a defender of Jew killers. Erin was completely out of her depth, she did not challenge the defender of Jew killers, it was pretty shocking. Erin’s next guest was an Israeli security expert (who’d watched the exchange) and he politely reprimanded Erin. She realised she’s been out of her depth, but here’s the thing, she should not have had the Jew killer apologist on unless she was going to engage in a more robust debate. It was pretty scandalous. Erin Molan is a vacuous, attention seeking airhead who should stick to giving advice on how to wear inappropriate clothes to funerals, because that is what she’s an expert on.

Sorry, I am in NO mood for niceness.

Israel at war: Ground force raids herald start of Gaza assault

Ground forces launch ‘localised raids’ into Gaza
JACQUELIN MAGNAY

Israeli ground forces have launched “localised raids” into Gaza to cleanse the area of terrorists and weaponry, as well as try and locate the whereabouts of around 150 hostages, the Israel military said on Friday.

Analysts say the limited ground operations carried out on Thursday and Friday are the forerunner to a more comprehensive ground invasion and would have been focused on taking out some of the Hamas rocket launchers and trying to locate some of the people who were kidnapped on Saturday for possible hostage extraction.

“Over the past 24 hours, Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) carried out localised raids inside the territory of the Gaza Strip to complete the effort to cleanse the area of terrorists and weaponry,” IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said late Friday.

He added: “During these operations, there was also an effort to locate missing persons.”

He said residents of Gaza City had begun to move southward after the Israeli military warned they had 24 hours for their safety.

“The population of Gaza City has started moving south significantly in order to defend itself,” he said. However the short deadline attracted international criticism, including from the European Union.

EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell Fontelles, said the deadline was utterly unrealistic and warned of potentially “devastating humanitarian consequences”.

Mr Borrell said: “Certainly Israel has the right to defend itself, but it has to be done in line with international humanitarian law.”

General Sir Richard Barrons, the former commander of Joint Forces Command, told Sky News that the 150 Israeli and international hostages being held inside Gaza would not be a significant impediment to what Israel has planned, unless they were used as human shields.

“In the scale of the situation … they will not get in the way of a large-scale ground assault” he said.

General Barrons said the Israeli strategy may evolve depending on the resistance Hamas poses, or whether the Hamas fighters simply disappear “arguably to come back another day”.

He added Israel could take small surgical steps to limit the damage to Gaza infrastructure, which would take a long time, or to take bigger more destructive steps. “We know the objective, to destroy Hamas, ‘kill them all’ they say.

“They have a basic choice, they could proceed in small limited surgical steps to limit damage to Gaza infrastructure, which would take a long time, or take bigger steps, which would be more destructive.’’

But three Israeli prime ministers have offered a Palestinian state on all of Gaza, almost all of the West Bank, compensating territory from Israel proper and a capital in east Jerusalem. Each time such offers have been met with terrorism. No Palestinian leader could guarantee an end to terrorism and any Palestinian leader who made such a peace would be killed by Hamas-style extremists. Hamas itself has no interest in such an agreement

Their ABC has no hesitation in calling out 50%+ of their fellow Australians as stupid, racist, self-interested monsters:

In the atmosphere of the Voice debate, Australia’s small markers of progress have already been eroded
Laura Tingle

As my colleague, ABC Indigenous Affairs Editor Bridget Brennan, wrote this week: “Indigenous people deserved so much better than the debate we were subjected to this year: the misinformation, death threats, conspiracy theories, the racist nonsense and everything in between. The worst of Australia has been on display.”

And regardless of what the referendum result is, it seems there have been many backward steps: reports of increasing hostility to welcomes to country and acknowledgements of country, as one example.

However, the number of hideous racists actually engaged in being hostile and threatening death appears modest:

Tony Mitchelmore does qualitative polling with his company, Visibility Consulting.

Mitchelmore says the Voice rarely even rates a mention in focus groups and doesn’t even generate much discussion when it is brought up, though occasionally views can get heated. The way he describes sentiment is that people feel “worn out” on the Voice.

And that is without it ever reaching a level of importance or priority to give it “the cost of entry”, as he puts it.

The issue absorbing the focus groups is the cost of living.

When polls were showing support for recognition and the referendum at around 60 per cent, Mitchelmore says, it was support based on sentiment — on the vague idea that, yes, Indigenous people had indeed had a bad time and that there was a significant body of goodwill to the idea of doing something to fix that.

But it has not been possible to capture or crystallise that goodwill into the specific Voice proposal.

“It’s that ‘I want to buy a new car but I am not sure about this one’ phenomenon,” he says.

And confusingly, Tingle notes:

Not all No voters are racist. Not all No voters are angry about the cost of living.

Many have been genuinely concerned about the legal questions raised or about lack of detail.

All up, it’s just possible that Albanese has a hand in the misinformation. Perhaps more do than we racists and Grampians.

Having triggered the Referendum with the promise to ‘implement Uluru in full’, and then telling us he hadn’t read the Uluru Statement in full “why would I?”, Uncle Luigi has spent the campaign obfuscating on details on the grounds that Parliament, controlled by Labor and the Greens, would decide after the fact.

Tingle’s colleague has something right: “The worst of Australia has been on display”. Just not by the Australian citizenry.

The scene at the polling booth here at the Bay…

Sunshine, early morning glinting off the water at the end of the street, the vast jacaranda in its first flush, twenty or so people lined up, laughing and chatting at the decrepit old community building, waiting their turn.

A Tale of Two Campaigns…

Table Yes – a dismountable market day tent, festooned with many…many glossy posters and balloons. New, both tent and chairs. A bright, happy indigenous woman handing out Yes leaflets. Open of face, charming, not pushy. Other Yes volunteers are sitting, waiting to take turns.

Table No – a card table, clearly belonging to the sole volunteer. A thin, elderly, happy gentleman. A few photocopied posters, a handful of information sheets.

Conversation in the queue – Swanson’s hashtag faux pas – Vote Early Vote Often. A lot of laughing and observations that the internet is forever.

No nastiness, no raised voices, only laughter…we are all neighbours here.

Name ticked off – old school, the AEC telephone book. I write NO, into the box, leave.

As I leave, I show Mr. No my pen. He gets the signal and smiles.

Civic duty done. Now we wait. And the sunshine will glint off the waters again tomorrow, and that jacaranda will be even more glorious.

The very worst. Mostly from the side that wants us to give them constitutional power that the rest of us can’t have. They have displayed every single red flag we have been told to look for in choosing a partner – outright abuse, name calling, gaslighting, shaming and guilt tripping. Ignore those warnings and you are in for a life of misery, which if you’re lucky will end in divorce. This power play was to ensure we could never take the divorce option. They have shown us exactly who they are.

No need to tell that to the nice couple handing out No cards at my local primary school this morning. I made a point of thanking her for her volunteering efforts as I left. She told me it had been a dreadful week of abuse including being called racist a dozen times a day.

Better to be called one, I said, than actually be one when you vote yes.

Concerning the support of the Palis’ by Russia. Let me preface this comment with my undying support for Israel. Russia has self-interest in maintaining Tartus, in Syria as a Mediterranean naval base. I support Russia in this as its what I would do too. The US meddling in Syria when the Russians were assisting in the destruction of ISIS. The US and EU making agreements with Russia over no eastward expansion of NATO when they admitted they had no intention of keeping. The support of the Ukes by israel. I’m not surprised Russia went this way. I think israel made a mistake supporting Ukraine. There is a quote somewhere that I’ve been unable to find along the lines of “if you think you know whats happening in the Middle East you don’t understand the problem “. I don’t know how you deal with Muzzies when they believe telling lies (taqiyya) is ok when dealing with non muzzies. As far as I know I’ve only personally known four muzzies. I want to know if/how you can sync steam locos as well

A guess.

It would have to be done by human input. The lead loco in a tandem runs the show, the second is there to apply more energy as needed.

On a steam loco, the control dwell from throttle to wheel power will be significant and very variable, depending on a bunch of mechanical factors that dictate the flow and performance of steam. So absent some sort of highly sophisticated numeric control system, you’ll be relying on an experienced driver listening to signals from the lead loco calling on the power and feeling what his own engine is doing (for examples: evaluating his boiler, listening to changes in vibration and sounds, sensing wheel slip) as he supplies it.

But I could be providing misinformation.

Vikki Campion:

Hell is a home without water.

In small drought towns, it’s often the teachers who see children in dirtier and dirtier clothes who take action first.

On top of everything they do daily, they wash and hang tiny uniforms to dry on lines where paintings should be pegged

Mothers with drought babies count rungs on the tank. When there’s no drop from the tap, there’s no way to bathe them or wash their clothes, sterilise bottles or dummies.

When the closest public tap is in a town a marathon away, fresh water is gold.

So it is peculiar that sponsored Facebook ads from the Uluru Statement from the Heart identified 500 communities without water, and instead of buying fresh water and tanks, the Yes corporate camp gave millions of donation dollars to billionaire Tesla-driving US tech lords — and still couldn’t move a vote.

It cost $1000 for the Uluru Statement from the Heart page to sponsor this post for a few days: “If you’re not First Nations, the Voice is unlikely to impact your day-to-day. But it will impact the 500 First Nations communities without safe drinking water.”

If the Uluru Statement from the Heart campaign knows 500 communities are without water, why don’t they ask Wesfarmers for tanks? Shareholders would be much happier funding actual water infrastructure than enriching PR shills.

Instead, Wesfarmers CEO Michael Chaney, whose company Bunnings sells cheap water tanks and could donate them to households in these 500 communities, gave $2m to Yes23, who fed it down the overstuffed gullet of Silicon Valley.

The betrayal to Indigenous people will not be that the Yes vote loses but that the funds raised to help communities out of poverty were foolishly fribbled away on videos created by global ad agencies based in New York and pumped into feeds on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Google Ads, based in California.

That the grand beneficiaries of the Voice referendum have been to those a universe away from trying to feed or clean a child without water.

The equivalent of a single donation from NAB ($1.5m), Westpac ($1.75m), Commbank ($2m) or ANZ (about $2m) has been funnelled into Google — with Yes23 squandering around $1.8m just on Google advertising, spending $114,000 on their ads on Tuesday this week.

In the final days in the lead-up to the vote, interim data shows at least $1m worth of advertising on Facebook, including from unions, Labor members of parliament and other Yes support camps.

They wasted thousands on ads calling on some good old-fashioned keyboard activism by “adding a Yes frame to your profile picture”.

Another ad, variations of which cost donors at least $125,000 to push out for a week, says: “For 250 years, we haven’t listened to the people that have been here for 65,000.”

This rubbish invalidates every Indigenous democratically elected local government councillor, every elected Indigenous member and senator, every elder who has been working to close the gap for the past 18 years.

And where significant inroads have been made in improving school attendance, year 12 graduation, tertiary qualifications, school nutrition and life expectancy.

For all Prime Minister Anthony Albanese liked to wax on about transparency before the election, we will not know who and how much was donated to this ad spree until next Easter, when the publication date for the Transparency Register is set for April 1, 2024.

Will the big end of town still be as passionate come Easter Monday? Will the millions of dollars that slid so easily from corporate Australia, for airbrushing and special lighting go to the problems they finally recognised — many of which were not an issue of race but of poverty, an affliction that doesn’t count in colour?

Between advertising and the referendum itself, nearly half a billion dollars has been spent – enough to build a number of smaller dams, or more than 200,000 water tanks to hold 22,500 litres each.

Not only would that fix the water problem in remote communities but it would also significantly boost Australian manufacturers, who make the tanks right in regional NSW and who employ Indigenous people.

Unlike the banks.

According to the Census, the Indigenous proportion of the workforce in NSW financial and insurance services industry is less than 1 per cent, compared to the state average of about 2.5 per cent across all industries.

After their champion score of virtue payments was revealed this week to be of the tune of about $7m — in addition to lending staff to the campaign and hosting Yes advertising on their websites — will the big four consider giving Indigenous people jobs, or keep the branches open where they live in regional communities now?

If they genuinely believe their own hype, they have shown they have acknowledged the issue and have the cash to fix it.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen told parliament last sitting: “More than 90 per cent of Indigenous Australians who live in remote Australia suffer energy disconnections at some point in the year.

“Well over two-thirds suffer those disconnections more than 10 times a year.”

Does the Energy Minister seriously need another layer of bureaucracy to tell him what to do here?

This campaign shows what moves votes is not money and advertising but experience.

If those communities don’t get fresh water and storage infrastructure, what shallow shills the big end of town has become.

Now just heard a reporterette on tv saying that Albo has a speech at the ready regardless of which way the vote goes. About ‘unifying the nation’. After himself dividing the nation. He’s a cretin’s cretin.

Via the Courier Mail comes this nugget. Tis not gold however:

UN URGES AUSSIES TO VOTE YES

United Nations human rights chiefs have launched a last-ditch bid to convince Australians to support the Voice and deliver “justice for historical wrongs”.

In a statement released this week, José Francisco Calí Tzay, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Surya Deva – the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the right to development – said Australians could help their government “fulfil its human rights obligations” by supporting the Voice and allowing Indigenous Australians “to participate in decision-making that affects them”.

“It will strengthen the participation of Australia’s First Peoples in decision-making related to their political, economic, social and cultural development,” they said.

“First Peoples experience higher rates of disease and lower life expectancy than non-Indigenous peoples due to lack of access to health services, adequate housing and nutritious food.”

Firstborn had a pissweak referendum “debate” in her Economics class- the teacher has previously “guided” the kids through Socialism and Green Accelerationism.
Things were unruly, teacher asked kids which way their parent s were voting, evryone talking at once, another boy piped up and referred to me as an “antivaxxer”.
Poor kid, she’s tough enough to be unbowed and good enough to forgive, but she’s been handed the black spot a bit.
F#ck the Trots, the Marxists, the Green Revolutionists, the Public Servant bien pensant class. This referendum has been a reminder how pervasive, dishonest, and constant their Gramscian March against our culture is. I will not be backwards in firmly re-enforcing what this win means.

Can other Cats confirm its laptop not the phone book when voting ?

Definitely book this morning. I can understand the use of electronic devices for early voting in limited locations but the cost of rolling it out for polling day would be horrendous and then all the software updates required by the time you drag them out for the next poll, if the still work and if they haven’t walked in the meantime.

I can understand the pragmatism behind pencils and paper check-offs. Two questions:

Do the printed books exclude the names of those who voted early?

Why can’t we have an ID check or purple thumbs to give confidence in the integrity?

The boss of the Australian Energy Market Operator, Daniel Westerman, earlier urged project developers to call on all available federal and state government subsidy schemes to make projects viable and get them into construction so that replacement generation is available before ageing coal plants close. The rate of the renewables build-out needs to be much higher for Australia to reach its 82 per cent renewables target for 2030, analysts say.

This garbage is so absurd it’s almost beyond belief. We are governed by cretins living in a make believe world.

If the Uluru Statement from the Heart campaign knows 500 communities are without water, why don’t they ask Wesfarmers for tanks? Shareholders would be much happier funding actual water infrastructure than enriching PR shills.

Because it’s not about the 500 communities communities without water, it’s about the rich nabobs and their PR shills. They want to make a difference.

The difference in wind yield between NSW and Victoria this year amounts to 4%. They are building inter-connectors and spending tens of billions for that trifling amount?
They’re not of course, the inter-connectors allow the corporates building renewables the ability to participate in the National Electricity Market (NEM) coincidentally operated by AEMO who are in charge of the whole ruinable planning.
You’d think someone in the media might get a whiff of Denmark.

When two [steam locomotives] are in tandem, how do they match speed and or power?

Or just go full power, both of them?

The engineer in the second loco has to have a feel for any slack in the front coupler and adjusts his speed accordingly. The lead loco controls the brakes for the train.

Verif9cationwould reduce the opportunities for fraud. Of course that cannot be accepted. Therefore, no ID check, no purple thumbs.

So Tingle wrote:

Not all No voters are racist.

This is only an insight if it flies in the face of accepted knowledge.

From what I have seen the Yessers uniformly write off No voters as racists.

No voters seem to view Yessers as being perhaps soft in the head or too soft of heart. Also people with a blind trust in progressive ideas, as gullible people, as people who crave the warm fuzzy feeling of ‘doing’ virtue (and voting No is to not doing something, make no change, and therefore no warm-fuzzy), and also people who habitually get their news and views from progressive sources unaware of other perspectives – and only hear about how nasty and racist No voters are.

No voters seem to be aware that it is a smaller group behind the Yes campaign who are pushing it for personal or ideological gain which they dare not enunciate, hence the dishonesty in the Yes campaign – and isn’t it typical of liars that they sometimes tell inconsistent lies?

Found a brochure in the Dandenong Market carpark this morning. Communist Party of Australia says YES to The Voice. That should be enough to convince everyone to vote ‘no’.

What are the People’s Revolutionary Guards gonna do when the Blak Defence Force gains air dominance and control of the sea lanes, ports, roads, bridges and rail?

You’re only a good revolutionary for as long as you keep up the zeal with a majority of your comrades on the Soviet.

God forbid if Professor Pascoe Ph D unleashes the power of Blak atomic weapons…

Cats who are prepared to put on hazmat suit, rubber gloves and respirator will have noticed that the Greens have been strangely quiet on the Voice throughout the campaign. And what little support they have given has been minimalist and contradictory.

Partly because they are split between activist factions. But mainly because they intend to manoeuvre Team Albanese into the legislative Treaty, Self Determination, Reparations corner (for example, see the Makarrata inclusion, negotiated as a condition of Greens support for the referendum).

The Greens have no electoral fear of abusing the Australian voteherd as stupid racists, it’s an article of faith.

So, post what is shaping as a substantive No vote, expect the Greens to ‘reach across the aisle’ to offer support to Labor in Parliament to legislate all these good Uluru things – on the basis that the citizens have been led into wrongthink and error by Team Dutton.

A wedge to shake Leftist Labor voters into the Green camp, a bandage to harmonise BlakGreens and the Maoist Green Left – and (worse) political positioning as a Party of Government.

Hopefully Team Luigi, or Team Tits, or whoever has a cunning strategy to resist. Because just now, Australia really doesn’t need ascendant Green Nazis.
