‘It’s a Shakedown’.

You really do have to admire Labor’s capacity for conspiracy. If only a small portion of that effort went into good government.

The Daily Sceptic has the story of an Australian farmer in Victoria who has gone off-grid to try to be as self sufficient as he can, not out of ideology, but for pragmatic reasons.

His experience is basically why we have chosen, so far, not to install a battery & go completely off grid. At present we have a 10kw solar system in a paddock adjacent to the house. We are still connected to the grid, and sell any power excess to our needs.

However, we still suffer blackouts eg when local lines are being worked on the provider cuts off our power. If we are at the farm, we can activate the petrol generator. All good. But if we are in Sydney, we may lose power to activate the bore pump which sends reticulated water to all our cattle troughs. We have also had problems when our bore pump motor failed to respond to the renewed power.

We are concerned about the viability of the setup, especially since the recent installation of a “smart” meter at the solar grid has produced some very strange bills (even given the rise in prices) always favouring the provider.

I would like to go completely off grid, in spite of the payments we get for power sold back, but the battery cost and reliability are still not up to par.

Every single drop of Gazan blood spilled is ‘on Hamas’ hands’: Liz Storer

Sky News host Liz Storer says every single drop of Gazan blood that has been spilled is “on Hamas’ hands”.

Ms Storer took aim at people blaming the Israeli government for Palestinian lives being lost in the conflict between Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“Every single drop of Gazan blood spilled is on Hamas’ hands, not on Israel; what did they genuinely think – that Hamas was just going to do this and Israel was going to be all like ‘oh okay then’, not,” she told Sky News host James Macpherson.

“Every single drop spilled on that side of the border is on the hands of Hamas.

“Therefore flying the Palestinian flag and saying ‘we stand with Palestine’, then go after Hamas because they are the murderers of their own people for crying out loud.”

Those GDP numbers in the US smell fishy. Does the US economy appear to anyone like it has grown by that much? How to explain the near 10% decline in tax receipts in a booming economy? The changes to CGT? Sure. Sure.

Short answer Dover is yes, it is quite possible.
The issue is who is benefiting & who is not.
Different parts of the US economy are booming & seeing strong wage growth.
Others parts are struggling.

‘Crazy’: Scotland leader wants nation to welcome Gaza refugees

Sky News host James Macpherson has discussed the Scottish First Minister’s “crazy” call for Gaza refugees to be welcomed into the country.

“Scotland is ready to play her part,” Humza Yousaf said in a tweet.

“To be the first country in the UK to offer safety and sanctuary to the people of Gaza. To treat the injured men, women and children, where we can.”

The First Minister repeated the sentiment in parliament, calling on the international community to “commit to a world refugee program”.

Mr Macpherson pointed out it is a “curious thing” he is not calling on Arab nations to take in Palestinian refugees instead.

The atrocity has exposed the Hamas supporters, it is now known who they are and they can no longer hide in the shadows. In this light, the deaths of the Oct 7 Jews will not be in vain.

That is an important observation that applies worldwide, but particularly in this country. To some degree, I have not been surprised by the ugly, mindless hostility from parts of our Middle Eastern community. Once again, we deploy the fateful decision of a past Prime Minister (was it Malcolm Fraser) to admit a particular group from the hills of Lebanon.

However, perhaps even more shocking is the unabashed anti-Semitism coming for the mouths of the Greens, and some Teals. While they baulk at actual support for Hamas, the implication is there in their unreserved support for any opposition – no matter what form it takes – to Israel.

The woman says just over six weeks later, in November 2021, she was at home speaking with her flatmate’s mother when the conversation turned to the Higgins case; she decided to search the internet on her phone and realised the man was Mr Lehrmann.

…and realised the man was Mr Lehrmann, and she might be able to get some money out of this.

If it was rape as she alleges why didn’t she go to to the fuzz the next day? She had his phone number and that’s all they needed to track the alleged perp down.

Explosive Journal report reveals an arms-smuggling route direct from Iran to ‘Palestinian’ terrorists… disguised as aid packages (26 Oct)

Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal published a bombshell report, identifying an arms-trafficking scheme in which “Iran and its allies” have been smuggling heavy weapons and small arms to the jihadi terrorists occupying certain areas of Israel … the arms flowing from the terrorist regimes to the smaller terrorist groups, often comes disguised as aid packages.

I mentioned how the 20 truckloads the Egyptians let through some days ago (1) weren’t inspected and (2) had “Egyptian Red Crescent” and “Government of Qatar” emblazoned on them. Qatar hosts the Hamas leadership. I wonder what was in the “aid” trucks?

I’m not sure I would call it a Shakedown but one of the real problems with politics (and especially Liar) politics is internal party success is all about controlling the numbers. In government that must be tempered by the National interest. While the Lieborals are by no means perfect, on balance I would say they do it better than the Liars.

More indication that Qatar and Egypt are up to their necks in this.

How the Hamas Attack Took Israel by Surprise (25 Oct, via Lucianne)

A week before its attack Hamas agreed to another truce with Israel. The agreement negotiated by Qatar, Egypt and the United Nations traded an end to border attacks for more imports, a bigger fishing zone and more work permits that allowed 20,000 Gaza Muslims to enter Israel.

Qatar, a state sponsor of Hamas and an ally of the United States, claimed that it had “succeeded in de-escalating the situation in the Gaza Strip by mediating an understanding.”

Hamas ended the border riots and Israelis went into the Sukkot holiday with an apparent calm. The Israeli army and security forces continued to focus on the West Bank, where much of the violence appeared to be coming from, rather than the Gaza Strip which seemed quiet.

But the border attacks and the negotiated ceasefire had all been part of a feint. Hamas had been working on a large-scale attack for two years. During this time it had calculatedly tamped down some of the violence and appeared amenable to informal truces in exchange for benefits.

We’ll see just how much in the way of arms and munitions got into Gaza under the cover of Qatari and Egyptian camouflage. I suspect a lot, especially given the sheer tonnage of propellant Hamas rockets have been using.

Nothing to do with you, Vicki, but this really is the ultimate hippy fantasy: selling household power to an electricity supplier instead of providing reliable, affordable power to both households and industry, all paid for via subsidies, which are effectively taxes on consumers, whether they use electricity or not.

‘I don’t know that she’s awfully well’: Linda Burney rumoured to become next Governor-General despite Voice failure

Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney is reportedly under consideration to become Australia’s next Governor-General but some former Parliamentary colleagues are not pleased with the pick.

Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney is reportedly on the shortlist to become Australia’s next Governor-General but some former Parliamentary colleagues have raised concerns about her selection.

It is understood Ms Burney is being floated by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to replace Governor-General David Hurley when his tenure ends in July 2024.

Although Mr Hurley still has eight months left in his position, the Prime Minister is expected to deliver his shortlist of candidates to King Charles by the end of the year.

On Thursday, the Daily Mail approached Ms Burney’s office to confirm the speculation but a spokesperson declined to comment on the discussions.

If Ms Burney does secure the role, the 66-year-old will become Australia’s first Indigenous head of state.

Despite the symbolism of selecting Australia’s first Aboriginal head of state, former speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop raised concerns over the pick and questioned Ms Burney’s physical health.

“My concern for Linda Burney is that it’s a very vigorous job, it’s very busy and honestly I don’t know that she’s awfully well,” she told Sky News Australia on Thursday.

In August, Ms Burney went public about suffering a mini-stroke and undergoing heart surgery in 2020, and revealed she takes medication to manage her heart which has impacted her speaking voice.

As Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ms Burney emerged as one of the most prominent faces of the Yes campaign during the referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament that was ultimately defeated.

Commentator and Small Business Women Australia entrepreneur Amanda Rose called Ms Burney’s consideration for the role “concerning” and suggested she may have been promised the position in exchange for fronting the failed Voice to Parliament referendum.

“When it comes to politics it’s all about deals, and I have a suspicion that the deal was, ‘if you lead this Yes campaign we’ll give you the role,’” she said.

“(Linda) probably said ‘you promised this and I want it.’”

Across the Tasman Sea, the people of Aotearoa, New Zealand, have also been following Australia’s Voice referendum debate.

But for Whakaata M?ori news producer Roihana Nuri, the failed referendum does not come as a shock.

“It’s just symptomatic of where I think Australia is at, which is pretty much the stone age.”

I get the impression this person is not talking about Australia as such. It’s no secret that Maoris and Aboriginals don’t get along, and that Maoris regard Aboriginals as…well…he said it.

When I used to teach, I worked at a rough high school. The brawls between the Maori and Aboriginal students were something else. The parents weren’t above getting stuck into each other at times, either.

Australia’s electricity “system” is a hippy joke.

Tom – I had a look at the AEMO numbers when I posted the story earlier about offshore windfarms needing $200/MWh to be economic.

SA and Vic were at about minus $12/MWh. The other states up to $30/MWh.

Right now as I write this SA and Vic are at, wait for it, minus $188/MWh. NSW is at plus $120/MWh and Tassie at plus $320/MWh.

What a way to run an electricity system. It’s crazy. Selling solar electricity into negative prices at a fixed IPART rate is insane.

https://aemo.com.au/aemo/apps/visualisations/elec-nem-summary-tiles.html

And just as I press Post Comment it’s all changed again: SA $-84, Vic $-89, NSW $+300, Tas $+11 and Qld $+5. It’s like watching an AFL match not a utility electricity wholesale market.

This would explain why defence been keen to get details from her phone. However you are no longer able to have a go at credibility of females as we are now in the “believe all females” era.

Since she only decided to make a report 6 weeks later then no evidence apart from apparently camera footage showing him with her that night. In relation to how the act took place it is only her word against his.

Erdan shows attempted beheading in uphill bid to block UNGA resolution ignoring Hamas

Jordan-backed, non-binding measure urging immediate ceasefire likely to pass Friday due to pro-Palestinian majority in 193-member body; Iran claims it can help in releasing hostages

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan on Thursday played a video of a Hamas terrorist trying to decapitate a Thai worker with a garden hoe during the October 7 onslaught in southern Israel, as the envoy faced an uphill battle to convince General Assembly members not to back a Jordanian resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza that makes no mention of Hamas.

The resolution, which will come to a vote on Friday, is expected to pass given majority support for the Palestinians among member states. However, UNGA resolutions are non-binding and largely symbolic.

The text calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all civilian hostages, the protection of civilians and international institutions, and ensuring the safe passage of humanitarian aid into the Strip.

The draft resolution also calls on Israel to rescind its order for Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate to the south. Israel says the directive is to protect civilians as it apparently plans to launch a ground incursion that will focus on the northern part of the enclave. Palestinians note that some of those who have evacuated to the south have still been killed in Israeli airstrikes, and the UN resolution casts the measure as an attempt at “forced transfer of the Palestinian civilian population.”

Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza erupted after thousands of terrorists burst through the border and rampaged through more than 20 communities. The terrorists killed some 1,400 people, the vast majority of them civilians, massacring them at their homes and at a music festival. They also abducted over 220 people to the Strip as hostages.

Post

Ambassador Gilad Erdan ???? ????

@giladerdan1

This is not Auschwitz – it’s Hamas! We are not fighting against humans – we are fighting monsters! Israel will not stop until Hamas is destroyed!

This is what I said at the General Assembly podium when I showed footage of Israeli civilians burnt alive by Hamas and of Hamas savages beheading an wounded Thai civilian.

His crime? Being alive in Israel.

This is the true face of Hamas !!

Watch and retweet >> – B’Hell the Palestinians are trying to decapitate the Thai Man with a Garden Hoe & Labor, Greens and Idiot Australians support these Savages & Barbarians

The images included piles of burned bodies, a baby shot in its bed, civilians lying dead in cars and in the street, and a gagged woman who had been burned to death.

In his address, Erdan showed the General Assembly a brief video of a Hamas terrorist trying to decapitate a Thai worker with a garden tool during the October 7 onslaught.

“I have seen much footage over the past weeks that will be seared into my mind forever, but there is one sight that I keep on seeing when I try to sleep. In the video, one can see a terribly injured civilian – bloodied, yet alive – laying on the ground as a Hamas savage screaming Allahu Akbar repeatedly pummels the man’s neck with a garden hoe in order to decapitate him,” the UN envoy said.

“The man on the ground is an agricultural worker from Thailand. He is not Israeli. He is not Jewish. He was merely alive, trying to make a living for his family. But he was decapitated with a blunt gardening tool. Horrifying! Israel is not at war with human beings, we are at war with monsters,” he added.

Describing the horrific massacre, Erdan said the purpose of the terrorists was to “savagely murder every living thing they encountered. Hamas Nazi murderers went from house to house with hit lists.”

The Israeli envoy insisted that “This is not a war with the Palestinians. Israel is at war with the genocidal Hamas terrorist organization… Modern-day Nazis.”

“Hamas does not care about the Palestinian people. Hamas has only one goal: to annihilate Israel,” Erdan said.

“The drafters of the resolution claim to be concerned about ‘peace,’ yet the depraved murderers who initiated this war are not even mentioned in the resolution,” he said.

“They see each one of you as a puppet. They write a resolution completely devoid of any content related to the situation.

They assume that you have already forgotten who it is that is responsible for the inhuman violence, and they just expect you to support it.

This resolution is a disgrace to your intelligence. It is unfathomable that such a resolution – one that doesn’t even mention Hamas – could possibly be voted upon,” he stated.

LOL. Full details:

The woman alleged she met Lehrmann on a night out that began when she joined friends at the Powerhouse music venue in Toowoomba.

After drinking with friends, she then went to a strip club called The Vault, where she consumed more alcohol and met Mr Lehrmann.

Mr Lehrmann allegedly introduced himself as ‘Bryce’.

Later, police allege the woman took a taxi with Mr Lehrmann to his friend’s house.

They had sex once that night and twice in the morning, but the woman alleges the last two times were not consensual because he allegedly wasn’t wearing a condom.

Failing to wear a condom without a partner’s permission is considered sexual assault under Queensland law.

According to a court brief obtained exclusively by The Australian newspaper, the pair used cocaine during the night.

Police will allege the woman told Mr Lehrmann she needed a morning-after pill and that he agreed to drive her to a chemist in a farm ute.

Afterwards, she allegedly asked Mr Lehrmann to take her home and he stopped at McDonald’s on the way.

It will be alleged in court that the pair exchanged messages on Snapchat for a few days after the encounter, but soon lost contact.

Weeks later, the woman was allegedly speaking to a friend’s mother about the Brittany Higgins case when she searched for details on her phone and saw Mr Lehrmann’s photo – and recognised him as the same person who allegedly had sex with her.

The woman reported the matter to police the next day before making a formal statement.

As others here have noted, the activist J-school kiddies at The Australian have perfected their method of making sure no comment they disapprove of is ever published: it is simply left in the “pending” queue for hours or days.

Today’s example is a particularly pissantish example of non-journalism from US correspondent Adam Creighton:

The former president [DonaldTrump}, if re-elected late next year, could yet derail the AUKUS security pact, which is yet to enjoy the endorsement of congress, a body which elected a Trump ally as Speaker, Louisiana congressman Mike Johnson, on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT).

Trump hasn’t suggested anything of the kind. Creighton just made the story up — to which I replied:

The least Adam Creighton could have done was ask Donald Trump whether a second Trump presidency would torpedo the AUKUS submarines deal. But no. All Creighton presents is speculation — further proof that, if you want actual information about US politics, the last place you look is the mainstream Australian media.

Even though the story has only three comments published, mine is still in the “pending” queue after an hour. I’m confident that, if I check back this time tomorrow, my comment will still be in the pending queue.

Mission accomplished, J-school zombies!

Kamala Harris praises Australian gun laws (Sky News, 27 Oct)

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has praised Australia’s gun laws while addressing yesterday’s deadly mass shooting in the state of Maine.

“Gun violence has terrorised and traumatised so many of our communities in this country,” Ms Harris told the state luncheon on Wednesday (local time).

“And let us be clear, it does not have to be this way, as our friends in Australia have demonstrated.”

I’m Sorry, But I Can’t Tip the Whole World

Everyone today—from cashiers to robot kiosks—expects a big gratuity for ringing up an order. Olivia Reingold asks: Can you refuse without looking like a jerk?

This summer I was at Newark Airport, racing down a moving walkway to grab a bottle of water before takeoff. I snatched a Smartwater, scanned it at a self-checkout, and then gritted my teeth at the price: $8.

What a rip-off, I thought. But I know retailers hold us captive at the airport, so with no other options, I swiped my card.

Suddenly another notification flashed in my face: Would you like to add a tip?
The kiosk listed three amounts: 15%, 18%, 20%.

The chutzpah of this robot.

Surely it was infected with a virus to think it could ask me, a human, for a tip at a time when inflation has hit record highs.

This is where we find ourselves in 2023. After enduring three years of rising prices, where the cost of ground coffee, gasoline, and other staples has jumped by 20 percent since 2020, the machines are now asking us for spare change.

But we humans can’t pony up, because we are struggling. At least half of people making over $100,000 are living paycheck to paycheck, according to one study. The majority of Americans now have less money than they did before the pandemic.

So when a barista looks up at me, as one recently did on a Saturday morning in Brooklyn, and flips a monitor around asking me if I want to add a tip on top of a $6 latte that became $9.08 after the upcharges for oat milk, ice, and tax, my answer is no.

But even so, I could feel the stares of four or five Brooklynites in line behind me, huffing in their ironic carpentry pants and “work” boots. To them, I knew the tipping prompt read like this: Do you care if your comrade eats tonight?

To which my answer is yes. I mean, no. I mean, maybe—but only if the standard were still 10 to 15 percent. Now, a 20 percent tip is considered the floor, with many tip screens urging customers to go 30 percent and up—even though most things cost 20 percent more than they did pre-pandemic.

Turns out I’m not the only curmudgeon out there.

The internet is awash with complaints about tipping inflation gone mad. In early August, one online commenter was baffled when they went to pay the $40,000 bill for their home upgrades, and the online form asked if they wanted to show their “appreciation” by adding a 5 to 15 percent tip.

The average American doesn’t have a thousand dollars set aside for emergencies, let alone a $6,000 token of gratitude.

Others have bemoaned that online clothing boutiques and discount travel sites are now asking for tips during the checkout process to “show support for the team.”

Then there are the restaurants that demand we cover not just tips, but various service charges too, like “employee wellness fees.”

These extra costs, first introduced during Covid, have outlasted the virus.

In Washington D.C., some residents were so fed up that they started tracking these charges in a spreadsheet, which now has over 200 entries and counting.

But food deliveries are where tips really take the cake.

This past spring, one courier bemoaned to The New York Times that he was tipped “just” $20 for delivering $388 worth of sushi in Los Angeles.

“It’s hard to fathom how people could have so much money,” Brantley Bush said, “and tip so little.”

That makes sense if you replace the word tip with donate. But in theory, this is a business transaction, not a charity. Twenty dollars isn’t bad when you have to work a full hour at a minimum wage job in Los Angeles to earn $15.50.

Some couriers are even holding orders hostage until the customer forks over a bigger tip.

In May, one Reddit user posted that her DoorDash driver sent her almost ten messages in a row, badgering her for a tip after claiming the restaurant made him wait too long for her order.

That was after she had already tipped him $5 for what she said was a “small order” from a restaurant less than three miles away.

“As someone who has worked in delivery myself for 5+ years, I find asking for an extra tip in very poor taste and I sincerely hope this is not normal practice for you,” the customer scolded the Dasher.

To be clear, the problem isn’t that I don’t want to tip. I do. But I can’t when it’s coming from the Lyft driver, the bathroom attendant, the hairdresser, and every cashier I meet. While my empathy may be limitless, my funds are not.

So, in a moment when everyone’s feeling the squeeze, how do you turn down these requests with class?

Sydney man denies intimidating teens who displayed Israeli flag
https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/sydney-man-denies-intimidating-teens-who-displayed-israeli-flag-20231027-p5efhi.html

A Sydney man has denied intimidating four teenagers who displayed an Israeli flag in the eastern suburbs, after he was ordered to front court despite his lawyer’s attempts for him to avoid the media.

Abdullah Al-Taay, 23, entered pleas of not guilty to four counts of intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical harm when he faced Downing Centre Local Court on Friday morning.

Police allege Al-Taay verbally threatened the group of teenagers who had the flag on a vehicle on Bellevue Road in Bellevue Hill about 6.30pm on October 9, days after the Israeli-Hamas conflict erupted in the Middle East.

Video published on social media allegedly shows Al-Taay threatening the group, including allegedly saying he would kill them if he saw them with the flag again.

[A frame from video footage allegedly showing Abdullah Al-Taay threatening a group of teens who had an Israeli flag.]

Speaking after Al-Taay was charged, Detective Superintendent Jodie Radmore said the teenagers had been on their way to a nearby vigil.

“The young people were going about their business, they were affixing an Israeli flag to their motor vehicle … when the driver of the vehicle stopped and [allegedly] started to threaten them,” she said.

Al-Taay initially remained outside the court complex on Friday as his lawyer, Aqib Javed, asked to “proceed without his presence inside” due to the media coverage “and all the controversial issues”.

“He is not absent, he is present in the vicinity … he is in a vehicle parked downstairs,” Javed said.

“He’s reluctant to make an appearance [because] of all the media that remains outside.”

The police prosecutor said there were no notes on the file to indicate Al-Taay was excused.

The deputy registrar said Al-Taay should be present and “come up”, and he appeared minutes later inside court when his lawyer reiterated the not guilty pleas. Al-Taay did not respond to questions as he left court and appeared to film the media on his phone.

Al-Taay presented himself to Liverpool police station on October 11 and was charged. He was granted bail the next day on conditions including a ban on attending any protest or rally and a nightly curfew between 8pm and 6am, when he is to remain at his home in Sydney’s south-west.

Al-Taay is also not allowed to enter the eastern suburbs of Bellevue Hill, Double Bay, Woollahra, Queens Park, Bondi Beach, Bondi Junction, Tamarama, Dover Heights, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, Watsons Bay or Randwick except for work.

Missile strikes medical facility in Egyptian city of Taba, 6 injured

Missile strikes medical facility in Egyptian town located near Israeli border. Rocket may have been fired from Yemen and targeted Eilat.

IDF: The incident unfolded “outside of our border”.

A missile struck a medical facility in the Egyptian resort town of Taba, located near the Israeli border overnight Thursday, injuring six people, Reuters reported, citing Egypt’s Al Qahera News.

Taba is a resort town on the Red Sea which is located just opposite the southern Israeli resort city of Eilat.

A witness in Taba reported hearing an explosion and seeing heavy smoke and dust rising.

Al Qahera reported the missile struck a Taba ambulance facility and a residential building for the administration of the Taba Hospital.

Reuters reported that Egyptian security forces arrived at the scene and are investigating the incident. It is suspected that the missile was fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen and was directed towards Eilat, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Harvard ‘doxxing truck’ parks outside homes of students who blamed Israel for Hamas attacks

The “doxxing truck” that circled Harvard University’s campus to expose Ivy Leaguers who allegedly signed a letter blaming Israel for Hamas’ attacks has been beaming the photos of some student leaders outside their homes, The Post has learned.

Adam Guillette — the president of news watchdog Accuracy in Media, which deployed the vehicle — told The Post that his organization “expanded our fight against antisemitism at Harvard” by selecting student leaders of the 34 Harvard groups that co-signed a statement saying Israel is “entirely responsible” for Hamas’ attacks, and parking the digital billboard-bearing box truck near their residences.

“We only focus on leaders of these organizations rather than members,” Guillette said Thursday, adding the students’ home addresses “were very easily publicly available.”

On Wednesday, the truck idled in front of the Boston-area home of a 20-year-old female Harvard student who leads one of the groups that did not explicitly condemn Hamas, he said.

The truck’s giant LED screens — hung on the sides and back of the truck — displayed the words “Harvard’s Leading Antisemites” in gothic script over a headshot of the Ivy Leaguer who reportedly lived in the home, with her name in bold, red block letters.

“The homeowner called law enforcement” once they spotted the truck outside, Guillette said.

“As is always the case, authorities explained that we’re not breaking any laws,” Guillette said of the truck, which was deployed “so everyone in the community can learn who the antisemites are among them.”

Law enforcement officers at the scene even told the homeowner “not to threaten the mobile billboard driver,” he claimed

The group deployed the truck because, “in addition to educating their colleagues and neighbors on campus, everyone in their community should learn who the antisemites are among them,” Guillette said.

The vehicle also displayed a website that exposed the student for “believing that Israelis are to blame for the terrorist attacks by Hamas,” the URL says.

“This represents the ‘best’ of Harvard,” the website’s landing page adds, which notes that this student has “not been disciplined by the university” and boasts a call-to-action button that links to HarvardHatesJews.com, a forum that encourages users to send an email to members of Harvard’s board of trustees.

“Tell them to take action against these despicable, hateful students,” the forum says, offering a pre-written message to send the board, which reads: “As an overseer at Harvard, you have a moral obligation to take a stand against the antisemites on campus who issued a statement in support of Hamas,” and urges these high-ranking staffers to “expel these students and kick their organizations off campus immediately.”

“We’ve purchased domain names of most of the leaders and set up profile pages to educate the public on what they’ve done,” Guilette said.

The watchdog president said he’s also tapped “search-engine optimization experts to make it that if anyone Googles the student leaders’ names, [the website] is among one of the first results to pop up.”

And as of next week, Accuracy in Media plans to deploy geo-targeted ads — which delivers content to users within a defined geographic boundary — “to phones, laptops and smart televisions of anyone who’s been on [Harvard’s] campus within the last 60 days, with images similar to the mobile billboard,” Guilette said.

On Thursday and Friday, Guillette said the truck will visit homes of Harvard students in Vermont, near Burlington.

Guillette wasn’t sure how many students’ homes Accuracy in Media’s doxxing truck would visit in total, though it will surely visit “more next week and the week after that,” and it will “maintain presence at Harvard for some time,” he said.

CNN Issues Humiliating Correction, Admits to Unquestioningly Parroting Terrorist Talking Points

The disinformation operation known as CNN has issued a correction to a story that claimed Israel had bombed a hospital in Gaza, a claim that has since been proven false.

In the correction, the far-left, low-rated network essentially admitted that it had breathlessly parroted Hamas’ narrative without a second thought.

CNN was among numerous establishment media outlets (and elected officials) that jumped on claims that Israel targeted a hospital in Gaza last week.

An archive of the network’s initial story on the blast shows a headline blaring, “Israel hits hospital and school in Gaza as blockade puts healthcare system in state of ‘collapse.’”

“A school and a hospital in Gaza were among the places lethally blasted by Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday as humanitarian concerns mount over ongoing deprivation of food, fuel and electricity to the isolated population,” CNN irresponsibly reported.

“The strike on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza is likely to have killed hundreds, the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement, adding that there are still many people under the hospital rubble. CNN has asked the IDF for comment on [the] hospital strike.”

Those lines were the opener of a lengthy report on the plight of Gazans “under siege” by Israel, which is retaliating against Hamas after the terrorist group killed, wounded, raped and kidnapped thousands of Israeli civilians on Oct. 7.

Naturally, there was much more to the story than what CNN reported, including the fact that the Palestinian Health Ministry — the source of the inflammatory claim that Israel bombed the hospital — is controlled by Hamas.

It turns out that Islamic militants fired the rocket that hit the hospital, not Israel. That rocket was probably intended to kill Israeli civilians but instead killed Palestinians — and much fewer than Hamas claimed.

That’s exactly what Israel said had happened, and what it presumably would have told CNN had the network waited for a comment instead of rushing to publish fake news on the word of terrorists.

CNN isn’t sorry for reporting fake news. It is not apologizing for carrying water for people who murder women and children.

Instead, it quietly issued a correction that is highly unlikely to reach as many readers as its initial, false reporting did.

The correction reads:

“CORRECTION: This article on the Gaza hospital blast initially did not clearly attribute claims about Israel’s responsibility to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza. Israel later said a ‘misfired’ rocket by militant group Islamic Jihad caused the blast and produced evidence to support its claim.

“US President Joe Biden said the Israeli position is backed by US intelligence. CNN’s forensic analysis of images and videos suggests a rocket fired from within Gaza caused the blast, not an Israeli airstrike.”

CNN’s decision to correct the record is, of course, better late than never. But the damage has already been done.

The saga goes to show just how much resistance Israel is facing from all sides as it tries to prevent its citizens from being annihilated by jihadists.

The country can’t even count on the American media to sort out the facts before making itself a megaphone for people whose sole goal in life is to wipe Israel off the map.

There is simply no bottom to how low the far-left media will stoop.

The right loses so often because many of its champions are nihilistic, unchurched yobbos.

Unchurched yobbos they may ne, but how much Hanson and Murray are of the right might be debatable.

Be that as it may, Australian public life is really missing input from serious Christians.

Greg Sheridan, Frank Brennan and Greg Craven have a mixed record at best.

Lyle Shelton is a good activist but he’s not a public intellectual.

The support of the mainstream churches for the Voice was superficial and wrong-headed (and I’d suggest those responsible have learned nothing from it). I shudder to think what they’re saying about Israel-Palestine, and for the sake of my blood pressure I haven’t gone looking.

The Mainstream Press Is So Awful on Hamas That John Kirby Just Owned Them

It’s Thursday, October 26th, and pigs have flown. That was the story after John Kirby managed to actually come out on top of an exchange with a reporter.

After being criticized for questioning the casualty numbers coming out of Gaza, Kirby let loose, not only doubling down but doing so in a way that would almost make one forget he works for the Biden administration.

Krähenbühl: So, besides saying that he doesn’t have confidence in these numbers, the President went further to say that innocents will die and that this is the price of the war. You also said that.

Kirby: I have indeed.

Krähenbühl: Don’t you think this is insensitive? There’s being very harsh criticism in about it.

For example, the Council of American-Islamic Relations said it was deeply disturbed and call on the President to apologize. Would the President apologize?”

Kirby: No.

Krähenbühl: And does he regret saying something like that?

Kirby: What’s harsh

what’s harsh is the way Hamas is using people as human shields.

What’s harsh is taking a couple of hundred hostages and leaving families and anxious, waiting and worrying to figure out where their loved ones are.

What’s harsh, is dropping in on a music festival and slaughtering a bunch of young people just trying to enjoy an afternoon.

I could go on and on.

That’s what’s harsh. That is what’s harsh and being honest about the fact that there have been civilian casualties and that there likely will be more is being honest,

because that’s what war is.

It’s brutal. It’s ugly. It’s messy.

I’ve said that before. President also said that yesterday. Doesn’t mean we have to like it. And it doesn’t mean that we’re dismissing anyone of those casualties each and every one is a tragedy in its own right…

It would be helpful if Hamas would let [Gazans] leave….We know that there are thousands waiting to leave Gaza writ large and Hamas is preventing them from doing it. That is what is harsh.

The Hamas-led “Ministry of Health” in Gaza has a long record of inflating death tolls, including faking pictures and videos, for propaganda reasons. It is simply not a credible source in any way whatsoever.

Went to see Killers of the Flower Moon. Long at 206 minutes.

Apple produced it and must have money to burn as apparently cost $300m. I guess DiCaprio and De Niro and Scorcese took up a big chunk of $100m

Interesting that the Osage Indians in 1920’s were richest group of people in the world. They even had the scene where car salesman says if car runs out of petrol they should go back to buy another one.

Unfortunately all that money led to a lot of sudden deaths. Seems some husband’s were quite keen to get to the “Till death is do part” bit

Rule no 1 when killing somebody and trying to make it look like a suicide: don’t shoot them in back of the head and take gun with you. Even corrupt cops have difficulties with that scenario.

As well as – Raelene has won a legal bid to stop Woodside from performing seismic blasting on her Country

The Mardudhunera woman argued that blasting was approved despite inadequate consultation with Traditional Owners.

A Traditional Owner has successfully challenged in the Federal Court Woodside Energy’s plan to begin seismic blasting off northern Western Australia as part of its Scarborough Gas Project.

Seismic testing involves ships towing special airguns that blast compressed air, creating pulses of sound.

This sound energy is directed at the sea floor and penetrates underlying rock layers, with the sound patterns recorded used to build a picture of geological layers, and oil and gas reserves, beneath the seabed.

According to the Environmental Defender’s Office, which is representing Ms Cooper, the impacts of seismic blasting on marine animals such as whales can include damage to their hearing and their ability to communicate, stress, displacement from habitat, physical injuries and death.

Woodside argued that the ongoing delay to starting its seismic survey is causing significant costs.

The massive Scarborough field is located about 375km off WA’s northwest coast.

The gas project will be connected to new offshore facilities by a 430km pipeline to the onshore Pluto liquid natural gas facility, near Karratha.

The project’s development phase will include the installation of a floating production unit with eight wells drilled initially, and 13 wells across the life of the gas field.

This has been the agenda all along. To basically reverse the onus of proof, limit any cross-examination of complainants, the acceptance of the complainant’s statement as fact which the defence has to disprove and the defendant will be forced to be cross-examined on, and eliminate juries so that the likes of the ACT Chief Justice can play fish in a barrel with hapless defendants.
The first para of the story …

An investigation into juryless rape trials, a crackdown on “inappropriate” questions from defence lawyers and a ban on wigs and gowns in court are part of a blueprint to overhaul the justice system’s approach to sexual assault cases

Palestinian society has been ‘hijacked’ by Hamas

Mosab Hassan Yousef, eldest son of Hamas co-founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, says the blood of civilians is on the “hands of Hamas” and Hamas only.

The attacks by Hamas against Israel’s civilian population constitute war crimes, according to the United Nations.

“Many civilians are dying – their blood is on the hands of Hamas and Hamas only,” Mr Yousef told Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan.

“It’s a fact that Hamas uses civilians as human shields.

“It’s a fact that Israel called and warned civilians to evacuate buildings before they strike them, but in the meantime Hamas put roadblocks to stop civilians from evacuating to safe zones.”

According to Hamas, at least 7,000 civilians have been killed in Gaza since October 7, however this figure has been disputed.

New poll reveals Palaszczuk’s popularity has slumped to lowest in eight years, as more voters fear Qld heading in ‘wrong direction’

A new poll has revealed Annastacia Palaszczuk is the equal most unpopular premier on record, as more Queenslanders fear the state is heading in the wrong direction.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s performance rating has hit an all-time low, as residents express concern about the direction the state is heading.

A poll conducted by YouGov for the Courier Mail has revealed Ms Palaszczuk is no longer the preferred Premier of the state for the first time since she was elected eight years ago in 2015.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has scraped past the Labor leader by a close margin of 37-35 per cent.

Ms Palaszczuk’s net satisfaction rating has plummeted to negative 20, tying with former premier Campbell Newman for the worst result on record in the Courier Mail’s YouGov polling.

Mr Newman, who was in office from March 2012 to February 2015, scored the same net result in August 2014.

According to the latest poll, 52 per cent of respondents are dissatisfied with Ms Palaszczuk’s performance as Premier while 32 per cent are content with how she is doing her job.

Sixteen per cent of people surveyed were uncommitted.

In the two-party-preferred stakes, the LNP has maintained its lead over Labor 52-48 per cent.

In March, the LNP had scored 51 per cent compared to the government which received 49 per cent.

Asked which party Queenslanders would vote for if an election was held today, 41 per cent of respondents said the LNP, 33 per cent voted for Labor and 13 per cent opted for the Greens.

Eight per cent voted for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, while Katter’s Australian Party polled a result of two per cent.

Another exclusive poll commissioned for the Courier Mail showed on Friday that 47 per cent of Queenslanders feared the state was heading in the “wrong direction”.

It represented an increase of eight per cent compared to June last year.

Thirty-four per cent of respondents feel Queensland is currently on the right track, a dip from 41 per cent last June.

The poll also explored how respondents were feeling on a financial level amid the current cost-of-living climate.

Australians have begun dying at greatly heightened and disturbing rates, beginning in 2021.

From the figures, the timeline is quite clear.

It started suddenly, and it continues now.

This is not being disclosed by either the media or the medical system.

None of our political and medical authorities seem to care. AMPS cares.

Our organisation is made up of ethical Health Practitioners.

When the Australian Senate voted against holding an inquiry into this excess mortality, AMPS collaborated with independent, committed national and international researchers to conduct the investigation our government refused to do.

On October 18th we held our public inquiry into this phenomenon in the Australian Parliament House in Canberra.

It is no exaggeration to say the figures point to a silent crisis.

The findings of this inquiry have been published in our first book, titled “Too Many Dead: An Inquiry into Australia’s Excess Mortality.”

You can download your own copy of the book and view the full recorded proceedings from the inquiry by visiting:

https://amps.redunion.com.au/too-many-dead

You can also put in an expression of interest to have a printed copy mailed to you.

We are proud of this book. It has the potential to put important facts into the hands of those reluctant to acknowledge them.

When properly circulated, it can help promote the awakening we all want to see in the political arena. We believe that in due course it will have turned into a landmark in our progress, a point at which the game changed.

The more this book is circulated, the less the authorities can ignore the facts in it.

Australia is in the midst of a health crisis, and this analysis indicates it is iatrogenic.

Too many people are dead and harmed.

This publication is ground-breaking.

Nobody else has done this, providing the science at an unimpeachable level, and putting it into hard copy. It delves deep into the potential causes of excess mortality in Australia, shedding light on crucial issues that demand attention, for the health and safety of our families, and our nation.

It draws clear conclusions, ones that should have been arrived at by government instrumentalities a long time ago – but were not.

In Canberra at the time of the launch we had the privilege of meeting with influential policymakers and key stakeholders, discussing pressing issues related to healthcare, mortality rates, and public welfare.

This book is going to be a foundation stone in our lobbying efforts as we continue our fight for medical free speech and ethical evidence-based public health.

It is being sent in hard copy and also in its digital form to numerous people in positions of influence, including politicians, public servants and schools of health. We are keen to promote it and we hope that you will help us endorse it and push it as far as you can through your own personal and social networks.

Your support matters and you are valued. Our achievements would not have been possible without your unwavering commitment. Your contribution has played a big role in our endeavours. We deeply appreciate your involvement. It has helped us make substantial strides in bringing attention to critical matters that affect our society as a whole.

Australians deserve accountability, transparency and justice. Thank you once again for being an integral support of our organisation. Together, we are having a notable effect and driving positive change.

Warm regards,

Labor Federal Minister Tony Burke ‘very proud’ Sydney council in his electorate unanimously voted to fly Palestinian flag

Labor Employment Minister Tony Burke has expressed his support for a council in his electorate after it made the decision to raise the Palestinian flag until a ceasefire is declared in the Middle East despite stiff opposition to the move.

Employment Minister Tony Burke has thrown his support behind the decision of a council in his electorate of Watson to raise the Palestinian flag until a ceasefire is declared in the war-torn Middle East.

Canterbury-Bankstown Council this week unanimously voted to fly the red, black, white and green flag at Paul Keating Park and the Campsie Administration building.

The proposal hoped to provide a place to mourn for the 2.2 million Palestinian population in Gaza without essential supplies like food, water, fuel and medicine supplies and sheltering from unrelenting bombing.

Mr Burke, whose electorate has one of the largest Muslim populations, said he supported the decision “completely” as a way to “truly represent the grief in the community”.

“In my part of Sydney, people are watching, everyday, death, they’re watching, everyday, images, sometimes of people they know, often of children. Often the images they are seeing turn out to be people they know,” he told ABC RN Breakfast on Friday.

“From Belmore, Lakemba, where I live in Punchbowl, through to Bankstown, pretty much everybody knows somebody who has lost someone.

“Until the council made that decision, there was nowhere in Australia where those colours were being acknowledged as worthy of grieving.

“I’m really glad that the council made that decision. I’m very proud that it was my local council.”

The Employment Minister took aim at “selective grief” occupying the debate across the nation and stressed both tragedies should be acknowledged.

“We need to be able to distinguish, in the debate in Australia, between Hamas and Palestinians. There has been too many occasions where the two have been conflated,” he told ABC RN Breakfast.

“We can’t say we only grieve for certain people who are slaughtered. We can’t have a situation as a nation where we only formally acknowledge particular deaths.”

The decision by the western Sydney council has however sparked outrage from the Jewish community who argued the gesture represented support for the Hamas terrorists themselves.

“Flying the Palestinian Arab flag after the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust was carried out in its name is like flying the German flag right after Kristallnacht, the Japanese flag right after Pearl Harbour or raising the Taliban flag after September 11,” Australian Jewish Association (AJA) CEO Robert Gregory told SkyNews.com.au.

Zionist Federation of Australia President Jeremy Leibler said no one was denying the impact of the war on innocent civilians in both Gaza and Israel, but argued the Canterbury-Bankstown Council’s decision “confuses the issue” because it “will lead people into thinking Gazan suffering is Israel’s fault.”

“Hamas began this war with its slaughter of over a thousand civilians. And by preventing civilians from leaving northern Gaza, and by using civilian buildings for military purposes, Hamas is purposefully endangering civilian life in Gaza,” Mr Leibler told SkyNews.com.au.

“The Council claims it is concerned about the impact on civilians, but its actions suggest it is only concerned about the impact of just one side’s civilians. Maybe the Council should fly both the Israeli and Palestinian flags.”

The Albanese government has maintained its stance on the war in the Middle East. It has admitted Israel has the inherent right to defend itself after Hamas kidnapped more than 200 Israelis and held them hostage in a spider’s web network of underground tunnels.

Labor has simultaneously though called for a ceasefire to allow desperately-needed humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The government, however, has stopped short of publicly supporting Palestine and acting on calls to condemn Israel for its retaliation, which has left thousands dead.

Labor Cabinet Ministers Ed Husic and Anne Aly both broke ranks to publicly support Palestinians while the Greens Party have put forward motions to condemn Israel for its retaliation on innocent civilians, which have been rejected.

In New South Wales, 12 Labor MPs were among 20 signatories on a statement urging the Albanese government to call upon all actors, including Israel, to comply with international humanitarian law.

Following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, Sydney’s Opera House was lit up blue and white which led to violence and anti-Semitic comments at a pro-Palestine rally outside its steps earlier this month.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong brought attention to reports of arson at mosques in Adelaide this week and declared the nation and its political leaders should stand against Islamophobia.

“We all have a responsibility to call out discrimination, hate speech and prejudice wherever we see it,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.

In wake of the divisive nature of the debate, ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess issued a rare statement and warned community leaders to avoid inflaming the debate.

“In this context, it is important that all parties consider the implications for social cohesion when making public statements,” he said in a statement earlier in October.

“As I have said previously, words matter. ASIO has seen direct connections between inflamed language and inflamed community tensions.”

– Once Australia only had to contend with Western culture and civilization issues, multiculturalism socially, politically, and religiously has changed all that.

– I can’t believe this, absolutely wrong. Since when do we support terrorists? This is Australia if our Labor Government doesn’t support ALL our Citizens time for an election, Councils need to get back to basics who do they think they represent .

– Appalling

– Here I thought the government, as a whole, was united against the barbarism of Hamas. I didn’t realize that it was an issue individual members of the government could make up their own minds about.

– But who are we kidding this Burke is simply afraid of losing votes, as per most members of the Labor party, they are simple opportunists who lack any real moral fiber.

How one can see the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas and not condemn them is beyond me.

– Tony Burke….yet another useful marxist idiot. We have a whole Government full of them sadly.

– Burke is about the dumbest member of the Cabinet.

– Burke “very proud ” to see Palestinian Flag flying in his electorate.

Well that, in itself, should be enough to make a lot of Australians NOT vote for Labor. Un-be-liev-a-ble !

“Iran better watch herself”.

It is haram to refer to the Islamic Republic using personal pronouns. Using the term “HERself” to describe God’s republic is an instant fatwa generating blasphemy.

You are being given one chance to redeem yourself. Erase the blasphemy and insert:
“God the all knowing and merciful will watch over and guide the people of Allah in the face of agression by the Great Satan and fellow godless infidels.

God bless Ilham Omar and forgive her for being a non person speaking in your name.

Think the Voice was bad? Labor’s plan for ‘misinformation’ laws is the party’s latest political ploy to give more power to Australia’s unelected officials

The narrative that Australians were hoodwinked by No campaign misinformation during the Voice referendum is now serving as the context for “vague” misinformation legislation that is all about controlling the information we are allowed to see, writes Morgan Begg. Institute of Public Affairs Director of Research

The resounding rejection by the Australian people of the Voice to Parliament is being met not with reflection or humility by the Federal Government, but with a promise to censor online political communication to ensure Australians don’t make the same mistake again.

In a telling moment, days after the referendum was held, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told parliament that “people can be subject to misinformation which in some cases is just about politics but in some cases can be dangerous … you [want] to make sure that elections can be held and democratic processes can be held in an appropriate way”.

This followed days of recriminations from pro-voice advocates and politicians who attributed the referendum result to people being hoodwinked by misinformation from the No campaign.

This narrative is now the context for draft misinformation and disinformation legislation being refined by federal public servants, which would confer extraordinary powers on the Australian Communications and Media Authority and require big tech platforms to censor users.

Former chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Rod Sims recently argued the Federal Government’s proposed misinformation laws “will help Australians better understand what is disinformation and what is simply divergent views”.

This perspective, however, appears to be inconsistent with the views of ACMA.

In a 2021 report, ACMA argued that that online “misinformation” and “disinformation” are “relatively novel and dynamic phenomena” with “no established consensus on the definition of either term”.

The government’s legislative response, released in June, is of little help either.

The words used in the Bill do not refer to objective legal standards and are of such a broad nature it would be impossible for a reasonable person to know how the rules would be enforced over time.

This violates a basic principle of the rule of law, which is that the law must be knowable in order for it to be followed and applied impartially.

Take clause 7 of the Bill, which defines misinformation as false, misleading, or deceptive content that is likely to cause or contribute to “serious harm”.

Where the line is between serious and non-serious harm – if such a line exists – could not be known by reading the Bill.

And while the clause does provide a definition of harm, it is so broad as to provide little practical guidance.

For instance, the Bill seeks to outlaw harm being inflicted on matters ranging from “the integrity of democratic processes”, “the Australian environment”, and the “Australian economy”.

These provisions are so broad that practically any form of speech on any contentious public policy matter would likely be captured by the Bill.

In the absence of objective standards, Australians are asked to take on trust that these concepts would not be misused by unelected, and largely unaccountable, regulators – particularly as the legislation does not provide a right of appeal or review for individuals who are censored.

Beyond the Bill’s vagueness, a central claim made by proponents of misinformation laws is it will not be the Federal Government removing online speech, but it will be outsourced to foreign big tech platforms.

Per the legislation, the role of the ACMA will be to ensure that big tech platforms are maintaining and enforcing codes on misinformation.

Significantly, there are penalties for failing to police misinformation, but no countervailing penalties for wrongly censoring content that is not misinformation.

The reaction by voice advocates following the referendum puts it beyond any doubt the proposed misinformation law is about controlling the information people are allowed to see.

The practical reality is the government would be given the power to pick and choose what content counts as “misinformation”.

This would dramatically undermine the freedom of Australians to exercise their basic democratic rights to participate in public debate about almost any issue.

telling us Computershare was going to steal the referendum? Gave me a nasty fright I must admit.

Yes. Some of the older guys wee had by demoralising leftist rumour-mongering and obvious disinformation. IGNORE IT!

15.57 mn votes have been counted and the vote count is 89% complete.

This means 17.494 mn votes were cast from 17.676 mn enrolled. The national enrolment rate is 97.5%. The turnout was therefore 98.97% and so far 0.9905% informal votes.

No Computershare theft.

No segregation of YES and NO voters.

Two million pre-poll votes will now be counted. They could sway the State and national totals heavily toward NO.

No mass of 30% of the population “just not bothering to turn up and vote, as admitted by the AEC!”. (That never happened).

So far for NO:

QLD: 68.36%
SA: 64.23%
WA: 63.35%
NT: 60.41%
NSW: 59.02%
TAS: 58.98%
VIC: 54.26%
ACT: 38.71%

We should not be sucked in by demoralising left-wing disinformation next time.

I pray you’ll be more vigilant next time.

Contrary to popular belief, the world is not falling apart

While watching the news, it is easy to believe the world is falling apart: climate change, political division, the pandemic, Russia’s ruthless war on Ukraine and Hamas’s unjustifiable killings. But it may be worth stepping back to get some perspective.

By JORDAN PETERSON and BJORN LOMBORG

While watching the news, it is easy to believe the world is falling apart: climate change, political division, coups d’etat, the pandemic, Russia’s ruthless war on Ukraine, Hamas’s unjustifiable killings and the Middle East careering towards widespread violence.

Before panicking, it may be worth stepping back to get some perspective. Media-driven fear demoralises us – particularly when young – and engenders terrible political decisions by crippling our ability to do better.

War is endlessly and eternally horrific. It is understandable and even necessary that the media spotlights today’s conflicts.

But this can make us believe we’re living through unprecedented violence. Russia’s war indeed meant that battle deaths last year reached a high for this century, but they are still very low historically.

Last year, 3.5 in 100,000 people died as a consequence of war, below even the 1980s and far below the 20th century average of 30 per 100,000. The world has in fact become much more peaceful.

This is, of course, little consolation to those living amid the world’s conflicts. But the data speaks to the problem with the constant barrage of contextless catastrophe and doom. Analysis of media content across 130 countries from 1970 to 2010 indicates that the emotional tone has dramatically and consistently become more negative. Negativity sells but it informs badly.

The same pattern characterises climate change reporting. A pervasive and false apocalyptic narrative draws together every negative event – ignoring, almost entirely, the bigger picture.

In recent months, for example, fires have been highlighted without indication that the annual burned global area has been declining for decades, reaching the lowest last year.

Likewise, deaths from droughts and floods make headlines but we don’t hear that deaths from such climate-related disasters have declined 50-fold across the past century.

The data shows what we all fundamentally know: the world has improved dramatically. Life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900. Two centuries ago, almost everyone was illiterate. Now, almost everyone can read. In 1820, nearly 90 per cent of people existed in extreme poverty. Now it’s less than 10 per cent. Indoor air pollution has declined dramatically, and its outdoor equivalent has also done so in rich countries. If we could choose when to be born, having all the facts at hand, few would choose any time before today.

This incontrovertible progress has been driven by ethical and responsible conduct, trust, well-functioning markets, the rule of law, scientific innovation and political stability. We have to recognise, appreciate and proclaim the value and comparative rarity of each of these.

The constant barrage of negative stories may lead us to imagine that our progress is about to end. However, the evidence at hand does not support this conclusion.

The latest UN Climate Panel scenarios indicate that the average person will be 4½ times richer by the end of the century than today. Climate change will merely slow progress, such that the average person will be “only” 4.34 times as rich – by no means the end of the world.

Yet fear pushes many to demand an inefficient diversion of hundreds of trillions of dollars to steer the global economy abruptly towards zero carbon emissions.

We need to foster an environment that challenges fearmongering and promotes optimistic yet critical thinking and constructive discussion with regard to the future. We hope our new Alliance for Responsible Citizenship, which will host its first international conference in London next Monday to Wednesday, will be of aid in this regard, bringing people of goodwill and good sense together from around the world to formulate and communicate a positive vision of the future.

To drive progress for the world’s poorest, we should similarly focus on efficient and well-documented policies with enormous benefits. Working with more than 100 of the world’s top economists, one of us has helped identify the best solutions to many of the world’s most insidious problems: basic tuberculosis treatment that will save a million people a year, land tenure reform that lets poorer people reap the benefits, education technology that can deliver three times better learning outcomes, and more.

These policies don’t make for catchy headlines but they can do immense good: for a cost of $US35bn ($55.2bn) annually they would save an astounding 4.2 million lives and make the poorer half of the world $US1.1 trillion richer every year.

If we stop being fear-driven, and instead look to the data and the bigger picture, we can see the world is better than it was and is likely to get better still. We have a responsibility to adopt the very best policies to move ahead.

Future Indigenous policy won’t be rushed, says Burney
Staff writers
Staff writers

Future Indigenous policy will not be rushed, says Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney, as the Albanese government reconsiders its approach following the failed voice referendum.

“This is a big setback for us, there’s no two ways about it,” Ms Burney said on ABC Radio.

“Whilst we can step back and say well the referendum was beaten in every state, we’ve got to remember the silver linings, and one of them is that six million Australians voted with us.

“(There) needs to be an understanding of what Aboriginal organisations are saying, what Aboriginal leaders are saying.”

The call for a new policy approach comes after rumours that Linda Burney is under consideration to assume the role of Governor-General, following the retirement of David Hurley eight months from now.

“This is not about the timetable of the opposition. This is about getting enough respect and time to the community to come forward and say ‘this is where we should be going’,” she continued.

“The really important thing is in the first few weeks of next year, to make sure that we’ve got a road map forward.

“In February we have the Closing the Gap report and that’s always very sobering.”

Yes, JC. That’s my point. Even ignoring compounding (because I can’t be bothered doing the maths 🙂 ) it’s only just a smidge over 1.2% for the quarter.

That’s easily doable (i.e. achievable for the purposes of reporting) by moving some stuff around or having some coincidences.

Not going to get excited until it happens twice… and since the next quarter is the xmas quarter… I’d want to see at least 5.75% annualised as the equivalent.

The Aardvark of Beaconsfield has sads.

Bill Shorten distinguishes sympathy for Palestine from pro-Hamas sentiment while calling for ‘social cohesion’ in Australia (Sky News, 27 Oct)

Government Services Minister Bill Shorten has stressed Australian politicians must strengthen “social cohesion” between communities over the conflict between Israel and Hamas, in light of recent pro-Palestinian sentiment expressed by his fellow party member Tony Burke.

After spending months dividing us by race he is unhappy that we’re divided by race, and don’t have lurve for baby murderers. He’s funny.
