Speaking of cyclists, what’s with the impatient bell ringing when one is walking on the correct side on a shared pathway?

I think there is a sizeable cohort of cyclists who are daily stung by the fact that people do not line the streets cheering on their virtuous means of transportation. They know they are saving the world, so why aren’t other people constantly congratulating them.

Like vegans.

I’d wager more people get their news from their phone or other device than from fta TV these days.

As I had thought would happen Russia has whipped the Dagestan Nazis with a feather and warned ’em. Warned they are!

Vlad has a problem in that a lot of the recent recruitment into the Russian Army has come from the poorer muslim republics. Attracted by the pay and the opportunity to fight. I think he’s decided he needs to be nice to them or it could get very messy. Kadyrov has been buttering up the Chechen population lately too.

Not sure how much stuff he’s been getting from Iran, but it might be a lot.

The Territory’s domestic violence rates are seven times higher than the national average, and of the 83 Territory women killed by their partners, 94 per cent were Indigenous.

And who is looking at these numbers? Who was listening to their voices? Royal Commission anyone? How about the NT Guv’ment and Feral Guv’ment just do their jobs and fix it.

No chance as there are NO votes in it.

if they’re coming up from behind, they’re just giving you warning.

You can’t win as a cyclist, you get abused for belling, or people jump randomly, and you get abused by others for surprising them because you didn’t use a bell.

Musk teases AI chatbot ‘Grok,’ with real-time access to X (5 Nov)

Elon Musk on Saturday unveiled details of his new AI tool called “Grok,” which can access X in real time and will be initially available to the social media platform’s top tier of subscribers.

Musk, the tycoon behind Tesla and SpaceX, said the link-up with X, formerly known as Twitter, is “a massive advantage over other models” of generative AI.

Grok “loves sarcasm. I have no idea who could have guided it this way,” Musk quipped, adding a laughing emoji to his post.

Council in these parts isn’t prone to interventionism but they’ve decided cyclists should sound their bell when approaching pedestrians on parkland pathways (quite a few linear parks in this vicinity) and signs have been erected indicating such. Too many collisions, I gather. Pedestrians are advised to keep left, too.

Beautiful and extremely rare and unlikely aurora Sunday evening in Czech Republic:

https://praguemorning.cz/northern-lights-czechia/

Given such a low latitude, I had to venture off to ChatGPT and ask if this was common or likely:

A very bright pink aurora visible from the entire Czech Republic would be extremely unusual and unlikely. For a very bright pink aurora to be visible across the entire Czech Republic, the solar activity and geomagnetic conditions would need to be extraordinary, and such an event would be a very rare and remarkable occurrence. While it’s not impossible, it’s highly improbable for the Czech Republic to experience such an event under normal circumstances.

Obviously the magnetic field is taking a hammering at the moment?

Speaking of cyclists, what’s with the impatient bell ringing when one is walking on the correct side on a shared pathway?

I throw this open to anyone who has lived in (as opposed to just visiting – you need to be out in the ‘burbs’ away from the centres)…

In Japan you will be walking along and suddenly hear a discordant screech behind you – someone on a mama hair (bicycle) has just hit the brakes. That is their warning to you to get out of the way.

I believe that the point us that they do not ‘ask’ you to move by ringing the bell. They just happen to screech and you just happen to realise you are in the way. There is no personal interaction although the result is exactly the same as if there were.

There are some ‘strange’ attitudes to courtesy in Japan. I would see an old woman get on the train but she would not accept when I offered my seat. However, if instead I waited until we were near the next stop and got up and stood near the door she would take it – it was not like a favour any more. The fact I did not get off led to no awkwardness.

And Mamachari? The basic bicycle
<emeveryone owns. Cheap, no gears, light, practical – when you see scenes in Asia where there are tides of bicycles washing over streets and intersections, these are the kind of things you are looking at. The name mamachari is understood as meaning mothers bicycle, but everyone rides them – young or old, man or woman, business man or student. I even heard that the ‘chari’ part was short for ‘chariot’ which would be fun etymology but a little to alien to ordinary people – unless it was in a manga of something popular and demotic.

Russia isn’t ‘backing’ Hamas.

Depends how you define “backing.”

Their ambassador to the UN said Israel’s actions in Gaza do not constitute self-defence, “as an occupying power, it does not have such a right, which was confirmed by the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in 2004.” He then went on to claim that Israel was deliberately bombing hospitals and targeting civilians.

Russia isn’t ‘backing’ Hamas.

Yes they are. When someone says “Israel is an occupying power”, which is what the Russian Ambassador said to the world and everyone in the UN General Assembly, you can know that is the Kremlin position.

The hypocrisy is quite breathtaking seeing that Russia is killing lots of Ukrainians by shelling places like Kherson and attacking Kharkov with massed drones.

I think the calculation is purely geopoltical, Putin is a pragmatic guy, but that doesn’t mean it is defensible. Especially when Israel has been trying so hard to stay right away from the Ukraine mess. Z has wanted Iron Dome from the start, and Netanyahu has correctly avoided having anything to do with him. Fine reward for all that effort eh? But since Russia has come down on the terrorists’ side I would not be surprised if Israel now chooses Ukraine’s side. Enemy of my enemy and all that. I don’t think they will due to internal politics, but it would be understandable if they did.

Israel, btw, has now ceased warning Russia whenever they’re about to airstrike a target in Syria. So the IDF does know which side Russia is on.

I’m also not seeing Poot preventing rump Wagner from selling Pantsirs to the Hezbies. Which has likewise been widely reported.

“Lecturer.” She responded. “I use information that I have learned from my Personal experiences to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality.”

“Well.” She explained. “One popular myth is that African-American men are The most well-endowed of all men, when in fact it is the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait.
Another popular myth is That Frenchmen are the best lovers, when actually it is men of Mexican Descent who are the best.

As I had thought would happen Russia has whipped the Dagestan Nazis with a feather and warned ’em. Warned they are!

Russian security forces re-took control of the airport on the day and about 70 people were arrested. Some were charged with simple hooliganism and received 7-10 days in jail whilst others are facing charges of rioting which is much more serious and can carry long prison terms.

What happened in Dagestan was very bad and an embarrassment to the region but it was dealt with promptly. Contrast with our country and many others where chants of “gas the Jews” and “f*ck Israel” and posters depicting kidnapped Jews being torn down or, the Star of David and the word ‘Juden’ painted on businesses owned by Jewish folk. These matters are effectively ignored by the western police services despite volumes of anti-hate legislation being available.

We (the west) haven’t exactly covered ourselves in glory over the past 3 weeks. So much so that yesterday I purchased, online, a “I stand with Israel” polo shirt that I will wear at every opportunity. I am not a Jew but I think the behavior of many in the west has been utterly shameful. So yeah, what happened in Dagestan was very poor form, but we should be looking in our own backyard.

Missile From Yemen to Israel: Unprecedented Launch, Unprecedented Interception
Haaretz

The Arrow and the concept behind it have been controversial since its inception. While the project’s supporters emphasized the need to defend Israel from a surprise missile attack from the east, including the possibility of a missile armed with a nuclear warhead, and praised the system’s success in tests, its critics argued that it was a waste of billions of dollars on a threat that would perhaps never materialize.

Luckily, someone in Israel sniffed the wind correctly:

“The successful interception is about much more than protecting the residents of Eilat and dealing a blow to the Houthis’ boastfulness,” an Israeli defense official said. “Primarily, it proves to Iran, which was behind the launch and supplied the missile, that Israel has the ability to act against its missile program, and this has much broader implications for the regional conflict.”

Dagestani officials claimed they would punish those who participate in and organize alleged future demonstrations, in contrast to calls for leniency for those participating in the October 29 antisemitic riots. The office of the Mayor of Makhachkala called on local residents to refrain from participating in unauthorized rallies, including one allegedly planned for November 5, and preemptively threatened that participants and “those who provoke the population” will face “serious consequences.” Russian milbloggers similarly claimed that Telegram channels continue to call on Dagestani residents to attend a November 5 demonstration to demand the release of those detained for the October 29 antisemitic riots. A Russian milblogger continued to criticize the weak official response to the recent riots, stating that “to have mercy means to show weakness.”

Interesting too, to compare hamas and Israeli propaganda.
Hamas’s ‘slick’ videos never have follow through of destroyed vehicles and dead soldiers.
Israel has the leisure, for want of a better word, to show pictures of dead terrorists in civvies but wearing military vests.
Israel have control of the ground, the air, the water and have proper military vehicles.
Hamas have cars, ambulances, tunnels, rubble and fewer and fewer human shields.
Perhaps many will melt away into the civilian population to fight another day.
I hope Israeli has DNA evidence and does a complete sampling of the population of Gaza to root out at least some of the war criminals.

Cassie, not only did I serve in the ADF for a while but I’ve read a lot of military history, wargamed for forty years and read a vast amount about MENA current affairs.

Perhaps I do know a tiny bit about the subject. The Iranians and the IDF play a game – the IDF tried to prevent the Iranian foreign minister from landing recently. He had goodies with him. Thhe flight then landed in Baghdad and I suspect they had a long drive across the desert.

But think what you want. I always value your comments. I agree entirely about Met plod and NSW plod. So yes by contrast at least the Dagestanis did something, which is better than nothing at all.

Australia’s Great Statesman steering China in the right direction:

Albanese advises China to play fair on trade

Anthony Albanese said China has a duty to itself and the region to practise free and fair trade, and expressed confidence Beijing’s remaining sanctions on Australian exports will be lifted as a result of the historic visit.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang reaffirmed Beijing would pursue ascension to the 12-member, regional free trade pact, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Premier Li said China “will always stand on the right side of history” and would “resolutely oppose” unilateralism and protectionism.

Beijing would “firmly uphold” the authority and effectiveness of the multilateral trading system.

But the other members of the CPTPP, including Australia and Japan, oppose China’s entry until it actually does abide by the rules-based order for trade.

Technical Note to Emperor Xi: Jinping, mate, maaate; all it takes is lobsters. You want to get into the CPTPP, right? Just promise to buy some fkn lobsters from the little git – and he’ll be yours.

Five more United Nations employees have been killed in Gaza over the past 48 hours, according to the main UN agency in the besieged territory.

And there’s another question.
With 48% unemployment how does one get a job with the United Nations.
Could it be ‘jobs for the boys’?
Are United Nations employment and hamas membership mutually exclusive?
Also saw a short cartoon based on an actual interview with a female Fatah supporter who qualified as a pharmacist presumably before 2006.
Could not get a job, tried opening a private pharmacy but between special high wholesale prices for non hamas and almost daily visits from hamas goons who would destroy stock with false claims of expiry or not approved she had to close and stay home.

It’s pretty interesting if people oppose Zionism but support amongst other things, such as Pan Arab nationalism, any form of revanchist nationalism, a Catholic and united Ireland, Tibet as a concept and other states linked to an older culture intertwined with religion (India, Japan but so much of the world really), including Russia or the USA – or even Aboriginal or Amerindian homelands.

If you can also skewer the “Israel stole our land” meme, then the anti Israeli stuff has no basis.

Ironically destroying Hamas and even Gaza as a quasi state might be a necessary condition for a hitherto imminent actual (West Bank) Palestinian State.

In Hands in Your Pocket news:

A 200-metre tower could be part of SunCable proposal for $2 billion manufacturing plant in Tasmania

Back in May Cannon-Brookes claimed control of the controversial project and now Tasmania has been named as a preferred site for its advanced cable manufacturing facility.

On its website, SunCable said it had been working with jurisdictions across Southeast Asia and Australia over the past two years, assessing potential sites.

“As part of this process we are progressing detailed studies and due diligence on a potential site at Bell Bay, Tasmania.

“This strategic move supports Australia’s renewable energy ambitions, with construction potentially starting in 2025 and cable production by 2029.”

Like. Wow, man.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the state had “fended off” 30 locations around the world to be chosen as the preferred site.

“A $2 billion capital investment and some $350 million injected into the economy annually… 800 jobs in construction and 400 in operation”, Mr Rockliff said

“So this is a huge opportunity not only for northern Tasmania but for all of Tasmania”.

SunCable’s criteria for a cable plant site included land and infrastructure near a deep port with access to renewable power and transport, an established industry base with a skilled workforce and local supply chain and community input to help inform decision making.

‘Community input’: a brave new term for land-gifts and baskets of OPM.

In bird news (the feathered kind) – early this morning a blackbird, male, parked himself on a branch above where I was sitting and launched into a remarkable series of imitations.

A few cockies flew overhead, shrieking, and he promptly emitted a few shrieks of his own. Then a crow, and he dutifully caw-cawed in reply.

Then he began to do some avant garde stuff, like the sound of a dial tone on a landline, and I think a power tool of some sort.

It really was extraordinary – this guy was a virtuoso.

The Greenfilth are at it again. Despicable beyond description.

From the Oz.

The Greens have walked out of Senate question time in protest of the Albanese government’s “heartless, gutless, powerless” response to the Middle East conflict, with senator Mehreen Faruqi yelling “free Palestine”.

“The Coalition is morally bankrupt when it comes to Palestine and Labor has shown itself to be heartless, gutless, powerless. You are watching the massacre of 1000s of Palestinians by Israel and you are not condemning Israel,” the Greens deputy leader said.

“You refuse to call for an immediate ceasefire. We are not going to sit here and watch you pat yourself on the back for doing nothing. Weasel words are not going to stop war crimes. Today, we bring the people’s protest into parliament. Free, free Palestine.”

Senator Faruqi raised her fist in protest and left the chamber, followed by her colleagues.

Trade Minister Don Farrell, who is representing Anthony Albanese in the upper house on Monday with Senate leader Penny Wong in Beijing, said innocent civilians should not pay for the horrors perpetrated by Hamas.

“It also matters for Israel’s own security, which faces grave risk if this conflict spreads, and I think we’ve already seen over the weekend the potential that it’s spreading in the north and in the east,” Senator Farrell said.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire and human suffering is widespread. And the Australian government has consistently called for the protection of civilian lives.”

I’d say don’t be mean now (is it really necessary?) but I’m pretty sure the meteorology guy wished death on me for being (finally) coerced into being vaccinated with Novavax. I lost a promotion out of this utter BS so anyone like that can eat crud.

Always remember the number of unwilling jabees exceeded both the normal, willing guinea pigs, the over eager goofballs, the guys willing to take 50 jabs for cash (RIP), the principled NO types and the sov – cit loonies (more likely to be spooks than cookers).

My gleeful bullying would be confined to winning a series of “small” 10k bets for sterling silver coin – 1: Australia will not have a population decline by Feb 1 2026 and 2: Trump will not be President by Feb 1 2023.

“Why would I take that bet, you’d already be dead from Novavaxxxxxxx you unfair bully of the working men with 750k of super each, I tells ya!”

The other day, he suggested that the 1,000 Mules movie proved beyond any doubt that the election was stolen because there were people stuffing drop-off boxes with ballots. While they could very well have been, he neglected to mention that in half the US states, it’s perfectly legal for people to drop off multiple ballots. Of course, we can assume that skullduggery occurred, but whether it can be proven is entirely different.

I’ve only seen 1/2 of 1000 Mules or 500 Mules but the best example of cheating was the 4 swing states which finished up counting on some phony pretext on the election night with Trump strongly ahead and when they opened again next morning he was behind.

Trump likely won the popular and EC vote in 2016 AND 2020; the myth about 99% or 95% of blacks/La Raza voting Democrat probably has been for a long time, electoral fraud.

I’m sure, but there’s a distinction between someone outright ballot stuffing and others collecting and then putting those ballots in a drop box. As I said, it was legal in half the states (and still is) for someone to do the latter. There was no solid proof by the vids shown in that movie they were committing fraud. Brucey reckoned it was unquestionable proof. It wasn’t.

Of course they cheated in 2020 and by not enough in 2016. However, the Mule movie was not definitive proof they did so.

It’s becoming clearer now, that they used several methods to cheat.

“In the War of attrition that Russia is winning, Putin will take the whole of eastern Ukraine up to the Dnieper River and leave the western Ukraine to be supported and paid for by the EU and NATO. Job done and the UKR then neutralised. All IMHO of course.”

Good grief Johnny, one simply cannot communicate such ideas!

Uncle Sam is now starting to press ‘elensky, rather aggressively, for talks with the Muscovites. Problem is, if he does, those Na….., Azov chaps, will not be best pleased.
As Ukraine is obviously winning, this action by the US is clearly to protect the poor floundering Ivans. Isn’t that nice?

In other bad news, (for the clown puppet), from Camelot on the Dnieper, the head of Ukraine Special Forces was recently sacked. As the only person with the authority to do such an act, (Chief of Ukraine Defence Forces), Gen Zaluhzny received a visit from this chap, who asked him, ….”wtf?!!”
Zaluhzny replied with “WTF, I know nothing about this!??”

Evidently, ‘elensky is starting to catch on, that those goons around him, are not there to protect him, but are awaiting a “go” order. So, he wants new chaps around him.

The Minister for Defence, evidently issued the DCM to the General, without authorisation.
I think this situation, in political parlance, is called, ….., civil war.
Soon, the engravers and sign painters will be called upon for some new bosses, to fill the “upcoming” vacancies.
I’ll back Zaluhzny, because he has the most weapons at his disposal.
In the wings, ……, the new President, ……, Arestovich!

I can’t recall insisting it Cassie, but yes they seem to be about 60:40 Shia and Sunni. Which is not unexpected since they border Iran. Apology if I was wrong, I will try not to be in the future. On the other hand they did just ethnically cleanse Nagoro-Karabakh of Christian Armenians. So I suppose it doesn’t really matter what variety of muslims they are.

True, priest holes were constructed for Catholic priests. Minister holes were constructed for Anglican ministers. There is a technical difference, although I suspect the holes were interchangeable as monarchs came and went. You should read up on Bloody Mary. She was a feisty and quite firey lady.

Anthony Albanese’s approval ratings have fallen sharply in the wake of the referendum defeat and the decline in living standards as the political contest between Labor and the Coalition narrows to the closest margin since the 2022 election.

It’s a peculiar form of political osmosis where it takes some time for the miasma of discontent to penetrate the Canberra bubble, but penetrate it it will despite the efforts of the political class to firm up the barriers.

“Psychiatry has been curing imaginary diseases ever since Freud first found his Id.

Oh, yeah.

The history of psychiatry is probably the least impressive branch of medicine.

That is why it was so easily attacked by people like Szasz and Laing.

It has been all over the place since Day 1. Freudians vs Jungians, lobotomies, shock treatment, all kinds of drugs – sorry, it’s a mess.

Just look at the history of the DSM (the US manual) which has created and erased ‘diagnoses’ and ‘symptoms’ and ‘treatments’ according to prevailing fashion over many decades.

I’m not saying that all pyschiatrists are useless. But, having helped to organise a conference of mainly psychiatrists, and getting to know several of them, and watching their presentations, my conclusion is that they are brainiacs who usually have no more to offer than a good priest/rabbi. counsellor or friend. Indeed, after at least ten years at university (after 13 years at school), they were about as detached from real life as it is possible to be.

People who are seriously mentally ill are a tiny minority, and delving into their relationship with Mother or with the zeitgeist is not useful. The vast, vast majority of psychiatric patients are rich people who, in previous eras, consulted their astrologers and psychics, if their priest/rabbi didn’t give the right answer.

The Greens have walked out of Senate question time in protest of the Albanese government’s “heartless, gutless, powerless” response to the Middle East conflict, with Senator Mehreen Faruqi yelling “free Palestine”.

Trade Minister Don Farrell, who is representing Anthony Albanese in the upper house on Monday with Senate leader Penny Wong in Beijing, said innocent civilians should not pay for the horrors perpetrated by Hamas. “The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire and human suffering is widespread. And the Australian government has consistently called for the protection of civilian lives.”

Pointless symbolism by the Greens but then…….

As for Don Farrell, he is being simplistic because he knows (or should) that Israel has a obligation to minimise the injury or death of innocent civilians in its pursuit of a proportional response to the Hamas threat. However, that obligation to not willfully or carelessly cause excessive civilian casualties does not negate or diminish Israel’s entitlement to eliminate the threat Hamas may pose ‘today’, but also the threat Hamas may pose in the future.

Thus, Israel cannot nuke Gaza because that isn’t proportional to the actual threat (now or in the likely future) posed by Hamas to the Israeli State and, the civilian losses would be grossly beyond unfortunate collateral.

Rubbish.
Priest holes were almost all constructed by Nicholas Owen in the homes of old Catholics who didn’t turn Anglican after death of Elizabeth and start hiding Anglican ministers.
There is zero evidence of Anglican priest holes, nor has anyone in the UK claimed they existed. In fact there’s no evidence of puritan persecution other than to rid the church of England of any Catholic influence.
