I haven’t cleared customs in a first world country in nearly 20 years and that was the US which was fairly uneventful. Front up to counter passport., stamp that was about it apart from what are you here for & how long are you staying small talk.

Recently though on my last transit through Singapore even they are pushing the automated process. Same Bangkok. Even in Aus I still line up for the old school check through. Old habits die hard and I still prefer the personalised service like the welcome back home I got from the customs agent on my last trip in through Melbourne in January.

Schiphol airport, terrible memories I’ve told here from the days of the 1991 Bush Ultimatum. Never forgotten inhumanity by KLM towards parents with two young children (us) and two old ladies, all struggling with luggage at 2am after returned from attempting to transit Southern Saudi Arabia when Desert Storm was unleashed.

Recent flight memories too of transiting in ropey Bus Class in late October this year with Royal Jordanian in a broken-down old crate of a pre-loved plane along the border of Israel and Jordan, one eye open for rogue rockets, the other on the seat-bet sign during rogue turbulance, and the failed latched pilots’ door flying open on, thankfully, landing in Jordan’s Oman airport. Better flight from Royal Jordanian on the Dreamliner trip from Oman to Thailand; Royal Crown on the nifty BC cabin comfort bag, keeping that one, and lovely bedding for visiting dreamland.

Tucked up in the Rydges feather bed by midnight. ?

My first entry to Thailand was through Don Mueang Airport, I remember walking down the stairs to the baggage claim after clearing customs and on the wall of the arrivals hall was written, The penalty for trafficking drugs in Thailand is death.

The Prison I mentioned today when in KL had murals with nooses painted on the walls stating exactly the same for Malaysia.

My last trip to Singapore where I cleared customs was just before COVID, I still have the stub off my arrivals card that has exactly the same warning bolded in capital and red for Singapore. I actually saw a lady screaming and pleading for help with 6 SG border guards carrying her through Changi’s check in hall the night Qantas grounded it’s aircraft because I’d say was she was caught with drugs.

People may not agree with their approach but Asian countries are very open on the consequences of being a drug mule. Trifle with at own risk.
