Scrap the they didn’t manage to steal my credit card. She had another go and it’s gone. Tried to take out €1000 exactly at a brasserie but CBA blocked it. Got a few atm withdrawals I think don’t know how without my pin number. Can’t even buy a bus ticket here without a credit card. Now waiting til CBA have finished overnight maintenance to come up with a solution to get access to some of my money. I think I have enough cash to pay train fares to Paris but that’s about it.
Still only time I’ve been robbed not bad after so many trips.
A poor couple of Chinese tourists, might even have been Australian citizens came into the police station at the same time. They’d had the lot stolen, passports credit cards, driver’s licenses and €4000 cash.
I felt really bad for them.

Herald Sun Shannon Deery:

Opposition Leader John Pesutto could face a challenge for the leadership at the next Liberal party room meeting on Tuesday.

Multiple sources confirmed Liberal MPs were on Friday night planning to hit the phones over the weekend to determine if a challenge would succeed.

If the numbers stack up, a spill motion to oust Mr Pesutto could be moved when the party meets ahead of the parliamentary sitting week on Tuesday.

“It’s a possibility at this stage, but he could, absolutely (face a spill),” one Liberal MP said.

Another senior Liberal said: “It could be a busy weekend.” one senior figure told the Saturday Herald Sun.

“It’s a possibility at this stage, but he could, absolutely,” another Liberal MP said.

New MP Sam Groth, and fellow shadow Cabinet members Brad Battin and Brad Rowswell are all considered as viable replacements for the top job.

MPs have been counting the numbers for weeks, with most believing a spill motion to oust Mr Pesutto would get the numbers needed to succeed.

However opinion is divided over who best to takeover, with concern among some about Mr Groth’s credentials given he has only been in the job since the 2022 general election.

Not filled with a great degree of confidence. What’s another 3 terms in opposition? Good Lord.

If the numbers stack up, a spill motion to oust Mr Pesutto could be moved when the party meets ahead of the parliamentary sitting week on Tuesday.

They could show contrition for their failure to offer a credible opposition and also signal a true change of direction by extending an olive branch to Moira Deeming.

She may or may not accept – they still have to earn trust and Moira will have moved on – but it would be a start.

my posts are disappearing into moderation before eventually being displayed.

I find my comments, when posted, appear at the top of the page rather than at the bottom where I expect them. They move to the bottom when the page refreshes.

You would have posted the comment and it gone to the top. When you put in the next comment the previously posted one would then appear at the bottom and the new one gone to the top.

Might that be what you are taking as being put in moderation?

Tastes like chicken.

Let them eat–snake?! Python farming could offer one of the most sustainable sources of meat in the world – ‘Much less carbon intensive’ (14 Mar)

Farmed python meat may offer a more sustainable alternative to other farmed meat because they can reproduce rapidly, even when food is not abundantly available, according to a study published in Scientific Reports on Thursday.

“Pythons can feel pain and fear, and they don’t want to be slaughtered any more than a cow, pig, chicken, or dog does,” Danielle Katz, PETA senior director of campaigns, told ABC News in a statement. “Experts agree that vegan eating is crucial for stopping the climate catastrophe in its tracks, so adding more animals to the already billions who suffer and die for food every year would be as misguided as it is cruel.”

Well it’s an improvement on bugs, but these people are still bonkers. On the other hand Burmese pythons are so large they could easily eat something the size of a PETA activist, so there’s that.

Three interesting speeches/interviews over the last two days.

Firstly, that vile piece of sh*t Schumer in the US. Why now, I wonder.

Secondly, the train wreck of an interview by “Jupiter” himself, the President of France. If he vacillated any more strongly, the chair would have collapsed.
Without doubt however, the most powerful address was given by Kaja Kallas, the PM of Estonia.
She warned Russia, that she had NOT ruled out sending Estonian troops and weapons to Ukraine.
No doubt, that sent the bureaucrats scuttling all over the Kremlin.

You will recall that Kallas, last year, offered ten F-16’s to Ukraine. This statement was quickly followed up with, “Estonia doesn’t have any F-16’s, but, ….., if we did, we would send ten.”
What a bitch, ……, only offering ten imaginary F-16’s.
Why not a thousand, or ten thousand imaginary F-16’s.

That was about the time, when her husband’s company, was found to be dealing with the Russians, thus breaking Estonia’s own sanctions.
Clownshow!

Chatted yesterday with a bloke I work with. A Saffie whose sister was on a kibbutz on Oct7. She lived there 30 years , her life and family are there. He told me about the trauma they suffered , the family, over the loss of 2 teen kids. The horror of their deaths, which we didn’t go into in detail.

The takeaway from that conversation was how very careful he was discussing it initially and acknowledging the fate of Gazan’s with the IDF pounding them – he wasn’t sure which side I was on until I told him. He has obviously been intimidated by all the Pro Pali propaganda and not freely talking about the conflict.So I told him;

” Mate, I lived in the ME for over a decade. Moslems have been at this barbarism for over 1500 years. IMO, the IDF shouldn’t stop until they do the job FULLY. Preferably leaving behind nothing but a vacant lot.”

Dover – Whatever you do don’t put up any paintings of the English countryside!

British museum warns that paintings of the countryside can evoke “dark, nationalist feelings” (15 Mar)

The Fitzwilliam Museum has suggested that paintings of the British countryside evoke dark “nationalist feelings”.

The museum, owned by the University of Cambridge, has undertaken an overhaul of its displays, in a move that its director insisted was not “woke”…

The new signage states that pictures of “rolling English hills” can stir feelings of “pride towards a homeland”.

However, in a gallery displaying a bucolic work by Constable, visitors are informed that “there is a darker side” to the “nationalist feeling” evoked by images of the British countryside.

There you go, looking at a painted landscape can turn you into a Nazi.

It is a grave mistake, then, to regard woke fanaticism as mere over-exuberance and to treat its excesses with kid gloves. Woke rioting, looting, vandalism, roadway obstruction and other forms of lawlessness must be met with police tactics and prison sentences harsh enough decisively to suppress them. This should be done with no greater severity than is necessary, but also with no less severity than is necessary.

More companies cautiously walking back from the green precipice.

Shell waters down emissions cut pledge despite crucial climate decade (15 Mar)

The energy company Shell has watered down a key green target as it prepares to defy climate experts by growing its liquified natural gas business and holding its oil production steady until 2030.

Accelerating the electric vehicle doom loop (15 Mar)

I’ve been writing about electric vehicles since 2011. EV cheerleading never stops. They’re inevitable! We’ll have 500,000 chargers coast to coast any minute now (the federal government has built approximately two)! By 2030, 50% — or more — of all vehicles on the road will be EVs! EVs will save the planet! Ve haf vays to make you buy EVs! And eat bugs! Don’t forget about the bugs!

Real reality is, of course, different than Mummified Meat Puppet Administration reality. In real reality, Americans have rejected EVs. GM is “postponing” EV production, Ford has cut future production in half, America soon will have about 50% fewer Buick dealers, bought out because they refused to sell EVs, and Hertz is dramatically reducing its EV fleet. Americans wisely won’t rent them.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Davos WEF weenies do. They must be getting very frustrated with us proles not buying into their kooky religion.

Fat Fani and fatter bragg in trouble.

Alan Dershowitz predicted that Fanny would not be booted – the judge presiding over her hearing, when it was announced that there was now a progressive challenging for the judgeship for which he himself was re-running, announced that his decision had been written before the progressive challenger was announced and that he was not going to be changing his opinion.

The Dersh interpreted that as meaning that the judge wanted to convince his conservative supporters (he apparently leans conservative and relies on their support) that he was not swayed in his decision by political concerns – which he would only need declare if his decision was going to be something conservatives would not like.

I’m learning this new upside-down WordPress commenting software as we go.

If you scroll down the right margin, hidden icons appear. If you click on one of them (the wheel symbol), it gives you an option to “manage” a comment you’ve already posted. That means CHANGE a comment you’ve already posted, opening a Pandora’s floodgate of worms.

Onwards to the brave new world!

Masters of the Air was a good series, but not great when compared to Pacific or BoB IMO.

The aerial combat sequences were way too short and could have done with much more intensity- as it was at the time. They went light on the carnage of the early years over Germany I thought. They could have put more into the music theme- Pacific especially was haunting (Zimmer). But still, a wonderful series for sure.

Ramadan ceasefire calls ignore the truth about Hamas in Gaza
Gemma Tognini
MARCH 16, 2024

One of the most famous lines in recent cinematic history belongs to a (then) youthful Tom Cruise in the blockbuster flick A Few Good Men. Cruise plays a hot-shot young navy lawyer with thinly veiled daddy issues, and in the film’s most famous scene he has a perfectly wicked Jack Nicholson on the stand in a tense courtroom showdown.

Nicholson plays a decorated US marine colonel who secretly has gone rogue, and Cruise is trying to goad him into confessing to murder. Nicholson is, of course, brilliant, channelling hints of Randle McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as he stares down Cruise’s impassioned demands for the truth. You can’t handle the truth, he bellows in return. And thus a legend was born.
This was a work of fiction but we are living it today, this aversion to the truth. Australia collectively is incapable of facing up to so many of the things challenging who we are and the values we’ve built across generations, the values hewn from the blood, sweat and tears of Australians from all backgrounds, creeds and faiths.

We may not be able to handle it, but believe me when I say Australia needs a headfirst encounter with the truth.
There is no greater example than the war against Hamas, which I might point out is a war against terrorism that the global community is happy for Israel to fight alone
As this awful, necessary conflict continues, as the Israel Defence Forces edge closer to the goal of wiping out Hamas, there have been repeated calls for a ceasefire because of the start of Ramadan, which began this week.

As the Muslim holy month began, Australians, both notable and beautifully including the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, wished our Muslim community Ramadan Mubarak. This represents the Australia we want to be part of, truly tolerant in the face of significant differences

However, the calls for a ceasefire because of Ramadan ignore important truths. Let me lay them out for you. Hamas broke the ceasefire and started this war on the Sabbath, the Jewish holy day. Not only was it the Sabbath but the violent orgy of murder, rape and mutilation was carried out on Simchat Torah, a time of Jewish celebration to mark the completion, and the restart, of the annual cycle of reading the Torah.

Another truth, courtesy of 1973: the Yom Kippur war was started on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Day in, day out, every month of every year since, rockets have been fired at Israel and its citizens on any and every single day, especially on the Sabbath. Israel’s enemies know many soldiers will be in synagogue.

What I’ve just shared isn’t my opinion. It is the truth that Hamas started the war last year on Simchat Torah and the Sabbath. It is the truth that the Yom Kippur war was started on Israel’s holiest day. It is truth any ceasefire without surrender is simply an opportunity for Hamas to regroup and do what it says it will – repeat October 7, not only in Israel but in all Western countries. It has promised it; we best believe Hamas means it.

This is the awful truth, and millions of Gazans are suffering because Hamas continues to knock back every ceasefire deal put on the table. This is the truth.

So many Australians, especially in the progressive left, simply can’t handle it. They continue to deny the cancerous culture of anti-Semitism that has been laid bare in this country since October 7. They deny. They deflect. They gaslight anyone who dares call it out. They follow any conversation around the brutality of Hamas’s use of sexual violence with the word “but”.
Ah, the truth is hard, the truth hurts. There’s a reason that’s a cliche and that’s because it’s true. Psychologists have studied a phenomenon called the backfire effect, a term to describe what happens when someone presented with irrefutable truths on a matter that should shift their thinking instead doubles down.

Gregg Ten Elshof is a professor of philosophy at Biola University in the US. In 2009 he wrote a book called I Told Me So, in which he unpicks humanity’s seemingly unmatched capacity for self-deception. Ten Elshoff unravels, with excruciating accuracy, what happens when finding the truth becomes the secondary motivation for asking questions. It turns out humans are masters in the art of embracing denial when it suits us.

So, in the Australian context, what is the primary goal? Is it electoral? Is it fear of being wrong, is it the pain of having to look at your ideology and accept it’s flawed?
Beyond the war in Gaza, there are many examples of what I’m talking about, few as striking as the treatment of gender dysphoria in children.

This past week in Britain, the National Health Service announced that puberty blockers would no longer be prescribed to anyone under 18. This follows the damning scandal and subsequent closure of that country’s Tavistock gender identity clinic and a growing bank of evidence on the danger of these treatments more broadly, which includes links between transgender hormone therapy and cancer.
This is truth. Australia? Still stuck on the fence. Clinging to the idea that gender-affirming care is the only valid approach.
The British decision is based on truth, based on science. Finally, the truth in this space is being accepted but here in Australia so many still hold that children who the law recognises are too young, too emotionally (and in all other ways) vulnerable to consent to sexual relationships, can decide to take life-altering medication from which there is no return.

So many other issues. Our energy mix and reckless refusal to consider anything other than renewables. The plight of Indigenous Australians who live in places that are out of sight, hence out of mind.

What will it take? This question runs laps around my mind and my heart daily and this is where I have landed.
We need an encounter with the truth. Australia and Australians need a headfirst, deep-hearted, full-frontal collision with the truth.

Not “my” truth, or his or her truth, the facile indulgence that allows people to construct and reconstruct various matters to suit their own narrative. But the truth.
Most of us in this country do not understand existential threat. We have the luxury of not knowing what it’s like to have to defend our borders or go catch the bus wondering if you’ll be knifed or shot by a terrorist. So many times I’ve said to people, in relation to the Hamas war, what if it were your daughter who had been raped and desecrated? What if it were your son who had his eyes gouged out in front of his children while being forced to listen to the sexual brutalisation of his own wife? Would that be an encounter with truth enough?

We don’t need any more facts. We have scant need for more information. But boy, do we need a collective come to Jesus moment on more than one front, and I pray this happens without a need for first-hand experience.

Let Them Eat Cake, WA eastern suburbs (ie. your western suburbs, easterners) edition:

In Seville Grove, a suburb in Perth’s south-east, a social media post asking whether it is OK to refuse to have a street tree planted by the council on the verge prompted numerous comments against the idea.

“I complained immediately and told them to come remove it or I’d take it out with my car. Was removed within a week and no tree since,” one commenter wrote.

Another resident, who the ABC has agreed not to name, said she removed the tree herself.

“They planted the tree smack bang in the middle of our luscious green grass that my husband worked very hard on to get it lush and green,” she said.

“We took the tree out and put it in our garage.

“A few days later, the council guys came and knocked on our door to ask where the tree was, so we went and got it out of the garage and gave it back to them.”

She said the worker appeared annoyed but no action was taken by the council. She said the trees were an imposition.

“They want to plant all these messy trees like jacarandas and bottle brushes and then expect us to maintain them,” the resident said.

“Also, it reduced the amount of parking we have out the front of our house.”

Okay that sounds reasonable enough. The council should consult residents before whacking a tree on their nature strip – particularly if the resident has been maintaining it. And if they are planting jacarandas, that is definitely a legitimate point of contention. Bloody pains in the arse, those things. And not even native.

But here comes the mayor:

City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield told ABC Radio Perth’s Nadia Mitsopoulos she was aware of the online comments and they had left her shocked.

“It’s embarrassing actually as mayor to be reading those comments and seeing how people are treating our green infrastructure and reacting to our attempts to green the suburbs,” she said.

“It’s disappointing, but we really need to work with residents and that’s what the City of Armadale has been doing.”

She said the city could potentially fine residents for ripping out newly planted trees but would prefer to try to educate people on their benefits first.

“We would prefer to work with those people to understand their concerns and perhaps work with them to get them to accept a tree as an investment for the future,” Ms Butterfield said.

“I really worry about my grandchildren living in a suburb that has no trees and that we cannot walk down the street during the day because it is too hot and the paving is too hot to walk on, dogs can’t go for a walk and we can only walk in the very early morning and at night.

“It’s an awful future that we’re facing if we keep denying local governments the right to put trees in the only space that is available to us, on our verges.”

Headline should have been ‘Mayor to ratepayers: drop dead’.

People just love being insulted by their elected officials, being told they’re embarrassing and uneducated and whatnot. I’m sure Nadia is a shoo-in at the next local govt election and her voters will overlook the fact she seems to believe she is the mayor of the Shire of Peppermint Grove* rather than the City of Armadale**.

*the most elite and exclusive LGA in Perth and arguably Australia – it is the smallest LGA in Oz and consists of a single riverside suburb, Peppermint Grove (funnily enough), which also has an overabundance of tree canopy
** one of the bottom 3 LGAs in Perth, very possibly the bottom, where many (most?) can’t afford to worry about things like the tree canopy along their street

Boeing, going, going………………..

Incidents have plagued Boeing airplanes in the past few weeks: on Monday, a United Airlines Flight heading from Sydney to San Francisco, was forced to turn around mid-flight due to a hydraulic leak. The Boeing 777-300 plane, which was carrying 167 passengers and 16 crew member, landed safely back in Sydney.

Hours earlier, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner en route Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand experienced a technical issue that resulted in injuries to 50 passengers. Then, a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Japan diverted to Los Angeles International Airport on March 7 after a tire on the Boeing 777-20 fell off after takeoff, damaging cars in a parking lot on the ground.
