Westfields, Bondi Junction, 2.30pm 19th April, 2024. Six days after.
Parking is complimentary today, says the sign at the entrance to the car park as I drive in to keep my quite urgent medical appointment in premises at Westfields today. The acreage of underground car parking in this huge complex was mostly empty. My appointment, made last week, was scheduled for Tuesday, then rescheduled for Wednesday, then rescheduled for Thursday, and only permitted now, on Friday. Westfields’ opening had been delayed this week for further forensics and body removal, for the necessary industrial clean-up, and for the shopkeeper’s day of coming to terms with the events of Saturday. Tragedy hung in the air, sombre and still emotionally palpable. People looked around them more than usual, aware of the televised images, still in huddled groups.
It’s school holidays but there were no children, for who would bring their children here yet? No disabled, no infirm aged, no carers. Not many people at all. Shops were generally open, everywhere displaying beautiful fresh white flowers, but some kiosk businesses not in shops were shut, a couple of them wreathed in black cloth. The Information Service offered a condolence form and a pin on black looped ribbon for anyone wanting one to wear, a mourning sign that was reproduced on the official LED signage in the place, which is normally full of Westfield information and marketing.
Disliking lifts when alone, I took the escalators up to the sixth level for my appointment, the shadow image of a man with a bollard on each rise as I stepped off it. On the 4th level by the escalators the names were Dior, Prada, Fendi, Zegna, Ferragamo … and Chanel, where a shuttered shop had a layer of floral tributes at its closed entrance, some of them a simple single flower. This will all change next week I am sure, after Sunday’s remembrance ceremony on Bondi Beach, but today only a hesitant return to anything like normal was possible.
Interesting post, LizzieB, thank you.
Hi Liz, good that you are back from the Great Southern Smorgasboord.
Almost a victim.
Beautifully written. Thank you.
OK, Cats – trying to raise this subject without unnecessarily raising any hackles – chiple jay nooze this morning:
“There are ‘calls’ for the Bondi Junction massacre to be decreed a “terrorist attack”
Why, FFS, what would be the point? We’ve been told repeatedly that the murderer was not motivated by “idiotology”.
He was a Strathfield Plaza type psychopath, set off by something that remains undiscoverable, apart from the bleeding obvious.
The next time you hear gun control imbeciles screeching about banning (cue spookee muzak …) “Gunz!”, then quote them this:
SP: Killer armed with a gun – 7 dead
WBJ: Killer armed with a knife – 6 dead
Neither of the above death counts include the killer, so 8 (suicide) and 7 (shot by a cop).
It’s an interesting comparison, in a rather macabre way.
Thoughts, Cats?
My thought is that the aged, contentious and controversial media – long overdue for compassionate dying – are grief stricken at being cut-off pre-ejaculation by an inability to tie the bloke to anything remotely far-far-extreme-nasty-right. While I haven’t tapped in during the past few days, I didn’t think they managed to effectively nail him even as a misogynist.
Given the questionable, suspect, and disreputable image of the media in Australia, even limited to the past decade, none of those incoherent, integrity-challenged Daleks-in-human-form, should have any opportunity to influence important policy decisions, particularly ones which – presumably – will limit even further the liberty of ordinary, law-abiding taxpayers.
Sew sez Muddy.
Had a (polite) argument with a friend’s wife tonight who opined that thank God he hadn’t had a gun or it would have been soooo much worse.
Me: I’ll take my chances with being shot against being gutted with a blade.
Her: You might survive a knife but one shot and you’re dead.
Me: (The headache goes own you stop banging your head on the table.)
Imagine the outcome if there were law-abiding citizens there who were concealed carrying?
It could have been over before his rampage really got going.
EV Sacrilege: Electric Maserati GranCabrio is an INSULT to the brand | MGUY Australia
Just to further muddy the analysis – the first victim in the SP massacre was a 15 year old school girl who was stabbed.
For my sins, I’ve seen the picture of the poor dead girl (thanks, NSW police) after she was stabbed.
How or why anyone could perpetrate such evil is beyond my comprehension.
Anyone had vertebrae fused? Know we have been trying to avoid it as it was a last resort, well nearly there.
PET scan of my Lumbar spine was naassty. Maybe back in Victoriastan soon. Haven’t had to touch income protection ins but will if this comes to fruition.
On insurance, Tojo up for renewal. 20% increase, so I shopped around. Got 3 reputable quotes that were about 40% cheaper including one from the same company. Rang them, including quote from them 40% cheaper to bargain down premium and best they could do was roll back the 20% increase with a lot of platitudes about good customer etc. We politely declined and instructed that the policy expire naturally. Crudely insurance companies are taking the piss and need reigning in.
Not personally, but a relative did maybe 35 years ago now. Presumably your problem is deterioration (crumbling) of the vertebrae, rather than dislocation? Those lumbar vertebrae hold up a hell of a lot of weight.
Best of luck.
In years past it was rarely successful. A female friend had quite significant back surgery & to this day still suffers back pain. So when a very fit 70plus male friend suddenly had spinal problem radiating pain down his leg & was scheduled for surgery, we were very apprehensive for him. To our great relief the new microsurgery proved very successful & we are mightily relieved. Whether it is modern surgery techniques or a damn good surgeon – I don’t know.
Vicki, quite possibly just good luck on having solid bone to support, rather than crumbly old fart bone.
But yes – surgery just keeps getting better – better techniques, better equipment.
My sister sister who did OT for 30 odd years says the stuff they were doing routinely when she retired was considered ‘bleeding edge surgery’ when she started. Even stuff like heart transplantation is now routine.

Is that a new dish by Gordon Farking Ramsey?
I do not know where these ‘calls’ emanated from, other than the immediate reactions of some on this august journal of record, and other lesser blogs.
The bloke’s own father said a) he was Radio Rental, and b) he had no social skills and couldn’t find a girlfriend which enraged him. This also explains why this nuffer targeted women, and women with children.
Exhibit B in the It Really Is Just A Nuffy and Prospective Mad Rooter file is this, from the Tele. Ms Cee Rodruigez ran the now-defunct brothel, The Flamingo Club:
Then:
And:
Also:
Additionally:
I’m calling it. A frustrated mad rooter, so much so that he seriously considered penis enthusiasm to get his rocks off – but unfortunately, this dude’s complete absence of social skills – like almost every other mass murderer going around, I would add – led to zero companionship, which fuelled his pre-existing nuffery, which led to him murdering women and girls in shopping centres. In short:
‘If I can’t get a root, no other chicks are giving anyone else a root.’
Sometimes it really is that simple.
Hey greenfilth – how much reforestation of this planet’s surface will be enough before we all starve to death, I asks ya?

Um, Rabz, certain personages of which we are aware, painfully and tiresomely upon many many occasions with a thousand different blog names, are mentally off the planet and have a fixation about Red Sea pedestrians. It seems a fairly common feature of psychotic people.
I’ve seen no reporting of the Bondi bladesman in this aspect, but he was a psycho and Westfield Bondi Junction is a bit of a hot spot in such regard.

Oi, I was going to say that.
There is a need for a new conservative party in the US, the current one isn’t and beyond redemption.
KD – both bunkum and couchee fit that description.
Along with the many bizarre conspiracee hypotheses that sprung up last Saturday evening, before the bodies of the victims were even cold:
“He’s obviously a moozley*”
“He’s a rent boy”
“He’s a disgruntled father of a kiddee he’ll never see again”
“He’s furious that Dim Chambers delivered a budget sourpuss”
We may never know the truth, unless it’s lurking under our faces, Cats.
*The closely trimmed beard being a giveaway
OK, so apparently I was completely wrong about the misogyny bit (I don’t regret being unplugged – it’s a mental health thing).
With poor social skills (autism?) and schizophrenia, can we really say that this bloke is representative of ALL other Australian blokes? Is that is what is being intimated?
After the woman in Central Queensland murdered 8 kids, did we hear or read anything about the propensity of women towards mass murder?
Ah, feckit. This sh!te just winds me up.

I know someone, but he was in his early 30s, ruined his back by excessive gym training, would you believe? Weight lifting.
He is a brickie and the op. was quite successful, minor inconvenience in bending over too far.

There will be an awful lot of pressure on Shin Bet to prove their worth.

Is 11 years enough given the crime, cats?
I don’t think so. The killer is now 30. Should have been confined in solitary until 75, at least.
The judge should have put on the black cap, sentenced him to be “taken forth to the place of execution, hanged by the neck until dead, and may God have mercy on your soul,”
Agreed.
You can always rely on teh ALPBC webshite to harsh your Friday night vibe, Cats – should never have blundered onto there … 😕
Johnson was the wrong pick for the Speaker for the simple reason that he was an unknown so nothing to indicate how he would work out. Not surprising then that he jumped to the other side so completely. Next time they should pick Gaetz, a definite conservative.
What are you on about Rabz?
Are they my plebs? Why are they beloved? Who are the plebs and why are they mine? Are you somehow above these plebs – and if so, why?
It can’t be your brilliant insights.
Fair enough, you went full berko-opinion on the Bondi killings last weekend with no information, and then slagged off anyone who said ‘hang on’. Not the first one to do so, and won’t be the last.
However – then you went and described the exact same thing you were saying last week, tonight, as the work of others and as ‘conspiracee theories’.
Mate – put the shrooms down.

Re: back surgery
I have two herniated cervical discs and degenerative lower lumbar spinal arthritis.
My physio is vehemently against surgery as he maintains it will leave me permanently unbalanced and inflexible. He swears that a strict regimen of massage/exercises can alleviate though not cure the problem.
So far, he’s right. Though just to add a bit of spice to the problem, I over lifted, swivelled and stretched my knee and tore the MCL. Bloody painful!
Ta.
Mines all lumbar and only 2 vertebrae that are targeted. Surgeon isn’t keen but I have bulges there on nerves and no cartilage left in my facet joints.
Rest of the back is showing spondylosis for someone who has done a lot of heavy manual labour, we fortunately can deal with that without surgery.
err, KD – I have been trying to extract the urine regarding comments last week, for goodness sake – “KD’s beloved plebs” is a reference to you posting comments about events in the NT which might just be perpetrated by “scrotes” you might just have little sympathy for.
