Cats, the first two decades of this century saw the release of some magnificent tunes and albums.
The first decade featured much electronica and dance music including the many Ministry of Sound compilations which always take me back to long gone legendary venues like Soho in the Cross, which was best attended on a Saturday night/Sunday morning when it was so packed you literally could not move. Hence the need to adjourn to the “Pillhead Room” when not playing pool.
OutKast and Groove Armada were two of my favourites from that decade.
The second decade was a mixed bag, although there were some standouts. Tame Impala did Oz proud with some wonderful psychedelia, while the FIFA soundtracks could always be relied upon to highlight various (mostly unknown) artists’ excellent new tracks.
I’m interested in hearing the favourite songs of Cats from that period of time – which in future we will probably look back upon very fondly.
Some personal favourites, funnily enough, from the middle of last decade:
Enjoy Cats, let’s see some musical memory filled in!
The film clip for “It’s Strange” …
The bass is just out there …
Hacen Falta Dos
Popping in to say hello.
Good golly!
That is not an impala, that’s an ocelot.
And I doubt she’s tame.
Is this that kind of blog now?
Hooray!
Outkast is excellent! Likewise Tame Impala. However I’ll do one from this week since it’s so hilarious.
Ben Shapiro Has the #1 Rap on iTunes. What Alternative World are We Living In? (lefty Medium, 29 Jan)
Lots and lots of head explosions. Here’s his single, it’s not too bad if you like that style:
“Facts” – Tom MacDonald (feat. Ben Shapiro) (27 Jan 2023)
Oops that should be 27 Jan 2024… it’s a new year we’re being in.
Taking me a while to catch up.
Ok one from the start of the century, which I really like, since it has guitars and slide guitar and nothing else much except a bit of synth.
Calexico – Pepita (2003)
First heard it on SBS of all places, so there you go.
Gotan Project – Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)
Cake, for the their sheer brilliance an mixing poetry and rhythm
going the distance
lose yourself
Destiny’s Child – Bootylicious
P!nk – Get The Party Started
Kylie Minogue – Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
All from 2001, which must have been my last gasp attempt to keep up. Night.
Cake – “Short Skirt, Long Jacket“, live 2011?
Tom MacDonald is pretty impressive if you consider what he’s done as an independent artist. Though some of the beats can be repetitious, and the choruses often not so inspiring, he’s pretty out there with the verse content, and has a very loyal following online and a lot of youtubers reacting to him. What I find most of interest are the reactions of many of the African-American youtubers to his content, although some of course seem a little predictable.
Adam Calhoun and Struggle Jennings are kind of – sort of – in the same vein. Upchurch as well, though I haven’t listened to much of his work. Jelly Roll.
Facts with Ben Shapiro is musically pretty ‘blah’ but a massive up-yours troll to the conventional music industry.
White and nerdy
Weird Al, 2006.
That’s about the extent of the contribution I’m able to make to this subject as well.
A worthy story for this thread I think!
“Staggering”: Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Collection has sold at auction for over $11 million – with a record-breaking ’59 Burst sale and 28 guitars fetching over $100K (2 Feb, via Instapundit)
Sorry that Tame Impala did nuthin’ for me, Puberty Blues Video, no gals surfing or rollering. But I can see why you fellas might like it … 🙂
Loved Strange and Pink, thanks for the listen
Now I know its not in the 20’s but I missed that, being in the bush.
This is my favourite at present, makes me laugh when I sing along, cooking in the kitchen.
