Mark Lawson, a versatile writer and fellow traveller with energy realism, has put together a book on the dismantling of the power grid. This grew out of a project to publish the briefing notes of the Energy Realists of Australia in a book. He took up the idea but abandoned the structure of the notes and drew upon them to write a book of his own.
Mark deals in detail with the issue of wind droughts and how an all-renewables network cannot deliver reliable supply. Storage is not an option, despite the silly talk about big batteries.
But for the moment at least, there is no getting rid of the obsession with wind generators and solar power plants on the part of the irresponsible authorities and their urgers. For every person who points to the reality of the situation, there are ten people claiming that such statements are disinformation.
So the best that we can do is to urge politicians to keep fossil fuel in the picture to back up or “firm” the intermittent input from the sun and the wind. This could be done with a massive fleet of gas turbines (at vast expense.) Maybe, just maybe the lights may stay on.
Electricity will be horrifically expensive but there may be just enough of it – with heroic load shedding, aka rolling brownouts – to save the grid from collapsing, which would usher in a new Dark Age:)
It you are worried about this, then move to Tasmania or start hoarding wood and animal dung for the time when home generators are outlawed or we run out of diesel.

Can we, please, cease using the term “fossil fuels”. An alternative is hydrocarbons. You may have a better term. That’s fine, but let’s have done with a term originating with those who wish (probably drastic) energy poverty upon the majority of us.

The elites have to choose between the wars they want to wage and the brave new world of energy poverty they want to impose.

Good news for us. Electric tanks and solar powered jet fighters aren’t a thing. Nor is a renewable industrial base that would be required to produce the means of war an actual possibility.

Regarding the term; “Fossil Fuels”:
a couple of decades ago a small team of actual scientists in a re-emerging Russia looked at the issue.
Whilst it is fairly well accepted that coal is basically hyper-compressed biomass, their assessment is that oil (petrochemicals) is a whole different beast.
Their term for its origins centered around the word, “abiogenesis”, meaning NOT of “biological” origin. Just because both substances ate dark in colour, extracted from the ground and flammable, does NOT immediately and with certainty, mean that they have a common origin.
These inquiring minds came to the conclusion, probably aided by some fine grain spirits, that
petrochemicals / petroleum were formed deep underground in the planet-sized chemical cooker that is the crust / mantle boundary. Furthermore, it is believed that, because this giant “cooker: is still very active, so may well be the production and aggregation of “petroleum” (literally; ROCK OIL)
Whence the “ingredients? The answer to that is found in the entire “Continental drift caper and the process of “subduction” wherein one plate “dives under’ another aupon collision. This does NOT happen overnight, but is has been going on for as long as there have been crustal plates wandering about.
When an oceanic plate takes a dive, it takes with it vast amounts of interesting material. This is all shoved down to great depths and at serious temperatures.
There is a LOT of water dragged down, as well. This is the source of the steam-pressure that can make certain volcanoes so ” interesting”.
Another REALLY wild hypothesis is that the “ingredients for “oil” were part of the “job lot” that was accumulated as the planet was coalescing. A bit of bed-time reading / scrolling, right there.
There is a good reason that geology is regarded by sensible folk as a CORE (so to speak) SCIENCE.

I too am with Texas Jack and are reluctantly and counter-intuitively hoping for Liddell caused blackouts this year so we can have a small disaster now instead of an absolute calamity in say 5 years time. Most of the voting public still isn’t paying this issue any real attention and they won’t until the they personally suffer a black out. I wish we as a society could have the brains to avoid this utterly avoidable disaster but it is clear we can’t.
