JC – The FDA’s most important criteria is whether the company making it is a class-enemy or not.
What Dr. Makary Said About the FDA That Left Fox News Host Stunned (4 Oct)
It’s pretty damning. Ivermectin is of course detested by the Left, and Merck is walking very carefully over broken glass right now to try to get their equivalent certified. It’s a bad thing when the medical establishment is totally controlled by fruitloops, which if the CDC is anything to go by, is how it is right now. The TGA and PGA are just as bad here. It’s insane.
The FDA offers pharma basically the same advantages through new patents as a new drug.
JC
I agree its a great thing if a new an innovative use is found to “reinvent” already existing drugs for conditions they originaly didnt have a use for.
However…
It has led to patent farming, where a drug which is known to have a few applications is instead ‘found” to have a new function not long before its original patent runs out.
(NBC but an easy read)
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/drugmakers-play-patent-game-ward-competitors-n915911
Drug companies typically have less than 10 years of exclusive rights once a drug hits the marketplace. They can extend their monopolies by layering in secondary patents, using tactics critics call โevergreeningโ or โproduct hopping.โ
Lisa Larrimore Ouellette, a patent law expert at Stanford University, said the pharmaceutical industry gets a greater financial return from its patent strategy than any other industry does.
AztraZeneca in 2001 famously fended off generic versions of its blockbuster heartburn medicine Prilosec by patenting a tweaked version of the drug and calling it Nexium. When Abbott Laboratories faced multiple lawsuits over its big moneymaker TriCor, a decades-old cholesterol drug, it lowered the dosage and changed it from a tablet to a capsule to win a new patent.
And Forest Laboratories stopped selling its Alzheimerโs disease drug Namenda in 2014 after reformulating and patenting Namenda XR to be taken once a day instead of twice.
Now you can argue these are improvements, but enough to warrant removing the already established drug and introducing the “new improved” (and extended patented) one?
And yesthe patents system is pretty shit, a better option would be to offer longer patents for discounted drugs giving the companies a 20 year stream of income (at, say a 50% discount) instead of 5-10.
To put it in perspective, Disney has patents which will reach 100 years old still delivering income for them.

Baker/ Vax problem post will come up at 2pm people.
Dover, could I respectfully suggest that the issue raised by Gab at 8:42 am deserves its own thread too. The Bio Security Act 2015 is a piece of Federal legislation which details the (limited) Federal Government’s activities regarding pandemics.
At present, it is very limited and the various state public health orders are much more draconian in comparison. The various state public health orders could be challenged in courts of law as they exceed the scope the limited Federal legislation, and the Federal legislation should take precedence according to our constitution.
No cases have yet been heard in our courts based on the Federal limitations vs. state government health orders, these few cases are quickly and quietly settled out of court. The Federal Government therefore wants to “beef-up” its legislation to legalise state governmental tyrannies, and to add additional powers to the government, including the relocation and detention of “groups” as it sees fit.
This must be stopped, this is no different to the Untermensch being rounded up and relocated to ghettos and camps in the 1930’s.

Um JC, you’re defending patent trolling & really bad lawyering.
They didn’t discover it at all if it was only ever Ivermectin.
My understanding was it (Ivermercktin) is a new drug with virtually the same levels of safety and efficacy as actual Ivermectin.
It’s a con, despite the airs and graces of legitimacy.

Oh my, tee hee, I am blushing now.
Brucie.
I’m not saying if the dude’s view is correct or not, but it’s an opinion and therefore should be backed up with facts.
The point that I’m making is that the provision allowing new patents for re-purposed drugs is an excellent idea.
Some idiots here seem to think that repurposing doesn’t require additional costs to meet new standards, but it most certainly does.
Except that it does the same thing, just not as well and for about a thousand times more money. At least that is what I see. (Admittedly I’m going on the Merck claim of 50% reduction in mortality, as I don’t know what Pfizer is claiming, whereas ivermectin ranges a lot higher than that.)
Itโs a camel rather than a horse, Bruce? ๐
The suppression of ivermectin is criminal behavior but it opened up a huge opportunity to help address the loss from Pfizer’s recent 2.3 billion fine. ?
We don’t know if it does exactly the same thing. As it is a completely different structure that is unlikely.
Dot, I expect better from you. I really do. ๐
Think of a large pharma’s collection of patents as a portfolio of stocks. Some will do better than others and re-purposing gives pharma the opportunity to make lots of money. There are costs involved with repurposing because trials / studies have to demonstrate the old drug actually works for the ailment.
The drug company makes more money on an existing drug. Fucking good for them. Pharma making lots of money means they’re helping people with the illnesses and therefore doing the Lord’s work on earth.
JC – You are conflating evergreening patents and recertifying drugs for off-label uses. They’re not the same thing. The US Pat Office grants patents, the US FDA grants certifications. The latter is the procedurally important requirement. And the FDA is totally controlled by the looney Left, going on the report I linked. The CDC also, based on the other report I linked. It’s all in keeping with Gramsci and the Left’s strategy for the last half century. Why are you surprised? Health is one of the most powerful weapons the Left has to get their way – as we’ve been seeing with this ‘pandemic’.
Brucie
I’m not conflating a single thing. An unchanged drug can be RE-PURPOSED and the FDA will approve it for treatment of another illness.
whoops and I might add.
the FDA will not only approve it, but will also treat it as a new drug , which means it carries patent protection. This is a good thing.
Here is the Veritas film about antibodies vs Pfizer shot mentioned by Dover *and others).
Ivermectin has known protease inhibitory activity, the Pfizer candidate is reported to be a strong protease inhibitor. Ivermectin also is known via binding studies to interfere with the spike protein-ACE2 docking complex.
Just popped up to the shops to buy lunch. As I entered the shopping centre (Bridgepoint) I noticed the shutters down at the IGA.
There were sheets of A4 stuck on the shutter explaining that a person who was in their store on the weekend tested positive for Covid so they were closing the store while they had it ‘cleaned’.
I suppose this is the price of running a business in a society with so many neurotic people. Doesn’t matter what the franchise owner thinks – if the wee steepit, cow’rin, tim’rous beasties* among their patrons think IGA is not panicked enough then they will write letters or refuse to shop there (until they do come back but with haughty condescension, reassuringly swapping assertions that they ‘would not come here if there was another shop’ in the same way ants swap pheromones from the queen’s butt).
And even if the franchisee had the free spirit to brush the Covid alarm off Head Office would probably insist since it can affect the IGA reputation far beyond the Lower North Shore.

Thanks for that intelligent response. I really, really have an issue with intellectual property rights and it’s been swirling around in my head for decades. I sometimes see the advantage of offering what is essentially a monopoly right and I also can see how it’s abusive and wrong and wonder if the world would be better off with no such thing as intellectual property rights or much, much more stringent system.
Keep in mind that its people like Cronkite who has most likely destroyed the system… modern day lawyers.
No JC. As I said the FDA has nothing to do with patent protection whatsoever. I’ve had many patents granted through the US Pat office, I know what I am talking about.
No doubt the US Pat Office will expedite the Pfizer patent application, which is fine by me. But the FDA approves the use of it, and says nothing about monopoly rights to the manufacturing of it. That’s what the patent would be for, although Pfizer wouldn’t need one immediately since they’re well ahead of the competition in the manufacturing method development – which would not be easily duplicated overnight by the Chunks or Indians. Though they could probably do knock offs fairly quickly once they knew the chemical structure,
Oh, OK.
So when is the LNP going to do something about fat chicks?
Chinese Developer Fantasia Misses Bond and Loan Payments
That’s fine Brucie. I’m therefore uncertain what the actual and exact terminology is that the FDA does. However, the upshot is that the drug is newly born to fight another illness and treated as an entirely new drug.
JC – The FDA can help pharma companies with patent evergreening though. Typically evergreening is about a minor change to the method – eg a vaccine which includes a different adjuvant or preservative. There might be a small improvement or even no improvement at all, but if the FDA certifies the new concoction and de-certifies the old method then that prevents generics companies from selling the out-of-patent formulation in competition. Big money in that. Which I suspect is going on widely behind the curtain. Kickbacks for everyone.

That’s correct JC except it is not able to be priced as an entirely new drug, since the patent protects the manufacturing process, not the pharmacological use.
Of course if someone develops a different manufacturing method then they can sell the same compound themselves. But developing such processes isn’t easy. Copying a known process is easy though, which is why the patent system exists.
Btw the Chinese ignore patents (except their own ones) which means as soon as they get the details on the new Pfizer compound they’ll be selling a knock off of it.

Why not immediately sell the “fit for purpose” drug instead of delaying the public good by getting a tweaked product to market 18 months into a world wide epidemic?
Yes, that is a conservative position – complete information and small government allowing people and their doctors to make their own decisions. No governmental intervention through product bans and biased information.
The OAN report India Govt. Declares Most Populated State Officially COVID Free After Widespread Use Of Ivermectin indicates Ivermectin was always “fit for purpose”.

Welcome to 1984!
It’s helpful to look at every Lizard People’s measure taken against BatFlu as sinking free choice, and making government compulsion the answer.
What helps shake off the sniffles? Cardio fitness, diet and vitamin D- so government intervenes to “lockdown”, put a lid on fitness, a speedhump on diet and a shadow on sunlight.
What helps in hospitals? A calm head, flexibility, triage, antivirals- so “the health industry” intervenes to force the hand of GPs, hospitals are declared at breaking point already, workers are told to get jabbed or rack off, and HCQ, IVM et al are vilified if not outright outlawed.
What helps people make choices? Information- so “the media alliance” unites to recycle nebulous scare stories (with very little visuals, tellingly), pollies are shielded form questions, social media locks step with the Marxist Left education-journalism cabal.
What fuels public entrepreneurship, and the whole damn economy? Private citizens. So the government ruins small business, stops travel, raises compliance, greases up “contactless” eftpos payment, and will soon introduce a social license system.
So the communist in The Vatican, Pope Frank, and Pol Dot are so concerned for humanity that they both agree to send the world back to the stone age???
You’d go well in Kabul right now because the lights will be going out… oh wait … The Pope and Pol Dot are going to pay Afghanistan’s electricity bill???

Ellen – Thanks for that, I was wrong. On the other hand taking a patent out to use asprin for Covid (which Israelis found promising) would be a waste of time since it is available in the shops. Trying to sell the same thing for two very different prices is going to be hard to make work in practice.
And we’re competing against the world leaders in corruption. But it’s good that it’s so obvious now.
Apologies to the Pythons.

And the Chemists did feast upon the Ivermectin, and Molnupiravir, and Siniovax, and Pfeizer, and Sputnik, and Moderna, and AstraZeneca, and never ending Booster shots. And the Faluci spake, saying, ‘First shalt thou take out the Holy syringe. Then shalt thou jab to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt jab, and the number of the jabbing shall be three. Four shalt thou not jab (yet), neither jab thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is …. soon to be recommended. Once jab number three, being the third vaccination, be reached, then lobbyest thou thy Faluci deaths prediction of Cambridge towards thy politician, who, being a headless chicken in My sight, shall buy it.’

EVs get a bad wrap from their own maker. A recent GM bulletin said:
Not to park your Chevy Bolt within 50 feet of other vehicles in case it catches fire.
Highly recommends that Bolt EV owners not to park within 50 feet of anything you care about.
Recommends parking on the top floor or on an open-air deck and park 50 feet or more away from another vehicle.
Requests Bolt EV owners to not leave their vehicle charging unattended, even if they are using a charging station in a parking deck.
(h/t instapundit) I don’t think EV owners will be taking their car to the local shopping mall at peak times.
They have discovered a new use for an old drug and thatโs good too. In fact itโs great and thatโs the reason why they ought to be paid handsomely for it.
They discovered nothing head prefect. Guys like professor Borody realised ivermectin’s anti-viral worth against the chunk virus. What Pfizer has done is tinker with the structure of ivermectin so it satisfies the criteria for a new drug while its effect is essentially the same as the old ivermectin’s.
Since you’re just a stock jockey I wouldn’t expect you to understand this chicanery.
The punishment should be – annulment of all patents and copyrights belonging to the companies that are pushing the jab.

Let’s ,for the sake of argument have you living in Texas, owning land and working as a farmer. Let’s use Texas as an example for this analogy as you can claim mineral rights. You allow a prospector to examine your land and he’s he’s strikes oil. Massively! You, Jed Clamplett are now an oil tycoon as the land has gone up from say $US2,000 bucks and acre to $US200,000 an acre.
Did you, Cronkite, discover the oil? Why no, you didn’t. In fact you didn’t even have the idea of looking for oil because an oil prospector came knocking on your door. All you had was the land!
Same with the pharma companies. It’s their fucking property right and therefore have the right to exploit the re-purpose. Stiff cheddar.

Why do police seem to target low-income communities?
Barrister, lecturer and legal writer Greg Barns SC explains the tendency for police forces to over-police low-income areas.
He believes it is a convenient and soft target for police forces to flex their muscles because wealthy areas are both financially resourced and legally and politically connected to fight back.

I went to my usual cafe to get the morning dope and a few paces up from the store there were three cops buying coffee from the other cafe next door. It wasn’t as crowded as normal because it was a cold , awful morning in Melbourne today.
I got a bit of a nervous laugh from the audience when I asked the cops if the were just back from Afghanistan with all the combat gear they had on them.
Not even a reply this time. You normally get smartarse comment back from these arseholes.

News Corp providing quality journalism again:
“The number of Covid-19 cases from the ugly protest at Melbourneโs CFMEU head office has climbed to seven and spread to dozens of children, including two babies, the union says.
The CFMEU on Tuesday said the seven were staff members at the union headquarters who had then gone on to spread the virus to family members.”
It didn’t seem to occur to the “journalist” to ask why, if the seven cases were all as a result of the protest, all seven were among CFMEU staff and none from among the protesters.
An alternative explanation would be that CFMEU HQ was the source, and the protest was an inconsequential coincidence.
But the report just dutifully recites the Current Truth according to “the union” (i.e. Setka’s apparatchniks).
To be serious though, it was easy to go like a cloud of bees at Barnabyโs stupid and revealing comment. All he did was confirm what we all had suspected for a long time.

Greg Barnes is a educated spastic.
Im going to use the feraldton Aboriginal sub class (Ie: the criminal element of that group, not the “normal” ones)
My ex police friend indicates somewhere north of 80% of police time is taken up by that demographic.
Most of the time there are events in progress, witnesses, footage or other forensic evidence (fingerprints etc) which point out broadly who they are looking for.
Its relatively “easy”policing which has a great impact on everyones quality of life, the offences are simple, the ability to lay charges generally uncomplicated and resources needed to have an impact relatively low.
In addition the incidence of repeat offenders is massive, a turd at 13 will probably continue being a turd till they die… not always but often.
Police work where the bulk of their crime comes from.
And I cant overstate just how shit the criminal element of the underclass can make it on the people living nearby, often other lower income types.
A rich kid on stealing charges takes the same resources to process and take to court.
A rich kid on a DV charge is very likely to be treated pretty much the same as Billy Bongsmoke.
Where wealth makes a massive difference is in the white collar crimes, which take far, far more resources to prosecute and often pit a force lawyer/prosecutor against some very sharp legal minds.
TL/DR: Greg Barnes is a moron, or hes a shitweasel looking for political office and trying to paint himself as a caring lefty.
I knew a couple of the more infamous ones when I was growing up.
One in particular was a raving queen.
My theory goes like this …
They grew up in ultra-conservative religious households (and society in general) in the ’50’s and ’60’s.
There was no way they were coming out as gay.
Joining religious orders seemed like a good idea.
Sexual urges fought and suppressed during their teens and twenties, and they had no experience at developing an adult relationship.
So it finally erupted as child abuse.
Not excusing it in any way.
Just an explanation as to how all these freaks ended up in religious orders.
Just a quick question for the people in the know:
If we were to go to nuclear power, would we be able to remove the coal fired units and just tap into the dynamos already there? Could the new nuke plant be twice the output and run the dynamos 20% harder, and wait for new dynamos to be added or are they already working at 100%?
Main reason for asking is “Where are our new dynamos coming from? Aren’t they mostly made in China, and isn’t there a world wide shortage of manufacturing capacity for them anyway?
And I notice that media commentators who might possibly be sort of on the side of personal choice seem increasingly to say stuff like, โIโm double vaxxed myself, butโฆโ to qualify their opinion.
Who gives a toss whether youโre double, quadruple or gazillion vaxxed? People are either free to decide what is injected into their bodies or not. And if theyโre punished and marginalised for deciding not to or rewarded for submitting then they are not โfreeโ.
It is as illusory as the rat in the maze who is rewarded with food or punished with a shock.
So, JC, you buy a widget and have found a use for it that the seller didn’t envisage and now the seller gets to charge you more for it or prohibits that use? IIRC there is a fair bit of debate about “right to repair” equipment you bought.
From the geneva network article:
In the United States, for example, the FDA prohibits pharmaceutical
companies from marketing drugs for โoff-labelโ uses. And while there
is no prohibition on medical doctors prescribing drugs for unapproved
indications, obtaining regulatory approval encourages prescriptions
for second medical use
My bolding
I’d have thought that once the word got around that the off label use was beneficial the smarter docs, when not prohibited by law (Australia currently), would simply prescribe it for that use.
Obtaining regulatory approval encourages prescriptions for second medical use
Which means regulatory approval is purely beneficial to the drug company for advertising to sell more of the product. If it is really cheap, too bad. We have enough government funded researchers to explore off label uses of common drugs.

NYC protest Australian tyranny.
Reports in the media re the Ashes Series and whether the English cricketers will accept 14 days quarantine to come here to play or whether the government will relent and allow them just 7 days because they’ve been vaccinated. How would that go down with unvaccinated Australians who are being told by state premiers that the may not cross state borders yet a bunch of non-citizens could do so because of a jab? So, what, vaccination status would provide greater benefits and take precedence over citizenship status? Well, that ain’t gonna fly.
centuries old answer.
When you are rich the cops protect you from the thieving poor.
When you are poor the cops stop you stealing stuff (to survive).
Hence the rich tolerate the cops and the poor do not. Because the poor do not like the plod, the plod target the poor.
The problem we have in Dandickinthedonutstan is that the cops have decided to steal from everybody.

Reasons to destroy the Liberal Party; Part ?????:
Berejiklian is being touted from within the party as a likely federal candidate, even prime ministial material.
Actually, if it keeps on this track the Liberal Party will destroy itself.
How about this:
While 35 000+ Australians remain stranded overseas, the Liberal government brought in 60 000+ migrants in 2020/21, the leading country of origin being China.
Love to see it when a lefty like Marr is hoist on his own petard, John.
Itโs their fucking property right and therefore have the right to exploit the re-purpose. Stiff cheddar.
Your comparison with an oil company ‘discovering’ oil on a redneck’s property is null and void. They’re legal terms in case you’re wondering. Another legal term is that ivermectin is an off-patent drug, no one owns it. Copyright and patent law is specific: you can’t take a product, tinker with it and claim it as your own. Pfizer didn’t invent/discover ivermectin and if as it appears, all they have done is change its structure, a common procedure with complex drugs, while maintaining it’s anti-viral effect then it would be an interesting case. But, it begs the question, if this ‘new’ drug does the same thing as ivermectin why isn’t ivermectin used since it has a 60 year proven record as an anti-viral. Same as Hydroxychlorine.
Really? That is a scandal of epic proportions.
Exactly where did these 60,000 quarantine?
This is definitely a dry and factual account of the situation that I can definitely believe.
Has anyone seen my scythe?

https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2016/12/chinas-plans-to-begin-converting-coal.html
The “balance of plant” parts of both are essentially the same: they boil water to make steam, the steam expands to make a turbine spin, the spinning turbine turns an electrical generator. The conversion only requires replacing the coal boiler with a nuclear reactor – although it’s not quite as simple as it sounds.
“Love to see it when a lefty like Marr is hoist on his own petard, John.”
I suspect Marr knew the whole Pell witch hunt was a travesty from the beginning but he supported the lynching because he loathed Pell for being a robust unapologetic conservative. Marr lacks the decency to come out and say that the whole “get Pell” was our Dreyfus Affair.
Third theory
P@edophilia is a “sexuality”, just like gay, Lesbian, bi- they’re “born that way”.
And it’s screamingly obvious that it’s hideously destructive to kids.
So, paedos are attracted to systems which give them access to vulnerable, ie with no parents near, kids- schools, churches, the UNHCR. It’s all over the news, it should be obvious.
Theory 2 1/2, that gay men are attracted to clerical life because of the discipline and celibacy, and the odd one breaks out into p@edophilia acts because it’s a situation which is put in front of them… doesn’t really add up to me. As much as it drives Marr mad- because to admit paedo’s are an indelible sexuality like LGB puts the LGB crowd in hideous company- I can only guess, like bestiosexuality and that bird who married her chandelier, a prepubescent kid, who cannot be left to make their own bodily decisions yet, is a different person to a hairy grown-up of any gender.

Making life harder for anyone on the basis of their covid vaccination status is just crazy, given the facts we have. It makes as much sense to ban the vaxxed from restaurants as it does the unvaxxed.
