Too good to let it die on the old thread:

With all the discussion about movie firearms, there is an exhaustive movie firearms database available to all (if you can put up with the ads).

It lists entries by movie, or firearm, or actor.

For example, here is the entry for American Sniper.

There is no room for dissent from the fascist party line at The Age. From the Paywallian’s Media Diary:

Michael Leunig’s storied half-century career as The Age’s best-known editorial page cartoonist has ended not with a bang, but a whimper.

A cryptic 39-word statement on its letters page last Monday said that the venerable Melbourne newspaper was “trialling new cartoonists” on the page.

Now Leunig has confirmed to Diary that he was axed from his prized Monday editorial page position by The Age, after it dumped a cartoon in which he compared Daniel Andrews’ threat of “vaccine mandates” for Victoria to the famous Tiananmen Square vision of “Tank Man”, the Beijing dissenter who defiantly faced off against the Chinese government’s tanks in 1989.

“ ‘Purge’ is a word that comes to mind,” he tells Diary of his axing. “Apparently, I’m out of touch with the readership.”

The cartoon never made it into the newspaper because The Age refused to publish it. But Leunig self-published on his own online site, earning angry criticism from #IStandWithDan supporters on social media. Leunig says The Age’s editor Gay Alcorn* called him soon after she banned the offending cartoon to “break the news gently” that he was no longer wanted on the editorial page.

“Gay feels this type of cartoon is not in line with public sentiment, and The Age’s readership, who it does seem are largely in favour of the Andrews Covid narrative. But my job is to challenge the status quo, and that has always been the job of the cartoonist.”

Leunig has defended the offending cartoon: “The Tiananmen Square image is often used in cartoons around the world as a Charlie Chaplin-like metaphor for overwhelming force meeting the innocent powerless individual. In my view, it is a fair enough issue to raise in the most locked-down city in the world.” Alcorn’s message to him in the phone calls was that “I am too out of step with our readers” – even though, he says, a Michael Leunig Appreciation Page operated by The Age on Facebook currently has more than 213,000 followers.

“If what Gay says is right, I don’t much want to work for the sorts of readers who are so censorious. It seems that at The Age in particular, you can’t go near the Covid story except in a way that’s supportive of the Victorian government’s handling of it. And if you’re not supportive, that’s reason enough for you to be cancelled.”

Leunig has also let rip on how the news was revealed in The Age last Monday. “The way it was done was rude,” he said. “It was a pretty blunt, discourteous and frustrating way to have a half-century of editorial cartooning at The Age brought to an end.”

Leunig, who remains on the list of Australia’s 76 National Living Treasures, says that he has built “a reputation at The Age for being feral or a bit out of hand”. “But that’s the point of a cartoonist – not to be a wrecker, but also not to be too conventional or goodly,” he says. “My greatest dismay in all of this is the wretched state of cartooning and humour in The Age. It’s as if they want to destroy or subjugate cartooning.

“I do understand that a newspaper must be free to control its content and refuse to publish pieces as it reasonably sees fit. I have had cartoons censored during my 55 years of editorial cartooning and have always had the reasons for rejection explained to me by editors in intelligent, respectful ways. It is not rejection that bothers me. It’s the wokeism and the humourlessness, which seem without courage, good spirit or creative imagination.”

He also believes his perspective has increasingly diverged with The Age over time: “I come from an earthy working class perspective and values system, but that perspective increasingly seems out of touch with The Age’s cosy, inner-city mindset these days. The paper’s motto is ‘Independent. Always.’ But is it truly independent?”

Leunig now claims that he has had 12 cartoons censored this year, “all about Covid and/or Dan Andrews, with next to no explanation”.

When Diary reached Alcorn on Sunday, she maintained she still viewed Leunig as “quite brilliant” and noted that his lifestyle cartoons would “continue to be published” in its Saturday Spectrum section. “I’m not surprised Michael is upset,” she said. “He’s entitled to be upset if he wants to be.”

Alcorn confirmed she had censored a number of cartoons by Leunig this year: “I have pulled multiple cartoons by Leunig, almost entirely on the grounds that they expressed an anti-vaccination sentiment. We don’t mind cartoonists challenging the readers. We encourage diversity of thought, but I had a concern with cartoons perceived as anti-vaccination.”

Interestingly, The Age is already in full swing on a concerted marketing push for Leunig’s flagship annual calendar — a well-known money-spinner for Nine papers — and other Leunig merchandise. But Leunig’s comments to Diary today could make for an interesting dynamic.

We don’t mind cartoonists challenging the readers. We encourage diversity of thought, but I had a concern with cartoons perceived as anti-vaccination.”

The Seedy Moaning Haemorrhoid is running ads for itself that encapsulates it so perfectly.

The one I see most often is where they print the platitude “Speak like you are right. Listen like you are wrong.” It is not a tenet, it is not a principle, it is not a doctrine. It is a wrapper. It is a motto they attach to their product because the product cannot argue for it itself.

But in this case it is not just that the SMH that is trying to fool people with this bromide credo, but its readers are fooling themselves, letting them role play at being intellectual. It lets them feel open minded while they keep their minds closed and provides a retreat when they are in arguments – “I am not losing, the other guy is exasperating because he is so closed minded.”

Recite the open minded label and do the close minded thing.

Leak hits the nail on the head – Gladys had to go. For once, ICAC did us all a favour. Anyone with half a brain knows Vic’s leash has been loosened slightly because of what’s happening in NSW. Shame it doesn’t work the same way elsewhere.

What, exactly, has Perrottet done? As far as I can see, he’s stuck PRECISELY to Gladys’ roadmap, with just a minimal tweak to school dates. He hasn’t brought anything forward. He will forever wear the odium of introducing apartheid to this country as it happened on his watch. He hasn’t even taken the extra step promised when 90%(?) of this sham was reached.

Speaking of partisan newspapers:

The NT News ran this ‘piece’ yesterday, apropos of the 2500 or people, of whom most were in family groups, that gathered in Darwin on Saturday afternoon:

PROTESTERS have again gathered on the Darwin Esplanade on Saturday to rally against the Territory government’s vaccine mandate for workers who come into contact with people vulnerable to Covid-19.

There has been zero community transmission of ‘the beast’ whatsoever in the NT. None.

The group braved the 35C heat to vent their spleens at the impost of forced protection from a slow, painful death through a global pandemic that has so far claimed the lives of almost five million people worldwide.

It wasn’t an editorial or op-ed. It was run as a news story.

The person responsible for this is Jason Walls. Recently, he was publicly squealing like a hipster trapped in a Bunnings in the same paper because he was asked questions by the local ICAC.

I’ve had Nariel in particular and the Corryong area in general on my list for many, many years. Sadly, it’s a very long way to the nearest Woollies (ie dentist / doctor / specialist / etc). So I had to pass up “the” property there in 2019/2020. It was at the end of a dead-end road off that road to nowhere, along the river. Cheap, too. Back when I thought I’d happily stay in Australia. Unvaccinated adults and older children will be barred from accessing all but basic services until 2023 under the Victorian government’s path back to freedom announced by the Premier on Sunday.

By the end of next month, almost all the current COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted, with a key exception. “If you’re not vaccinated, you’re not getting in,” said Premier Daniel Andrews.

Mr Andrews was unable to say when the vaccination rules might end, but he thought “it’s going to be there for the entirety of 2022”. He said the public health team was only confident in dropping almost all restrictions at 90 per cent because of large-scale vaccination requirements well into next year.

But while the Victorian Premier has indefinitely excluded unvaccinated people from the state’s reopening plan, NSW is set to lift most restrictions on all its citizens from December 1.

Mr Andrews said those who were unvaccinated could still visit other people’s homes and shop for the basics, but they would be barred from the vast majority of other venues.

“Whether it’s a bookshop, a shoe shop, a pub, cafe, a restaurant, the MCG, the list goes on and on. You will not be able to participate like a fully vaccinated person because you’re not a fully vaccinated person,” he said

He is insane.

The AFP are apparently surprised that the Taliban won’t ‘engage’ with them (the Hun):

The probe into alleged war crimes by ADF Special Forces in Afghanistan is in disarray with the Australian Federal Police casting doubt on its ability to find witnesses or operate under the Taliban regime.

In its submission to an inquiry into Australia’s engagement in Afghanistan over 20 years, the AFP has formally conceded any inroads made in that country – including training and mentoring thousands of Afghan police – were now all but gone post Kabul’s fall to the Taliban.

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

“The AFP is not engaging with Taliban controlled Afghanistan,” the AFP concluded bluntly.

The AFP recognised its responsibility to look into the alleged Special Forces behaviour between 2005 and 2016 as dictated by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, but admits it was now tough.

“The security situation in Afghanistan may affect the ongoing investigation of war crimes allegedly perpetrated by ADF personnel in that obtaining evidence and accessing potential witnesses residing there is likely to be more difficult,” it states.

Perhaps a Captain Obvious moment, but this seems to indicate a point of view was held by some numbnut that the AFP would be able to rock on into anywhere in Afghanistan it liked and offer goats in exchange for statements favourable to this excremental enquiry.

All under the benevolent hand of…. the Taliban.

t would be somewhat – ironical – if Fauci is destroyed, not by his lies about HIV/AIDS or by the whole Kung Flu/Gain of Function debacle, but by cruelty to dogs.

It is a curious paradox of modern politics that leaders are felled not by their most heinous crimes but by trivia. For example, that creep Governor Cuomo who killed thousands of oldsters by forcing them to stay in institutions with raging COVID (among other appalling acts) was brought down because he got handsy with women.

A NSW Premier perished because of a bottle of wine.

I suspect Fauci is gorn, because cute puppies, never mind what he did to people.

Apart from the sheer cruelty of the beagle ‘experiments’, what I can’t understand is what hypothesis they were supposed to be testing. I’ve read several stories from the US about it, but that question is never even raised in the fog of indignation.

Geraldton police shooting: JC’s heartbroken son asks ‘why man who shot mum is not in jail’

It is why they can claim to champion free speech, for example, and yet demand certain opinions may not be spoken. They can discern that some speech is not included in ‘free’ – because some speech might discourage others from speaking, so it is like ‘anti-speech’ and ought to be suppressed.

And how does it discourage free speech? Well, someone doesn’t want to hear it. It makes them uncomfortable. So open debate demands speech be policed.

Nuanced, huh?

I would also note that I suspect they would not have embraced the word if they had not also imported the French pronunciation. If it was ‘new-ants’ they would be snuffling about like a pig among foliage looking for a word that sounded exotic. Classic lefty “apology”, I’m sorry that you choose to be upset.

He reckoned 90% of the jabbed will be dead in 18 to 48 months.

Dolores Cahill gives younger jabees about ten years before the kill shots take them out. For old farts of my age, about four years.

Found a weird astroturfing site.

https://africacheck.org/get-involved/join-our-team/researcher-full-time

Based in our head office, located in the Journalism Department of Wits University in Johannesburg, Africa Check seeks to appoint a researcher (full-time).

A minimum of three years’ experience in fact-related fields such as media, research and academia

Oh god.

Found a “health” section that says don’t use home remedies on warts (some of which work better than what doctors can use), but you can use sugar to heal wounds.

Was going to re-read the book before watching the flic and I’m glad I decided to hit play.
Trying to expel memories of Kyle MacLachlan and Sting took a bit, though.

We don’t mind cartoonists challenging the readers. We encourage diversity of thought, but I had a concern with cartoons perceived as anti-vaccination.”

It’s about a decade since the Age announced an editorial policy of not printing any stories that might undermine the consensus for “climate action”.
That is, they’d decided what their readers should believe* and were going to make damn sure that no alternative viewpoint reached them, at least not through the Age anyway.
Good to see they’re being consistent.

*I first typed “…what their readers should think…”, then realised my error.

Where’s struth?

Leave the kid alone. He’s busy shorting bank and real estate stocks. With 80% of the population dead in 18 months he’ll collect billions as the economy collapses.

Whatever happened to his starvation prediction anyways. I haven’t noticed any emaciated folks walking around for lack of food. I’ll call them Struth’s anorexics.

Sweet Baby Cheeses.
The Dapto Dog Caller is using his medical expert’s direct extrapolation of the UK’s per capita ChiComPox mortality rate to declare there would’ve been 51k dead ‘strayans if we’d “taken off the handbrake” like the Poms did.

His GP is flat-out trying to put it down to Ross River Virus, anything other that adverse jab, and trying to keep him on schedule for a repeat dose. Will not grant an exemption

Our GP mentioned that she was told off for reporting “too many” jabs’ adverse reactions.

He will be the end of the monarchy but not for that reason.

Bear – He’ll be the end of the monarchy for precisely that reason. The supporters of the monarchy tend to be righties, who detest climate rubbish. So once he starts oozing green goo all over Buckingham Palace they’ll cheerfully vote for him and Green Willy to piss off.

Royal Family support: How many people back the monarchy? Staggering royal fans chart (24 Oct)

Statista asked 1,629 Brits the question: “Do you think Britain should continue to have a monarchy in the future, or should it be replaced with an elected head of state?”

Their survey found that although the royals are loved by many across all age groups, the biggest fans of the Royal Family are among those aged 65 and older.

In contrast, the lowest support for the monarchy is among 18 to 24-year-old’s.

He won’t win enough support from lefty kiddies to offset the oldies turning away in disgust.

Prince Charles has a dangerously narrow window of opportunity to escape being written off as an ignorant idiot.

Interesting prediction, doc. Name one figure on the alarmist side of the debate in the past 30 years who’s suffered severe reputational damage from making outlandish claims. I wouldn’t even say Flannery has suffered any fall out with his laughable drought forever prediction.

One name is fine.

Isn’t it funny how the Elite, you know specially the ones with access to virtually unlimited amount of other peoples money can say the most stupid things. Must be due to no repercussions, the money still flows. On Flannery, never knew who he was when he got AoY. I heard on the news a water guy had been made AoY. I thought it was Peter Stewart, the guy who did Gerry Harvey’s (spit) farm. Saw a program about how he regreened the farm with the same water coming into the property from the river as went out. The problems he had with NSW govt. but finally winning, only because GH had pull with the pollies. It was the only farm in the area that was not a dust bowl. Stupid me, I thought that was worthy of AoY as an example of real beneficial application to be used in so many places throughout Australia. I came here in 1979 and in all that time I can’t come up with 10 recipients that I thought were deserving, but that’s just me.

Is the AZ mRNA? It’s the most traditional one among them isn’t it?

Indolent, accept your fate and be done with it. Professor Struth says you’ll be dead in 18 months anyway. Enjoy the sunshine and don’t leave anything to the kids. Charter a private jet to a beach resort and spend it all before time’s up.

My comment was a response to Cassie, whose comment was a response to Struth. Personally, I part of the great unclean, not fit to associate with those greater, observant beings.
