I am flaked right now I’ve just finished my work on saving a church. Except for the final lap, which comes in a couple of weeks. May well be a fruitless enterprise but at least I’ve tried. Including firing off emails and hard copies to a World Heritage site in pas-de-calais in France. I’ve travelled in this journey from many places in the UK, to New Zealand, to Canberra, Tasmania, Ontario Canada, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, the United States and elsewhere. I’ve gone back in time to a second century Gallo-Roman villa and on the way picked up a bastard son of Henry 1 as well as an advisor to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Biggest surprise has been it seems Hairy’s mother may have married a war hero bearing my highly unusual family name in his recent ancestry; no-one knew. He was killed in the Far East in WW2 and I found him on Bomber Command’s Lost Heroes’ site. She later married Hairy’s father. He was quite knocked out by that find. Coincidence much?

A couple of years ago (about the time of the Pell trial) I was at a dinner with a few people, and one of them was a psych.
The subject came up of j’isms who see pedos behind every tree and he had a really interesting theory.
He reckons that quite often they were abused themselves by a close family member (father, older brother) in a large, really tightly structured traditional family. They often never confront it, but their coping mechanism is to sort of “normalise” it. That is, they convince themselves that it is going on everywhere so what their family member did wasn’t really so abnormal. In fact, the abuse they imagine is happening in the wider community is even more grotesque than what happened to them.
Unusual theory, but plausible in many ways.
They sort the men from the boys, someone told me they used to be prison fags.
Do you ever get cravings? I quit in 2013 but it took a few years for them to stop.

9.30 mass at the cathedral?
None of the five other attendees (not including the dog) bothered to wear medical masks, let alone ‘rags’ (the dog didn’t either) and quite frankly it makes little difference to me.
There was a little compliance by priest and congregation during holy Communion though.
I’m simply not prepared to let minor things like a mask, or pain from an old broken foot bone, interfere with my holiday or appreciation of mass or anything much else.
And I thought I made it clear that compliance with outdoor mask wearing is minimal, the police here clearly don’t care.
On mass going, the cathedral here in Ajaccio is much in need of repair but nothing like as sad as the interior of oratory of Saint Roch which was my other option.
The back wall in the holy sacrament chapel of the cathedral still has the holes in the wall from where the retable was ripped during a pillage (revolution?) , the shape is the missing work is clearly visible.

There is an article in The Conservation that raises a serious question about our mental health strategies because despite huge increases in antidepressant prescribing and provision of mental health services depression, anxiety, and suicide prevalence remains unchanged. A Medical Journal of Australia study found the ABS data reportage of symptoms of anxiety and depression hasn’t changed that much in the last 20 years. So there isn’t a depression epidemic but there is a huge increase in diagnoses and nearly all of that is made by GPs. There was another recent report indicating that long term use of antidepressants is often not necessary so there is a lot of over prescribing happening. The mental health profession really has to get over this medical model of depression and anxiety because biological drivers of depression are very uncommon(which is the opposite of conditions like schizophrenia and autism, very strong genetic\developmental component). Too many people expect too much from life. Sometimes it is that simple.

So you’ve read Scott Barry Kaufman. I’ve had some arguments with him. Latest driver of Positive Psychology which I hold in unalloyed contempt. However SBK has written two very good books, Ungifted and Twice Exceptional. His latest book though he goes straight back into Maslow and humanist psychology. From the 60’s, ya know that hippie time? Maslow’s is crap and while humanist psychology has some interesting ideas it is not science.
Neuropsychology is fascinating and very important but it is mostly about rehabilitation for those with brain injuries.
I’ve been receiving them for several months.
They come in waves. Several per day, from a multitude of numbers.
Then a week or few without, then another run.
Don’t remember the town – there were memorials to the dead of Indo – China and Algeria, but one of the more evocative was to those of the locals who were sent to Germany as slave labor, and never returned.
And lets face it, they are trying to track down and capture the common cold.

I think the biggest problem in the 60s and 70s was the silence and ignorance of kids around sexual matters and the far greater authority wielded by adults.

Interesting theory…..and one I suspect that has some merit. But I also think there are the rabid contagions that infiltrate through societies at times…..I guess they’re part of the human story, just like human disease. These contagions run amok and succeed in fractured societies dominated by fear, political and social upheaval, societal change and turmoil. And in these fractured societies the contagions prey on and nest in the minds of the vulnerable, the alienated, the angry, the evil, the stupid, the disturbed, the wretched and the miserable….they are used as political tools to destroy people as what happened in the 1950s and as what happened here in Oz recently with the campaign against Cardinal Pell. When I think of these contagions I’m reminded of the aliens in the Ridley Scott films. BERLIN (AFP) – German police have conducted raids across two states in investigations into child pornography with victims as young as infants, local authorities said on Wednesday (Jan 26), while 100 suspects have been identified in a third case.
The raids in the southern state of Bavaria took place on Tuesday and targeted 50 properties connected to 55 suspects aged between 18 and 73, the state’s interior minister Joachim Herrmann and justice minister Georg Eisenreich said.
They are accused of obtaining videos showing severe and violent abuse of children, including infants.
In Saxony state, the homes of 36 suspects accused of possessing, buying or distributing child pornography were raided last week in and around the city of Chemnitz, police said.
Meanwhile, investigators in the western city of Wuppertal said they had identified around 100 suspects as part of a probe into two men accused of sexually abusing children as young as five months.
The two original suspects, aged 22 and 44, are accused of abusing children from 2016 to 2021 as well as photographing and filming the assaults.
The new suspects are accused of obtaining the resulting child pornography, the investigators said on Wednesday.
The children are said to have been between five months and 12 years old.
Germany has been shaken by several serious cases of child sex abuse in recent years.
Investigators said earlier this month they had identified 439 suspected paedophiles as part of a probe into a huge child pornography network linked to the city of Bergisch Gladbach.
In 2020, 11 people were arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing children and filming their actions after videos and photos were seized from the cellar of a 27-year-old man from the city of Muenster.
In an earlier scandal in Luegde, 125km from Muenster, several men preyed on children at a campsite for years.

Berlin, Germany — More than 400 suspected pedophiles have been identified in Germany as part of a probe into a huge child pornography network linked to the city of Bergisch Gladbach, investigators said on Wednesday.
A total of 439 suspects have been identified and 65 children have been freed from the clutches of pedophiles since the network was uncovered in October 2019, the Berg special investigation group said.
“We have suspects from all walks of life” including “high earners and highly educated people” as well as “ordinary people,” said investigation group leader Michael Esser.
“They went about their work quite normally and there were no indications in the working environment that such acts had been committed,” Esser said.
Most of the children were abused by a member of their own family, the investigators said.
The victims were aged between under a year old and 17, with the youngest rape victim just three months old at the time of the crime.
The Bergisch Gladbach case was opened in 2019 with the arrest of a suspect known as Joerg L.
Police then were shocked to stumble upon a vast network of pedophiles who abused children and shared images of the crimes in online chat groups and discussion forums, leading to one of Germany’s biggest ever child sex abuse investigations.
The state’s justice minister, Peter Biesenbach, announced last year that investigators had come across 30,000 potential suspects connected with the network.
Joerg L. was sentenced to 12 years in jail in October 2020 for sexually abusing his daughter since she was three months old.
He was found guilty of dozens of acts of child abuse and rape as well as distributing child pornography, mostly involving his daughter who was born in 2017.
