We’re not going to do HMAS Sydney being sunk by the perfidious Japs in November 1941 are we?
Please no.
At the expense of being sanctioned by the Doverlord for scab-picking, the Hunt for Ed October was perhaps one of the funniest episodes we have experienced on the Cat. While not as vicious and long-lived as the First Great Truck vs. Train War (Hail to Team Zeppelin! Hail!), it was something to be well remembered… 🙂
It’s Russia that has the long term problem as no country on earth wants to be tied up with those fucks.
I don’t think so. India is already ramping up deliveries of oil from Russia. The non-Western world won’t blink over Ukraine. There are multiple conflicts going on that don’t lead to sanctions regimes being imposed. They will buy Russian commodities if it’s in their interests without a second thought.
And good on Wafia for this – epic stuff, following the golden unspoken rules of that rather regrettable muzakal style.
Best listened to turned up to eleventy, BTW … 🙂

Now, whomever it was who recommended to visit Fairbrossen for nice wine- Thank You. 🙂
The Saperavi is indeed delightful, and the elder Angers and I also quite appreciated their Verdelho. Multiple bottles of each were acquired for ‘Ron. Ditto 2 bottles of their ‘Pedro’ fortified wine. I am hopeful it does not hit like a Dorper.
As a polite warning to other Cats, while the wine is quite good, and the sampling platters quite reasonable as snackies, there is no food or coffee provided. And the sign on the front says so quite clearly. Pack a picnic and thermos, or flash in on your way to somewhere else nice.
Still a lovely and recommended place to visit, nonetheless.

Pedro, the lyrics are pretty gruesome.
English translation:
Arise, children of the Fatherland
Our day of glory has arrived
Against us the bloody flag of tyranny
is raised; the bloody flag is raised.
Do you hear, in the countryside
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
They’re coming right into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your comrades!
To arms, citizens!
Form your battalions
Let’s march, let’s march
That their impure blood

The tune’s ok, but we should replace the lyrics with “I love a sunburnt country”.
Try singing it to yourself. It goes really well.
We’d need to agree on the “In joyful strains then let us sing” bit, but that’s an easily dealt with detail.

Most here seem to think that a military invasion is how another country, say Chine would invade. That would be really dumb. The best way for them to get a foothold here would be to simply load up as many ships as possible with civilians, especially families, sail to Darwin, they already control the port and disembark the people, return and bring back more asap. What could we do? If we attacked unarmed ships of civilians we would be labelled as barbarians. You can’t kill or imprison that many people when they got here. Their sheer weight of numbers would enable them to overwhelm all forces available as well as the Australian population. They could just commandeer housing, food, anything they want. Much of the local population would just flee south. Then China could deliver supplies until the new population could self sustain. There is simply nothing we could do and we would then have a major Chinese city on our turf, it would just keep expanding to all habitable areas.
Sounds like a political, diplomatic and immigration issue, not a military one.
I’m not familiar with the modern port of Darwin, but I question how many ships could tie up alongside simultaneously. Even if many can, there will be Customs and Immigration staff to sound an immediate alarm.
The AFP then board any ship tied up alongside, and arrest the crews and charge them with people smuggling. Ditto for any other ships in the harbour carrying unexplained passengers. Take all ships already alongside out into the harbour, and anchor the whole group well offshore. Make suitable arrangements to feed all aboard, and provide medical care if necessary. Spice things up by dumping some abbatoir waste near the ships, to discourage swimming.
Then call in the Chinese ambassador in Canberra, explain that we have reason to believe that several ships in Darwin are carrying people who could seek political asylum. Assure the ambassador that we are concerned to keep amicable relations between our two nations, and seek Chinese assistance to return the ships and passengers to China.
I could go on, but I hope you have got my drift.

Commenters have largely focused on the Invasion element of national defence (from the four broad threat categories of Blockade, Bombardment, Invasion and Insurgency), so let’s turn to that.
As with Blockade, there is good news, and there is bad news. Starting with the bad news, Australia is a big country, with a lot of area to defend. The good news, however, is that Australia is a big country, with a lot of area to be attacked.
There is little point in an invader landing in the northern tip of the Kimberley, as the logistics of supporting an invading force there would be only slightly more challenging (think huge tidal ranges, and few beaches) than the practicality of moving from there to somewhere significant.
Boambee John,
An attacking force which came in from the south would cause major problems. If they could sail down either the east or west coast and launch an attack on Port Augusta or the Eyre Peninsula, they could immediately close down east-west and north-south movements.

A (relatively) few words on Bombardment.
Australia gains a lot of natural protection from its size. Putting aside ICBMs armed with nuclear warheads, bombing major cities in Australia is made difficult by distance. Even with bases in Indonesia, PNG or New Caledonia, few nations have aircraft with a long enough range to reach our southern cities. Fewer still have many of them.
That said, keeping a fighter force, but also buying long range SAM systems are worthwhile, at least in part because they would also contribute to defence against invasion. Both the fighter units and the SAM systems, however, must be mobile. Our last effort at a long range SAM, buying the Bloodhound from the UK in the 1960s, ended up with two fixed sites at Williamtown and Darwin. there was never a credible bomber threat to Newcastle of Sydney at the time.
Only Insurgency to go, tomorrow.

Of course, it’s the entire purpose of, Mean Girl blocks; to ‘get away with murder’ (and the ‘castration’ of ‘bothersome’ strong men), in a “robust business” where men can no longer be honest about the savagery of women, and women who aren’t backed by a savage pack are publicly shredded for daring to try to function as individuals –
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says Kimberley Kitching never complained to him about her treatment amid allegations the late-Senator was bullied by a faction of “mean girls” within Labor.
Albanese and others have said that they are unwilling to talk out of respect for KK as the funeral has not yet taken place.
Can we expect then, on Tuesday, there will be a discussion and investigation of Mean Girls and Mean Boys?
If only the Mean Girls had been from the Liberal side. Or better still, it had been Mean Boys.
Where is the Tame-Higgins clan to support the ill-treatment of a female? Let’s hope there are journos and media commentators who will not led this fade away.
As for Albo, he defends the Mean Girls:
“Politics can be a robust business but politics is better for the participation of valued colleagues in leadership positions, including Penny, Katy and Kristina.
“They are all making an outstanding contribution and I’m very proud of the fact that I lead a team that has 50 per cent women make up the Shadow Cabinet, outstanding, strong, principled women and they continue to make a contribution.””
The lesson that the Libs will learn from this is that they needed to be more Left-wing. Harder on COVID, more Green, more DragQueen/GloboHomo, etc. They are drawing plans as we speak to outflank Labor from the Left next time. Always from the Left.
Sacré bleu, Eddles – you do not get to lecture me about the idiosyncrasies of human speech, given you’re barely able to string a coherent sentence together in any known human language.
At this point Cats, we should all take a break from these petty squabbles and acknowledge the mighty achievements of one Zaphod Beeblebrox, who was voted the “Worst Dressed Sentient Being in the Known Universe” seven consecutive times.
Sigh – I can only ever aspire to such unimaginable greatness 😕
Another one term Liberal government. A Liberal government that was Labor lite….in fact you could argue that Peter Malinauskas, the new Labor premier, is probably more right-wing than the Liberal Marshall ever was. And Marshall is struggling to retain his own seat….shades of Zac Cockup in WA.

I wasn’t at all excited when Marshall won- I’ve seen that movie before- Failyou in Vicco and O’Barrell in NSW. In fairness to Napthine if he hadn’t taken over late in the piece he might have been ok but tolerating ambulance officers defacing public property is piss weak.

How is it that The HighWire’s reporting on Covid has been so far ahead? How did we know so much about the public health players, and the games they would play with lockdowns and vaccines? Because, they’ve done it all before.
The HighWire presents “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe,” the movie that exposes one of the biggest public health scandals of all time. They say ‘vaccines don’t cause autism,’ but they never told you this.
I don’t believe they are capable of learning because of their backgrounds and circles they move in. They might as well be from Mars. Same with most pollimuppetts. Pauline is one of the few real people who went into politics. Latham seems to have been able to sense the rottenness career politics which is very unusual seeing he is a career politician.
Malinauskas has hinted that nuclear is the way forward in the climate battle. Be interesting to see if that goes anywhere given the dire situation SA is in.
“The lesson that the Libs will learn from this is that they needed to be more Left-wing. Harder on COVID, more Green, more DragQueen/GloboHomo, etc. They are drawing plans as we speak to outflank Labor from the Left next time. Always from the Left.”

Will the Liberals ever learn?
I doubt it. I was an unwilling visitor to a cocktail do last evening to introduce a local business man who at least has put his money where his mouth is and is going to try and win our state seat for the Liberals. He’s off to a good start in that his campaign office, plastered with huge blue liberal signage has pissed off certain green local councillors who pushed hard to make him take them down but failed. So, a small win.
He seems a nice enough chap but could not give me a coherent answer to my question of how the VIC Libs under Guy can win back previously loyal but now totally disaffected Liberal supporters. It was approved talking points about how Matty learned a lesson in 2018 and is now a changed man. A great leader in fact.
The rest of the group that I chatted to just blathered on about how this time will be different. And how the current mean girls imbroglio will deliver the PMship back to ScoMo. It was a bit like how previous premiership teams sliding down the league ladder desperately cling to their past glories as they try to convince you how next season will be different. Sad.
I’m not sure they are capable of learning anything. Stop rabbiting on about what you are going to do…instead show us what you believe in by living the actual Liberal values your base expects and wants. Net zero by 2050 is not going to do it for you.
SA will be seen as in unfortunate blip. The Feds getting a similar or worse result may, or may not, wake them from their rose coloured dream. They are sleepwalking into oblivion.

The lesson that the Libs will learn from this is that they needed to be more Left-wing. Harder on COVID, more Green, more DragQueen/GloboHomo, etc. They are drawing plans as we speak to outflank Labor from the Left next time. Always from the Left.
This is a common characteristic of two party systems across the world – without exception, nominally conservative major parties are prone to believing they can win elections by running to the left. It has never worked, it’s 100% guaranteed to fail, it always results in alienated core voters who look elsewhere…maybe there is some satisfaction gained from leftists (who take it as a vindication of their shitty ideologies because, look! Even the evil Tories are coming around!) but certainly no votes from them. However, conservative political strategists are incapable of learning this lesson. It’s so bizarre. They’re like those modern-day reds who want to give communism another go because this time they’ll do it right. No, it doesn’t work, it will never work, stop trying it because it’s going to fail.
Traditionally left-leaning parties can win elections by attracting typically conservative votes with policy platforms that focus on particular issues like defence or fiscal prudence/reform. Traditionally right-leaning parties cannot win elections by attracting typically progressive votes. Can’t be done. Sorry, mainstream conservative politicians, this may be unfair, but you just have to accept it.
Yet, you won’t. And you’ll keep on trying to make it work. And losing.
Don’t knock ducks, disco or otherwise.

I’m not sure what value striking a large and static arms depot with a hype-personic missile would achieve over using a ‘mere’ supersonic one.
Unless the Russians’ stocks of stand-off precision munitions are all but expended, and the Kinzhal merchants’ hype-train (and order books) needed a bit of stoking…

Not big buildings that can’t move and do not have all the Phalanx CIWS guns, Standard and Sea Sparrow and other anti-missile missiles and radar jammers, chaff launchers and other countermeasures that can be physically jammed into them).
It is my melancholy duty to inform of the demise of Aussie Cossack, who has apparently fallen into the trap of making protests against government vaccine mandates all about him, and the pet issues closest to his heart.
Makes you wonder what his ultimate motives were for seeking (and getting) all that earlier publicity. Having said that, I am careful to note some of the language used in this Courier Mail piece:
A prominent pro-Putin activist has used an anti-vaccination protest in Sydney to sprout misinformation about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Video posted to social media showed Simeon Boikov, who goes by the name Aussie Cossack online, showed the Russian nationalist addressing the crowd outside of Scott Morrison’s official residence, Kirribilli House.
“This latest act by the West, what it is a deep state. It’s not Russia versus Ukraine. It’s Russia versus the New World Order,” he told the crowd.
“It’s Russia versus the deep state.”
He also claimed reports his young wife had taken an apprehended violence order out on him as “garbage”. “I demand an apology,” he shouted.
And:
Other speakers at the Kirribilli House protest encouraged people to vote for anti-vaccine mandate candidates. Prior to the speeches, the crowd could be seen blasting John Farnham’s greatest hits and dancing along.

If Aussie Cossack wants to be pro Russia that is up to him. However he should keep that issue away from any vaccine mandates protests as basically affects the reputation of the so called anti vaxxers of which I am proud to be one. If he turns up at a protest now his appearance is going to overshadow any genuine anti Vax protest.

100%, Bourne. It’s so disappointing to see what is probably the most crucial protest movement of our lifetimes overshadowed time and again by dickheads using that movement to further their own personal causes.
It hasn’t escaped my attention that Bosi started off as a ‘superstraight’ anti-mandatory vaxxer, then once he had a platform turned it into a donations vehicle for his shitfest of a ‘political party’ that isn’t.

Anyway, night all. I’m pleasantly awash in good Scotch.
We buried an old soldier in this town a few days ago. We gave him a good send off – every ex soldier from the district was there. Way back when, he reminded me of the old story about a drill instructor, catching a recruit, with his hands on his hips.
“Now listen lad, there are two types of people allowed to stand with their hands on their hips on this establishment – pregnant women and poofters. It is obvious that you are not pregnant, so we must endevour to curb your disgusting tendencies. Double around the parade ground – GO!”
Urgent business intervened, and an hour later, the drill instructor remembered that said recruit was still doubling around the parade ground. For some reason, there was one recruit who never put his hands on his hips, ever.
Rest in Peace, mate, you’ll never be forgotten.

I don’t think so. India is already ramping up deliveries of oil from Russia. The non-Western world won’t blink over Ukraine.
There’s a rail connection from Pakistan to Russia via Iran now but I don’t know if India could use that. Two breaks of gauge of course.
Sounds like something our former Troubadour in Residence might have in his repertoire.

An attacking force which came in from the south would cause major problems. If they could sail down either the east or west coast and launch an attack on Port Augusta or the Eyre Peninsula, they could immediately close down east-west and north-south movements.
Indeed, but where is this force to come from? Will some national leader with a significant navy wake up one morning and decide to invade? Which nations have a navy capable of such long distance power projection? I was trying to focus on credible opponents, most of which lack such capability, particularly at short notice.

Yeah, thanks, you loathsome technocrat gerbils. You’ve not conned me, but you have conned about 40% of the electorate.
Proud of yourselves? Oh wait – that’s shouting into an abyss.
Yep, the whole lesser of two evils thing is a load of crap. Libs need to get the Carthage treatment.
Well said.
This Seat had Xenophons “party” winning 11% last time.
They didn’t stand this time and the 11% went to Labor and The Greens.

Labor Girl only got 37.6%, Liberal girl 46%, but after preferences are counted she’s won with 56%.
So, 2% of Liberal primary votes flowed to the “Labor girl”? This is Numbers standard maths. If the Liberal got 46% primary, the absolute most Labor could end up with after preferences is 54%, and that only if absolutely no preferences flowed to the Liberal.
milts – this is why you opt out – no more legitimate votes.
At the risk of repeating myself, I’ll vote if there’s someone worth voting for eg Latham but I voted informal in the LA in that election.
Will voted UAP in the HoR this time and maybe LDP in the Senate.

What it should mean:
A love of Australia and respect for its history.
A healthy disrespect of authority.
A willingness to give people a fair go, while not cutting them any slack if they take advantage.
An ability to spot bullshit and call it out.
What it means in the 21st century:
A passport indicating citizenship with any or all of the following,
A toxic view of Australia,
Hatred of its history,
A love of authority,
A racist view of fellow citizens, with Aboriginal worship at the top and white denigration at the bottom,
A gullible willingness to follow rules no matter how ridiculous.
Just rounded it out, milton.
Its actually 91.3% (H/T Numbers)

Of course, it’s the entire purpose of, Mean Girl blocks; to ‘get away with murder’ (and the ‘castration’ of ‘bothersome’ strong men), in a “robust business” where men can no longer be honest about the savagery of women, and women who aren’t backed by a savage pack are publicly shredded for daring to try to function as individuals –
The lesson that the Libs will learn from this is that they needed to be more Left-wing. Harder on COVID, more Green, more DragQueen/GloboHomo, etc. They are drawing plans as we speak to outflank Labor from the Left next time. Always from the Left.

Hey hey!
Will the Liberals ever learn?
I wasn’t at all excited when Marshall won- I’ve seen that movie before- Failyou in Vicco and O’Barrell in NSW. In fairness to Napthine if he hadn’t taken over late in the piece he might have been ok but tolerating ambulance officers defacing public property is piss weak.
One thing though- it’s a beautiful evening in western Melbourne. Just magic.

Will the Liberals ever learn?
I don’t believe they are capable of learning because of their backgrounds and circles they move in. They might as well be from Mars. Same with most pollimuppetts. Pauline is one of the few real people who went into politics. Latham seems to have been able to sense the rottenness career politics which is very unusual seeing he is a career politician.
Yo – Miss Ellie, punking out (again) … 🙂
Malinauskas has hinted that nuclear is the way forward in the climate battle. Be interesting to see if that goes anywhere given the dire situation SA is in.

Possibly since it’s happened before but this was just pandering to bleed votes of the Libs I recon, Rex.
And losing.
Will the Liberals ever learn?
The real question is, will the electorate.

Have you tried “Wild Swan” at the Mandoon Estate?
I’m not sure what value striking a large and static arms depot with a hype-personic missile would achieve over using a ‘mere’ supersonic one.
Unless the Russians’ stocks of stand-off precision munitions are all but expended, and the Kinzhal merchants’ hype-train (and order books) needed a bit of stoking…
(The damn thing is meant to be the last word in smashing warships, after all.
And:
It’s the same one.

Time for some good ol’ fashioned R’n’R peoples! 🙂
On the subject of Chvrches’ Good Girls single I linked above while making an ironic blonde joke, I think their production, while quite good, is a little lacking in…well…body.
Something I think John Carpenter’s remix solves beautifully.
The OG How Not To Drown is pretty damn good. And needs to feature in the credit roll of a gritty, dark covert ops-thriller of some sort. Like the Bourne series, but less Maaaaatt Daaaaaymerrrnn-y…
He was amusing at first but my interest in his activites only lasted a few weeks as his routine was repetitive. Hopefully his YouTube is getting less hits although might get some Russian bot support.

It’s a goddamn shame to see Cossack go a very similar way.
Bluddee hell – he exists very near to me. A controversial figure (allegedly) according to our beloved braindead lamestream meeja.
Unfortunately, he strikes me as someone about to go full Bosi.
