Bullshit. Any sane doctor will tell you 10 year olds shouldn’t give birth.

The rules governing doctor conduct in Ohio are not sane, evidently. But hey, that’s what Republicans want.

Or, maybe, even evidently, like you, the complainer was not really interested in those rules, but (like you) only wanted to make a political point? But, hey, that’s what DemonRats want.

The 10-year-old rape victim had to travel out of Ohio to get an abortion,

No she did not.

due to laws put in place by Republicans which did not make exceptions for her situation.

That’s not true. You’re making stuff up here, the law (statute law quoted here) allows for abortions that arise from unsafe pregnancies. You are making up medical board rules, pulling them out of your rear.

Great article by Judith about the garbage that is the government in NSW

When Dominic Perrottet became the premier of New South Wales last October, after Gladys shuffled off after a brush with ICAC, I was filled with a degree of optimism. Here was a truly conservative politician, an elected person who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind.

One of my mates based in NSW was quick to set me straight. There was no way Perrottet would live up to my aspirations. He didn’t (and doesn’t) have the numbers, the ‘moderates’ (aka Labor-lites) in the NSW party call the shots and Perrottet would be no better than the wet leaders who preceded him.

How right was my friend! In many ways, Perrottet is worse than Gladys because he now goes against pretty much everything he once stood for. Where he once mocked the idea of having the indigenous flag flying from the harbour bridge, and other virtue-signalling paraphernalia, he now commands that the flag become a permanent feature – even at a cost of $25 million.

(Let’s just hope he has the time to get down to Bunnings to undercut the preferred provider of the new pole and flag. $25 million sounds a tad steep even if you are telling the world what a good person you are.)

And what’s all that stuff about the ‘ideological climate war’ Perrottet has been going on about and the ludicrous notion that the ‘state’s renewable target [50 per cent cut by 2030] will help future-proof its power supply’? Is he nuts? He might not have the numbers, but why would he actually make these remarks?

Now perhaps he has had a bad dose of green fever, but what explains his reference to an ‘entire lost decade’? Evidently, the ‘issue here, that NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia are dealing with now, has been a lack of private sector investment’.

The thing is, he’s talking through his hat. Since 2012, more than 90 per cent of investment in electricity generation in the eastern states has been in wind and solar. And, in per capita terms, Australia has the highest rate of renewable grid-scale generation in the world. It’s about ten times the world average.

The real problem in NSW (and the other eastern states) is that there has been no net investment in reliable, 24/7 generation, and that’s the key to explaining the crisis overwhelming the National Electricity Market.

Mind you, I should have been on to Perrottet well before he became premier. It was obvious that he was captured by investment bank types and the ‘miracle’ of modern financial management. He had been persuaded to set up the NSW Generations Fund to be run by a division of Treasury, TCorp.

Using the proceeds from the sale of the first tranche of WestConnex, the extremely well-paid staff of TCorp (average salary above $300,000 per year) were given free rein to bet taxpayer funds on the vagaries of the international equity and bond markets. Notwithstanding designating one of the sub-funds for the purpose of debt reduction, in point of fact the fund has been used to place some big financial bets, with the result being a great deal of red ink in 2022.

Perrottet was also the father (he is rather good at that role) of the highly dubious Transport Asset Holding Entity in which the assets and the liabilities of the public transport system were hived off into an off-budget fund, in part to disguise the amount of public debt being carried by the state.

I’m not sure too many readers will query my description of Perrottet as dumb, therefore. But when it comes to dumber, there are no prizes for guessing that Matt Kean, newly installed NSW treasurer (and still environment minister, groan) takes that title.

The fact that NSW now takes out the wooden spoon as worst fiscal performer, edging out the profligate and irresponsible states of Queensland and Victoria, is really all you need to know. Take a look at the figures and weep.

In 2020-21, net government debt in NSW was $37 billion. In this financial year, it will be $78 billion. That’s an increase of 110 per cent in two years! By 2025-26, net government debt in NSW is expected to reach $115 billion. (At least, the asset recycling program of former premier, Mike Baird, did actually involve paying down the debt even though it included some dodgy deals.)

Matt Kean’s first Budget is a spendathon, with the 2022-23 budget deficit coming in at over $11 billion. It’s not until 2024-25 that a very slim surplus is expected; I wouldn’t advise readers to hold their breath on that outcome. Where once we might have expected a centre-right government – pause here for unconstrained laughter – to be fiscally responsible, Mr Dumber is proposing to outspend Labor states and increase government debt at a much higher rate.

Be aware also that the NSW budget forecasts are based on implausibly optimistic economic assumptions, including the projection that the rate of unemployment will stay below four per cent for the next four years. No economic clouds for NSW, evidently.

But just in case you are unconvinced about my description of the person who is now NSW treasurer (he has already declared himself to be the most outstanding environment minister in the world) as dumber, let me end on an excerpt from his compelling budget commentary, including the exciting $5 billion Women’s Opportunity Statement.

‘Its timing is apt, if decades overdue. Last year, we saw an outpouring of frustration from women across the country, following the courageous advocacy of Brittany Higgins and Grace Tame. When women told these stories, I saw other women listening intently and nodding in agreement.’ (Move over, Greta: Brittany and Grace are now calling the shots on public policy.)

And here’s another example from the Keanster where the words speak for themselves. ‘We choose to give our children the best start in life so that they can not only reach their dreams but dream bigger in the first place. We choose to make sure that families can continue to buy a slice of the Australian dream. We choose to harness the wonders of modern science, and the power of our wind and sun. We choose to leave a better planet for future generations.’

Perhaps he imagines himself to be the next John F. Kennedy or Nelson Mandela – another wordsmith put on this earth to improve our lot. Or not?

These deadshits live on another planet.

Puberty can happen as early as 9 years of age. There was a famous case in Paraguay in 2015 of an 11-year old giving birth after her stepfather raped her when she was 10, as their laws were the same as Dobbs with no exceptions other than the health of the mother – the government determined that she was healthy enough to carry it to term, which ended up being true.

The facts of this Ohio case are not unprecedented. And they will now form the precedent for many more such cases.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Review – Disney’s War on Boys

I am a fan of The Critical Drinker and another bloke called Just Some Guy. They both panned it.

My BIL (whom I previously mentioned in connection with the shock of SCOTUS overturning Roe v Wade) said the Obi Wan Kenobi series was fantastic.

So I took a squiz at IMDB. It shows a rating of 7.1, but if you go to the reviews that supposedly make up the score. Mostly ones and twos, with corresponding levels of anger. Even the rare score above five is accompanied by such condemnation as to suggest the score ought to be lower.

I would guess that there are a lot of bot reviews much earlier on, but they seem to have given up. So, if you go to look at the reviews it is a wall of damnation.

Dot, I’ve been reflecting on your comments about Miss Piggy and her coterie of muppets.

Most people are followers, because it’s convenient and they don’t have to think too much. It has always been this way. Out of the thin “leadership” pool, you’re always going to get a useless narcissist with delusions of grandeur who has no problem at all in lording it over people who are either too needy or too nice to tell them to shove it. These types get their kicks seeing how far they can push and the great reward for them is that they can, indeed, push their friendship group a very long way.

In fact, the more outrageous the “pushing” the more the surrounding organism deflects and protects the leader.

My inclination is to dump the lot of them, hook line and sinker. Life is too short and too rewarding to waste your time and effort. Let them all work it out for themselves.

Outbreak shifts to Shenzhen and lockdown scares people/How long can China’s Zero-COVID policy last?

China Insights

This is Shenzhen, China. People are using various methods to help each other to escape from the sealed-off area. They climb over the high fence or escape through the narrow space at the bottom. Some have moved to other parts of the city, while others opt to return to their hometowns.
Municipal Party Secretary of Beijing, Cai Qi, a close ally of Xi Jinping, said on June 27th that Beijing would continue to focus on regular epidemic prevention and control “in the next five years” and would not wave in its support for “dynamic zero-Covid” policy.
This statement has terrified Beijing residents. It immediately spread on Chinese social media WeChat, where netizens highlighted the phrase “the next five years” and commented on it. One wrote, “This is even scarier than a ghost story. I was having my noon nap and it startled me awake.”

Hungary suffers a 20% decline in birth rates compared to the same period last year. That’s now plummeting birth rates recorded in the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, and Taiwan.

If this continues the evidence of vax injury via mass sterilization will be undeniable, but also devastating to those countries, as it will take another whole generation of the young children to grow up and then to build up the population again to rebuild civilizational decline.

Interesting that m0nty-fa seems to have decided that there is no political benefit in complaining about the administrative state being reined in, and pointed in the direction of proper behaviour (it is far too soon to say if they will take the hint, or have to be given stronger directions). He now seems to believe that abortion is the election winning tactic. Note, however, that he sticks with the “hard cases make bad law” approach, rather than offering comment on more controversial elements of abortion policy.

Late term abortions, sex selection abortions, and lifestyle preference abortions don’t get a mention. (Some singer was babbling on recently about she “just didn’t want a baby”. Maybe she should have kept her knees crossed, or used some form of contraception?)

These deadshits live on another planet.

Sir Robert Menzies was a strong leader, which is why he became PM in the wake of World War II.

But he wasn’t wise in the same way that Eric Blair (a.k.a. George Orwell) and Margaret Thatcher were wise in their understanding of human frailties.

Menzies did not consider for a minute that the party of classical Liberals he founded could be undermined from within by Marxists and carpetbaggers like Matt Kean who have reinterpreted liberalism as: whatever means are necessary to destroy the existing social order.

With the wisdom of hindsight, I think that Menzies’ contemporary, Sir Henry Bolte, was a better leader because he did not, for example, wax lyrical about his relationship with the Queen, kicked heads when necessary to maintain the rule of law and, as Victorian premier and a country farmer, he was much closer to the people over whom he governed.

The law needs to be changed then, m0nty. A little girl who is raped and falls pregnant should have that option, grisly and suboptimal as it is. It is not “health care” or a “right”, but for me at least falls into the same category as anencephaly and other dreadful but rare circumstances.

Great big hulking women who use abortion as a form of contraception are a different matter.

All old ground and discussed ad infinitum on other fora. I doubt whether there’s anything new any of us can add.

Correct. It is rubbish.

The ex-wife went off the Pill in early December 1987 as we were planning for our first Child. Around New Year time she was showing signs of not feeling so well/being queasy. I said to her that she was likely pregnant. Then in early January 1988, she popped into the Chemist and got a pregnancy self test kit. Bingo! She was pregnant and we were well pleased.

So, I reckon all up, around 4 weeks or so. Head Case’s ‘comment’ of 6 weeks is rubbish like many other of his utterances.

Unless they physically kill the child themselves, they’re not the murder. They could be charged with aiding and abetting, soliciting, and the like. The ‘doctor’ should be charged with murder.

And they practically never are. Why is that, given that the beliefs behind these laws are that murder is taking place?

Could it be that the objective here is not actually the prosecution of a crime, but the oppression of women and the creation of a permanent underclass of underpaid workers for capitalists to exploit?

Sportsbet odds on this are:
Frontrunners;
(a) totally fictitious. This is a strong prospect. The people spruiking the story can hide behind “confidentiality” making it essentially unverifiable/unfalsifiable. Interestingly, an internet search shows up absolutely nothing about the occurrence of the alleged rape, e.g. nothing about police in Ohio seeking public help in tracking down a suspect.
(b) probably the race favourite; stage-managed for effect. Any doctor who was in favour of abortion would have utilised the “serious danger to health” exception for a 10 year old girl. But that wouldn’t have given any opportunity for politicised grandstanding. Cue the trip to Indiana.
Rank outsider – totally true story. Even at long odds, tipsters suggest that punters should stay well clear.

That’s very interesting Tom. I’ve read that Ming’s two biggest mistakes were Canbra and accepting the Murray report. A tradie I was working with back in 2014 spoke very highly of Bolte and his role in the Bass Straight oil and gas project.

Some history of dueling.

Feature Politics And Pistols: Dueling In America

Find out more about dueling in the U.S.

Politics And Pistols: Dueling In America

Dueling started as a less violent way to solve disputes in the European Middle Ages. It was thought that God would pass judgment during a duel and save the “right” person.

Dueling continued as a popular means of establishing honor and settling differences for hundreds of years. It quickly established itself in the New Worldwhere, like many things, it reinvented itself.

While duels had long been fought over a woman’s hand, or to defend a man’s honor, in America, dueling took on a new importance: It was used to settle political differences. The duel that took place between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr is perhaps the most well-known, but it was not uncommon in politics.

Freedom of speech and politics were cornerstones of the new country. To besmirch a man because of his beliefs was not taken lightly. Political rivals such as senators, governors, mayors were challenged.

Principally duels were held to defend one’s honor, but the duelists were also trying to prove themselves as leaders—brave, determined and single-minded. A challenge could not be ignored, or a career would be destroyed.

Dueling was very much a public matter. Insults, and the challenges to duel that followed, traveled via newspaper editorials, word of mouth and plain old gossip. They also reached a widespread public with “postings” at street corners and taverns.

Few men could resist such a public challenge. Even Abraham Lincoln was called to duel: he had referred to one man as a “smelly, foolish liar” in a newspaper editorial. Lincoln chose swords over pistols, in the hope that his long arms would offer an advantage. He eventually apologized and avoided the duel altogether.

Newspapers at the time were factionalized and expressed very distinct viewpoints. Editors were constantly being challenged and were known to carry sidearms at all times—even in the office—in case an irate reader should wish to dispute an editorial.

By the time of the Broderick-Terry duel of 1859, slavery had become the new reason for dueling. Dueling had lost favor in the early 1800s in the North, but still remained the dispute-solving method of choice in the South, where social standing was a touchier subject.

Although 18 states had outlawed dueling by 1859, it was still often practiced in the South and the West. Dueling became less common in the years following the Civil War, with the collective public opinion perhaps soured by the amount of bloodshed during the conflict.

By the start of the 20th century, dueling laws were enforced and it became a thing of the past.

Why do Republicans not have women who have abortions charged with murder, if they believe as calli does that it is murder? Because they couldn’t get away with it.

Because abortions are generally legal? The SC decision did not repeal any actual legislation, it simply referred the matter to the several states, to pass (or continue with) relevant legislation. Murder is generally covered under state laws, not federal legislation.

A belief held by an individual is not a law. If it were, most of the population would be locked up for ignoring someone’s beliefs. Didn’t you learn about logical thought at University. Oh, sorry, Economics (failed) and j’ism don’t cover that.

The law needs to be changed then, m0nty. A little girl who is raped and falls pregnant should have that option, grisly and suboptimal as it is. It is not “health care” or a “right”, but for me at least falls into the same category as anencephaly and other dreadful but rare circumstances.

You’re making a lot of assumptions here with no facts to back it up.
Menarche can happen as early as 9, the girl was pregnant, so Menarche had occurred.
The circumstances are unknown, as are the girl’s wishes in the matter.

That is a tiresome and dumb argument. Any prosecution would have to show that the conception had occurred, and that the abortifacient was the cause of the child in utero’s death. These are only ever going to be established after about 4 weeks of any pregnancy for the obvious reasons, and abortifacients are normally used in the first couple of days. Consequently, the argument you’ve trotted out is disingenuous.

Over 50% of abortions are accomplished through medication, and that number is going up. Pills are approved for use up to 10 weeks, and are frequently used after that mark as well. Your assertion that abortifacients are “normally used in the first couple of days” is patently wrong, and it will only get more wrong as Dobbs hits and doctors run away from performing procedures.

If you’re going to criminalise people who perform abortions, you’re going to have to lock up women.

Defence Minister Richard Marles: ‘Time needed to probe shameful war crimes’
Finbar O’MallonAAP
Sun, 3 July 2022 8:50AM

Defence Minister Richard Marles is urging patience as investigators finalise their probe into “shameful” alleged war crimes by Australian troops in Afghanistan.

The acting prime minister said it was important to allow federal police to follow through on the evidence unearthed by former NSW judge Paul Brereton.

“It is dealing with a shameful episode in Australia’s military history,” Mr Marles told Sky News on Sunday.

“It matters in terms of who we are as a nation, who we are as a people, that our country deals with this itself.”

Asked when Australians can expect charges laid as a result of the inquiry, Mr Marles said he would commit to following through with the inquiry to its completion.

“There is going to be no stepping back in relation to this because it is fundamentally important process for how we are as a nation,” he said.

Mr Marles has previously suggested he won’t reverse former defence minister Peter Dutton’s decision not to strip defence personnel of meritorious unit citation, despite the original recommendation from defence leadership.

An Office of the Special Investigator is working with the Australian Federal Police to investigate allegations of criminal offences by ADF members in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2016.

Last year’s scathing Brereton inquiry unearthed credible evidence of war crimes by Australian special forces while serving in Afghanistan, including 39 murders.

This includes allegations soldiers tortured two prisoners with junior patrol members ordered to carry out executions.

In one of the most gruesome allegations, Australian soldiers cut the throats of two 14-year-old boys and dumped their bodies in a river because they believed they were Taliban sympathisers.

Is it an argument because a 10 year old would not be able to carry a baby to term? I don’t think I have heard anyone say it is preferable that mother and baby die.

Or is it a particularly manipulative image to argue that victims of rape should be entitled to abortion – it being unfair that a victim should live with the result of the crime – overlooking that instead another being must lose its life.

Boambee John:

Or, m0nty-fa, you could consider that someone, maybe, possibly, is (like you) trying to make political capital out of this matter?

That was my initial impression – fitted all the criteria – rape, under age, just over the time limit, horrible doctor who wouldn’t allow the abortion.
I smell a Dead Monty Rat.
And it wouldn’t be the first time.

Pills are approved for use up to 10 weeks, and are frequently used after that mark as well. Your assertion that abortifacients are “normally used in the first couple of days” is patently wrong,

Perhaps you could link to the statistical/medical data that confirm these assertions?

Or perhaps not.

I’m sick of the ‘but ten year old girl’ the abortion on demand til birth lot hide behind.
Most likely scenario is the pregnancy was only identified in the late second or third trimester and there weren’t any doctors in-state willing, even in those circumstances, to perform a late term abortion.
Iirc going out of state for a late term abortion in the US has been a thing for many years.

Urine Pregnancy test

In normal pregnancy, hCG can be detected in urine as early as 7 to 10 days after conception. Levels of hCG rise rapidly, frequently exceeding 100mIU/mL by the first missed menstrual period, and peaking at 100,000-200,000 mIU/mL about 10-12 weeks into pregnancy.

Read the Hill article ‘6 weeks and 3 days’.
What amazing accuracy.
Nevertheless out of state abortions are neither new or really noteworthy.
“In 2021, 465, or about 5.5% of the more than 8,400 abortions performed, were done on out-of-state residents, according to the Indiana Department of Health’s most recent terminated pregnancy report. More than half, 264, lived in Kentucky and 40 in Ohio.”

No it is not.

Ohio statute law allows for abortion where the health of the mother is in danger (as in a ten year old pregnant after being raped).

You have asserted the Ohio medical board regulations do not allow this, but you have never backed up this assertion without any evidence.

Monty is reduced to not being able to get an in state abortion as his latest ‘that’s terrible Muriel’.
As though US states have build impenetrable walls since last week.
In 2019 anticipating Roe v Wade being overturned six states considerably loosened abortion laws.
Sometimes it’s actually more convenient to go ‘interstate’.
And while Monty cries a bucket of tears about a girl having to be driven a few extra miles to get her baby syringed, his heart is made of stone for millions of much younger children.

Well, good to see the SES are on the ball in our neck of cyclonic South Head.

Three orange suited SES people (one a woman) climbing a big ladder have opened up the damaged skylight next door and are looking at ways to temporarily secure it as waterproof.

I haven’t yet spoken to the owners. Tell them I saw it happen, I called down to the SES.

For the homeless, there are loads of places around Sydney where they can get a good feed and help.

Actually, there aren’t. Depends where you are located and if you wish to spend money on fares.
Opening hours can be uncertain. And mobile units can be uncertain in their times too. You also have to be fairly well locked into the homeless ‘system’ to even know about half of these places.
I haven’t deserved all of my luck, so I think I can spread a bit about. People making a living by begging is humiliating for them, and sometimes the best they can do. I often gift a gold coin or two.

Who am I to judge?

Better co-ordinated services would help to solve some, but not all, of this misery.

It’s an appealing thought to imagine Bolte turning up, like Marley’s ghost, at the foot of Matthew Guy’s bed, although he wouldn’t bother with all that rattling of chains and so forth.

No, being a straightforward sort, he’d beat the useless bugger black and blue and then depart after emptying the chamber pot on Groundhog Day’s head.

No worries about the Ectoplasm Police taking action, either, as all who recall how Bolte ran off the road when pissed as 40 men and was charged with DWI. Yet somehow, beyond explanation, the charge sheet simply vanished! Unlike the Dan Andrews variety of corruption, that was a one-off, entirely excusable and quite endearing.
