Apropos earlier comment re Alex on Truss and Conservatives, Alex said the suspicion that the fix was in arose because this was all unravelling while Kwarteng was away in Washington. What a shambles.
And I’m not sure it recovers. German fertility rate is almost bad as Italy and Japan.
Italy 1.27 births per woman (2019) 47.3
Germany 1.54 births per woman 46
Japan 1.36 births per woman (2019) median age 49
Germany isn’t going to race back from this slump. The population isn’t young and adaptable.
Ironically for nations of old geezers they ought to be the least concerned about gerbil warming.

I’m certain that there are definite shenanagins afoot. It’s clear, after the two calls Ive made, that the call centre responders are simply reading responses from a script. They were offering identical platitudes to ‘acknowledge’ my concerns and defuse the situation but did not once respond to my concerns in any reasonable way. Simply regurgitated the company line. It was infuriating.

JC – Zelensky has painted himself into a corner, in part on the back of US/EU assurances they will support Ukraine by pledging that he won’t negotiate with Russia; that all Ukraine must be free of Russian soldiers, forever; guarantee of Ukraine sovereignty over all territory including the Donbass and Crimea; guaranteed ongoing reparations beyond the transfer of frozen Russian fx to Ukraine (about $US300Bn), and so on. Many world leaders are cheering him on (esp. Biden) and he has ‘rock star’ status and access to forums where he wouldn’t normally get in the door.
Everything forward is ‘crystal ball gazing’ but we all know for certain that the world, economically at least, is in for a very rocky time for at least the next 12-24 months and easily more. This winter in Europe will be brutal and the economic shocks are amplified. It’s public record that people are beginning to protest in France and Germany over rising costs, lack of energy and polls in Germany suggest that 50% of Germans think the sanctions are hurting Germany far more than they are hurting Russia. Who will crack first? Dunno, but under Russian law, Putin can remain in office until 2028. Can Europe outlast him? And even if they can, who comes next?

‘Girt’ hurts everyone.
Girt hurts, love scars
Girt wounds and marks
Any heart
Not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Girt is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Girt hurts
Ooh, ooh, Girt hurts
I’m young, I know, but even so
I know a thing or two
I learned from you
I really learned a lot, really learned a lot
Girt is like a flame
It burns you when it’s hot
Girt hurts
Ooh, ooh, girt hurts
Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
They’re not foolin’ me
I know it isn’t true
I know it isn’t true
Girt is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Girt hurts
Ooh, ooh, girt hurts
Ooh, ooh, girt hurts
I know it isn’t true
I know it isn’t true
Girt is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Girt hurts
Ooh, ooh, girt hurts
Ooh, ooh, girt hurts …

Does anyone else see the irony here?
For what it’s worth, one of the local schoolchildren was asked if they knew what “National Sorry Day”
was about.
“Yes – that’s when the Aboriginal kids say “Sorry” for beating us up after school, and stealing our bikes…”

As part of the USAAF/RAF disassembling of the German production effort, bearings were changed in type for tank turrets. Initially ball bearings were used but after the raids and the damage done, they were changed to roller bearings.
So my question is this – why not use roller bearings in the first place? Surely a roller bearing has greater surface area to enable heavy loads to turn?
There may be a very simple reason for this, but my limited knowledge of machining and engineering is failing me.
An interesting paper on Sweden, SKF and bearings for Nazi Germany:
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/03585522.1975.10407803
why not use roller bearings in the first place? Surely a roller bearing has greater surface area to enable heavy loads to turn?
Ball bearings can handle both axial and radial loads. To achieve the same with a roller bearing arrangement can be difficult. The normal way this is done is to have rollers where the length is the same as the diameter and they are fed into the race in alternating orientations.
Given the ring diameter on the tanks, the load bearing capacity was probably not the limiting factor, so balls were probably initially selected because they were easier to assemble. A bit of googling shows that most German tanks used different methods to space out the balls, this seems to support the idea that there was no particular problem with ball bearings being able to support the loads.
Apparently you can buy old German tank turret balls:

I mean, four words for you: Four Seasons Total Landscaping. The writing in this movie is terrible. The characters are not believable, the relationships are ridiculous, the dialogue is insane gibberish.
If it was an actual movie it would have been canned at the concept stage.
Just as the “gay” Son of Superman movies was? Oh, sorry, it went ahead to be produced.

We have just arrived in the Mariott at LAX and viewing Trumps’ election speech with a rum and coke (me) and a beer (Hairy) after a long trip with a change in Atlanta. We are impressed. I told you he was the only candidate and the real hope, says Hairy, and I have to agree with him at the moment. Two years though, a lot can happen, but right now Trump is trumps. Hairy wins.
