AlphaFold’s new rival? Meta AI predicts shape of 600 million proteins
Microbial molecules from soil, seawater and human bodies are among the planet’s least understood.
When London-based artificial-intelligence (AI) company DeepMind unveiled predicted structures for some 220 million proteins this year, the trove covered nearly every protein from known organisms in DNA databases. Now, another tech giant is filling in the ‘dark matter’ of the protein universe.

Researchers at Meta (formerly Facebook, headquartered in Menlo Park, California) have used AI to predict the structures of some 600 million proteins from bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that haven’t been characterized.

Royal Australian Navy launches huge recruitment drive in bid to encourage young people to join Defence Force
Caitlin Law-DavisThe West Australian
Fri, 4 November 2022 6:36PM

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has officially kicked off one of its largest recruitment drives in history, offering paid work experience for people across the country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has created opportunities to entice younger people to join their workforce after research showed over 25 per cent of Gen Zs would be interested in a submariner career.

However the research also found that generation had the lowest understanding of what the job actually entails – which led to the RAN creating live-in, realistic experiences and all-expenses-paid trips for interested participants.

Hopefully, and for once in their miserable kipper-eating soap-dodging lives the Poms can stop moaning and get over the line against the Vedda people tomorrow.

Part of me wants this.
But another part wants the Alintastralian rabble to go through to cop a bigger humiliation in the semi final.

Photos Show China’s Massive Military Buildup in South China Sea
Chinese leader Xi Jinping promised the US that China wouldn’t militarize the South China Sea. In good communist fashion, he did just that–on islands all over the South China Sea. In this episode of China Uncensored, we show photos of what China has done to militarize disputed islands in the South China Sea, how China might use these new military bases, and what kinds of infrastructure and weaponry they appear to have.

The fact that hunter gatherers are known to have high carb intake contradicts the claim.

no it doesn’t. read what you wrote yourself. excess carbs. you can consume carbs all you like so long as you burn them up. note how hunter gatherers are highly active. sedentary people should stick to low carb to be safe.

Athletes who for example burn 4000 calories a day can safely consume proportional amounts of carbs.

That’s what I wrote. I stated the problems is excess carbs. You stated:

and causes metabolic syndrome and diabetes

in relation to the claim that we need very little carbs\sugars. You didn’t qualify the claim by reference to excess carbs.

The optimal diet for everyone argument is nonsense. Individual variation matters. The focus on high fat\protein diets is as misguided as the focus on carbs as a principal energy source. Lipid peroxidation is as dangerous as AGE products.

I stupidly perhaps went and had a look at Skah here is Aus…

A full on program of show wonderful the covid vaccines are, and lots of supportive stuff… just full on about vaccines… and lies, …and more lies…

Imagine my shock (to steal from Paul Joseph Watson) to find the show was sponsored by …. Pfizer.

Any wonder why skah is losing viewers.

It is awful, but more typical.

The ascendency of Trump is closing, what is the mechanism?

Who knows?
But it will have to be something big?
I think it will happen on the night of the mid-terms.
Something really, really big will be exposed.
And it will be undeniable.

Heard several times today top VIC traffic cop getting emotional over the hit run death of a 60 something man earlier. ‘You wouldn’t leave a dog like that’ and so on. ‘Couldn’t understand how anyone could do that.’

There have been a number of these. Drivers collecting a pedestrian and high tailing it away from the scene. Perhaps somebody need to tell that cop that in some cultures the rights of car drivers and their vehicles outweigh pedestrians every time.

4 Corners was rather pleased about Australia being out of range for China. We can have as many US bombers as we like at Sindal and they can’t touch us.

Beijing perhaps. What about the S China Sea ? Those bases not a touch close to Australia ?

Subcontinental Uberist dragged his bike along the side of my vehicle while I was parked.

Just headed on his way without turning back to check for any damage.

Most surprised when I called him back and told him to take more care with other peoples property. No sign of any comprehension in his eyes that he did anything wrong, or was in any way culpable for damage.

No wonder his own country is a shithole, and ours is becoming one.

At the golf club at the weekend there was an unfortunate accident. Two ladies were enjoying a quiet game and had just teed off when one of the ladies was hit in the head with a wayward golf ball, somewhere between the first and second tee. An ambulance was called and, when the paramedic eventually arrived, he asked what had happened. The story was related to him and he asked “Where was she hit?” “Between the first and second hole” came the answer. The paramedic replied “Well, it’s not going to leave much room for a bandage!”

When are these nancy boys going to wake up to the fact that an overly emotional copper doesn’t look ‘human’ when he emotes over a road accident victim like the media minders have told him, it makes him look weak and incapable of doing the tough parts of his job?
FFS, ‘top Victorian Traffic cop’, it’s not about you – it’s about the poor bastard who got hit.

flyingduk says:

Our brains principally rely on sugar.
1) We used to think that, but there is increasing evidence that brain can burn ketones.

https://youtu.be/qSAiVROezRs

2) So what?… we are quite capable of making as much glucose as we need using raw materials from fat and protein metabolism. My point is that we are evolved to consume *very little* carbohydrate (indeed, we can live quite healthily without consuming any carbs at all), yet the modern diet floods our bloodstream with sugar, much more than is needed, and the excess is turned into fat.

I for one found my mental acuity and stamina *markedly* increased when I went off the carbs.

I’m on Day 8 of a high protein, low carb diet. Yes, I’ve lost almost half a kilo a day. But I won’t pretend it’s easy.

I’m positive I’d lose a hell of a lot more if I gave up alcohol. But fuckit! I’m 72 and NOT giving up my couple of glasses of white wine at night!
