A reader’s [allegedly] response to/review of, Dr. Kevin Donelly’s Cancel Culture And The Left’s Long March

I read this purely so that I could get some insight into the state of Australia’s far-right, and I can comfortably say that there is very little of substance to be found here. This charmless, misguided discourse is about as engaging as a brick, and half as informative. To call this literature would be an insult to kindergarteners all over the world, who undoubtedly apply more effort to learning the alphabet than Kevin Donnelly has exerted over the course of his entire political career. This book poses a greater threat to brain cells than crystal methamphetamine, and is statistically more likely to cause haemorrhaging than blunt force trauma. On a more serious note, this book is rife with logical inconsistencies and unsubstantiated claims, underlined by very thinly veiled prejudice, particularly against the LGBTQ+ community. The concept of cancel culture in and of itself is something I am extremely critical of, particularly for it’s tendency towards extremism and a pervasive “guilty until proven innocent” mentality. Bearing that in mind, I’m unsure that an accurate definition or example of cancel culture is ever even given in this book. It’s main purpose in this text is to act as a political “straw man” with which the featured writers can argue against without acknowledging any opposition. By this logic any valid criticisms directed at the political far right can simply be brushed off as ‘cancel culture’ simply because critics seek discourse or even simple accountability. This is the political equivalent of a child hitting their younger sibling, and then throwing a tantrum when they get hit back. All in all, this book and the featured essayists are ineffectual, and very clearly out of touch. The insensitive handling of sensitive topics demonstrates a clear lack of human empathy, and the incessant demonisation of the LGBTQ+ community is indicative of a deep running distaste for those who don’t conform. If this is the best fight Australia’s far right can put up, then I suspect the “Left’s Long March” to victory might not be quite as long as you anticipate, Mr Donnelly.

I’m going back to the days when the Australian Defence Forces were comprised of a gang of mildly alcoholic,
I understand in recent years when Chynah sent its ship down around Aus with its listening sensors to our exercises and defence systems our military sent a chopper out with a pallet of beer…which was then set on the deck of the Chynah ship. Message being ‘yes we know u r there, yes we also do the same to you, but since we r generally nice folk, have a beer on us’. Apparently this is what we have done and do from time to time.

I read a cricket journo before the Test Championship saying that Warner wanted a swansong summer, culminating in his last match at the SCG.

He’s already announced it.
He thinks by saying it that he has cornered the selectors. He thinks that they wouldn’t dare drop him as that would be akin to shooting Bambi.
I might be wrong.
He might get a rapturous send off at the SCG. But every cricket fan I talk to hates him with a passion.
In terms of misjudging the public mood, he and his missus are the Nicholae and Elena Ceausescu of Australian cricket.

Those in certain circles will advise that Warner is hated by his teammates even more than the public.

Look at the over-representation of Gray-Nicolls bats used by the current lot. Gray-Nick pulled Warner’s sponsorship after Sandpapergate – and as a consequence (apparently) quite a few of the players dropped their own brands and went looking for Gray-Nicolls. Just as a quiet ‘f*ck you, Dave’.

she understands why Trump still has such a huge following among the hollowed out communities, towns and cities that once comprised America’s industrial rust belt, how these people over the last two decades have been done over, sold out by globalism, free trade, corporatism, big pharma and so on. And last night, talking to Morrow, Batya said something interesting about DeSantis, that whilst he’s solid on confronting progressive woke and he’s got a good track record dealing with progressive woek, he hasn’t confronted the woke in his own party, the GOP establishment

We flopped in front of James Morrow’s show on replay tonight, Cassie, and also found her comments outlined above insightful. Hairy adds that De Santis can’t really oppose the Republican swamp because he is bound to them for future funding of his Presidential run.

As Hairy is a no-one but Trump supporter, he sees that as making De Santis a poor Presidential choice. I don’t, because I think De Santis can re-run Trump’s 2016-20 policy platform to a large extent and most likely would. It’s the way to electoral success anyway. I was greatly impressed with Trump’s New Jersey speech after his recent Court appearance, he is so on top of it all and explains it all very clearly. Obviously he could still be electable. So as ever, I’m torn, because of the uncertainty re Biden. I doubt Biden will run, and in that case the Dems will have someone younger than Trump, and that will matter a lot.

Read with interest the discussion about raw garlic last night.

While I don’t believe for a moment that it cures cancer or anything else so dramatic, I can attest that it worked for me in clearing up a nasty outbreak of large facial acne-type cysts when I was in my 20s. It happened out of the blue when I was on a ship travelling between Sydney and Acapulco.

I wangled some garlic cloves from a friendly Italian kitchen worker, and swallowed one raw (cut in half, washed down with lots of water) morning and night. After three or four days, the cysts were gonski. It was like magic.

I presume that they were caused by some sort of infection, and it seems likely that the anti bacterial properties often claimed for raw garlic kicked in to great effect on this occasion.
I’d previously had the odd single cyst on my face, and they typically had a life cycle of a couple of weeks, so this was a very impressive result.

Biden – Admits He is a Puppet

Jo(ke) Biden – “We have plans to build a railway line all the way across the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean………………….”. What Fruit Loop.

COMMENT: You are just anti-Democrat and always against Biden.

WU

REPLY: Sorry, you are so biased you cannot look objectively at anything. When Biden utters the phrase “I’m deviating from the script, and I going to get in trouble” don’t you understand that someone is scolding him if he speaks his own mind? I’m sorry. That is irrefutable evidence that he is nothing more than a puppet.

You obviously do not care who is really calling the shots. So far, these people behind the curtain using Biden have destroyed the world economy by corrupting SWIFT, the sanctions on Russia have only divided the world economy ending globalism. Then they have the audacity to threaten China that if they supply arms to Russia there will be sanctions against them. All of this is when the US is supplying arms to Ukraine. They have transformed the USA from the policeman of the world to the arrogant world dictator.

There was the One China policy and the Biden administration has abandoned decades of peace ensuring now that China has no choice but to invade Taiwan or appear subservient to the United States. Then these people have NATO expanding opening in Japan to spread their version of world peace by bombing the hell out anyone they dislike exercising their dictatorial power. NATO is now the greatest threat to Europe. The only country that sees this is France. NATO will destroy all of Europe.

So feel free to vote for Biden if you are over 70 and have no family members then you will not be drafted which may go up to 65 years old this time and include girls. Otherwise, a vote for Biden will be a vote to send your children or grandchildren to die on some foreign battlefield all for the glory of the NEOCONS. The United States is in the midst of a coup. The NEOCONS are in full control – their dream has come true. A vote for Biden is a vote for the NEOCONS. Vote for RFK, Jr. but not Biden if you care about your country. Biden is the patsy. He is not making these decisions.

You have no idea how this works. For nearly 50 years, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) amassed secret files on America’s most prominent figures. He then used those files to blackmail and smear presidents and politicians. You did what he ORDERED or he would use the dirt on you to end your career or imprison you as they are doing to Trump right now. The NEOCONS have done that to Biden and his family. He does what he is told – OR ELSE!”

Noted barrel-stuffer David Penberthy in the Tele, and apropos of both the Brih-nee Eclair Queen and Thorpe/Van imbrolglios as symptoms of current political idiocy:

The entire affair has been a disgusting indulgence at the expense of a nation that right now needs politicians on both sides to be focussed solely on our needs.

By expense, I also mean expense in the literal sense.

We all picked up the tab for salaries, flights, meals, drinks and accommodation to send 150-odd MPs and 72 Senators to Canberra so they could serve up this s–t.

They served it up in the midst of 12 consecutive interest rate hikes, near hyper inflation, the threat of recession, and with power bills increasing this very week by as much as 40 per cent.

They served it up while the rest of us were opening letters from AGL and the ANZ and our local council about new electricity prices, the new variable loan rate and increased quarterly council rates.

The intricacies and intrigues of the case that started this all have become nothing more than a who-knew-what-when parlour game for the politically obsessed.

Boom. Uptick.

“Does the same apply to the Labor Party?”

The standards that are applied to the Liberals and Nationals are never applied to Labor and the Greens. Example – Bill Shorten.

Remember that infamous picture of the woman who is now Penbethy’s wife, what was her name? I forget. In parliament, back in 2011 or whatever, she was pictured in parliament sexily walking past various male Labor slugs, including Billy Boy Shorten. They were all sitting there with their tongues hanging out, like a group of horny fifteen year old school boys with their little dicks hanging out masturbating to pornhub. Very sleazy and very inappropriate. Imagine if that had been a Liberal or National woman walking past a group of Liberal and National males with their tongues hanging out. The hypocrisy is rampant but the Liberals have brought this on themselves, they bought into the gaslighting bullshit that is the “Liberals have a women problem”….they lapped it up. You reap what you sow.

Once another comment arrives, page 1 becomes https://newcatallaxy.blog/2023/06/17/open-thread-weekend-17-june-2023/comment-page-1/ and the second page becomes https://newcatallaxy.blog/2023/06/17/open-thread-weekend-17-june-2023/ presumably so that clicking on the sidebar takes you to the latest page.

Piers Akerman:

Brittany Higgins, Lidia Thorpe and Amanda Stoker – three women who have made allegations of sexual abuse, ranging from rape to groping, occurring in Parliament House.

While all the claims are serious, what separates these women are their responses to the alleged abuse.

Former parliamentary staffer Higgins, we know now, did not report her alleged assault to the police – or even parliamentary authorities – at the first possible occasion. This fact came out during the abandoned trial of the man she accused of rape, co-worker Bruce Lehrmann.

Instead, she shared her thoughts about her claims with friends in the first instance, then other contacts and, shortly after, with media personalities Lisa Wilkinson and Peter FitzSimons.

Her go-to political champions were senators Katy Gallagher and Penny Wong. Further, after gaming the political and publicity scenarios, including conversations about a book deal, she finally lodged an official complaint after her interview with Channel 10’s The Project received mass publicity.

Nonetheless, Labor, which did not hold back in weaponising her claims during the torrid election campaign against the Morrison Liberal government, agreed to a monetary settlement when it took office.

Liberals – including her ex-boss, former defence industry minister Linda Reynolds and another senator, Michaelia Cash – were precluded from providing input into the claims negotiations.

Senator Thorpe, who has perceived problems following accepted parliamentary protocols, offering a bastardised version of the oath of allegiance and standing to take the oath with a raised clenched fist, also failed to follow the established conventions regarding the reporting of allegations of sexual abuse.

After an outburst in the Senate with accusations against Victorian Liberal senator David Van, the independent activist first withdrew her remarks and then later repeated them. Van was also accused by Stoker, a former senator, of twice touching her bottom, which she reported to a colleague, and conferred with Van about in the company of others, all on the record.

Satisfied with the mediation process and securing a promise that such activity would not reoccur, Stoker moved on.

When another allegation was made to Opposition Leader Peter Dutton late Thursday, he immediately suspended Van from the Liberals’ partyroom, pending an investigation. After a further allegation surfaced on Friday, he suggested Van quit.

Van has, for his part, denied wrongdoing, and declared that his “good reputation has been wantonly savaged”.

There is another group of women who have, in the past, made much of their concerns about women’s safety – the teals, who enjoyed adoring publicity from well-heeled feminist sympathisers during the election campaign.

Searches failed to reveal any position taken by their more prominent members during the current brouhaha.

Perhaps that’s because Labor’s Gallagher and Wong, two of the three “mean girls” named by late senator Kimberley Kitching, have been damaged after making unsubstantiated claims against Reynolds.

After initially denying they had been made aware of the Higgins’ matter, they now acknowledge they did know of the allegations when they attacked Reynolds during an estimates hearing.

Despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s repeated claims, Labor’s hands are not clean.

They haven’t protected women – if they are Liberals – and the silence of the teals speaks volumes about their empty claim to uphold integrity.

Whether in or out of parliament, it should be obvious to all that the first port of call for any sexual abuse complainant must be the police.

As Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce stressed on Thursday: “Allegations are serious, some are dumb and dangerous, but what you’ve got to do is take these to police.”

Justice should be the goal, not political vendettas, if the public is to trust politicians.

Nationals leader David Littleproud said he was shocked by the allegations made against Senator Van.

“I appreciate Senator Van wants to have a presumption of innocence, but I also appreciate the fact that Peter Dutton has the right to protect the Liberal Party and to undertake his own investigation,” he told Nine’s Today program on Sunday.

“If his behaviour doesn’t meet the standards of the Liberal party, then (Peter Dutton) has every right to remove Senator Van from his party room, and the Liberal Party has every right to accept his resignation.”

Mr Littleproud hit out at Senator Van’s decision to remain in parliament on the cross bench.

“While the senator can stay, under the law, really, he wasn’t elected on his own volition,” he said.

“He was elected on the Liberal Party. He wants to remove himself from the Liberal party, and then he should probably also remove himself from the Senate.”

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have been safely giving birth on country for more than 60,000 years.

And there’s a growing body of evidence that when cultural safety is embedded into care for expectant mums and new bubs they are healthier and much more likely to thrive.

The president of the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives Marni Tuala, a Bundjalung woman, says Birthing on Country is the optimal model of care for pregnant First Nations women.

“What that means – and I think there is some confusion around what is Birthing on Country – is being cared for throughout your pregnancy journey by a midwife who is known to you in ways that meet your cultural needs,” she says.

“Birthing on Country is the way forward for our women and our families, and having that led by Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal nurses and midwives is the best way to achieve that.”……

What’s your point? Women vote more for the ALP and Greens combined by a roughly similar margin. It’s not the Guardian, it was the Australian Institute.

For the Senate:

Liberal/National Coalition 5,148,028 34.24%
Labor 4,525,598 30.09 %
Greens 1,903,403 12.66 %

The real shit shocker is that 14% of Queenslanders reported they vote for the Greens, their actual vote was 12.39%, which was considerably less than reported and below the national average. So these exit polls will have a significant margin of error.

The polls are subject to bias, underreporting and self-selection bias errors.

As to Fatmuricans eating 80+ grams a day of omega-six fatty acids, that would require eating at least five large McDonalds french fries a day, every day of your life, for every single living Fatmurican.

This is simply not possible.

That rodent model discussed last night was absurd. Extrapolated to humans, 19% of calories, in an isocaloric experiment, to be almost exclusively omega 6 fatty acid fats, resulting in a 50 lb weight gain from 195 lb in 7.5 months, okay, where would you be in six years’ time? Would a man initially weighing 195 lbs in six years’ time weigh 675 lbs, purely because of omega 6 fatty acids?

There was a reason old mate didn’t discuss biochemistry because his idea is bunk. He has some good reasons to moderate omega 6 consumption and ensure ADEK vitamin consumption, but blaming ALL weight gain, cancer and metabolic syndrome on omega 6 fatty acids is absurd.

Like I said if you eat milk, butter, meat/fish otherwise, there’s no worry about using a little sunflower or canola oil when you cook your steak, salmon fillet or stir-fried vegetables. Eating 100 g a day of soybean oil in processed foods full of added sugar, starch, fructose and salt in a massively over-calorie, low-micronutrient, low protein, low omega 3 FA diet certainly would be a problem.

There is something wrong with things when it is enough for a woman to publicly make claims of being harassed or molested without any further obligation on their part for at least some sort of corroboration even in the form of a police report or complaint to their employers HR, or similar.

No other accusation is levelled so lightly. If some politician claimed they had been threatened or attacked by an opponent we would want a bit more than their word.

But there is a blindness of sorts when it comes to ladies, and an instant halo of guilt surrounds the accused, where a sexual hue is layered on.

It does not matter how preposterous Thorpe’s history is, how often we laugh at her transports of self-righteousness, we must suddenly accept her claims when she prefaces them with the word ‘sex’.

But over the past few decades of movies and TV shows have instilled the assumption that women are are first victimised in the first instance but then repeatedly in the press, in the courts, and all those imagined bastions of masculinity (clubs, board rooms, locker rooms etc.)

No one wants to be one of those guys. No man wants to be seen doubting the word of a woman because that means he approves of the abuse of women.

Far from men automatically flying to the defence of other men, what we see is how readily they fly to the defence of women and willingly injure other men.

Daily Telegraph with Cydonee Mardon reporting:

The brother of a three-year-old girl who went missing from a Wollongong beach 53 years ago is appealing to the NSW Attorney-General to re-examine the case.

Ricki Nash, who has devoted his life to finding out what happened to his little sister Cheryl Grimmer, confirmed his family had sent a letter to Michael Daley asking him to “look again” at a judge’s decision to throw out the confession of a man who allegedly admitted to the 1971 abduction and murder.

Little Cheryl vanished from Fairy Meadow beach in 1970.

She was last seen in showers near the beach, where she had spent the afternoon with her mother, Ricki and two other older brothers.

Witnesses at the time reported seeing an unknown male carrying a child wrapped in a towel towards the beach car park.

Despite a huge police search no trace of her has ever been found, but a 2011 inquest concluded she had died.

Years later former NSW detective Frank Sanvitale took charge of the cold case and, after months of trawling through old case files, statements, newspaper clippings and other evidence, he and his partner Damien Loone found a confession in one of the dusty boxes.

They built a case and arrested a suspect in 2017.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with murder and extradited from Victoria.

Just as he was due to stand trial, the NSW Supreme Court found the confession he made when he was 17 years old during a police interview in 1971 was inadmissable.

Justice Robert Hulme formed the view that admitting the confession into evidence would be unfair as the accused was more vulnerable than an average 17-year-old.

Having an adult or legal representative present during his interview may have gone a long way towards overcoming the unfairness, he found.

It took just 90 minutes for the Director of Public Prosecutions to decide not to appeal a judge’s decision to exclude a murder confession — something Mr Sanvitale and Mr Nash have never come to terms with.

This week, in a letter to Mr Daley, the family argued the details in the confession were “corroborated during a 2016-17 reinvestigation” and called on the Attorney-General to allow an application to the NSW Supreme Court for a fresh inquest.

They also called for the lifting of media restrictions preventing the previous suspect’s name being published to prompt other possible witnesses to come forward.

Police have refused to confirm whether the man remains a suspect.

Previous Attorney-General Mark Speakman described the collapse of the 2019 trial as the “end of the road” in one of Australia’s most high-profile mysteries.

But Mr Nash and his family refuse to give up hope.

“I hope you can see your way to intervening in this case to bring some kind of closure to Cheryl’s brothers after 53 years of torture,” they pleaded.

“The family will not stop in its pursuit of justice and the media spotlight on this case is not going to go away. Cheryl’s Voice will be heard.”

A spokesman for the Attorney-General confirmed that he had received a letter from the Grimmer family and said he had asked the Department of Communities and Justice to review it.

What a horrible shitshow. So a confession to the abduction was not allowed because of ‘unfairness’ and ‘vulnerability’ because of the accused age at the time. Tell me, is it fair that this girl met her maker and her family go through 53 years of heartache? End of the road says Speakman. Just awful.

It was mentioned that James Ashby might be Pauline Hanson’s chosen succesor.

I don’t think think he would have much support. Malcolm Roberts is a very hard working Senator who is good in Senate estimates but would One Nation survive without Pauline Hanson?

They were part of the community and I think it made them grounded.

My mother was fond of a story where she was in the local bakery with my sister who was probably 14 or 15. My sister excitedly pointed to another customer to say that he was her favourite player in the local team (Sutherland-Cronulla Sharks).

My mother encouraged her to go say hello. After a few moments of polite chatter he raced out to his tradesman’s ute and came back in with a publicity photograph which he autographed on the spot.

My sister was stoked.

An observation on the manipulative use of language.

Browsing the Week in Pictures, I happened upon mention of the name Duane Owens, who was apparently executed recently in the U.S.

Unadvisedly, I searched for his name online, then decided not subject myself to any further details.

What I did note, by only browsing the first few sentences of each search result, was a lack of adjectives describing this vermin’s crimes.*

While conservatives are routinely described as radical, extremist, controversial, etc., there seemed a remarkable neutrality in referring to a [I’m not going to refer to him as a man], who stabbed (18 times) a 14 year old and raped her corpse, and bludgeoned to death with a hammer another woman.

His crimes were simply labelled ‘killings’ or plain ‘murder’ (nothing to see here, move along), and some reports emphasized the length of time he had spent on death row, intimating he was the real victim.

The ACLU [according to the comment in WiP] lamented Owens’ apparent torture by the state, and referred to him as a her.

The predators no longer hide in the shadows. They now stand naked and unafraid on our screens – pixels of malevolence – taunting us.

*Maybe I missed the outrage by not delving further. Maybe he always declared his innocence, I don’t know. I chose not to subject my fragile mental state to such trauma.

There’s a big problem in the West, and that’s the complete capture of the media, making 90% of the media partisan, always spruiking for the left and always covering up for the left, be it over sexual scandals, Covid, integrity and so on. I can guarantee you that if that Bitch Gallagher was a Liberal, she would have already resigned, thanks to the MSM furore.

It’s why I shed no tears for Andrew Pwobyn, who has himself directly contributed to this partisanship.

Indigenous leaders elected for Victorian treaty talks
Callum GoddeAAP
Sun, 18 June 2023 7:59AM

Twenty-two leaders have been elected to represent Indigenous Victorians in long-awaited treaty negotiations with the state government.

Treaty election results have been tallied for the next iteration of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, a democratic body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service chief executive Nerita Waight, former Department of Premier and Cabinet staffer Barry Firebrace-Briggs and Alister Thorpe – a cousin of independent senator Lidia Thorpe – were among 10 people elected to represent the metro region.

Three candidates were picked for each of the other four regions across the state.

Outgoing assembly co-chair Marcus Stewart said the elections were a watershed moment for the decolonisation of Victoria.

“This is self-determination in action. First Peoples in Victoria have spoken,” the Nira illim bulluk man said.

“These are the people who will represent us mob proudly and will get treaty done. It’s a big honour, but also a big responsibility.”

He urged Indigenous Victorians to get behind the new assembly members ahead of statewide treaty negotiations beginning later this year.

“Nothing is off the table, so we need to push hard together,” he said.

The newly-elected assembly will also help traditional owner groups in Victoria to start negotiating individual treaties in their areas.

VICTORIAN TREATY ELECTION RESULTS:

* Metro

– Barry Firebrace-Briggs, Yorta Yorta, Ulupna

– Indi Clarke, Wemba Wemba, Mutti Mutti, Boon Wurrung, Trawlwoolway and Lardil

Muddy – Yep. The torture in this case was not giving him tens of thousands of dollars worth of free elective plastic surgery.

The ACLU Is Mad at Florida for What They Did Not Provide to Death Row Prisoner (17 Jun)

Using female pronouns to refer to Duane Owen, a convicted murderer and rapist, the ACLU said by not providing “gender-affirming care” it resulted in “enormous suffering and violating her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment for the more than 30 years she was in state custody.”

Enormous suffering eh? Maybe the ACLU could consider the suffering of his victims.

And what bothers me about the stupid Liberals is that even now, if given evidence a Labor figure had allegedly raped someone, the Liberals would still refuse to make political capital out of it, because they still foolishly believe in Queensberry Rules.

As an aside, we have no idea why Sleazy’s long marriage to Carmel failed. I don’t really want to know, his marriage failure is the least problematic of his many faults, but imagine if this was Dutton or Morrison? The plain truth is that the MSM and the left have tried to dig up much schmutz on Dutton, and failed. The double standards here are horrendous. In fact, I’m old enough to remember Channel Nine’s nasty interview with Hewson’s first wife back in 1993. However, they’ve never been particularly interested in Keating’s private life, and I can assure everyone here, his private life would make interesting and salacious reading.

I remember reading about Trump in early 2016. I wasn’t really a Trump fan until late that year. Trump said that one of the reasons he chose to run is that, apart from the fact that he could clearly see that the eight years of the Magic Negro had almost destroyed America and America’s prestige, he also said how he was fed up with the way GOP candidates, such as the Mormon Romney and McCain were always bashed, ridiculed, smeared and lied about by the progressive MSM media, and they just sit there like dummies and say and do nothing in return. So, Trump said that he’ll throw it back and throw it back he did. The days of gentlemanly politics are dead. The sexual scandals and shenanigans that go on in the Liberals and Nationals, be it bottom pinching or whatever, are NOTHING compared to what goes on in Labor and the Greens.

A good Sunday read:
An Excellent View of Oblivion: On Italy’s Vanishing Towns
Dominic Smith Considers Desertion, Both Physical and Emotional

A taste:

When I think of our own comeback, it reminds me a lot of Tocco Caudio or Balestrino, where the people fled to settle on more stable ground, but within plain sight of the old ruins. My sisters and I all went on to build lives and families of our own. Collectively, if you include our children, there is a novelist, a member of parliament, a Rhodes Scholar, two lawyers, six university graduates, and a Doctor of Philosophy. There is also a history of substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and long-standing hurts and silences.
The only time the four of us siblings have been together in the same room in the last few decades was in the hospital where my father was dying of cancer in 2017. As for my mother, she is somehow still alive, though in a steady decline in a nursing home. In truth, she never really came back from the stroke. It’s one of the great losses of my life. We managed to keep her housed and get her on public assistance, but she only became more erratic over time and often fell in with schemers looking for easy prey.
Over the years, my sisters and I have talked about the houses and apartments where our lives took a turn or where we felt abandoned by the wider world. One day, about five years ago, my oldest sister and I decided to take a driving tour of the old rentals, to see what sort of power they still held over us. We drove across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, into the suburb of Manly, and onto Kangaroo Street, the last known address of the real Frances Smith, the apartment consumed by fire while she was in hospital.

Crossie at 9:47.

From what I understand sportsmen used to be paid a token amount even as recently as 40 years ago. It is the professionalisation of sport that is all about money.

Up until at least the 1930’s (possibly later) English cricket was divided into professionals and amateurs.
The professionals were working class or middle class lads who couldn’t afford to not have a job. The amateurs were typically chinless wonders from Public Schools who wouldn’t dream of taking money to play their beloved sport.
They even had separate dressing rooms.
Here’s the catch.
Better known amateurs didn’t draw match fees but made shitloads from product endorsements.
It is rumoured some of the better amateurs took under-the-table payments as well.

Professionalisation has destroyed those connections pretty much for good.

The Catholic Weekly By Guest Contributor – June 17, 2023
Bob Cameron’s awakening from what he calls his “long spiritual coma” will speak to many souls in our era, so pervaded by spiritual confusion, emptiness, dissatisfaction, and loss.

About the Author
Bob Cameron was born in 1947 into a British Catholic family and raised in the faith’s education system. Aged 18, he angrily rejected the Church. Working as a journalist, Bob then began a 42-year media career. After covering the Northern Irish Troubles, he migrated to Australia in 1971 where he rose to become a senior executive in Kerry Packer’s media empire. In his fifties, Bob finally awoke from his ‘long spiritual coma’ and embarked on the challenging but ultimately healing journey of returning to the Church.
