Then, there was the heffer with the huge nose ring. You could’ve stuck a bell on it.

Did she at least make a good coffee?

Yeah, she did. Bern, I’m not exaggerating, it’s perfect.

I used to go across the street to Joe and the Juice, but Aroni’s is better.

Look, I head there for coffer each morning so I can sneak in a cig on the way as wifey is still in her jammies and I won’t get caught out. The coffee then covers the cig odor on the way back.

Australian icebreaker Nuyina’s 4km trip to refuel in Hobart turns into a 660km journey to Burnie that costs taxpayers nearly a million dollars

and…

Liberal senator Jonathon Duniam also called for a solution to the issue such as bringing a fuel barge to Hobart, an option previously ruled out by TasPorts.

Or a nice big tanker on wheels – the sort that fills up petrol stations?

The YouTube linked by shatterzzz was very interesting.
Hamas on the offensive, if it’s a bit sticky for IDF they call in an airstrike, the terrorists die or retreat underground.
As Israel advances it finds and seals tunnels, there doesn’t to be any indication that they are chasing them down them.
I wonder if they have a rough idea of where hostages are, maybe under Shifa?
Will it end up as a seige?
Did any of the experts predict how quickly the IDF would advance?

They are now facing a housing crisis that is driving rents to new highs so even working people are struggling to find accommodation. Ya think that might be something worth complaining about and why they have to move back in with their parents?

Or that the inflation surge is easily outpacing wages growth so they are falling behind. Or that up to 20% of residential purchases are cash down by the older set driving up both rents and house prices.

Should they do as Panahi stated a couple of years ago : they achieved nothing and should shut up.

Attitudes like that echoed by Boomers and the current economic climate make them angry. I don’t blame them because it is the older generations that have created these problems.

Rosie
Nov 8, 2023 5:19 PM

Boomers aren’t running the government and they aren’t importing 600,000 migrants per annum and allowing wealthy foreign nationals to buy in in an already overcrowded market.

And people like Matthew Bach think pushing geriatrics out of the leafies will give people like him a foot in.

No, just about every house sold is going to wealthy new Australians.
If you don’t have at least two million, don’t bother.

John H & Rosie,

My Wife & I were discussing this Generational Problem last night

Not one of our Grandchildren has worked whilst at School & none who have finished High School, have worked on completion of Exams

Both My Wife & Myself worked while we were at school, as our parents were poor

My wife is the only one in her family to have got past the Intermediate Certificate let alone onto Uni & on completion of Leaving Certificate exams was put out to work by her Dad

Myself, the day after my final Leaving Certificate Exam, my Italian Classmate and I lined up at WaterBoard Depot under TV Tower Willoughby Road at 0645 & were trucked to worksite to begin Jack Hammering deepening Sewage Tunnel under Bahai Temple Chatswood – Gum Boots issued and standing in Shit and No Ear Plugs

After cleaning up, caught Bus into town for Qantas Cadet Pilot Application at 1700 same day – Failed as Badly Colour Blind

Wife & I engaged at 18 for her, 20 for me and we bought a block of land together at Frenchs Forest – when after being married and posted to Melbourne bought 34 Sq M 1 Bedrn Apt at Harbord in 1968 (could swing a cat and hit all 4 walls) Rented it out and Negative Geared.

1st Time overseas was on posting in 1970 when 25 years old.

Forget the $2 Million property, young people need to think outside the box and look at places like Mackay – $275K for 2 Bedrm 2 Storey No Common Walls Townhouse 121 Sq M Internal, 194 Sq M external Centre of town rented $430 pw – 10% dep and negative gear

Even in Sydney, Wife has been looking at Studio Older Block North Sydney car space for less than $500k

We have tried to convince Youngest Live in Daughter to do this with her Husband and telling Grandkids to look at the Mackay type location of investing to get 1st Foot in door

The proper Wet, complete with monsoonal bursts of 100mm+ for days at a time won’t generally turn up until mid-December.

However, there are usually runs of storms prior to that starting mid-October that cool things down a bit as well.

Last year we had 154mm in October. This year – 0. If anything, the Wet’s a bit late.

Delta, we have quite a few Jewish friends, and in fact, most are. To a man and woman, they’re absolutely mortified at what’s been going on. Cassie’s reaction is no different to how they feel. Israel actively sought to save the lives of ‘Palestinian’ women and children, thus preserving their moral authority before they started this necessary exercise in pest control.

Israeli soldiers, 20 and 21 year olds, are dying every single day because Israel has chosen to conduct a ground war with very specific targets rather than turning Gaza into glass or a pile of rubble. Which it would be fully entitled to do after October 7th without breaking international law.

Israeli soldiers are actually dying to protect Palestinian civilians.

You are a monstrous excuse for a human being if you cannot see what despicable atrocities was done by the very people you are supporting.

There are no civilians in war. If you don’t want civilian casualties then you don’t choose terror against your civilian neighbours as a weapon to get your own way. Screaming blue murder when that neighbour fights back.

I haven’t seen the video and have no knowledge of it, but I’d also find it credible because those fcking snakes have no limits and no limits should be how they should be treated. Sticking a baby in an oven, a son calls his dad, crying with joy that he’s killed 10 Jews, and then the mother gets on the phone, congratulating the pig son and wishing she was there with him. Yeah, the way I feel, I would have zero sympathy if they all perished. Let me know if you want a copy of a video of a group of men cutting a child out of a pregnant woman’s stomach and slapping her in the face to stop her screaming. If all 2 million of them perished, I couldn’t give a shit. I wouldn’t be dancing on the street, but I’d feel nothing for these evil pigs.

He’s particularly concerned about the intelligence failures that allowed Oct 7th. He’s determined though that the IDF should finish the job, not give in to presures for a ceasefire. It’s only the end of the beginning, he says, knowing that the job will be long and harrowing. Meanwhile, multiple Cats are openly calling for genocide by Israel.

I have not seen this, M0nty. I’ve seen people supporting the IDF in minimising civilian casualties while still recognizing that in war there will be deaths called ‘collateral damage’, as happens in ALL wars. This is warfare that was declared on the basis of an inhuman and provocative attack, part of a Hamas strategy that now needs an end-game. War involves killing and being killed. Genocide is what Hamas is calling for – the obliteration of a people based on their location and ethnicity. The IDF is doing the opposite of intentional obliteration, shepherding civilians out of Gaza city against Hamas’ opposition to this. Hamas uses civilian non-combatants as human shields. There has been plenty of discussion here about what Hamas’ does that is against any rule of war, and what is ‘proportionate’ in response to their ongoing threat of violence.

I hate it too, M0nty, the destruction and killing, but until Hamas is destroyed Israel will know peace. After that, I am hopeful that the terrific young middle-class teens from Hebron whom I sat next to and had fun with on the way back from Rovaneime in Finland (where they had been on a ski trip) will represent all of the Palestinian youth in some future settlement where Jews and Arabs can both have decent economies, with their lives not blighted by Islamic fundamentalism.

It was noted, at the time, that a shack in the western suburbs on smallish block cost about $220,000. I’ll be really generous and say it was Smithfield or Fairfield, rather Penrith, but it damn well was Penrith. It certainly wasn’t Parramatta.

In today’s money, that’s a $572,000 house, 32.6km from a city with a population of 3.55m.

And this leads us to the most damning part of this false equivalence. Hamas regards its civilians as expendable. It places its command control personnel where civilians are, often underground beneath hospitals and refuges. This is the game it plays, so its apologists can scream that Israel is guilty of war crimes. It is a deliberate tactic to win the propaganda war and on balance, it has been extremely successful, contriving unconfirmed body counts.

The docs here would have a better handle on this than me, but hypoglycaemic attacks usually go through a fumbling/dropping /quite uncoordinated stage that last several minutes before a fit. I can’t see someone driving normally in that stage. A hyperglycaemic is usually too damn crook to get behind the wheel of a car in the first place.
Honestly, knowing what we do – which is bugger all – the sudden speed up sounds horribly like a fit. What causes the fit is something else again. It could be an undetected brain lesion, a fall the previous day and a slow bleed with pressure on the brain. So many things can go wrong and with no warning.
I’d be still waiting for medical results and diabetes doesn’t really fit the story.

Hamas terrorists were making a “last stand” in a hospital in northern Gaza on Tuesday night in a showdown witnessed by a Telegraph reporter.

Israeli warplanes, tanks and infantry cornered the last remains of a 1,000 strong battalion of the terrorist group’s forces holed up in the Indonesian Hospital and a nearby school.

The fierce fighting came as Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, said that Gaza was now “surrounded” and vowed that the operation would continue “to the end”…Pointing to the plumes of dust rising about 2km to the south, Lt Col Blick said fewer than 100 Hamas fighters were taking shelter in the Indonesian Hospital, the last survivors of a thousand-strong unit.

“They fought when we came in but folded after a day. Their command lines were cut. Now, where you can see the dust rising, in the hospital, they are making their last stand,” he said.

I suppose that’s another 900 for the genocide total.

here’s the article about Hamas in the Indonesian hospital. If the IDF secure it soon I guess we’ll find out if it’s sitting on top of terrorist infrastructure.

Anyone else’s convection microwave blow up with depressing regularity?

The K-Mart cheapo ones I’ve brought for my two older boys have lasted well. There is not a lot to go wrong. When they’ve rusted inside due to lack of cleaning and the turntable has cracked I don’t blame the manufacturers!

More expensive ones are a problem though. The free-standing SMEG microwave/convection oven in our fairly recent kitchen reno a couple of years ago is already puffing and groaning and throwing disco on-and-off lights at us when it’s being used. An inbuilt one, another SMEG, in the renovation we did in an investment apartment was never any good; it was far too complicated in its menu-driven electronics to use, and the tenants there finished it off within a year stabbing away hopefully at the display screen till it collapsed in a final agony of being frozen on high.

In Australia as my second home news, apologise if posted:

Pacific Island leaders have made a bid to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to curb fossil fuel projects amid a growing rebellion in the region calling on Australia to end more coal and gas projects.

The pushback has been seized by the Greens to attack the PM domestically as he jets off overseas.

In his first bilateral meeting at the Pacific Islands Forum, Mr Albanese met with Tuvalu Prime Minister Kausea Natano at Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Natano said the issue of fossil fuel projects was “an issue that we are working with Australia (on) to get them to assist because fossil fuel is the main contributor to global warming,” he said.

In the lead-up to Mr Albanese’s arrival, former Tuvalu PM Enele Sopoago said the Pacific Nations should not “rubber stamp” Australia’s bid to host the next UN Climate conference — a key election pledge — until fossil fuel projects are stopped.

But on Tuesday, Mr Natano said he felt Mr Albanese had a sense of “urgency” in his response to climate change and he would support his bid to co-host COP.

In the meeting, Mr Albanese acknowledged that Tuvalu was on the “frontline of climate change”.

“It’s (climate change) impact is felt most acutely in island states. My government was elected with a platform on acting on climate change. I look forward to working with you in the interest of both our respective nations but also in the interest of the globe.“

Mr Natano said it was his duty as the leader of a nation that could go underwater to do everything he can to prevent climate change.

“Thank you so much for this opportunity. We have had a lot of time in this beautiful country. I look forward to our discussion.”

Pacific Elders’ Voice, a group of former leaders across the region, are calling for pacific island nations to delay their support of Australia’s pursuit of a 2026 UN climate conference until the government “stops approving Pacific-killing coal and gas projects”.

It’s understood Mr Albanese affirmed Australia’s support for Tuvalu’s Long-Term Adaption Plan and commitment to help Tuvalu adapt in practical ways to sea level rises.

The pair also discussed their priorities for the PIF Leaders’ meeting including regional cooperation and the importance of unity among the Pacific Island nations.

Mr Albanese also met with Kiribati president Taneti Maamau, vowing to support the nation’s “acquisition of a second patrol boat, because we understand that our region’s security is something that we need to look after in the Pacific family.”

Kiribati has switched its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China to 2019.

In addition to spruiking the benefits of the controversial Pacific Labor Mobility Programme, Mr Albanese used his second meeting to again double down on his commitment to climate change support.

The PM rounded off his first day at the forum with a meeting with Cook Islands prime minister Mark Brown — wooing him with a South Sydney Rabbitohs jersey to thank him for hosting the forum.

Greens leader Adam Bandt said Australia was walking “into a big climate fight”.

“The Greens support calls from the Pacific for Labor to stop subsidising coal and gas and to stop opening new coal and gas mines,” Mr Bandt said.

“Leaders, former leaders and Pacific civil society organisations are making clear that Labor shouldn’t host the global climate summit until it stops pushing for more coal and gas.”

Mr Bandt accused Mr Albanese of walking in with coal in each pocket.

“Albanese risks becoming a Pacific pariah like Scott Morrison if he keeps backing more coal and gas.”

In opposition, Energy Minister Chris Bowen promised Australia will bid for the next COP to be co-hosted with the pacific if it wins government.

“Seeking to host COP with those Pacific partners who wish to co-host it with us will be an excellent opportunity to remind the world about the issues at stake and enable our Pacific brothers and sisters to make their case to the world in a most direct way,” he said at the time.

Lol those Pacific ‘leaders’ strongarming the useless PM of this country. And Bandt. But watch Albo speak again from both sides of his arse. On one cheek, he will utter platitudes about the need to stop these projects to appease Pacific ‘leaders’, the other cheek saying those projects are vital to Australian interests. FMD.

Re the diabetic episode & the car crashing into the Victorian pub.
Something is not sitting right about it.

It seems certainly plausible to me. I’m not diabetic, but SWMBO has been insulin-dependent for over 30 years, so I have a fair bit of domain experience!

My guess is that he had a hypo, and that he thus “zoned out” as it were. He then realised he was in trouble – “woke up”, if you will – and went to hit the brake, but hit the accelerator in error.

Hypos are not linear, and are very difficult for diabetics to self-detect once they get past a certain level. When they start to get low, they can certainly feel that, but then, as they drop lower still, that detection seems to drop away entirely.

SWMBO is an outstandingly well-controlled diabetic, but every now and then it catches her out too. Maybe once a decade or so. The last time, only 18 months or so ago, she told me she was just fine (they can get a bit bolshie in denial when they are really low) and I was actually following her across the room with a sweet drink in hand when she again told me she was just fine, then collapsed.

The description in the Hun seems all too possible and entirely tragic.

I cannot get these images out of my head. It’s actually depressed me and I’m not prone to depression or stuff like that. What happened isn’t human.

Today I saw a woman carrying the dearest little baby, about three months old, as I was driving by a school in Bondi Junction where security is considered necessary now. She had another child, a little girl of about four, walking beside her holding her hand.

This sight just about did me in as I was driving by. I suddenly imagined this woman’s child with a forearm chopped off before she was murdered, her mother raped and the sweet little baby, sheer human defenselessness, crushed or burned in unimaginable flesh-searing ways. I felt sick to my stomach. These things are affecting us all.

AFP refer hate-fuelled Al Madina Dawah sermon to terror squad

By alexi demetriadi

7:38PM November 8, 2023

The Australian Federal Police has referred a hate-fuelled sermon, revealed by The Australian, to a counter-terrorism squad for assessment as security experts criticised the country’s approach to tackling extremism, accusing it of “forgetting basic lessons”.

Legal experts said the sermons – which included language pertaining to Jews being killed and drowned – could also “sail close” to criminality.

On Tuesday, this masthead revealed that the cleric who called himself Abu Ousayd and gave a “kill Jews” sermon in Sydney was jihadi preacher Wissam Haddad, an extremist who had expressed support for terrorist groups. His defunct al-Risalah Islamic Centre was frequented by men who went on to commit atrocities in Syria, like Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar.

This publication also revealed how another cleric, “Brother Ismail”, had given a sermon at Al Madina Dawah Centre – run by Haddad – which called for jihad.

NSW Police confirmed they were investigating both sermons and an AFP spokeswoman told The Australian one had been “referred to the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team for assessment”.

one of Optus’ routers has likely been fed incorrect routing information in an update, leading to total network gridlock.

If its the BGP routers for Optus, then this is common attack (ie. 5k to 10k network and DOS attacks a day is fairly normal) which every company like Optus running BGP should monitor and guard against.

Key issue for Optus is not the attack, which is common and known, but the response which was badly managed and poorly communicated.

Haha, just after I posted that elderly possum lady arrived with her sidecar – well more of a jockey than a sidecar. She got half a slice of bread and young one a morsel.

Today was interesting at the Cafe as a second female koel turned up – one who I’d last seen a year ago. More timid and less brick red colour tints in her head feathers. She accepted a couple bits of mince, and I left it at that because she was pretty scared even though she knew me. Mr Koel calling in his fig tree from 4am is bringing the ladies in! I hope he gets lucky.

And I went for a longer walk on a route I haven’t done for over 6 months. Two sets of local magpies still recognized me instantly and were rewarded. Amazing the hard disk capacity of a magpie, that they can remember single humans for that long.

Not necessarily. Lets say that 1:1000 are the insane. In a country town of 10,000 that would be 10 complete nutters – manageable, especially back in the day.

Now with 8 billion, that would be 8 million nutters who can all band together online and disrupt normal people.

Fair enough, but we’re quibbling about numbers. The point is a mad, implacable minority can fuk a much larger society. Our society is predicated on people obeying the laws and norms. Which brings the question of what that means for society when a government does things like the massive overreach during covid? Laws only really mean anything as a generally accepted societal consensus of right and wrong. When the majority of society are in breach of “the law” does that engender respect for law or not?
As I’ve seen posted on US blogs, laws only really protect criminals and give them a fair trial. When the majority no longer respect laws….

“Resembled a large book”?? Looxoory, lad. When I started we ran an insurance company off an 80MB hard drive and 128KB of RAM. Drive was the size of a washing machine and, like many a washing machine, had a tendency to shimmy all over the floor.

For home use I started with a Sinclair zx81, then the Spectrum then a Commodore 64, then the 80286, and then followed the treadmill to my current beast.

After finishing training, my first real program was hand written on coding sheets and the lovely ladies in the lunch room turned it into punch cards. My 2nd or 3 job was to take a program written in the 70s to structure it properly and eliminate the GOTOs ,it was written for when the mainframe had two K ( yes K) of ram. Our first 1GB hard drive was the size of a fridge.being part of the maintenance team I got to take a compaq luggable home. As we were a large IBM sho, and I was then working as a junior tech consultant I was given an AT computer to evaluate. It was out of the first 24 in the country.

When I changed jobs from the mainframe house, I was given a DG1 512k of Ram and 2x 3.5 floppies. We priced a 5mb hardrive $3500 ( 1983 dollars). Traded that for a Toshiba t3100, which looked like a laptop, but no battery

By Montys definition the allies committed genocide when they advanced through Europe and into Germany during WW2. Palestinians have been supporting or putting up with Hamas for over 15 years. The parallels with what happened to the Germans and what is now happening to the Palestinians is very similar. The allies never gave advanced warning on when or what they would bomb. You could say that the Israelis are being much nicer.

This is a good point, BN. The bombing of Dresden is difficult to justify, analogously to the bombing of Gaza.

The usual utilitarian argument goes that you are saving more lives by killing lesser numbers of innocent people to shorten the war. Skilled orators can make you forget how monstrous that logic actually is.

Labor by-passing Northern Territory leaders on Indigenous affairs

By paige taylor
Indigenous Affairs Correspondent, WA Bureau Chief
@paigeataylor
7:53PM November 8, 2023

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth has moved to compel the Northern Territory government to prove its spending on family violence has been effective as she considers demands for extra money.

The standoff comes as the federal government increasingly chooses to bypass the Fyles government on Indigenous policy by funding Aboriginal organisations directly.

On Tuesday, Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney was in Darwin to announce $1.78m of commonwealth money for night patrols. Instead of providing the money to the Fyles government, the commonwealth has entered a contract with the community-controlled Larakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation to do the work. This is now a preferred way of delivering services under the Closing the Gap agreement signed in 2020.
Read Next

Ms Rishworth has responded to the Territory government’s recent public demands for more funding to combat family and domestic violence by accusing the it of blame shifting. The Australian understands Ms Rishworth feels it would be premature to fund new family violence initiatives in the NT without understanding delays in spending money already provided and without knowing whether programs already delivered have been effective.

“Any suggestion the commonwealth is not responding to the situation in the NT does not acknowledge the commitments we have made and serves to play politics and indulge in blame-shifting, when all governments should be focused on working together,” Ms Rishworth said.

The calls for more commonwealth funding coincide with a coronial inquest into the violent deaths of four Aboriginal women in the NT. Coroner Elisabeth Armitage’s investigation so far have found that 83 women have died as a result of domestic violence in the NT since 2000. Of those, 93 per cent were Aboriginal and killed by their partners. Indigenous females living in the NT were 50 times as likely to be hospitalised due to assault compared with non-Indigenous females, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

The Albanese government funds family and domestic violence services in the NT above what the NT would otherwise receive on a per capita basis. It has committed $147m for family and domestic violence services in the NT over four years.

“Not all of that goes to the Northern Territory government – a lot of it is direct funding to organisations on the ground. This is a significant investment,” Ms Rishworth said.

“We have also worked with Aboriginal leaders right across this country to develop our first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan, because we know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children are seeing a higher rate of serious incidents which lead to injury. In the most recent budget we put $263m into that.”

Eva Lawler, the NT’s Acting Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, claimed the territory was not getting a big enough share of commonwealth funding. “Currently levels of federal investment, based on population size – not need – are just a drop in the ocean when it comes addressing domestic, family and sexual violence,” Ms Lawler said.

The Territory’s handling of commonwealth funds has been criticised for years, presenting a conundrum for successive federal governments that recognise the depth of the social crisis.

In October the Central Land Council called for an intervention in the Territory’s public education system after The Australian’s NT Schools in Crisis series revealed a bloated bureaucracy was short changing schools $214.8m a year.

The thing about the Geneva Conventions is you don’t get to whine “aww Muuuum he started it” and earn a free pass. They are there for good reason: to protect civilians and prevent genocide.

..
You might want a word in the ear of Hamas on that one.
Article 34 of the fourth convention prohibits hostage taking.
Hamas is, and continues, in absolute violation of the fourth convention while it holds hostages.
Not to mention the illegality of the original attack, which was murder, a crime even in war.

I’m not convinced that the Geneva conventions are even the correct guide to this conflict.
What Hamas did was go into Israel, commit multiple murders and other crimes on civilian men, woman and children, which were of zero military value or justification, then seize hostages and retreat to their own territory.
In fact, the situation is more akin to an active crime scene.
Civilians need to leave, as they would in a active shooter crime scene.

Correct. They’re not.

The wilfully ignorant or deliberate misuse of ‘proportionality’ is what’s being used to fuel the pause cause. Except no. Proportionality does not mean ‘they killed 1400, so we get to kill 1400.’ Proportionality means that Israel can – and is morally obliged to – take those requisite measures necessary to eliminate Hamas; even if this leads to civilian casualties in pursuance of legitimate military targets and goals.

All Hamas has to do is give up the hostages, surrender and undertake to forever disavow exterminationism.

Dresden was a perfectly legitimate military target – there was an important rail centre there, as well as factories producing arms.

There was no specific military need to firebomb the city centre over three days and kill 25,000 people. Unless you wanted to cause chaos by targeting fleeing civilians, which was part of the Allies plan.

As I said, there is a valid utilitarian argument that can be made to defend the glassing of Dresden. It was of its time, at the end of a world war. There but for the grace, walk a mile in Churchill’s shoes, etc.

I am not so sure Captain Hindsight pundits will look back as sympathetically on Gaza as they do on Dresden. But hey, history is written by the winners.
