Well, the Daily Mail had Lunas in Bordeaux and Janet A had it in Provence.

But it isn’t. It’s a tiny village of 650 with two restaurants (closed in winter) a boulangerie and a mini-mart. A creek, a bridge a couple of ruins and a 17th century “chateau” which is a hotel. It is 50km west of Montpellier, and even further from Toulouse. So small you can’t find it on a Google map until you…Google it.

Now I’m a country girl at heat, if not in fact, but it’s not my cup of tea. For a pair of upwardly mobile slicksters…make up your own minds.

In my view it’s an “address” for unwelcome visitors and post only.

“The section of the constitution they (leftist judge again, which they failed to mention) used is for people who have engaged in rebellion or insurrection. Trump has done no such thing, has not been charged with any such thing despite memes.
It will have to go to SCOTUS, and quickly.”

It is arguable that that particular section of the constitution does NOT apply to the president – that has never been litigated as far as I know.
As someone else noted, the president is not an “officer” of the US, he is an elected representative, and that section of the constitution lists several elected positions, but doesn’t list the president.

So there would appear to be at least 3 arguments to be made for Trump:

1) that while he was impeached by the house, the senate did not convict him and there have been no civil or criminal charges of rebellion or insurrection against Mr Trump, laws regarding which were passed by congress shortly after the civil war to “enable” the constitutional amendment that bans such people;

2) that his words and actions, regardless of whether he was indicted and/or convicted or not, do not rise to “insurrection” anyway (eg: “March peacefully and patriotically…”, “We are the party of law and order…” and so on) and were in fact covered under his first amendment right to free speech;

3) that, as above, that section of the constitution does not apply to the position of president of the US.

I suspect Trump may file for SCOTUS listing all three and maybe some other things as well. We’ll see, but it is not as simple as the Disinformation Industrial Complex (aka MSM) make out.

If SCOTUS is nervous about it, they may deny the DoJ prosecutors request to go straight to SCOTUS, and instead demand that they go through the entire DC appeals process first, which would likely extend the time before it gets to SCOTUS hearing it until AFTER the 2024 election and so it would become moot and they can dodge the entire shit-fight.

My fear is that ‘culture’ as it – um – stands today – worsened by woke and AI – makes it highly unlikely we will see any more Les Murrays (an educated man whose genius with languages alone was off the charts) or self-taught prodigies like Bazza.

CL, I take the long view.

The West’s latest phase began at the end of World War II.

It has taken nearly 80 years, but the West’s enemy within — the left — is now re-fighting the battle the fascists lost in 1945 on the side of the losers.

The left, for example, now sides with the theocratic fascists of Hamas against the Middle East’s only democracy.

The West is freedom and opposing Western ideals is opposing freedom.

The West’s future includes much lived experience of freedom’s fortunes since 1945 — especially the attempts from within by fascism in the 21st century to overturn the West’s freedoms.

Freedom is a basic human ideal, second only to food and shelter. That is not going to disappear because freedom’s enemies are suddenly wearing clever disguises.

The West will have many more erudite champions like Barry Humphries and Les Murray — but with a store of wisdom that will include extensive documentation of the attempts since World War II by freedom’s enemies to destroy it.

More on Good News!

Freeze order plan for Brittany Higgins’ assets

Brittany Higgins and her partner have just packed up and moved to start a new life in France, but they have been hit with another snag.

Former Liberal Minister Linda Reynolds is considering seeking a court-ordered freeze of Brittany Higgins’ assets in the wake of her move to France.

Senator Reynolds — Ms Higgins’ former boss — is suing both Ms Higgins and her partner David Sharaz for defamation over social media posts on Twitter and Instagram.

Her lawyers wrote to Ms Higgins’ lawyer Leon Zwier on Tuesday signalling they plan to ask the Supreme Court of Western Australia for the freeze orders which restrain a party to a case from selling or moving assets while a legal action is still in process.

An extract of the letter sent to Ms Higgins was obtained by The Australian.

“If such reports are true, we consider that an application for freezing orders is appropriate,’’ the letter states.

“Please advise as a matter of urgency your client’s intentions in respect of her travel to France and your availability to confer in respect of our client’s proposed application.”

Ms Higgins, who secured a $2.44 million payout from the Albanese Government a year ago on her 28th birthday, is believed to have purchased her first home in the south of France for an estimated $600,000.

Ms Higgins told the court during her testimony that after she paid tax and legal fees to personal injury lawyer Noor Blumer she received $1.9 million.

If true, she should still have assets somewhere in the vicinity of $1.3 million, minus whatever living expenses she has used this year when she rented a home on the Gold Coast and took several overseas trips with Mr Sharaz to the Maldives, Paris and Geneva.

The Good News keeps on coming!

Prince Harry dealt bitter new blow as book ‘fail’ is revealed

Calculations reveal a bleak picture for the Duke of Sussex who has seen one of his biggest projects slammed as a “financial fail”.

When his memoir Spare debuted in January, 2023 it almost immediately broke records faster than Usain Bolt after sculling several Red Bulls, seemingly ensuring that Harry’s heart-on-his-sleeve tell-all was a ring-a-ding success.

Until now, that is, with a new report labelling the book a “financial fail”.

Paula Froelich, a former longtime Page Six deputy editor, now writing for the fast growing US cable network News Nation, did a deepdive into the highest selling autobiographies of the year.

Taking into account the hardcover price of the book, the number of hardcovers sold and how much the duke was reportedly paid upfront by his publisher, Froelich calculated that King Charles’ younger son “would have had to sell more than twice the amount of books … than he did to earn back his advance.”

The Duke of Sussex’s title sold 1.2 million hardcover copies, according to Nation, however it would have had to sell 2.7 million hardcover copies for Penguin to come out even.

(According to Froelich, “hardcover sales account for 80 per cent of book sales, so it’s a good determinant of whether a book did well or not.”)

Reports vary as to how much Harry might have been paid as an advance for Spare, however Nation takes the number to be $13- 14.8 million ($USD9 – 10 million dollar), that is one quarter of the $51- 59 million ($USD35 to $40 million) that Entertainment Tonight says is the value of the duke and wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’s reported four-book deal.

Even working with this estimated advance figure, which is much lower than many other reported estimates such as the $29.5 million ($USD20 million) figure cited by the Times and the Telegraph, he did not sell enough hardcover copies for the publishing giant to recoup the cost of the advance, according to Nation’s calculations.

“Penguin Random House overpaid,” Froelich writes of the duke’s deal.

SBS apologises to No campaigner Warren Mundine over a segment that aired where Marcia Langton was called a ‘national treasure’

Taxpayer-funded broadcaster SBS has apologised to No campaigner Warren Mundine for airing a heated voice debate that included Indigenous host Narelda Jacobs labelling Yes campaigner Marcia Langton a “national treasure” and technical staff cutting the Indigenous businessman’s microphone so he could not respond to comments made about him.

During the robust discussion that aired on October 14, the night of voice referendum vote, it was moderated by TV presenter Jacobs whose “character observation” had “unduly favoured” Professor Langton, SBS ombudsman Amy Stockwell’s investigation in the matter found.

SBS received eight complaints about the segment, led by Jacobs and John Paul Janke, and in the Ombudsman’s two-month investigation into the matter it found comments made by Jacobs that were glowing of Prof Langton were not impartial and breached the SBS Code of Practice.

Mr Mundine – a former SBS board member – said during the panel discussion, “I’m not going to take any comments from a person that we are a racist country and that we are racist people.”

Mr Mundine said in his complaint to the SBS he was referring to comments made by Prof Langton six years ago: “In 2017, Ms Langton said “Of course, Australia’s racist. It’s a horrible racist country”,” Mr Mundine wrote in his letter of complaint.

Jacobs then said during the robust debate: “Well, we’re not going to sit here and take you abusing a national treasure like Marcia Langton who never said that Australians were racist, and her words were twisted.

“I’m going to stop you there, Warren.

“I think, well, we’ve just seen who Warren Mundine is.”

The SBS ombudsman said in her findings, “the character observation in the closing statement (by Jacobs) gave the impression one perspective had been unduly favoured over another in a way that was inconsistent with the impartiality provisions of the Code.”

Mr Mundine told The Australian the following day the segment was the “worst interview” he had done during the entire voice debate, and he later complained to the SBS.

The ombudsman’s investigation also found that at 8.06pm during the panel debate Mr Mundine stated that there should be an audit of funding for First Nations services, which he supported.

His microphone was subsequently switched off.

Children’s lavish 2023 Christmas wishlists are going viral

It is the most magical time of the year and also the most expensive – and children’s Christmas wish lists are going viral for a wild reason.

A 13-year-old girl’s Christmas list is going viral because it unearths what kids really want, and it certainly isn’t toys you can get at Kmart.

The teen’s aunty shared her luxury list on X, and it featured everything from Dior lip oil ($62), money (no amount specified), Gucci perfume ($190), and Drunk Elephant bronzing drops ($60).

She also wanted a silk pillowcase, and a MacBook pro for $2699.00, and asked for an unspecified amount of money again … because who doesn’t want money twice?

The young girl also wrote that she’d like a Frank Green water bottle for $59.95 and a Dior concealer for $74.

The list quickly went viral, and people were shocked that a young person could have such expensive taste;

it looked less like a kid’s Santa wish list and more like a Paris Hilton’s Christmas recommendation for adults.

Dover

The Communist Times writer hinges his argument on two things.

1. PPP
2. Electricity production.

PPP is right twice. When you go up through PPP and when you go down through PPP. The writer suggests that China’s economy is larger than the US in PPP terms. I’m looking to buy something with PPP currency but can’t find it. 🙂

He says it’s not in terms of the exchange rate. Ponder this for a second. If China made its currency fully convertible (floated the Yuan), the wall of money wanting to leave and find a home elsewhere wouldn’t be too far from a 50% drop in the currency’s value. If we remeasured where the Yuan floated (in exchange rate terms), the difference in terms of size would be huge.

So, someone should ask this idiot: if he’s taken the absurd argument that the US dollar fell over the quarter and therefore, in terms of the exchange rate, the US economy was smaller than the 5.2% GDP print, what would things look like if the Yuan was allowed to float?

There’s more to the story about electricity production than meets the eye. China has 1.2 billion people compared to 330 million Americans, and a large number still aren’t on the grid. We don’t know enough about US energy efficiency, and I would like to see the numbers for both China and the US.

– Pretty soon we’ll hear how Trump was seen on the grassy knoll in Dallas.

– The script is as bad and predictable as Days of our Lives

– At least there are attractive women with large knockers on Days of Our Lives.

– “because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack”

– It was such a brutal “attack” that the Feds held the door open and waved people inside.

– Complete with WARshington Show Trials more spectacularly corrupt than Moscow’s in the 1930’s. USA! USA! USA!

More here about using PPP (purchasing power parity) vs exchange rates when making comparisons.

There’s use for both, but by and large exchange rates would rule.

If you think it can go to the finish of the escalation ladder directly you need to calm down. Any major escalation brings all the Yemeni allies into the equation.

Dover, Hairy’s view in our recent late nite discussion was that Trump would have reacted at the first missile into the Red Sea. This would not have been a ‘major escalation’ but would have meant serious retaliatory business was being considered for outrageous behaviour. With Yemen, that chance was lost. (As a leader, Hairy has turned organisations and situations around by not being scared of bold moves followed by successful deals which is why he admires Trump so much.) Note that Hezbollah pulled its head in with return rockets and while Yemen is different, as you have argued, they still have much to lose. A few installations collapsing would have been reinforcement of that.

America projects only weakness right now. A stronger America can keep Israel on track for destroying (at best) or at least further containing Hamas, and I’m hoping we’ll see that with a Trump win. Trump is also a deal-maker who will seek outcomes and rewards for those who agree to participate across quite wide differences. There are a multitude of possible ‘deals’ and pressures that a strong President could make to settle things down in the Middle East. Some were mooted on the last thread, but strategies will change as situations do.

Justice would be 51% of Colorado ‘writing in’ Donald John Trump on their Presidential ballot paper.

It won’t make any difference as the Colorado Secretary of State, the official responsible for elections, will not take them into account.

Colorado voted heavily for Biden in 2020, and less convingly for Crimton in 2016.
Ignoring the principal of this for a moment, the “winner takes all” nature of state electoral colleges means this has little practical effect.

All they seemed interested in was parading their various security “clearances” – made obvious by the colour of their lanyards, of all things.

Err, my experience of security clearances was that they were things which should decidely not be “paraded” or “flaunted”.
You use you pass to gain access to the secure facility, you wear it whilst inside so that people are assured you are where you should be and you take it off and keep it secure and hidden elsewhere.
One of the aspects of security clearances is not advertising who has what clearance to all and sundry.

And income tax

And Income Tax was first introduced for Britain to fight the Napoleonic Wars. Are not those wars over now so why hasn’t the Income Tax been stopped?

Third of the just released final episodes of The Crown which we watched last night was a coming of age tale about William at uni, specifically St. Andrews in Scotland, along with a clutch of other Old Etonians. Also present were some non-aristo middling super-rich, including young Kate Middleton The focus was on poor Carol Middleton, who was crucified as a scheming mother, because Kate went on the same expensive Gap Year programmes that Wills did. We see that it did Wills good to be rejected at first by Kate in favour of an ‘ordinary’ rich chap, that his first girlfriend was a super-rich bitch, and that he was thinking of leaving uni, until his friend Kate texted him to stay. And that’s it. Wills perks up at the message and its single x. Fade to black. As everyone knows, love (and being a Prince) won her heart in the end.

Meanwhile, within the family circle, a fairly unsympathetically portrayed Harry is psychologically setting himself up as Spare.

FMD. The Paywallian’s foreign editor Greg Sheridan is a major reason why Australians are so poorly informed about American politics.

Sheridan reminds me of 3AW’s Neil Mitchell — pissing into the wind to see which way it’s blowing. Sheridan’s Trump derangement and his contempt for middle America is antipodean, neanderthal and embarrasing.

This afternoon the second of our chandelier extravagances went up over the dining table, a Italian Murano glass showpiece, to add interest to the cloud wallpaper that now looks down on all who dine. Who knows what god or gods lurk there in those clouds, keenly listening in to the paltry human affairs being energetically debated underneath, and having a good old laugh at us all.

As previously, the lad who did the actual installation, under the supervision of our regular electrician, asked shyly if he could take a photograph of this one too, for his mum. Apparently, she loved our first one. Today’s chandelier was more disaggregated and there was choice in how it all came together. The lad and I spent some time working out the way in which the various hanging pieces could be best displayed in terms of colour combos, while the old tradie kept looking at his watch.

Looks great now though, lighting up this rainy Sydney day.

Bertruk:

Price was especially impressive, landing the campaign’s finest woke slapdown during her National Press Club appearance in mid-September. Asked by some white kid in the audience if Australian Aborigines suffered because of colonisation, Price simply replied: “No.” She then elaborated: “A positive impact, absolutely. I mean, now we have running water, readily available food.”

And that’s the yardstick the Aboriginal people had to live by – their numbers were limited by starvation and they had to kill their excess babies and elderly to survive.
Only a Collectivist would find something noble in that.

Would have been a very interesting discussion between Mrs Pirate, Crysanthou and her instructing solicitors last night. Alas, not livestreamed. And I suspect not recorded either.

Yeah, I think taping the preliminary ‘frank and fearless’ meetings for the spin-off “Lisa vs The Patriarchy” series was ill considered.
Expect to see less of that.
I have grave doubts that Sue will make the cut for the Pirate’s Straya Day bash.
There might be a bit of soul-searching about the decision of the Pirates to split with Ten’s lawyers. If you are going to cop a beating, may as well let someone else pay for it.
But, Jeez, that was some inswinging yorker delivered by Lee on the last ball of the day.
Lee J : “I assume we won’t be hearing any of this cover up conspiracy stuff in your summation, insofar as it relates to Ms Brown?”
Ms Sue : [long pause] “Not for the purposes of these proceedings, no.” (That is code for “not ever”.)
Paraphrasing. That was Lee saying, “Your client has f-cked up this woman’s life with her half-arsed crusade. Enough is enough, and I will sink it if it is raised again in my Court.”

Dover, one other thing about electricity consumption. China has 1.2 billion people while the US is around 330 million. There’s nothing extraordinary that a nation, which is bouncing up towards being economically developed, would consume in total more electricity than a country that is 28% the size in terms of population.

Look at electricity consumption per head, which gives a far better representation.

US per capita consumption 73,677 kwh
China per capita consumption. 28,072

Question:

US uses lots of gas and oil to heat dwellings. What does China use? This could logically cause the spread to widen even more.
