JC: I’ll be gone until March 2025, so plenty of chance to catch up — ideally at Bobby Van’s steakhouse — when I’m in the NE, Manhattan in particular.

Most of the time I’ll be on the road — first stop, all going well, the Iowa caucuses Jan 15.

Looking forward to your reports on the election season which I’m sure will be far more informative than anything other journalists send back, even the Sky reporters are not up to it.

An interesting and unusual definition of “success”. Currently Hamas are losing about 60:1 combat fatalities. Plus thousands more PoWs.

The Mongols were in the beginning raiders. Raiding is what a largely light cavalry is going to practice. The Arabs were similarly mostly cavalry so were predominately a raiding force. Steppe and desert environments are conducive to raiding. Further, I wouldn’t say that raiding doesn’t require discipline. It certainly does if it’s going to be practiced effectively.

I take it farming was too labour intensive, stealing other people’s food was the way to go.

Every day I see on twitter Hamas successfully engaging the IDF

Every day I see hamas putting up nonsense fake videos of them ‘destroying’ IDF tanks.
I also see videos of hamas being taken out by air strikes after IDF spot them and call in their locations.
It’s a great way to maximise the terrorist death count while minimising their own.
How much are the IDF over counting hamas deaths a 1000 2000 3000?
Hamas left 1000 dead in Israel on the 7th.
They don’t care.
I’m betting the surrenders are highly motivated by the appalling odds.
Hamas, not surprisingly aren’t putting up videos of where they are getting smashed.
The IDF have been blowing up a lot of tunnels.
No tunnel. No hide.

Even the NYT accepts the utter depravity of the hamas 7/10 atrocity:

NY Times bears witness to evidence of Palestinian sexual savagery on October 7: “A two-month investigation by The Times uncovered painful new details, establishing that the attacks against women were not isolated events but part of a broader pattern of gender-based violence on Oct. 7.”

We have dozens of prior posts (see links at bottom) with photos, videos, and witness attestation to Hamas’ butchery and savagery, particularly towards women who were not only raped but also sexually mutilated.

I would nuke Gaza and the West Bank; and summarily execute any pro-hamas protestor. It sounds harsh but in the long run the wisdom of this approach will become apparent.

They do. They’re still there. Isreali IDF are being killed, wounded and are fighting in a confusing environment. Rockets still fall on Tel Aviv. Ambiguous battle zones caused the death of those three hostages.

I’m betting the surrenders are highly motivated by the appalling odds.

IDF filters out surrenders, separating Hamas from human shields netted in the same zone. I haven’t seen any reports about surrender numbers and what happens to those they used as shields. What’s a typical proportion of captured Hamas and human shields – we don’t know.

Short of an agreement in which those held in Israeli custody are freed, yes.

Really? All it needs to end this interminable conflict against the existence of Israel, where hostage taking is one tactic, is for Israel to release all captured Palestinians. Then click your fingers and the conflict is over.

I don’t like George Soros and I think his ‘Open Foundation’ is a malevolent force in US politics however people forget that he actually did some good in the 1980s when he used his dosh to finance and promote liberty groups in eastern Europe.

In the early 1990s, after the iron curtain fell, Victor Orban studied in the UK and USA thanks to Soros dosh.

‘A slice of resistance’: Thousands attend final 2023 pro-Palestinian rally
By Caroline Schelle
December 30, 2023 — 7.08pm

Listen to this article
4 min

Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets of Melbourne for the final time this year, vowing to continue gathering in the city until the violence in Gaza ends.

They defied drizzly conditions on Saturday afternoon to meet on the steps of the State Library for the 12th Free Palestine rally.

Police estimated about 6000 protesters marched through the CBD, many donning traditional keffiyeh scarves – a symbol of the Palestinian movement – waving flags or holding signs calling for a ceasefire.

Roxburgh Park mum Zeanab Hameed said it was the ninth rally she had attended, and brought her children, Ali, Zahra and Sarah.

She said it was important that people kept speaking up about what was happening in Gaza and used their voices to stand up for those who couldn’t.

“We’re very committed, and will be coming until the war stops against innocent civilians,” she said.

Does that include stopping the war against innocent Israeli civilians?

Hamas are able to replace their losses without any loss of experience or tempo.

Yet Hamas and Iran acknowledges when a primary key operative has been eliminated. eg October 7th was the response for assassination of Qasem Soleimani. If they can easily install replacements those eliminated must be much lower in importance and competance. Hamas has some very experienced, intelligent personnel. They wouldn’t be as easy to instantly replace. In any venture, particular key personnel are able to hold a range of strategies, implications, and communicate to others to execute their smaller part. Easily replaced persons are not these ones.

Been thinking about reading and readers. I have never undertaken any formal study of any sort of literature apart from the Leaving Certificate. I was quite sick in bed for a year in 1969 and did a lot of that sort of reading then during uni time. Also read quite a lot of the ‘greats’ when I worked in ads, long before I thought of going to uni. I’ve been ‘a reader’ all of my life, of all sorts of books. Ordinary people were often huge readers back in the day. It’s how Penguin got started. Some Cats and Kittehs will know this; others won’t. The reading public is now hostage to woke, most new writers are female, and boringly woke. Looking back at how we were, we’ve lost a lot of cultural literacy. It shows in what is published today.

The Mongols were in the beginning raiders. Raiding is what a largely light cavalry is going to practice
Ah good we are continuing. Yes perhaps, There is a great beginning to ‘The Great Game” by Peter Hopkirk ” You could smell them coming, even before you heard the thunder of their hooves. But by then it was too late” describing the Mongols arriving. I don’t know much about the Mongol methods – or the Uighurs ( an oft forgotten reason the Chinese keep them at arms length). My history books only describe the Hordes, such as the destruction of the Nizari ( the Assassins) and Baghdad by sheer numbers, starving them out and burning the whole place.
But the Ay-rabs I do know.
The other interesting part of October 7 is that in Islam the Arab boy must know how to ride a horse and use a sword and spear. That is part of the Koran or the Hadith (I’ll have to look that up) . But they take this very very seriously (even in Australia, yes). Note how are Hamas had motorbikes and AK 47s. The Ay-rabs see this as the modern equivalent. It has to do with martyrdom.

She’s understandably anxious, but not panicked, which is good. When anxious, cats like to find a safe place where they can ‘hide’, giving them an element of protection. Attapuss likes to hide himself behind the curtains in our bedroom whenever our doorbell rings. He looks hilarious, because you can see his white sox and tail, but he doesn’t know that. He feels safe there. Elsie will take at least a few days before she starts to explore further. That she allows an ear scratch at this early shows what a secure animal she is in general. Bodes well for the future.

Baked beans reminds me, we have some leftover from kids’ breakfasts at Christmas.

Even if the videos you’re watching are not manipulated, they don’t tell anything about what’s going on in the wider field of operation.

They do and this is seconded by the comment I quoted earlier from the NYT that Hamas are able to replace their losses without any loss of experience or tempo.

I might have missed the point, but didn’t someone comment that the relevant comments pre-dated 7 October? Might the reported current higher loss rate for leaders change the equation?

The Mongols were in the beginning raiders

Steppe by Piers Anthony is a fine SF book.

(I’m irritated by the blurb, the hero isn’t Turkish he’s Uighur. Which is how I knew about those people long before the Chinese ever got their genocidal boots on. The narrative is based on Temujin’s story. Doesn’t seem to be an ebook available, sadly, so I’ll have to dig out the PB and reread it.)

Police estimated about 6000 protesters marched through the CBD, many donning traditional keffiyeh scarves – a symbol of the Palestinian movement – waving flags or holding signs calling for a ceasefire.

I still have photos from my box brownie of groups of us at Zionist Habonim camps around Sydney in the late 1950s wearing black and white keffiyot, years before any Arab started calling themselves Palestinians. It was our symbolic expression of indigeity.

Palestinians are taught from birth that Jews have no valiid history in the Levant, that Jews are foreign European usurpers. They genuinely don’t know. Search on youtube for “Ask a Palestinian”. That could possibly be a starting point for Palestinians to understand the validity of Jewish claims.

This is a daydream.

We just had a lovely afternoon of normal Australia at our local bowling club (Bar Beach Swimmer knows it).
Spouse and I, our offspring over from WA about to fly back for next Pilbara swing, joined up with my 2nd sister, her family and a bunch of friends, for barefoot bowls.

Sea breeze SE fresh off the ocean, a few bevvies, and not a single word of discord or politics from a happy crowd in the summer afternoon sunshine.

It felt normal. For a change.

Hope everyone here can find a few of these moments in 2024.

Roxburgh Park mum Zeanab Hameed said it was the ninth rally she had attended, and brought her children, Ali, Zahra and Sarah.”

Any word from Zeanab about the hostages?

Also, I’m offended by Zeanab’s choice of name for her daughter. Sarah is a Hebrew name. She’s appropriated a Hebrew name and she should change her daughter’s name. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, is the Jewish matriarch, buried in the city of Hebron. Zeanab should change her daughter’s name to Hagar, much more appropriate.

Nothing surprises me about Palestinian Nazi scum, they like to appropriate anything Jewish and related to Jews, they appropriate our land, they appropriate our history, and they appropriate our suffering.

Re the Mongols etc, this is a good read, The Heartland by Stuart Legg:

many migrations from the steppes, the taiga, from western China to the Persian plateau. It links the people and the history of these regions in a most eye opening way. There is coverage of how these migration/invasions impacted the Roman Empire, the Seleucid Empire; where the Arabs came from, and all the cultual collisions between the Mongols, The Chinese, The Arabs, The early empires Of India……all with pertinent dates and names.

FFS. Stinking hot day, really stinking NQ hot day. 3pm clouds over storms build up north south and west, all gave us a wide berth.

Another hot night and I bet around 5am we’ll get something that will add to tomorrows humidity.

Spent the last couple of days digging up 6-7m of water main where I found more pinholes sending a a nice mist of water everywhere. Sourced pipe & new connections and relative plumber hooked it up. Re pressurised the lines minor weeping from one of the connectors.

Lots of swearwords etc and disassembly of said connector. Connecter apparently fine, got to be the line. Back to Reece for a joiner and I watched as a piece of the leftover pipe was spliced into the line. Leaky pipe discarded. Re-pressurisation, no leaks.

Today backfill trench with copious amounts of water. Beers about to follow.

Was cheaper to get a relative on a flight up here for a few days and the part he was only allowed to do took no more than an hour than the quotes I had to get done whenever they had time in the new year. Wouldn’t trade my vocation for quids with the experiences I have had but I imagine if I had of instead done a trade.

Colorado Bans Trump From Running Over Concerns Usual Election Rigging System Could Fail

DENVER, CO — Facing critics over their 4-3 decision to remove Trump from the presidential ballot in 2024, Colorado’s Supreme Court insisted it was a necessary step due to concerns the usual election rigging system could fail.

“I know we have all the normal rigging techniques available to us, but we’re worried that Trump’s lead could grow so much that those efforts will fail to protect our democracy as they did in 2020,” said Justice Richard Gabriel. “Rest assured, we will not rest until we save democracy by making it completely illegal to vote for Trump. You’re welcome, America!”

Bonus Bee –

Democrats Disprove Claims They Will Covertly Rig Election By Rigging It In Plain Sight

AUGUSTA, ME — In a move designed to push back against criticism that they have a track record of rigging elections in secret, Democrats have now adopted a policy of rigging elections in broad daylight so everyone in the country can see it.

“We are being entirely transparent about our election interference,” said Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows after announcing former President Donald Trump will not be allowed on the 2024 primary ballot. “Any wild allegations of covert efforts to rig elections are simply preposterous. As anyone can clearly see, the steps we are taking to interfere with and rig the outcome of our elections are being done in plain sight. This is a win for democracy.”

I voted for the republic in 1999, I will not be voting for a republic any time soon.

It is definitely waning, especially among the young. In a poll this year 25% wanted it abolished. Lowest since records began in 1983.

In 2023 figures show a drop back to similar figures seen in 2021, the lowest on record. 29% said the monarchy was ‘very important’, 26% said it was ‘quite important’, 20% said it was ‘not very important’ and 25% said it was ‘not at all important / abolish’.

three areas the monarchy had to worry about: Scotland, Britain’s ethnic minorities and the young. Fewer than half of people in Scotland said they supported retaining the monarchy. Across Britain, only 40% of 18- to 24-year-olds backed keeping the monarchy, while 37% of people from an ethnic minority did so.

There are enough right wing sheep to keep it going for a while yet so I have no idea why you mentioned the republic.

I’m unvaxxed and had Covid over ANZAC Day, 2022. Didn’t get sick, no increase in temp, had a runny nose and spontaneously coughed for a month or so – locked away for a week. The lock up was good because in enabled me to finish proof reading and finalising my book. No additional Covid concerns to this day…

You don’t support Linda Burney for President?

Bleuchh!!!

I could be persuaded to have one of the Price ladies. Either would do, mother or daughter. But it would never happen.

Constitutional monarchies have been the most stable political systems in the world. Australia is one of the oldest and most stable democracies. Before we change the system, we need to think very hard and long.

Only because they have been around the longest. Charlie, Andrew, and Harry are mediocre and the latter two are a huge stain on the institution. In Britain the monarchy is fading and if it is abolished there it is pointless here. Not even our decision so what’s your point? Dr. BG wants it abolished in Britain but preserved here? Computer says no. Hence my reference to mannequins. The monarchy probably has at least another 50 years in it.

Ah, the good ol’ seventies, when scantily clad bimbages shakin’ it to CCR on primetime braindead FTA commercial television was just completely normal.

A televisual feast, indeed.

Diogenes earlier.

88 per cent of residential aged care homes reported a registered nurse on duty 24/7,

Well, a lot threw up their hands at first because the funding was tied to actual 24/7 coverage for the whole month.
You spend the money on 5-6 nurses to get the coverage and one calls in sick on the 31st and no funding.
They relaxed it to something like 83% coverage which is a bit more achievable.
But now they want to jail voluntary aged care directors for deaths and injuries in aged care homes (with a reverse burden of proof).

John H, I suspect republics have been around longer than constitutional monarchies, and republics all seem to have an expiry date. Even though Charles appears to be a bit of a meathead, the position is more important than the individual.

Monarchies are older than writing. Democracy is a recent phenomenon. The comparison is which is more stable: democracy or monarchy. The problem is that monarchy has been around so long it is very easy to find examples of monarchies going stupid. The position becomes less important with each less capable individual.

It is a very honourable thing to adopt another man’s pussy (with consent of course) and Winston is to be commended for it.
Well done you, Winston.

The oldest type of monarchy is absolute, yet it differs greatly from constitutional monarchies as monarch’s authority is restricted. It provides, in my opinion, a uniting leadership above politics and stability in general.

Switzerland does a pretty good job of showing how democracies can work well over centuries. Pity we don’t follow their model more closely.

Experimental therapy eases Alzheimer’s signs, symptoms in mice

I like what they have done here. Creative and clever, a very interesting way of using immune responses to reduce toxic protein loading and inflammation in the brain.

The next step will be testing this approach in humans. Those close to the study are optimistic.

It should translate well and does have promise. Optimism is warranted. Hopefully this will be rushed into clinical trials. It won’t cure Alz, nothing can, but if used early enough it can potentially very much slow progression. Diagnosis usually occurs after substantial tissue loss and that won’t be recovered because adult mammalian brains produce new cells at very low rates and mostly in specific places; although I have read studies suggesting new neurons can travel some distance.

Sky News This Morning:
“Trump said he would build the wall – it didn’t happen”.
The real story is that he did build the wall, but Biden cancelled the construction before it was finished, and then sold of the remaining materials!

This how the media rewrite history on a daily basis.

Milei was catapulted into place to drag Argentina away from BRICS and to help keep the USD important. It won’t help his country. Argentina is a succession of socialist and capitalist government failures, each doing the thing they do best in screwing up an economy. His efforts won’t succeed. People should temper their enthusiasm. Like they did to Schwarzenegger and Trump, the entrenched bureaucrats will stymie his efforts. Another non-exciting chapter in the history of this screwed up country. There is a paucity of books about how that country went downhill. I think this is because there were bad governments from both sides and the usual Marxists cannot blame just the conservatives.
