You can fine-tune or rearrange a message ad infinitum, but unless you can somehow avoid or remove that distortion filter installed in the brain of the receiver … you’re wasting your time.

The same thing happened after the fall of communism and there was a lot of speculation that it may take up to three generations before the peoples of Eastern Europe shook off their chains took up capitalism. I’m glad to say that on our last tour through Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary in 2019 showed that they were all well and truly part of the West. In fact they seemed more free than what I saw in Sweden and Germany.
People that are turned off by philosophy are generally not philosophically minded and misunderstand what sort of inquiry it entails. Same can be true of any other inquiry.

Epistemology is important in some areas of enquiry. QM, cosmology, neuroscience, psychology, evolutionary theory require practitioners to think more carefully about their methods. They don’t need to read philosophy to do that but it will help some. I wish scientists didn’t reflexively embrace materialism. I don’t like it, I think it has some problems, and I wish there were some prominent philosophers out there challenging it.

An understanding of the philosophy of science would be a good start.
Very insightful. It is why I have long tried to stop embracing a particular political position. In my own areas of interest I often myself dancing across hypotheses. It’s frustrating and can hinder progress but when solutions aren’t convincing we must learn to dance. What I find frustrating about modern debate is the way people deliberately choose to only put forward evidence that suits their argument. Is everyone a lawyer now? Too many people are more interested in winning the argument than knowing the truth.
The trouble with revolutionary movements is that these can unleash hitherto concealed troublemakers which derail the revolution.
Someone said a day or so ago he’s the Australian Howard Hughes. That’s probably an insult to Mr Hughes. So far the only thing Twiggy has succeeded at is digging up dirt and sending it to China. This rent-a-cop arrangement is a complete conflict of interest where everyone assumes the cops are directed by the government when in fact they are beholden to the thugs. This cannot go on.
Besides, why are all these protests approved every second day and both days of the weekend? Knowing full well how they get out of hand surely the best thing would be to cancel approvals and disperse unapproved gatherings?

Nagel and Feser have nothing more to teach me but more importantly their work isn’t widely discussed. I’ve had problems with materialism long before they became prominent. It is the general trend in society at large. I’ve been told these issues are more discussed in Europe than Aus or the USA.
Philosophers also engage in useless avenues of enquiry. Scientists are at least, hopefully, empirically grounded(take that Witten!). That helps prevent them going off on tangents but in active areas of enquiry with data flowing in at the cutting edge there will be blood and many mistakes. That’s the price of progress. A good deal of progress is stumbling forward over the mistakes of others.

Historians can argue how much good luck played in it all but it still takes people to make it happen. For the record, I do not expect him to do the same in renewables (or the Indiana Tearoom for that matter).

Nah, Bear. For the longest time the received wisdom of the ages was that high phos iron ore was unsaleable, as was magnetite. I might’ve suggested to my manager some tentative technical solutions to some of those questions, but my project ideas never went anywhere.
Then, magically, China boomed and they wanted anything with iron in it. Suddenly iron ore with 0.2% P was magically saleable. Overnight magnetite was the bees’ knees. It was a breathtaking market transformation. Twiggy cashed in on this, and good for him for doing so. Take luck when it happens to you. But he is hopeless on anything with even a sniff of technology.
Philosophy of mind doesn’t make sense to me. Nagel was prominent in philosophy in the 70’s but not the broader public debate, that came much later. Even Alan Watts in the 60’s was more prominent than him. I don’t care that consciousness cannot be explained by science. There are many phenomena that can’t be explained by science. So what? Every day news releases about this or that little mystery being solved or partly so. What a waste of effort to write about the limitations of science explaining consciousness when we still don’t understand brain function. That’s like trying to explain electricity without knowing about electrons. In his day they didn’t know about Von Economo neurons or Goldman-Rakic’s optimal dopamine window hypothesis or probably Le Doux’s groundbreaking work on the amygdala but at least they probably knew about Hubel and Weisel’s famous studies on visual perception but to this day we don’t understand visual consciousness. The O’Regan and Noe theoretic account of that is fascinating and often cited but I still struggle to get my head around it. Philosophy of mind is just whistling in the dark. My concerns with materialism have nothing to do with that subject.

No, we stayed at The Ashbee. It was supposed to have been built by Brits, which obviously means it was a little on the boring side. It’s basically at the entrance of the main gig there. The pool area has spectacular views, though. One afternoon, the arseholes kicked us out of the pool area because they were hosting a wedding.
The main square with the black and white tiles has a view med that can’t be replicated. When we were there, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, had his ocean liner parked right in front there.
