Lizzie, people who have always relied on lies will not willingly accept the truth.

The truth is what my people, my ‘gang’ says it is.
What is important is not the content of the message, but the perceived credibility of the message sender.
I may hear the message of an outsider, but when that content reaches my brain for analysis, it will be filtered through a frame or lens installed by the insiders (those who accept me, or at least tell me they do). When that messages passes through the frame/lens, it becomes distorted, and coincidentally reinforces what the insiders have been telling me about outsiders.

You can fine-tune or rearrange a message ad infinitum, but unless you can somehow avoid or remove that distortion filter installed in the brain of the receiver … you’re wasting your time.

Also I mentioned the Argie deep state. Milei may’ve made a dent into that with his public serpent cuts, but I suspect the ones that are left are the hard core and they are the most dangerous bunch. We saw what the US deep state did to Trump. I expect the same or worse in Argentina, once they’ve gotten over the shock of the election tsunami.

My impression of Morrison is that he had virtually no understanding of rural Australia.

I can’t recall any understanding shown of the horrors of the 2018 drought or the subsequent terror generated by the Gosper Mt firestorm.

Precisely!
He has no understanding of anything outside the public service. That stood out unmistakably from Scomo Sunday onward.

1. Labor ran a scare campaign on public sector jobs that still haunts the Liberals and shapes their policy.

2. Newman’s strength was his downfall; his “can do” attitude came to be perceived as arrogance.

As it stands now, if Labor wasn’t sitting on a minerals royalties boon that has allowed them to throw money about (subsidising power bills, for e.g.), they’d be looking at a wipe out.

That will last until the next football match.

The lefties have no solutions.

They have lies. And promises. Lots of promises. Which are lies. But when one side is promising hardship and the other is promising heaven on Earth next week a lot of ordinary people are going to say to themselves as they look in their empty fridge “maybe they will deliver this time?”

The end result of this process is Venezuela, where Chavez and Maduro promised the same thing.

Thousands protest as hunger grows amid Argentine austerity (24 Feb)
Argentina has a history of putsches and coups, and we haven’t seen their deep state in action yet. After all those years with the Kirchners in the big house they must be well entrenched. They’re unlikely to be happy campers right now.

Are these like the anti-Trump protests in the US? I would take them with a grain of salt as there certainly are lots of losers who are not interested in the national context but their own and are stirring the pot.

I am optimistic that the majority of Argentinians have had enough of those quasi Peronistas, the Kirchners, and that they will give Milei a chance.

The same thing happened after the fall of communism and there was a lot of speculation that it may take up to three generations before the peoples of Eastern Europe shook off their chains took up capitalism. I’m glad to say that on our last tour through Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary in 2019 showed that they were all well and truly part of the West. Newman attempted to decimate the public service & paid the price.

That was his problem, he only tried to decimate it not exterminate it. But none of us realized back then just how captured the reins of state are. Trump illuminated that and it’s the same everywhere. Argentina is no different, certainly not after so many years of the Kirchners.

Azimov’s concept of psychohistory has a lot going for it. There is an immense inertia in human affairs. In his trilogy Bel Riose (ie. Belisarius) tried to turn back the course of the inertia and failed, despite being a charismatic leader. Milei is Bel Riose. Trump is Bel Riose.

I think he is way off base on that issue. I couldn’t care less about arcane debates that have been going on for centuries because if the issue hasn’t been solved by now the question is the problem. That highlights a fundamental problem with philosophy and is why so many are turned off by the subject.

People that are turned off by philosophy are generally not philosophically minded and misunderstand what sort of inquiry it entails. Same can be true of any other inquiry.

Epistemology is important in some areas of enquiry. QM, cosmology, neuroscience, psychology, evolutionary theory require practitioners to think more carefully about their methods. They don’t need to read philosophy to do that but it will help some. I wish scientists didn’t reflexively embrace materialism. I don’t like it, I think it has some problems, and I wish there were some prominent philosophers out there challenging it.

Very insightful. It is why I have long tried to stop embracing a particular political position. In my own areas of interest I often myself dancing across hypotheses. It’s frustrating and can hinder progress but when solutions aren’t convincing we must learn to dance. What I find frustrating about modern debate is the way people deliberately choose to only put forward evidence that suits their argument. Is everyone a lawyer now? Too many people are more interested in winning the argument than knowing the truth.

Lizard news (The Hun):

A tiny critically endangered lizard has stalled tens of thousands of homes being built in Melbourne’s west, which property developers say is costing them more than $1m to investigate.

The rediscovery of the reviously believed extinct Victorian grassland earless dragon — which last year was hailed by Melbourne Zoo as a discovery akin to the Tasmanian tiger — has prompted a joint investigation by the federal and state government to help conserve the species’ habitat.

But the lengthy process has paused a series of major developments in the Bacchus Marsh region which are set to increase housing supply and provide thousands of new jobs.

And:

Australian government mapping estimates the rare reptile’s habitat could stretch from the Bellarine Peninsula all the way to Sunbury on Melbourne’s outer fringe.

This includes the Northern Geelong Growth Area where the Lovely Banks Development Group is set to build about 15,000 homes.

In all, the piece claims 310,000 homes may not be built because of the lizard. Who’s backing the ‘conservation experts’ hired by the gummint, one asks?

Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell said: “The government must not cower to pressure from powerful developers and should take the same approach when it comes to kangaroos and koalas who are routinely decimated by developers.”

Golly jeepers. Thankfully there’s not a housing crisis.

Um, no, Bear. Technology was everything. I’m amazed it was eventually made to work…two bankrupt companies later. But it’s never achieved better than about 80% of rated capacity.

I sat through a paper once at a conference by some materials and equipment specialists. The Murrin autoclave let-down valves were surviving four (4) on-off cycles before they dissolved. They cost a hundred grand each. Eventually the tech guys and Murrin worked out a coating that allowed them to survive a useful amount of time. That’s how it was: Twiggy went in with wavy arm gestures and hope. Other people solve these problems in technical testwork and piloting. Not Twiggy. He scaled up from a one gallon autoclave to a 55,000 tpa plant in one heroic leap. I used to have a copy of the conference paper saying how scaling up 80,000 times is no biggie these days. that was from the mid nineties I think, it was a Sherritt paper. What a costly mess.

Iron ore is about as simple as it gets. His forays into stupid green tech are going to make Murrin look like the work of a genius.

Corella mum who broke my all time record yesterday came back again this arvo and did the same thing. She seems to have three screaming kids, so can understand her desperation. I may have made a convert.

Have we had a vote on immigration numbers recently?

Milei defeated his Peronist opponent by more than 10 points.

A Belisarius has often tried to reverse the decay. It never works. I wish Milei every success and I hope he succeeds, but I’d bet against it. The forces of decay are too powerful. It’s not just people, it’s deep seated assumptions that most are incapable of questioning.

I don’t buy that.

Not in any order.

The first Hawke government was possibly the most reformist in history, and it occurred at a time when this country was really going down the sink.

Britain was a basket case when Thatcher came to power, and even now, yes, even now, it’s the 6th largest economy in the world.

There comes a time when people realize enough is enough and change direction.

The aftermath of Oct 7th caused two presidents of the two major US universities to “resign.”

Stanford has told a permanent camp of pro-Pali on campus they had 24 hours to disband or they would be expelled.

Applications for major US universities are down.

Yes, I suppose it could be.

It could also be that the elderly man who actually lived in that house was a mind reader. Or not. Finding a naked man in his grand-daughter’s wardrobe – ‘oh, of course he’s in the wrong house probably, the silly duffer.’

One must deal with what is in front of them at the time. If reports are correct, then an elderly and most likely frail man with no chance of physically removing a bloke from his young grand-daughter’s room, but knowing that there are drug-enhanced and/or pissed violent idiots everywhere and that he – or his grand-daughter – would be unable to counter a physical attack….

I would still contend – if reports are true – that the response was proportionate.

It seems a bit strange that a bloke intent on molesting a girl in her bed would strip naked first.

Rolfe is fortunate in coming from a wealthy family who can pay for top shelf lawyers. Another cop with no resources would have been pulped long ago.

Epistemology is important in some areas of enquiry. QM, cosmology, neuroscience, psychology, evolutionary theory require practitioners to think more carefully about their methods. They don’t need to read philosophy to do that but it will help some.

Maybe here and there but most, who are scientific labourers, won’t. The edge cases may depending on their problem but I think some metaphysics would be more useful if only to avoid pointless questions or avenues of inquiry.

I wish scientists didn’t reflexively embrace materialism. I don’t like it, I think it has some problems, and I wish there were some prominent philosophers out there challenging it.

There are, Nagel and Oderberg, for instance, Feser also; the latter could certainly point you towards others too.

Nagel and Feser have nothing more to teach me but more importantly their work isn’t widely discussed. I’ve had problems with materialism long before they became prominent. It is the general trend in society at large. I’ve been told these issues are more discussed in Europe than Aus or the USA.

Philosophers also engage in useless avenues of enquiry. Scientists are at least, hopefully, empirically grounded(take that Witten!). That helps prevent them going off on tangents but in active areas of enquiry with data flowing in at the cutting edge there will be blood and many mistakes. That’s the price of progress. A good deal of progress is stumbling forward over the mistakes of others.

Campbell Newman did not lose the 2015 election because of sacking public servants. That is a self serving narrative.

A lot of Brisbane seats are historically ALP, stuffed with Irish Catholics and Victorian refugees seeking a warmer climate. But even that natural return to normal would not have been enough.

No, the thing to remember is that after the 2012 victory Clive Palmer rocked up with a draft of special legislation that gave his mining interests a leg up over the competition, and Newman said no, we aren’t the white shoe brigade.

And thus in revenge Palmer established the Palmer United Party and campaigned against Newman, promising all sorts of stuff he had no plans or need to meet. With One Nation and the Katters, all three campaigned against the LNP. And in an optional preferences ballot, a campaign of “just vote 1 PUP, or ON, or KAP” tipped the balance and a minority ALP government was formed with KAP support.

It is no accident Palaszczuk reintroduced compulsory preferences to harvest green votes who were also inclined to just vote 1.

Twiggy took big bets on ore reserves and mining techniques that both majors and others said were uneconomic. Prior to China iron ore was sold on contract with price negotiations consisting of an annual flight to Tokyo and being told what price reduction was required that year. Twiggy deserves huge credit for getting FMG off the ground. A number of 2nd tier iron ore operations have fallen over over the years. Historians can argue how much good luck played in it all but it still takes people to make it happen. For the record, I do not expect him to do the same in renewables (or the Indiana Tearoom for that matter).

Nah, Bear. For the longest time the received wisdom of the ages was that high phos iron ore was unsaleable, as was magnetite. I might’ve suggested to my manager some tentative technical solutions to some of those questions, but my project ideas never went anywhere.

Then, magically, China boomed and they wanted anything with iron in it. Suddenly iron ore with 0.2% P was magically saleable. Overnight magnetite was the bees’ knees. It was a breathtaking market transformation. Twiggy cashed in on this, and good for him for doing so. Take luck when it happens to you. But he is hopeless on anything with even a sniff of technology.

Nagel has been a central figure in the philosophy of mind, and since at least the 70s so I doubt two and three. If this is a general trend, it has more to do with inertia than anything else.

Philosophers also engage in useless avenues of enquiry.

Of course.

Philosophy of mind doesn’t make sense to me. Nagel was prominent in philosophy in the 70’s but not the broader public debate, that came much later. Even Alan Watts in the 60’s was more prominent than him. I don’t care that consciousness cannot be explained by science. There are many phenomena that can’t be explained by science. So what? Every day news releases about this or that little mystery being solved or partly so. What a waste of effort to write about the limitations of science explaining consciousness when we still don’t understand brain function. That’s like trying to explain electricity without knowing about electrons. In his day they didn’t know about Von Economo neurons or Goldman-Rakic’s optimal dopamine window hypothesis or probably Le Doux’s groundbreaking work on the amygdala but at least they probably knew about Hubel and Weisel’s famous studies on visual perception but to this day we don’t understand visual consciousness. The O’Regan and Noe theoretic account of that is fascinating and often cited but I still struggle to get my head around it. Philosophy of mind is just whistling in the dark. My concerns with materialism have nothing to do with that subject.

What’s Chat GBT’s IQ level. Hard to be believe, but this substack dude says:

I was surprised by the following results.

I gave IQ tests to ChatGPT-4 and Google’s “Gemini Advanced.” First, I gave them this IQ test by Mensa Norway.

I was inspired to do so after listening to a Dwarkesh podcast which noted that the big AI benchmark tests are merely “good tests of memorization, not of intelligence,” and that the questions they give AIs are things like:

Q: Who was president of the United States when Bill Clinton was born?

A: Harry Truman

He goes on to note,

Why is it impressive that a model trained on internet text full of random facts happens to have a lot of random facts memorized? … why does that in any way indicate intelligence or creativity?

That’s a good point. Most AI power comes from it’s enormous database, and pattern-matching. How intelligent is AI, really?

I have a website (TrackingAI.org) that already administers a political survey to AIs every day. So I could easily give the AIs a real intelligence test, and track that over time, too.

As I started manually giving AIs IQ tests, my main concern was that they might get everything right. After all, they’re great at computer coding, math, essays, and art. They can read images, and the test questions are all publicly available online.

But then I ran the tests.

Both AIs got visual-spacial IQ scores under 85, a level at which the Norway Mensa tests tells you this:

Google’s “Gemini Advanced” performed so poorly and gave up on so many questions that I decided it wasn’t worth further testing.

ChatGPT-4 showed a bit of reasoning in its answers, so I gave it another quiz, a Swedish Mensa IQ test which allows for scoring all the way down to an IQ of 75. However, ChatGPT-4 was still un-scorable, coming in below 75:

On a day when the state’s top cop Commissioner Karen Webb was already under fire for faux pars during media interviews, she thanked alleged killer Lamarre-Condon.

“This information did come with the assistance of the accused for which we are very grateful and I’m sure the families are very grateful,” Commissioner Webb said.

2. Waits inside a TV studio until a camera crew outside go away, while also claiming that she already had enough pressers to go to that day; and

3. Cries injustice that NSW Plod have been ‘uninvited’ (ha) to the Homo Parade.

Demonstrably well out of her depth. When she got the top job she conducted a massive cull of brass she perceived as competition. The rank and file, and the remainder of the brass will be ropeable.

Taormina is very pretty, even when covered in cloud.
The Greco Roman theatre is pretty amazing despite being much pillaged over the years.
Mid 19th century grand touring put the place back on the map, though visitors then came up on donkey back. A favourite of Wilde, Wagner and a few other notables.
The road is still very narrow, the buses take the lot on the hairpins, with a warning beep on the way into them.

The cathedral is a little different, small, built like a castle on the outside, no side chapels but three marble altars on each side on the outside naves, and they’ve managed to hang on to at least some of their gothic artworks
Taormina is also very tourist trappish.
I paid €1.50 for a coffee and €1 for a cornetto at my favourite place in Palermo, here it’s €3.50 and €2 and every second shop is spilling over with majolica, teatowels and tablecloths, some of which have been fashioned into dresses.
There is even a Philipe Patak watch shop, for your better class of tourist.
I’m having lunch (first proper pizza since I’ve been in Italy) where I ought to have a view of snow capped Etna but all I see are clouds, no mountain.
I can see the Bay, so that’s something. I might walk back down around the other road, understatement that that’s not so difficult.
JC did you stay at the pioneering hotel next to the theatre, it’s closed for winter, reopening on 7 March but it does have a pool looking over everything.

A question btw on the police for palli demonstrations.
They aren’t attending as independent contractors but as part of an official police contingent paid for the organisers?
Sounds like overtime one day, sick leave the next.

JC did you stay at the pioneering hotel next to the theatre, it’s closed for winter, reopening on 7 March but it does have a pool looking over everything.

No, we stayed at The Ashbee. It was supposed to have been built by Brits, which obviously means it was a little on the boring side. It’s basically at the entrance of the main gig there. The pool area has spectacular views, though. One afternoon, the arseholes kicked us out of the pool area because they were hosting a wedding.

The main square with the black and white tiles has a view med that can’t be replicated. When we were there, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, had his ocean liner parked right in front there.

There’s a square with the police station on the left as you enter it, and if I recall correctly, there’s an electronic notice board. We were lazing around, walking slowly, and this prick was casually driving this shitty little car, hit the back of my leg behind the knee. It freaking hurt, too. The pos of shit knew what he’d done and kept on motoring along. It was the slowest hit-and-run you in world history I reckon. I limped along, caught up to the prick, and screamed at him at the top of my lungs in Italian to get out of the freaking car. He started apologizing, which kind of disarmed me a little. He knew he’d hit me, but he kept driving. I was going to drag him by the collar to the cop station but wifey talked me out of it.

Not necessarily. It may very from one jurisdiction to another, & by the type and scale of police presence required.

If it is ex-roster, it usually is an independent, albeit approved, deal between the payer & the police officer(s).

I’ve never seen it anything but a deal, or series of parallel deals, between the organiser & the individual officers. The police roster & paymaster is not involved.

(Sometimes this is paid in cash or kind (eg beer) & nothing is mentioned to the ATO)

The grass median strip between UWA and the residential colleges has been known to be the final resting place for more than a few over the years. It happens.

Memories of misspent years at Tommy More.

Someone said years ago that if women ran the world, there would be no more wars.

The reality is that if women ran the world there would be ten times as many wars and associated cockups, caused largely by feelz and that another ‘leader’ wore the same outfit to a cocktail party.

Don’t laugh, KD. I’ve seen a Ward brought to the brink of closure by two factions of nurses who refused to get on together. And it started with a drinkies after work party.
