The history text, in use in Japanese schools in the late 1960’s, covered the Second World War in one sentence, followed by two pages on the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
A friend commented on the Hiroshima memorial when they visited, and his dad was in Changi…
Paraphrased… ” One morning for no reason the Americans decided to drop a bomb on Hiroshima”…
His wife had to drag him out when he started “I have never seen so much mendacious bullshit in my life” in a very loud voice, a group of Brits supported his comments, and together outside the educated a visiting Japanese school group on the evil their grandparents committed. Cut their trip short and came home early.
What was the name of the long lost Cat who reckoned he put a statement next to his signature in the Hiroshima memorial visitor’s book : “that’ll teach you not to try on your Greater South-East Asia Co- Prosperity Sphere”?

Actually, I should add to my treatise above, that the repugnance toward values like education, work, discipline etc is fortified by the insistence that they are โwhiteโ, and to embrace them is to sell out black culture by trying to be white.

Reading “The Eagle and the Rising Sun” – General Douglas MacArthur was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his “conspicuous leadership in preparing the Philippine Islands to resist conquest, and his calm judgement in each crisis which inspired his troops. The citation failed to mention his loss of the Philippines led to the worst disaster in U.S. military history, and the surrender of 78,000 American and Filipino Prisoners of war to the Japanese. (Page 247.)
FDR really, really, didn’t want MacArthur back in the US, as the Republican candidate for the 1944 election. He was willing to sacrifice the lives and health of thousands of US service personnel, and tens of thousands of Filipino civilians, to avoid that prospect. A Medal of Honor? Small change, approved by the Congress, an easy deal.
It’s totally unfair that Adm Kimmel and Gen Short were totally blamed for not being ready for a surprise attack when Dugout Doug had 24 hours notice of what happened at PH, and between them MacA and Sutherland managed to get their aircraft wiped out on the ground. The Japanese should have awarded Sutherland a high decoration for blocking Gen Brereton, the air commander from seeing MacA.
The Japanese should have awarded MacA the Supreme order of the Chrysanthemum because his actions shortened the Phillipines campaign by months and reduduced Japanese casualties by the thousands, Bataan and Corregidor excepted, and even with those 2 , he forked those 2 up so badly the men suffered so much more than was necessary.

The entire anti argument is nonsense, from timelines to the inherent dangers.
Anyone who has travelled, and not even extensively, has seen the nuclear power plants in Europe and elsewhere. These in the most densely populated areas on Earth.
The last garbage โargumentโ involved Fukushima, pretending the plant disintegrated because faulty, rather than by tsunami. The disastrous siting of the place was completely ignored.

Calli, the designers knew all about the siting of Fukushima and in fact the sea wall etc stood up to greater than the worst design case. The problem was a tsunami much worse than the design case and failure to ensure the back up generators would not flood. The again they wouldn’t have if it had merely been the worst assumed design case. Sometimes you are sol.
Down know who the downticker effwit is but next time you fly on an airliner, think about how when the aircraft is designed, certain worst case assumptions are made about meteorological conditions. Now and again worse than assumed worst case conditions can be encountered.
Like the Brit 707 freighter over the Alps years ago in a bad storm. IIRC one engine fell off and one failed and the aircraft had severe other damage. The flight engineer thought they were certain to die so began taking photos of the damage so the investigators could know what went wrong. They did get it on the ground at Istres, the French flight test facility. The crew were getting over the near death experience while the commandant and his test pilots looked at the damage. The Commandant got his pilots together and marched them into the room where the crew were and his pilots lined up and saluted.

And even the total meltdown at Chernobyl caused relatively few deaths, many of those the result of the Russian approach to controlling the fire, a mix of brute force and blind courage. The men who flew the helicopters to moderate the reaction (dropping boron, IIRC) knew that they were doomed, but did the job anyway.

Anyone who has travelled, and not even extensively, has seen the nuclear power plants in Europe and elsewhere. These in the most densely populated areas on Earth.
For what it is worth, I suspect that the high numbers of reactors in Europe, combined with Chernobyl, convinced the Soviets of the futility of invading NATO. The idea of fighting even a conventional war, with thousands of hyper velocity armour piercing anti-tank rounds being fired in every direction, was plainly suicidal. Within five years, the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact were in the dustbin of history, where they deserved to go.

Why wouldnโt Russia target them if they are in theatre supporting the enemy?
I don’t know the formula but a bunch of dead NATO chaps will increase the likelihood of more USD wouldn’t it?
That’s the last thing the Russians want isn’t it?
The sooner the Ukraine runs out of OPM, the sooner a DMZ can be put in place & the carnage can stop.
The problem for the current crop of Western leaders, etc is that they completely or substantially misunderstand the Russian position and so can’t comprehend, or refuse to accept, what this will look like.
No, what Russia wanted was rejected in early April ’22, so the closest thing to that will involve the neutralisation of Ukraine by the degradation of its armed forces; in other words, reducing it to a gelding.
Whenever I hear ‘soft on drugs’ I tend to become a little agitated.
I have spent the past five days in Adelaide with a woman who was confronting the ultimate outcome of addiction. Her son was assaulted and pushed down a flight of stairs by fellow residents of an Adelaide public housing building devoted to accomodation for societal detritus. He is in a coma.
Police say that he was attacked because fellow residents believed that he had a ‘stash’.
Why he was in Adelaide and not in QLD near his Mum was apparently due to his predilection for shacking up with aboriginal women who the junkies love apparently because they come with money. My briefer told me that he had once turned up at his Mum’s place with one of these dollies in tow. The result was predictable.
She was not unknown to our service club. In no way was she on top of life. All four kids were disasters to various extents. She was not a particularly nice person, but she was deserving of support because she had no other source of help.
So I found myself on a flight to Adelaide with a woman who wept all the way and with no understanding of my utter incompetence to confront the world that I was about to experience.
In summary:
Her siblings. All walked away except for one brother who obviously held her in contempt but threw himself at the problem.
Her kids. MIA.
Medical people: First class and tireless. I asked at what point they will give up? “We won’t”.
Police: Pretty good, but the family liaison woman made things worse in my view.
Public Housing organisations: Pigs.
Centerlink: I have no idea what they were talking about. They were suspicious of my presence and told me so.
Social workers: They were very good. One told me firmly to keep my distance or I would become caught up. “You are just the taxi driver”. Good advice. She also said that there was no solution. “If he survives, NDIS will take over and she will return to QLD.
A Catholic welfare organisation: Alerted by a cousin apparently. They took over organising the cleaning of his putrid flat and dealing with the public housing creeps.
NDIS: Creeps.
Me: Bewildered. I won’t do this again, I’m way out of my depth.
All those people, all that effort and emotion, and all that money because of frikn drugs.

Victorian police are investigating โsickeningโ footage of Eddie Bettsโs children and friends targeted by racial abuse as the premier slammed the incident and the AFL world came out in force for its former champion
Indigenous great Mr Betts, who played for Carlton and Adelaide, shared the video to Instagram on Thursday night, which showed a car slowly driving past his Victorian home at about 8:30pm where kids were playing basketball, yelling the N-word multiple times.
โAboriginal kids deserve to be able to play safely, free from racism and abuse over the fence,โ Mr Betts said.
โWe are not even safe in our own homes. If you know who this is please let me them know that Iโm open to having a chat about how much this hurts our kids.โ
Victoria Police confirmed on Friday afternoon it had received โinformationโ in relation to the incident and was currently investigating, urging anyone who knew more to contact Crime Stoppers.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said that there was no place for racism in the state, saying her heart went out to the Betts family and children.

We had a whole Royal Commission that found it was the banksโ fault that a customer could not say no when offered a loan. – and no one contested this finding because of fear.
Now. it is the banks who should check whether the applicant is lying on income, lying on other debts, lying on other assets.

It is a bankโs purpose to offer credit. Whether the customer takes that credit on the agreed terms is their business.

Army ends beard ban, by royal commandKing gives approval for soldiers to grow facial hair โ but with strict rules on length and shape Larisa Brown
, Defence Editor
Thursday March 28 2024, 10.35pm GMT, The Times
Soldiers and officers can finally grow beards while serving in the army in a policy change that required the Kingโs approval.
Beards must be neat and are subject to review, explained the British Armyโs most senior non-commissioned officer in a four-minute video message to troops.
According to the policy, only a โfull set beardโ is allowed. The length must be between 2.5mm and 25.5mm (one inch) and must be trimmed off the cheekbones and neck. There must be โno patchy or uneven growthโ and โno exaggerated coloursโ.
The new guidance on beardsโ length and shape
Warrant Officer Class 1 Paul Carney said the new policy would come into effect immediately to allow soldiers to stop shaving over the Easter holidays. โGetting to an outcome has taken a bit longer than expected due to the larger number of stakeholders that were involved, including His Majesty the King, our politicians and our allies.
โCGS [chief of the general staff] has taken account of your views and has decided the appearance policy will change with our officers and soldiers being allowed to grow beards,โ he said.
Carney said that โthe beards have to be neatโ and โour standards canโt stopโ. The beards will be inspected once troops return from Easter leave. It is understood that the King approved the decision on Thursday.

All those people, all that effort and emotion, and all that money because of frikn drugs.
Most people have no idea of the resources/time and money consumed by one dysfunctional family.
We had a pair of junkies with a couple of kids back when I had the food shop. Wed give the kids a huge pile of leftovers once a week 2-3 kgs of the stuff.
Youd almost call it ‘facilitating’ the parents, except there was zero chance any money was being diverted from food to drugs, they hoovered everything.
Provided with a unit, it was almost completely bare, no tv/table etc, just a couple of mattresses on the floor, no cooking or even eating utensils.
About twice weekly visits from child protection.
Plus 2 or 3 other government / private charity/monitoring mobs as well.
A constant hum of people around them.
There’ve been an awful number of ‘coincidences’ these past few years. (I hope that Shin Bet and other agencies have been meticulous in identifying anyone appearing in those photos).

Opt out while you can, or accept that you’re giving them the power to control individual appliances in your home.
Whatever you do don’t get a smart meter. We’ve been threatened. F off. Over estimated several times. Keep a check on the meter reading. We were overcharged $1400 over several bills. Remember the old meter will run slow as it gets older.
How do you read a smart meter ..? .. mine is about the size of a usb flash drive and attached the house power switch box .. no dials just a connecting wire into the switchbox …… they took the dials setup away when they installed the unit …….
No. An older leccy meter will not run slower as it gets older. It will just be more inaccurate. If you want an accurate, actual reading, a smart meter will give you that.

The Doge of Venice was the highest role of authority within the Republic of Venice (697 CE to 1797 CE). The word “Doge” originates from the Latin word “Dux,” which translates to “leader” or “Duke.”
The Doge of Venice acted as both the head of state and head of the Venetian oligarchy. Doges were elected for life through a complex voting process.
I think Venice had its own (non-virtual) coinage.

Calls are growing to extend the length and area of the two-week curfew for children under 18 in Alice Springs to give residents some โrespiteโ, as community ยญfigures say they are losing hope in other short or medium-term ยญsolutions to stop riots and violence in the red centre.
As the curfew came into effect on Thursday night, three boys aged 12, 13 and 17 were arrested just outside the Alice Springs curfew zone after allegedly threatening residents with a firearm and stealing two vehicles.
Alice Springs Mayor Matt Paterson said the sheer number of police required for the curfew operation meant โit canโt be foreverโ but there should be an extension if it works to reduce crime.
โThe level of anxiety the other day with the riots was something Iโve never experienced in the community before โฆ If it works then, yes, I would suggest they should keep it in,โ he said.
โIn the past two weeks, two people have lost their lives, and a 16-year-old was horrendously bashed in the middle of the street. If it saves someoneโs life, we canโt measure that.โ
After more than 100 people ยญrioted in Alice Springs and cornered one of the townโs most popular pubs on Tuesday, which police say they did not have the resources to control, Northern Territory Chief Minister Eva Lawler vowed to send 58 more police officers to clear kids into homes or government facilities between 6pm and 6am.
Mr Paterson called for the federal government to step in when the curfew lifts, saying the region needs to get more resources from somewhere.
โThe police are here for a short time and what happens then?โ he said.
Action for Alice founder Darren Clark said there were โno short-term solutionsโ to curbing the youth crime problem.
โBut we needed some respite,โ he added. โItโs a long, long, long-term fix to get these young kids educated, get them into safe homes, into employment. I donโt think it can be stopped in the ยญinterim or in the short term.โ
Independent MLA Robin Lambley said the curfew in Alice needed to be extended for at least three months and across the whole town.
โThere is now a displacement of the problem into residential areas in town. Itโs just moving out. We need a curfew across the whole town, not just out in the suburbs.โ
Ms Lambley called for a full audit of government-funded organisations on the ground, which she said werenโt held to account.
โThis is political. The fact the government doesnโt choose to question the delivery of services by government-funded organisations, they donโt want to lose support of big, powerful organisations in Alice Springs,โ she said.
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services chair Karly Warner said curfews simply pushed youth crime beyond the borders and โout of viewโ.
โPolicies that result in children โฆ being over-policed is a problem, not a solution. They are dangerous, and there is a potential for this to result in further tragedy for the community and for children,โ she said. โWe need to prioritise support for children โฆ which includes making sure they have a safe place to go, making sure there is adequate housing, and ยญreducing overcrowding.โ
The riots in town erupted after a funeral was held on Tuesday for an 18-year-old man who had been killed in a car crash earlier this month. Ms Warner said had there been community supports in place following the funeral, the riots could have been stopped.
Geoff Gallop, the last premier to introduce a curfew on children entering Perthโs Northbridge entertainment district after dark in 2003, said the success or failure of Alice Springs policy depended on whether authorities followed up on why the children breaching curfews were out on the street to begin with, and whether their homes were safe to return to.
Former NT Labor MP Scott McConnell said getting children to attend school was still not being prioritised.
โMost press releases are about the need for more police officers,โ he said. โWe canโt recruit, train and retain police to those roles, so we need a different approach.

Brisbane Lions players have split from their partners and the club has held a crisis meeting over an end of season trip to Vegas.
The winless Lions called the meeting of their leaders late on Good Friday to discuss revelations that rifts occurred on that holiday to the United States.
The Herald Sun understands that one of the members of the travelling party accidentally uploaded a WhatsApp group chat to iCloud on his Apple Phone.
That personโs partner accessed the group chat back home in Australia and read messages that detailed what was happening in the US.
Whoopsie. What goes on the trip, stays on the trip.
On a footy trip quite some years back, a young bloke decided to pull out a (Polaroid) camera out of his bag to capture some – reasonably harmless, by the way – shenanigans on the bus.
A couple of clips around the ear from the team’s full back and the camera being slung out the window sorted that out.
Milestone! I think I started commenting at Sinc’s around 2007 or thereabouts. That’s seventeen years ago. The world has got steadily crazier ever since.

โA-bomb saga โOppenheimerโ finally opens in Japanโ
Yes, but they will never know the truth of how their so called soldiers treated anyone who wasn’t Japanese in WW2. Never ever.

Wrong team.
The proliferation argument about civilian nuclear power is a crock.
Any governement which wants nuclear weapons will acquire them irrespective of any civilian nuclear program.
It seems every young man whether US black or Australian aboriginal just wants to be a rapper.
Maybe a way out for them? I don’t know. But hopefully they are not wrecking the Joint.

Particularly the Thai comfort-trannies, eh?
And you speak from some experience?
Well yes calli, but you’re not taking into account the ideology.
Calli re nuclear reactor safety.
….a mix of brute force and blind courage. The men who flew the helicopters to moderate the reaction (dropping boron, IIRC) knew that they were doomed, but did the job anyway.

That’s the last thing the Russians want isn’t it?
The sooner the Ukraine runs out of OPM, the sooner a DMZ can be put in place & the carnage can stop.
That’s a reasonable third-party approach. It lets Putin save face but it cruels his ambition to rebuild the Russian Empire.
That’s more or less my view but it assumes Putin is interested in such a resolution of the conflict.
The problem for the current crop of Western leaders, etc is that they completely or substantially misunderstand the Russian position and so can’t comprehend, or refuse to accept, what this will look like.
Cede all of Ukraine to Putin?
That would make Chamberlain look resolute.
And it would leave Putin with an insurgency on his hands.
No, what Russia wanted was rejected in early April ’22, so the closest thing to that will involve the neutralisation of Ukraine by the degradation of its armed forces; in other words, reducing it to a gelding.
Don’t worry, the Russian position has got nothing to do with what Russians want, let alone Ukrainians.
…don’t worry, what the Russian government wants, and can achieve, are completely different things.
They are achieving it as we speak.

Army ends beard ban, by royal commandKing gives approval for soldiers to grow facial hair โ but with strict rules on length and shape
Larisa Brown
, Defence Editor

That was a bit of an experiment to see if I could put up a photo directly. I worked! But trying to line them all up was hard, doing strange contortions with the camera and my arm to see if I could get them all in frame. Didn’t work, but I had some fun in the attempt.

Looking at my visiting Kookas at the moment. Will not touch any food thrown to them. Small lizards, grass grubs and assorted insects is all they’ll touch. Three at the moment but as it gets darker another three usually arrive. The freeloading maggies are nowhere to be seen.

‘Smart’ Meters.
I’ve received an email from my electrickery provider stating they would upgrade my ‘trickery meter to a ‘smart’ meter. Ho hum.
I’m inclined to opt out, however there was an implication that estimated readings may occur as a result of rejecting a ‘smart’ meter. The latter also comes with an as-yet-unquantified increase in costs (on top of the recent increases).
Any thoughts please?
Cheers.
(I trust all are as happy and healthy as possible. I’ve been busy with a new job, which is certainly a positive; my dodgy knees can’t take the pole dancing any longer).
I’ve had one for at least 3 years .. noticed no real difference in usage on the bills only the increase in cost cos pricing ……….
Thanks, Shatterzzz. My concern is the greater ease with which the grubbermint will be able to cut off my supply should they realise how deeply I loathe them and their inbred species.

Trying to work out whether the rent a cops were being a hindrance here. Some filmed footage would be great as I’ve seen overzealous security inflame situations in the past.

I like the Lady singer better. Do you have her phone number as I have a TARDIS – Time Machine.

Cheers, GreyRanga. I’m not keen on giving the state more control over my life, but thought I’d ask the old and the bold for their own experiences.
No. An older leccy meter will not run slower as it gets older. It will just be more inaccurate. If you want an accurate, actual reading, a smart meter will give you that.

Alice Springs curfew โneeds to be longer and widerโ
By joanna panagopoulos
and paul garvey
Oh God. It has Frank Thring in it!
