By chance I called my Walgett client to see how planting is going for them. They were worriedly waiting for news of their son who thankfully missed being in the area by less than five minutes.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb is yet to make any public remarks on the mass stabbing event in Bondi Junction but is being briefed on developments from senior officers this evening.
Ms Webb was known to have attended Randwick Racecourse on Saturday as a guest of Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys. The commissioner is understood to have left the function during the afternoon but was notably absent during a press conference held outside Waverley Police Station around 6pm.
An official with knowledge of the Randwick event said the commissioner “left early”. The police briefing was provided by Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke, commander of the Central Metropolitan Region, which takes in the suburb where the stabbing occurred.
A/C Cooke ended the press conference after numerous questions, citing a need to brief the police executive, which includes Ms Webb, on the information at hand.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is speaking after five people were stabbed to death and eight injured at a Bondi Junction shopping centre.
The prime minister made the comments after being briefed by Australian Federal Police chief Reece Kershaw and Australian Security Intelligence Organisation director-general Mike Burgess about the attacks any other danger to the public.
Albanese called the police officer who shot the assailant a hero for going alone to save lives, while he also praised the doctors, nurses, paramedics and bystanders who responded to the emergency.

Hours before her life was cruelly taken from her in a Sydney shopping centre, new mum Ash Good was posting a video to her Instagram of her nine-month-old baby Harriet smiling in her car seat.
The sun beams on the little girl’s face as she nibbles on a piece of bread and the song My Girl by The Temptations plays.
“I’ve got sunshine, on a cloudy day. When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May,” the band sings.
Less than eight hours later, Ms Good and Harriet were shopping in Westfield Bondi Junction, in Sydney’s east, when a man armed with a hunting knife launched a violent stabbing attack through the shopping centre.
Horrified witnesses spoke of how the 40-year-old attacker, shot dead by police on Saturday afternoon, targeted Harriet and then turned on Ms Good, stabbing her as well.
In a final act of heroism, Ms Good ran to two brothers in the shop and begged them to take her baby. They used clothes from the nearby racks to try and stem the bleeding on both the mother and daughter but Ms Good’s injuries were too severe.
She died in St Vincent’s Hospital on Saturday night at the age of 38.

Shopping centre security were conspicuous by their absence, at least in the images made public. I hadn’t even thought of it until reminded just now. As to what could they do when unarmed, there was film of one guy grabbing a white plastic chair and sallying forth.
It is possible that there were only a couple of shopping centre security staff on duty and therefore they were calling police and appraising them of the situation before they could do much else.

This will depress shopping in person even further. If the big shopping centre are not made secure they will disappear.
I don’t know about Westfield but my observation of store security is Indians checking receipts at JBHIFi, watching for shoplifters at Coles and nice girls who help you find lost grandchildren.
I don’t expect them to rush in to tackle men wielding big knives.

Westfield Bondi Junction is my local shopping centre.
I would only go there on average once a week and rarely at peak times.
Never on weekend unless it’s to go to Coles bright & early.
You do see security often at the Oxford street entrances on either side of Oxford street, under where you saw those glassed in walkways that go over the street.
But as I’m not there at peak times, I have zero idea of how much security is there then.
You often see plod walking around the street mall a block away (towards town).
There’s always a few street people walking around there.

I have made this comment at C.L.’s blog as well, I don’t think the killer was spaced out on drugs. Wouldn’t he be in a frenzy, stabbing everyone in sight? From the images shown he seemed to steer clear of large, imposing males. Going for soft targets like women and children was his aim.
Iran Launches Test Attack with Slow Drones
Iran has launched a drone attack on Israel that appears to be testing Israel’s defenses. The IDF has stated that it would take hours for the drones to even reach the country. Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was prepared for a ‘“direct attack from Iran.” Tehran confirmed the action, with Iranian state TV reporting: “A significant drone operation by the IRGC against targets inside occupied territories has started.” Biden was called back from Delaware where he hides 40% of the time.
These Iranian drones are slow-moving. Iran’s defense ministry announced the start of mass production of drones in 2018, named the Mohajer-6 tactical and combat unmanned aerial vehicle. Their drones began back in the 1980s, but they were used for surveillance at that time. This appears to be a test of Israeli’s defenses rather than a serious attack since they are slow-moving and would provide Israel with ample warning.

Don’t know about security numbers in the big shopping centres like Bondi Junction but the one next door to me, a Stocklands and about an 1/8th of the size of Bondi, has 3 security on during the day & 2 overnight (closed) .. one from each shift to watch monitors & the others to patrol ……

IIRC it was the same shopping centre where a few years ago, at Christmas time, an elderly man, shopping there, went through the wrong door and despite searches of the shopping centre was not found — quite a few weeks later they found him dead in a stairwell, died of asphyixiation, dehydration and malnutrition. Why isn’t there a police ‘beat’ station inside the shopping centre?
Used to be a feature in this part of the world. In their wisdom police higher ups closed them and shopping centre crime went through the roof.
While police are reduced to reacting to crime rather than acting to prevent it they are failing in their duty to the public.
This might seem the shallowest observation, but how good is it to see a police woman in blue, hair in a bun, no tattoos and a good figure. The only police I’ve seen for a decade are fat, flouro and hung all over with the tinsel of sunnies, straps, cameras and pride signs, and usually working the beat between the drivers’ seat and the takeaway counter.
Spoke to my little brother this morning, ex NSWPlod Inspector. Basically, because he is dead he needs to formally identified, and that is a process that takes time, even if “known to police”. Had he been arrested, rather than killed, his name could have been released straight away

The local plod shop here, 500 mts from the shopping centre is, generally. overflowing with uniformed & un-uniformed plod .. co-incidental with their lunch break .. and as a cunning stunt, every afternoon Mon thru Fri, they park an empty “divvie” van outside the main entrance to deter the parents picking up kids from the, next door, high school double parking and kids from dashing across the roadway ….
Sadly, after 5 years in the same spot, folk have cottoned on to this ruse and everyone ignores the vehicle and its, intended, message .. LOL!

Joel Cauchi has been named as the man responsible for the horror stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction.
The 40-year-old who is originally from Queensland was shot dead by police after stabbing to death six people while walking through the shopping centre in a Kangaroos rugby league jersey about 3pm on Saturday.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke said Cauchi had been living in Sydney for some time.
“We are continuing investigations in relation to him,” he said.
“We believe he came to New South Wales last month. We have spoken to his family and we will continue to do so.
“We know that shortly after coming to Sydney he took possession of a storage facility which has been identified and we have worked through that very small storage facility.
“I said last night, there is still to this point nothing that we have, the information we have received, no evidence we have recovered, no intelligence that we have gathered that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation, ideology or otherwise
According to Sky the killer is John or Joel Gauci.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke says the man at the centre of a horrific mass stabbing in Bondi suffered from mental health issues.
Queensland man Joel Cauchi, 40, was identified as the attacker on Sunday morning in a press conference held by police.
“We know that the offender in the matter suffered from mental health,” Cooke told reporters.
We are continuing to work through the profiling of the offender but very clearly to us at this stage it would appear that this is related to the mental health of the individual involved.”
Cooke confirmed Cauchi came to New South Wales last month and took possession of a small storage facility.
“As I had said last night, there is still to this point nothing that we have, no information we have received, no evidence we have recovered, no intelligence we have gathered, that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation, ideology or otherwise,” Cooke said.
