Be interested to know what Cats “personal opinions” are on where the stock market is headed.

Mrs A has just requested her superfund be changed from “aggressive” to “cash only” (effective 10/9). She’s going to “sit it out” until the new year. Mainly a “gut feeling” that we are approaching some torrid times. What’s going on across the globe, particularly in relation to the US political scene and its ramifications for Australia and global economics generally. It’s to do with lots of different stuff (inflation, political instability, supply, 3GD and other stuff).

It’s not a lot of money (a few hundred $100,000), as she hasn’t always worked. It won’t have any bearing on our retirement plans. I’ve already got that side covered.

I’m not an economist or a financial advisor, and I’ve never really been that big on shares. I’m a “cash is king” type of guy, and have made sure we will always have stuff in reserve to sell off if we ever need to.

My basic attitude is it’s her money, she can do whatever she wants with it.

My question is, she is basically thinking there might be significant fall in the share market. Do you guys see that happening?

Worse case scenario is that she misses out on some growth for a few months. No real harm done. I’ll be calling her a sage if the “shit hits the fan”.

Nor did I…he often accused me of being insensitive. I remember once, years ago, I had afternoon tea with his mother and some other elderly survivors……..they cracked jokes about being in the camps. I thought it was funny…and it was….good Jewish humour. When I told my boyfriend about the afternoon tea he was shocked and accused me of disrespecting the Shoah….I responded that I didn’t disrespect anything…the jokes came from his mother and the other elderly women!

I’m speaking about the US market. I think it’s going higher and the reason is funny as. As Biden and the demonrats look lost they will be unable to enact economically destructive policies on a huge scale. this means that to a large extent, it remains Trumps economy. Trumps economy trumps all. 🙂

Monetary policy will also remain on the loose side. US higher.

My 2c.. I think we’ll be going through a rocky patch during the coming 12 months or so. Mainly because of the various opposing influences in interest rates/bond yields. Ups and downs, inflation/no inflation etc. Then I think stocks will move higher, much much higher well over S&P500 5500. As the USD heads way lower. The “taper” will last a nanosecond. Along with pet food, new dog nail clippers were on my list today, so I dropped into one of those ‘everything including, baths, nails & vet’, pet stores to have them cut back the dogs bear claws first.

“Do you do dog nails?”
“Yes.”
“Can I have my dog done?”
“Yes, but not now, during lockdown.”
“But you’re open & I’m here & no one else is.”
“Oh, the Vet can do it.”
“The Vet, now, can do them, in the same store that usually does dog nails but isn’t allowed to now.”
“Oh well … ”

Here, discuss something of substance: private schooling. Bear said on the Dash-Cat that no-one would even take a bet about politicians children predominantly attending private schooling. I put up a link to a discussion of the rates of private schooling, as below:

Around 35% of kids go to ‘private’ schools, far higher in Australia than it is in the UK, and politicians children are well represented in these school populations. Particularly favoured by well-paid pollies are the more elite schools where the fees are high. So you’re right, Bear, no-one would take that bet on. Pollies know how bad a lot of State schools are. This article gives a useful run down about the numbers, leftist but what do you expect from The Conversation.

Crossie, just my thoughts on stocks. The market as it is and has been for a long time, makes no sense, the stock valuations generally seem to have little relationship to dividends and underlying value, nearly all stocks and property is overvalued. This because the central banks keep making new money, the already wealthy and well connected people get access to this money first and pump it into assets, the only real assets are property and stocks, so they keep going up in price. This will continue until it can’t ie : when people suddenly realise that the money has no value and inflation takes off. The increases in stock and land price isn’t real inflation in the economic sense, real inflation is when all prices increase and keep increasing. So I reckon the price of stocks and property will keep going up for the foreseeable future as there seems to be no restraint in any government or central bank anywhere. It will be a party till suddenly it’s a disaster.

That very much encapsulates the theme of the video I posted earlier:

We’re Going to Have Another Great Depression.

From a very disreputable website:

There’s an anime called “Shin Sekai Yori” (From the new world) that is basically very extreme leftist propaganda.

It’s about a series of wars and conflicts by super-powered humans that devastate humanity until a group of other super-powered humans form a “council” (politburo) and establish a totalitarian government that functions by subjugating the nation’s citizenry to the extreme while imposing a strict orthodoxy of their choosing down on everyone aka socialism. This government engages in very extreme indoctrination of children (“abortion” for any child that doesn’t eat up the propaganda regardless of age) but also includes making boys and young men completely cucked and/or homosexual in order to make them more like Bonobos. They literally say like that; The politburo thought “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if humanity/men were more like Bonobos?” and then they started doing the Bonobo protocol.

The anime is complete shit and the propaganda is exceedingly repugnant, however it unintentionally reveals a lot of the failures of leftism. For example, in the anime, they make their socialist nation completely cucked so as prevent any conflict but when an external threat presents itself, none of them know how to defend themselves despite everyone having a vast arsenal of super-powers and there is no one else to defend them. Instead they just look around at each other and start getting slaughtered/running away.

Again, the anime is shit but if you want to see the leftist “utopia” according to them, that’s the perfect representation. “Shin sekai yori”. Fucking garbage but unintentionally one of the best dismantling of leftism I’ve ever seen.

I suspect that if the planners have any nous, it’s going to happen exactly where the plod is least expecting it.

There might be some “false flags” on the borders, but it’s more likely to concentrate itself in high population residential areas where lockdowns are despised. Lots of people, called onto the streets. More of a “party atmosphere” whereby average citizens can participate.

At least, that’s the way I’d be organising it.

People opposed to lockdown aren’t going to jump in their cars and travel a couple of 100k to a border to go to a protest. They will however, walk out their front door and down the street.

It would make more sense to blockade the suburbs, and especially the ones full of public servants and politicians.

This shit just turned up in my email…

Hello Milton
To help stop the spread of COVID-19, new rules now apply for workers needing to travel to and from a local government area (LGA) of concern and for people travelling outside of Greater Sydney. You now need to register your travel if you:
• are an authorised worker from a LGA of concern and need to leave the area for work
• are a worker entering a LGA of concern for work
• need to travel 50kms outside of Greater Sydney.
To register, log into or create a MyServiceNSW Account. You will need to provide your:
• contact details: name, address, email and phone number
• travel details and dates
• dependants name and phone number, if applicable.
When complete you’ll receive your travel registration by email.

You must carry your email confirming your registration when travelling as you will need to provide this to NSW Police if requested.

> Register to travel
New vaccination requirements for authorised workers
If you’re an authorised worker from a LGA of concern and you work outside your LGA from Monday 6 September you will need at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to work.

Rapid antigen testing will no longer be an alternative to getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

You are not required to follow this rule if you:
• are an authorised worker under 16 years old
• have a medical exemption.
Priority bookings are available for a COVID-19 vaccine. Book your vaccination appointment by selecting the option below that suits you:

> Authorised workers who live in a LGA of concern

> People aged 16-49 who live in a LGA of concern

> Childcare, disability and food workers who live or work in a LGA of concern

Fuckin outrageous. Worse than Vicco atm. No doubt that will change.

It makes little sense to “blockade” food supplies. You are only hurting the “little people”, the people who are every bit as pissed off as you are with the lockdowns. Starving the very people you want support from is idiotic.

Much smarter to blockade places like the airports (that only the elite are allowed to use). Or drop your trailer at a public service building car park exit. Good luck getting your car home tonight, conspirators.

Blockade the decision makers driveways. No “comm car” for you! Walk to work.

Make THEM feel the pain. Personally. Don’t punish the “little people”.

I wouldn’t be letting a comm car, cab, take a way driver or any delivery driver with 5km of their residences. Lock THEM down. Make these fuckers walk the streets, in shame.

Sure, we can trust medical science …

It would not come to light for nine more years that FDA regulators and Big Pharma executives had been quietly holding private meetings at expensive hotels at least annually since 2002, through a drug industry funded nonprofit … The meetings led to the development of “enriched enrollments”, an aptly named practice that allowed drug companies to weed out people from their studies who didn’t respond well to their drugs, therefore tipping the balance towards FDA approval for new drugs – and away from science.

Crossie, just my thoughts on stocks. The market as it is and has been for a long time, makes no sense, the stock valuations generally seem to have little relationship to dividends and underlying value, nearly all stocks and property is overvalued.

SFW, these are very, very scary thoughts. Here’s is a counter to your views. Why are markets necessarily overvalued? Let me focus on the US market only, which is where I have more of an interest and is big enough to infect all else.

The Dow PE ratio is around 24 times earnings. That maybe high historically, but is it high with the level of bond prices here and expectations for the near future?
How about US housing. By what metric are you using to describe house prices as overvalued?
Buying is now , in some cities, cheaper than renting. How would you describe real estate values as over valued?

Let me remind you that the Japanese Nikkei has a PE ratio of 31. Take a look at this chart and click on Max. By and large the Nikkei’s PE ratio isn’t out of kilter if we go back to 1971.
https://www.ceicdata.com/en/indicator/japan/pe-ratio

This because the central banks keep making new money, the already wealthy and well connected people get access to this money first and pump it into assets, the only real assets are property and stocks, so they keep going up in price.

Asset values either expand or stop falling during a QE. That isn’t a bug, it’s a feature. Prices are sticky in our economic system and when we have either previously misaligned monetary policy -it’s too tight, or an economic shock hits need compensating loose monetary policy in order to absorb the hit.

This will continue until it can’t ie : when people suddenly realise that the money has no value and inflation takes off.

Inflation, or in fact hyper inflation would have taken hold before people realize money has no value. I’m sorry to say but your sentence doesn’t make sense.

Hyper inflation can only occur when the market believes the CB will not stop QE (printing money) irrespective of the inflation target.

We actually had the opposite for a very long time. Markets believed and rightly so, that CBs didn’t respect the inflation target as they were chronically below.

The increases in stock and land price isn’t real inflation in the economic sense, real inflation is when all prices increase and keep increasing.

Yes, inflation is a move up in the general price level.

So I reckon the price of stocks and property will keep going up for the foreseeable future as there seems to be no restraint in any government or central bank anywhere. It will be a party till suddenly it’s a disaster.

Okay.

Thinking about Dot’s earlier post, ‘political terrorism’ is exactly what’s happening. Where does little Johnny hoWARd stand regarding this assault on liberty?

I think I heard him say he was on Gladys’ side on TV news one night but I must admit I wasn’t paying much attention. We are never getting out of house arrest.

Houses may not be overvalued at all. Construction is taxed so heavily in Australia it constricts supply and on top of the usurious taxes, this makes housing horribly expensive.

It’s not the true value, but perhaps the true cost.

What exactly is the state of idiocy in Victoriastan?

I have some machinery to be transported from Melbourne to Country Vic, is that allowed in this idiocracy? Truck driver doesn’t want to cop a $5k fine.

I have no idea because I tuned out to these morons rules 18 months ago.

“People opposed to lockdown aren’t going to jump in their cars and travel a couple of 100k to a border to go to a protest. They will however, walk out their front door and down the street.”

I like the Parisian civil resistance as shown on Outsiders today. They’re sitting eating take-away outside restaurants picnicing on blankets spread in the streets. Hundreds of them. With the kids. Try running the police cavalry through that and see how you go. More of this sort of civil disobedience is the way to go.

ps. I also like JC, who was great to me when I was very down and worried in hospital, and I like Arky, who makes videos of the things he does just as I write little tales of the things I do. Pps. I have just helped Hairy clear out the storeroom for council pick up tomorrow. Now going for a short walk, while the oven self-cleans. This is life and its interesting variations chez nous these days.

I agree. Totally.

As for land prices, get a fucking load of this in Sydney.

Get a load of this

Most people don’t think of nature breaks when visiting a city. But Sydney has spectacular national parks where wilderness, culture and colonial heritage overlap. Go off the grid while bushwalking, camping, picnicking or hiking, enjoy magnificent views and spot wildlife such as kangaroos and kookaburras.

A decent swag of Sydney is national parks.

The Oz critiquing a new hughie movie.

The science fiction thriller Reminiscence, starring Hugh Jackman, is a seriously mixed up film. It’s a blend of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, the Kevin Costner critical washout Waterworld, Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon.

The first problem is that it resembles an Ikea nightmare: the bits do not click together. The second problem is they don’t work on their own either. The third problem is a voice-over by the main character, scientist Nick Bannister (Jackman), that treats the audience like idiots.

The main setting is Miami. There have been wars and floods and the city looks like Venice without any tourists. The only people on dry land are the wicked land barons who “stay afloat by drowning everyone else”.

Sounds terrible. Has there been a recent sci-fi movie that isn’t dystopian in some way?

Some people just feel the walls closing in. Isolation is like that.

Arky’s missus has been told – no jab, no job. Serious stuff right there.

On taxed building – the amount of ticket clipping to get the simplest job going in Sydney is eye-watering. On cleaning out some ancient files, I stumbled upon plans for an extension I built in my NW Sydney home (Federation and part of an unusual grouping of five) back in 1980. All that was required then was a floorplan and two elevations. The end. Dad drew them.

Try that now.

Democrat Mayor of New Orleans refuses to order mandatory evacuations ahead of potential class 4 hurricane. (Even though they have known for at least 2 days that it was heading for them).

Save a thought for those poor buggers for the next 18 hours or so. It isn’t going to be pretty.

115 MPH wind gusts are already being recorded in the Mississippi River delta. Current pressure 955 MB. The only blessing is that the storm is moving fairly rapidly.

Meanwhile: White House staff working 24 hours a day to figure out how to spin this as Trump’s fault.

We did a reno about a year ago. The council wanted $8,000 deposit before we started in case we damaged the sidewalk. Because it wasn’t a planning or building permit ( I forget which is the least onerous) I ignored the demand and the building went ahead.

The sent a $1,600 fine at the end of the work. I sent it to my lawyer and the walked. I was prepared to go to court.

The Martian was Okay while the Arrival was really hard to follow. Interstellar simply lacked credibility. The dude was waltzing around the universe in a starship that could travel through worm holes.
Before that, he was driving a 1950s looking farm truck and lived in a house that belonged in the 30s. Also, they had the tech, to build a worn hole traveling starship but they could fix the agricultural problems.

Yea.. fuck off.

Ah yes. The crossover and layback levy. Just in case you damage the nonexistent “footpath”.

– environmental effects statement
– waste management plan
– landscape plan
– concept plan
– shadow diagram
– long service leave levy
– insurance levy
– tree report
– dilapidation report

It goes on, and on, and on. And for every report, there’s a non-productive god of the copybook headings employed to make sure you do it again to their liking.

Dot is right. The price of housing reflects the cost of housing.

Hi Crossie, had an interesting experience in the last 2 years. Wanted to retire, cash in super and spend it. “No, no, no, no, no” said super funds, quoting rules, “not til you’re 67”. Accepting their case I resigned, moved interstate and began life with squillions lacked away for a few more years. As early lockdowns were boring I went back to work and nominated one said fund for contributions. Then they rang me. Entitled to the whole lot less tax, which I got. Never quite understood why and they couldn’t explain it. So a win for Shy Ted. Unfortunately I can’t recommend a state or territory to move to.
I’m investing in the WEF. By 2030 I’ll own everything and be very happy.
