find a Les Paul too heavy and dark

One of my best mates (now sadly under the ground) had a Les Paul. I found it incredibly heavy and staggeringly uncomfortable to play, hard edges digging unrelentingly into the rib cage.

But, FFS, it was beautiful. Black with white binding. 🙂

Also for a Strat guy, if the SG feels odd, take a look at the Firebird. The mini-humbuckers are really sweet.

19 Year Old Man Jailed After Mental Breakdown in Hotel Quarantine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2uWy9eNH1M

Sep 5, 2021
Real Rukshan

A 19 year old man has had a mental breakdown prior to his release from a 14-day hotel quarantine stint in a hotel in Richmond, Victoria. During the incident that was recorded by Danny Hayes (also in quarantine at the same hotel), the man is heard yelling at authorities about his state of mind and smashing items in his hotel room. At one point a police officer is alleged to have yelled “calm down or you are going to get f***ing gassed” at the man.

The media and government rarely focus on understanding the nature of these incidents, however they devote a lot of time and coverage to understanding alleged breaches of CHO directives, most recently a incident involving Nadia Bartel.

We know about this particular incident involving this young man because of the recording made by another member of the public at the hotel, however how many such incidents are occurring at such facilities throughout the country, and are steps ever taken to address these problems?

The man has subsequently been given a 3 month jail sentence for damaging property and attempting to leave hotel quarantine earlier.

“Thomas became violent on Saturday because he believed he was due to leave quarantine at midday on September 4 but staff would not let him out. In fact, he was not due to leave until a minute before midnight”

The one question I had trouble with was “should businesses be allowed to” refuse service to unvaccinated.
Actually there’s a good argument that in principle businesses should be “allowed” to. (There should have been a question whether any businesses should be compelled to refuse service to the unvaccinated.)
But clearly voting “yes” would be misinterpreted as supporting compulsion.
So I did vote “no”.

I’m resisting YT, but on guitars this track is a ripper, with a Double Fender used in anger. It’s the official vid as I can’t find a really good live version. The transition from lower to upper is at about 2 minutes. Just glorious.

I’m suspicious about the mandatory check ins.
If you walk around with a smart phone, there is no need for it with regards to contact tracing.

It’s like the NSW police continually finding stashes of meth as part of “routine” traffic stops.
Their strike rate is off the chart.
It’s clear they are hacking, meta data’ing huge parts of the population & then the cover is a traffic stop when they uncover something.

The IBM AI/machine learning system that Victoria is running appears to be working well on the predictive front.
But keep in mind, the contact tracing has nothing to do with the beat up that COVID delta is, or the political response.

The thing that surprised me was this woman’s saying that the Americans were so rigid when in the two greatest conflicts of the 20th Century the US had been dragged in against their wishes and had to adapt on the fly – not a space where hierarchies flourish. That is done on the ground.

But this woman was one of the smartest people I ever knew, and the breadth of her knowledge was amazing, so dismissing the US out of a dim witted antipodean or British Commonwealth chauvenism we’re both non-starters.

My view on the police is that many have still to decide. The flood tide is overtaking them. Some (maybe many) will resist, shocked at what they are perceived to be. How long before Dutton’s cyber crime & internet laws are used by Plod as part of their generic toolbox of ways to harass normies?

Example, Firearms Prohibition Order being used to harass Aussie Cossack.
(Every cop involved, from the Plod making the searches, all the way up to the Deputy Commissioner who signed off on the order, knows he does not possess a firearm & they’re not going to find a ruddy thing)

Imagine Dutton’s laws being used by someone as vindictive as Gillard in the future.
And because they’re lefties, the media would run dead on it.

The best example of this is the Australian Crime Commission (at the time) & the darkest day in sport.
NRL, AFL etc were shown parts of the report, but not allowed to disclose its details under threat of a mandatory jail sentence (would have been good to see that tested in the High Court).

Clearly the biggest beat up in Australian sporting history, nothing of note came from it, but the Crime Commission went along with it.

@Motherlode-

The historic issues with the US Army is correct, as George C. Marshall’s experience in WW2 is anything to go by.

They went to war with outdated doctrine that persisted despite operational experience (US Army tank formations were doctrinally only to support the infantry. Lesley McNair’s Artillery branch insisted on having sole control of all anti-tank weapons. So US Army M3 and M4 tanks faced superior German Panzers and Stugs with main guns optimised for infantry support. And thinly-armoured self-propelled guns were expected to be raced up if armour was found. In practice, tank destroyers tended to be pressed into service as improvised assault armour- With the attendant casualties- And US tank crews did not get an effective multi-purpose gun until the 76mm HV gun on the M4A3E8 in very late 1944- Early 1945, And the very limited trial issue of the 90mm-equipped M26 Pershing in March-April 1945).

Fortunately, the US Army and its brass had sufficient strength of character and resilience to fire underperforming officers at all level, and promote up those with the ability.

For example, if you look solely at the US Army’s standard of West Point graduate standings, Dwight D. Eisenhower was a middling to shit-tier officer.

He ended the war as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, and later contested and won the US Presidency after Harry Truman. And he is just one example.

This culture was all promptly and conpletely undone by the time of Korea, and then Vietnam. In the tradition of all good peacetime militaries.

Even amongst our biggest ally, Officers from the rank of Colonel up have held and been promoted on the basis of peacetime political games and ideology.

This is just the first time in our shared military history that the rot went uncorrected amidst a time of an effective war footing- We started deploying troops O/S in earnest in 1999, and haven’t stopped since. The US and UK started in earnest in 2001…

* Correction- US Army tank formations were to engage in infantry support and breakthrough/cavalry operations.

In theory, they were to disengage from any enemy armour encountered and call forward anti-tank units to deal with them.

Operational practice from Tunisia to Sicily and the heel of Italy proved this was not the case, but the doctrine and subsequent unit organisation was so set in stone that US Army Tank Destroyer units persisted thru Normandy and North-West Europe until the end of hostilities in May 1945.

“My Shermans go faster, and they use less gas.”

The arithmetic was pretty brutal for M4 units, both US and American.

But they did have a lot more to break than the other side did. They are a good example of a ‘good enough’ tank for the time, automotively speaking. The 75mm and 76mm guns were very okay, but against anything better protected than a Pz IV or over 1000 yards, and their performance was lacking. The British Army resolved this with the Firefly, squeezing the 17-pounder into the Sherman turret.

Having said that, I think Patton would have made very good use of Pershings if they were available. Maybe even making Prague and forever screwimg with what we all grew up knowing as the Iron Curtain…

And I suspect that the UK would have used Cromwells, Challengers and Comets as a preference if they were available in quantity.

They also don’t break down. Prior to D-Day they flogged some Sherman’s and Cromwells from one end of the UK to the other. The Sherman’s needed only minor repairs to keep going. Compare that to some of the late model panthers whose drivetrains would crap themselves if you look sideways at it.

The 75mm is also relatively underrated, very versatile in terms of ammunition. If the had put more research into the AP ammo development they probably could have squeezed 76mm equivalent performance out of it.

One can only wonder what sort of superlative the Panther would have been like, if the Wehrmacht’s desire for a direct T-34 clone or analogue (in protection and mobility) had been put into production instead?

But the Sherman was indeed very good automotively. Better protection would have been great, though.

Actually, Trinidad’s Dr. Michael McDowell in that clip above said something pretty frightening in that regard which was new to me. Vaccinating people during a pandemic puts the virus under pressure and causes it to mutate. Also, as many have said, the vaccine only provides protection against the original virus and inhibits the natural immune response to any variant. Dr. McDowell said it was possible for an immunised person to contract more than one variant at the same time and that they could combine to create a super variant that nothing could cure. So we may end up there yet.

A few decent parties on twitter are now saying 90% of COVID related hospital admissions in Israel are vaccinated.

I’ve seen that, but I believe it’s a statistical quirk, Bern.
I’ll try my best to explain it.

Nearly all Israelis of a certain age who were encouraged to vaccinate have done so. That leaves the un-vaccinated , who mostly make up the 10% the much younger cohort. There are fewer of them.

You were always told that the vax wasn’t 100% and now we have the variant. The vaxed cohort is very big so it would make sense they are the largest group in hospital. Also, the death toll supposedly isn’t large.

Vaccinating people during a pandemic puts the virus under pressure and causes it to mutate. Also, as many have said, the vaccine only provides protection against the original virus and inhibits the natural immune response to any variant.

If I’m not mistaken, Dr Malone says that vaccination should be reserved for the most vulnerable ONLY, for this very reason.

If Dr. Malone is right, then his principle applies to all vaccines. Clearly that’s not so.

I don’t really follow any football code that closely.
I watch it from time to time, particularly finals.
I probably lean towards Storm and Demons but not at all fanatical.
I noticed upthread your reference to “blackest day in sport”.
Good get.
I had forgotten that.
Weren’t they going to expose massive doping and betting scandals across multiple codes?

Israel is ahead of the curve. This is our future, especially if the all out push to vaccinate continues. They know this. That’s why they’re in such a rush.

For the very old, the vax may not protect them totally from being ravaged, that’s true. However, the vax does introduce the bugs anti-bodies to the system so the vax may be about to fight the bug by having received an introduction.

Rabz.
My question about AdamD (and it is no more than a question) is driven by the glacial pace he moves to expunge the guano.
