Gina Rinehart says look at the sun’s orbit. Apparently it takes 230 million years. Does she mean rotation, solar activity?

That would most likely be the sun’s orbit around our galaxy (The Milky Way)
That’s about the time I’ve seen mentioned for one orbit.

Hmm found a 1st ed hardcover Glory Road, w dust jacket. It can land here for about $50… I’ve spent more on books I haven’t previously read, but not much and not many.
Loved TMIAHM and Starship Troopers. Could an author, even a great, really have three essential books? Most have but one.

Bloke I met at work today mentioned he’d read a bit Heinlein. Reckoned it was shit.

His early stuff was great. Lots of excellent stories, “The Puppet Masters” was fabulous.
Clifford Simak was also great, “All Flesh is Grass.” Great story.
Many of these blokes were excellent story tellers but a couple of them got seriously weird.

Heinlein in Dimension is worth reading:

http://www.panshin.com/critics/Dimension/hdcontents.html

H hated it and refused to talk to the author.

I think I mentioned here once I did my Masters (Qualifying) on Heinlein’s later fiction. His stuff after Time Enough for Love is pretty bad. Good SF concepts marred by simplistic characterisations and an obsession with sex. I had to come up with a few original concepts, and one – not very individual – was the Heinlein Individual, a sort of superman (or woman) who is H distilled. They are good at the things that matter: fighting, navigation (through life as well as geography, surviving etc….

Rather annoying actually, as was H himself in his later years, apparantly.

I found this book very interesting

The story of the scifi magazine Astounding and its primary figures –
John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard, and the Golden Age of Science Fiction.
Heinlein was a curious character; considering his post war politics his earlier life was unexpected – lefty and sexually adventurous (with strange beginnings to that part of his life)

All four of those guys were a bit out there!

Winston – I suspect the USN could sink the entire Chinese navy in an afternoon if it wanted to.

Maybe … so why would China risk that?

The scenario could play out without going hot. Say:

An accidental shoot down of one of the Chinese planes interdicting Taiwanese airspace [or ship/sub sunk]. China righteously demands compensation / concessions [too steep for Taiwan]. Taiwan does not comply and China launches cyber attacks and blockades [stops all ships / planes flying in]. If Taiwan escalates – China over reacts blowing up repairable infrastructure (leaving factories it needs intact) and otherwise putting more pressure on Taiwan’s population … which forces a surrender on the basis of better red than dead and China promises special treatment maintaining freedoms and the like [and this time means it 🙂 ].

Biden stays out of it as anything US could do will be seen as declaration of war … as he’s in Xi’s pocket and who cares about Taiwan.

I know I’m slow but a penny dropped today.
I read in a few articles that hospitalisations were dropping ‘thanks to the vaccine.’

I suddenly realised why 80 percent (or thereabouts) was a magic number.

It means nobody can ever claim – or should that be, point out? – that hospitalisations are declining because the virus is so endemic that acquired immunity is now dominating. It allows governments to say ‘we did this.’

Not just aircraft Winston, many land based missiles to help defend the Taiwan Strait. I don’t think the USN would go there, it would opt for a much more stand off strategy because it would be slaughtered in the Taiwan Strait.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they have droned the older aircraft. It is the Flanker series that is the bigger problem. Old airframes but retrofitted with AESA radar and China claims it has an air to air missile, the PL-15, with a longer range than the AMRAAM. They now also have Flankers as growler equivalents.

The USN would suffer serious losses no matter even at a stand off distance. It seems odd to me that the US would refuse to support Taiwan because of possible losses. What’s the point of so much firepower if you run away in fear of losing some of it? If the USA doesn’t intervene China has a freehand in Asia, XI becomes an emperor god, and China can intimidate Asian countries at will. It is a terrible dilemma for the USA because they have to expect serious losses.

What surprises me is the rapidity of China’s military technology. We don’t know about the quality of but it is dangerous to underestimate that.

Today Hairy clipped away a very small portion of the covering of Pttosporum leaves over mum birdie’s latest little nest so that we can get a good look into it. It is still very sheltered and she dosen’t seem to mind, she looks up at me with her trusting yellow eyes just as she did before, so I have started talking nest talk to her again. She seems to like it. Like the other one, this nest is so close, only about one metre away and she has now learned the value of enclosure (away from the channel-billed cuckoo attacks) and of shade and shelter from the wild winds such as we had this arvo. Like the other one, this year’s nest is so carefully constructed, the same foundation of sticky-spittle glued together twigs and then a very cleverly woven little basket in which there are now two, in contrast to last year’s four, very hungry little scraps of birdflesh, making wide opening orange-edged yaws for food as the parents shovel it in. We’ve had fun watching her and her sleek, nimble and younger partner (yay!), a newby who seems a bit more dedicated than last year’s cad, as they care for the hatchlings.

Once more a little miracle taking place right under our noses and we only found out yesterday!

This will excite the neighbourhood. As before, they will all troop up for a viewing.

The widow of the former Zimbabwe dictator Robert Mugabe is challenging a fine of five cows and two goats imposed by a traditional leader for improperly burying her husband’s body.

Grace Mugabe is also seeking to overturn an order, issued by the same leader in May, to exhume her husband’s body and rebury it at a purpose-built mausoleum in the capital, Harare.

Mugabe, who died in September 2019 aged 95, was buried at his home village of Kutama, 55 miles west of Harare, following weeks of wrangling over where his remains should be laid to rest.

President Mnangagwa had planned for Mugabe to be interred at Hero’s Acre, a national shrine, and members of the ruling Zanu-PF party claimed at the time that the late tyrant’s remains “belong to Zanu-PF first, not the family”.

However, the Mugabe family said that he had wished to be buried at his ancestral home. They also claimed that Mugabe gave orders that Grace should watch over his body until it was buried out of fears that superstitious Zanu-PF members might use his remains “for rituals and witchcraft”.

Since then, senior ruling party officials have repeatedly called for Mugabe to be dug up and reburied at the national site. Some sources have claimed that traditional elders have been offered cars and cash bribes to intervene in the dispute.

Mugabe’s nephew has claimed the real reason Mnangagwa wants to exhume his predecessor’s body is to lay his hands on a mystical sceptre believed to have been buried with Mugabe, which “he [Mnangagwa] believes will give him the authority to be the leader of Zimbabwe”.

After Chief Zvimba fined Grace five cows and two goats and ordered the exhumation in May, Mugabe’s children lodged an appeal against the decision. However, a magistrate upheld the traditional chief’s order last month, prompting Grace to step in with a fresh appeal to the High Court.

Mugabe died in a private clinic in Singapore nearly two years after a military coup ended his 37-year rule. His downfall was prompted by a feud between Mnangagwa and Grace Mugabe, 56, who many ruling party members believed exercised undue influence over her ailing husband.

Warriors of the Rainbow is about the resistance of Japanese occupation in Taiwan pre WW2. Too long though. Looks like they come from tough stock. Chinese media didn’t like it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warriors_of_the_Rainbow:_Seediq_Bale

Early reaction to the movie has noted both the realism of its violence (which is due to the historical accuracy of its depictions of battle), and its undertone of Taiwanese nationalism. A review in The Economist avers that the film “[q]uite probably… has the highest number of graphic beheadings of any film anywhere. But they are faithful historical depictions.”[41] As Walter Russell Mead further commented, “This type of movie, done well, can inspire whole societies with nationalist pride, reinforce the prominence of folk heroes (including, quite often, violent ones), and strengthen a people’s togetherness at the expense of foreigners.”[42] C

Ignorant nonsense.

A couple of studies in the metadata were not great – the pooled results were good.

It doesn’t matter how many articles are written, the statistical result still stands.

If you take out the *bad, poor quality!!!!1″ work, then the result STILL stands.

That’s the point of a meta analysis. Or collecting a high number of observations.

Writing nasty things on Wikipedia is not the same as refuting the data.

We will never see the amount of fraud in counting COVID deaths in the US (particularly after subsidies were made available). You will never see the leftist authors of hit pieces compare the Pfizer marketing nonsense to real world efficacy data of their vaccine.

You will never see the same level of scrutiny ever applied to any other drug, ever.

Literally no drugs would ever be approved under the same scrutiny. No drug has EVER worked like that (falsely described as an alleged panacea), living without disease to live long and healthy lives is multifactorial – sanitation, epigenetics, nutrition, better medical imaging, vaccines, antivirals AND vaccines.

The Ivermectin story is, I suspect, the real scandal in a raft of misinformation, suppression and political bullsh*ttery.

There’s been enough written on how it might work to inhibit replication. Use appears to back that up. When I add in an expired patent and the howls of all the usual suspects, I smell a great big dirty rat.

That the drug has properties other than its original purpose comes as no surprise. There are plenty of precedents. As we were joking yesterday, even Pfizer has one in the stable. We’ll know soon enough – if an expensive “treatment” drug is fast tracked which has the same action (regardless of its chemical makeup) and all the establishment choir are singing its praises.

He snuck into the compound one night with a spray can, and inscribed a C before, and T after the ‘UN’ on one of them. A photo (Polaroid, of course) was then taken, which I saw later.

He reckons it was worth every bit of the mucho RPs that followed.

As a Catholic …

You take it upon yourself to declare people like Daniel Andrews have left the faith, then when shown to be wrong, you declare that they are disqualified from the faith, while you also support your Pope for telling his Bishops to not even refuse The Eucharist to the likes of Pelosi & Biden, who’s very public Anti-Catholic sins have been boastfully celebrated & promoted for close to longer than Andrews has been alive.

As a Catholic you should be aware of the raving wolves and care more for the lost sheep & lambs they devour than whitewashing the dens that protect the wolves.

Coutts-Trotter is worse than a drug dealer. He’s Plibbers’ husband.

Do the Libs honestly think he’ll keep his trap shut? Idiots.

When Coutts-Trotter got a top public service job sure it was a wtf moment.
But considering how he’s been in various roles for over a decade he must be somewhat competent.
Unlike Mark Scott who was parachuted in from the ABC into a top tier tax payer funded role.

Rosie – I’ve long been doing climate comments and yes sometimes I do commend Francis when he says something laudable. Which he does sometimes. Unfortunately he seems really fixated on the climate lies.

On the other hand he’s not alone, Justin Welby is a notorious woke lefty climate Chicken Little too. But Francis does have a large secular as well as religious influence, larger than Welby’s.

Unfortunately I can’t see the Vatican improving as the Francis faction is going to be in ascendancy for a very long time having stacked the college. Poor Benedict must be sad about the direction Catholicism is going.

“Coutts-Trotter is worse than a drug dealer. He’s Plibbers’ husband.”

LOL…correct!

I can’t believe he goes home and doesn’t talk to his wife about “things’. Having said that, I know three people who worked for Coutts-Trotter and they all speak highly of him.

To be clear:

I did not – not – deploy to Rwanda with elements of the battalion I served with.

By then I was out, and working on the door of an AJ pub – Tatts – in the Ville.

Rita had a clip of angry journalists asking Dom Perrottet where – *sob* WHERE? – is Kerry Chant??

Perro replied that he is the elected official.

Pity he didn’t say she was writing her resignation letter.

  1. Nothing better than relaxing next to a warm stove on a cold winter’s day with a couple of cats keeping…

  2. This is a working professor in the field, I like his clobber. Dressed for the occasion, don’t see the need…
