Singapore’s immunity trap a lesson for Australia

In the last few weeks, tents and other temporary structures have appeared at hospitals in Singapore as it grapples with a per-capita load of daily infections that is suddenly the highest in Asia.

But unlike in India or Indonesia earlier in the year, these spillover areas are not filled with desperately ill people. Rather, they are triage stations, sorting COVID-19 cases into those who can go home, those who need to be admitted, and those who need to be otherwise isolated.

The difference is vaccination. When the delta variant ripped through New Delhi and Jakarta, vaccination rates were negligible. In contrast, about eight in 10 of Singapore’s entire population are double-jabbed. That’s one of the highest rates in the world and has kept serious illness to low numbers.

But vaccinations reduce, rather than stop, infections and Singapore’s Finance Minister, Lawrence Wong, describes the country as “COVID-19 naive” because it recorded a relatively low number of COVID-19 infections before vaccinations became widespread.

It turns out the terrible waves of illness that swept through the United Kingdom and the United States last year did leave one positive – natural immunity. It’s valuable and the only way to get it is through people catching COVID-19.

As Wong put it, many countries “have reached a new COVID-stable situation where they are able to resume activities, and they have not seen any resurgence of cases. We are in a different position.”

The parallels to Australia and New Zealand are obvious, says professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore.

“Pandemics end through natural selection or adaption, which is what happens when we are repeatedly exposed to a pathogen. We get used to it being in our body and thereby reducing the harmful or long-term consequences,” professor Teo says.

“Our ministers use that phrase ‘COVID-naive’ because Singapore – very much like Australia and New Zealand – has been very successful at keeping COVID-19 out of our country, so many of our people have not been exposed to the virus.”

THG:

Sliced bread is the standard for greatness. No one seems to ask what was the greatest thing before sliced bread, and many compete over what is the greatest thing since. But, in 1943, sliced bread was about to encounter the largest war in human history, leading many to argue that the worst thing since sliced bread was the time the government banned sliced bread. The US government ban on sliced bread in January 1943 is history that deserves to be remembered.

Being Chinese can’t be made criminal, promoting murderous ideologies such as Communism, can.

As to China’s long history of horrific brutality, even Terry Pratchett wrote about that in his Discworld equivalent to China, when the Barbarian Hoard realised how they maintained a nation of submissive, unquestioning slaves without any overlords, whips or chains in sight.

However that can also be a reflection of just how long & hard China’s fought to reject The Creator God of Christianity … but that’s a whole other topic, not for places like this.

My friend is probably wrong about the bones bit. There have been a lot of rebellions in China but then a people so long existent tend to experience that.

Is China Naturally Authoritarian?
He states many millions have been killed in construction works of various kinds. For people like us it is hard to comprehend that people would submit to that kind of regime. Perhaps we had better get used to it!

He makes an interesting point about the psychology of the Chinese. For them there is much more emphasis on shame than guilt. It relates to the collectivism-individualism spectrum. A book I am currently reading highlights how people in the West tend to be much more guilt focused.

#SlugGate and iCook is the little story that tells the bigger story.

‘That level of casual corruption, that they did to iCook Foods, speaks to what they are doing to Victoria right now’.

‘You need a head on a stick’ to prevent future corruption.

In this segment we covered Dan Andrew’s baby – Community Chef – with connections to Anthony Albanese and CHO Brett Sutton, which is unravelling in parliamentary and police inquiries right now.

There’s a dead woman, doctored evidence, lies to parliament, $800,000 missing, millions of debts cleared by the Victorian Labor Party, a ruined family business, angry whistleblowers, highly motivated ex detectives coming out of retirement…

Welcome to the latest reality TV show. It’s the Victoria Dan Andrews created, and we all now live in.

School’s Out – For the Marxists

It’s a tell that these people do not want ordinary kids to learn anything real or analytical. It’s wishy-washy stuff, much of it lies. They come out of the school system without literacy or numeracy so they can’t get read alternative sources but have to watch TV for their news. Which is lock solid lefty.

Now they’re even doing it to the smart kids.

NYC: gifted and talented no more (8 Oct, via Instapundit)

New York City will be phasing out its gifted and talented program in the public schools.

“Instead, the city will train all its kindergarten teachers — roughly 4,000 educators — to accommodate students who need accelerated learning within their general education classrooms. The city does not yet have an estimate for how much the training will cost, though it is expected to be tens of millions of dollars.”

You see what will happen. Even the smart kids now won’t get any stimulation or education because that would be elitist and racist. So the bright professionals of NYC are going to have useless poorly educated children too. And woke pressure on them to accept this dumbing down will be immense.

The evidence I’m seeing so far is that the vaccine is causing the rise in hospitalisations and positive tests.

And the supply chain failures in the US appear to be getting worse.
If the factories are producing and the farms are growing stuff, where is it going? I can understand the choke point of China, but why the lineups of merchant vessels outside our ports?

The BBC is on a sugar high.

BBC urges staff to keep blood sugar levels high to stop racial profiling in job interviews (9 Oct)

The guidance warns bosses to beware of interviewing job candidates when they feel tired as it could result in them picking someone for a post based on unconscious racism. The guidance states: “When you’re recruiting, ensure your blood sugar levels don’t become low. Low energy, tiredness and low blood sugar increase our reliance on assumptions and bias.”

It gets sillier and sillier the more you read of it. Maybe it’s satire but I suspect not.

Journalists in the Philippines, Russia win 2021 Nobel Peace Prize (8 Oct)

Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov were given the award “for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia,” Chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen of the Norwegian Nobel Committee told a news conference.

“At the same time, they are representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly adverse conditions,” she added.

Somehow by that last sentence I doubt the increasingly woke Nobel committee means people like the Cossack.

No Rosie. The vaccination coverage mention in the story is similar to NSW. Yet the ICU patients here are a plausible split between the three categories – yes, only 14 of 140 fully vaxed, but that is in keeping with places like Israel. Not zero. Certainly not zero for a whole week.

Over six months ago, when AZ became available for over 60’s, I decided not to have it based on ethical grounds. My husband, having a number of co-morbidities, decided to have it. I promised him that if an alternative presented itself, I would submit.

Time moves on. Our lying PM told me that I would be at “the back of the queue”, implying that all doses of mRNA (the only alternative) would be earmarked for the young. I was happy with that – their perceived needs came before mine. In addition, he stated that the NovaVax would be exclusively used for boosters. He probably lied about that too.

Yesterday, I honoured my promise and threw my fate in with my eldest grandson. I had my first jab of Moderna. Cats will know I’m not happy about it but my position had became untenable, and I’m not about to have my 45 year marriage ruined by this bullshit.

Disclosure is important to me because any comments on the subject I make from hereon must be viewed through this prism. Obviously, my thoughts on passports and on mandatory jabbing remain the same, but I’m not silly enough to think that I’ll be immune from the temptation to use my “papers” to my advantage.

One question must be asked of the regime that placed Biden in the White House. Who is actually in charge? Who is making the decisions? Who is demanding these new Nazi-like rules/regulations/procedures? Who is making the final call? Who has now said parents demanding to be heard at local school board meetings are now domestic terrorists? Soccer moms in prison with radical Islamic terrorists? WT*? Who is keeping American citizens charged with simple trespassing in solidity confinement in prison? Who has instructed the FBI to arrest parents for domestic terrorism? Who has demanded “Google searches” now to be looked up for “wrong think” for crimes against the state? Who continues to call a therapeutic a vaccine when with this vaccine, you can still get the disease and also pass it to others? That’s not a true vaccine. Who states the violent riots from BLM/Antifa are constitutional protected free speech, while peaceful protests demanding a free and fair election of 2020 are the doing of insurrectionists?

Who is in charge of the Big Tech Social Media when they decide what words are “hate speech” and punishable by prison, while left-wing/anti-Trump speech is constitutionally protected? Who decided that censorship by Big Tech Social Media of all the Patriot (Conservative/Christian/Constitutional) speech, ideas, and thoughts is an American thing to do? What American in their right mind has decided that putting America First is xenophobic, racists, and evil? What person decided that opening our borders to illegal immigration, allowing illegals to come into our country illegally, was constitutional and legal?

Who decided that it was noble and justified to have a five-year coup against a duly elected president…oh that’s cool somehow; but at the same time states that questioning the presidential election of 2020 is treasonous? Who made the decision to leave Americans behind in Afghanistan to certain torture and death? Who made the decision to divide Americans by race and create further animosity between the races by demanding Critical Race Theory be taught in our public schools? Who has decided that hating people based on race color is now O.K.? Who made the decision that America did not start in 1776 but actually began with slavery in 1619? Who made the decision that America should not have borders? Who made the decision to allow China to become the de facto leader of the world?

Whoever he, she, or they are; it is evil. Pure evil. They are trying to destroy America.

Could vaccine passports soon be redundant?

It struck me recently that as testing regimes for covid become more accurate and more readily available (and much cheaper), vaccine passports could soon be redundant. Cheap and accurate tests could give immediate notification of whether a person is covid positive, regardless of vaccine status.

I offer this for argument’s sake only. I think the Swedish style, largely hands off approach to living with the virus has proven its superiority to the Chinese Communist style lockdown approach which our contemptible political class inflicted on us. But if it’s about the science and public health and not a power trip for politicians and health bureaucrats and the squawking ninnies in their social media corner, wouldn’t that be the rational way to go until we achieve herd immunity or close to it? Given we know that the vaccines are inefficient, and that vaccinated people can catch and transmit the virus, persistence with vaccine passports will see outbreaks and lockdowns continue indefinitely.

Can’t we respect these choices?

It goes against my beliefs but I am starting to agree with the institutionalist libertarians. An efficient governemnt doesn’t help freedom unless the society is populated with libertarian angels, that is New Hampshirites or Dots.

I hope so Roger.
If for no other reason that governments cannot afford to maintain this covid apparatus for ever.
As my New Jersey customer said, they have zero intervention in their lives despite 1500 cases and 20 deaths a day and think Melbourne’s lockdown is surreal.

But if it’s about the science and public health and not a power trip for politicians and health bureaucrats and the squawking ninnies in their social media corner, wouldn’t that be the rational way to go until we achieve herd immunity or close to it?

That’s a bloody big “if” in the first line.

The interesting thing is that one aspect is demonstrably true – Google the first sentence and all sorts of things come up…but not this article.

Fascinating.

Makka

As has always been the case with covid, the most horrid aspect of this whole period has been our Govts responses. Lies, deceit and deception, propaganda, out right thuggery and brutality, coercion, victimization, incarceration etc… this country has now become a shithole of oppression. They have ruined many thousands of lives and brought absolute torment and misery to as many families. It must never be forgiven.

Plus infinity times infinity. Neither forget nor forgive.

Leftist YouTuber Gets Redpilled And Then ATTACKED By Woke Mob, Former ‘Friends’

Tim, Ian, and Lydia join friend and fellow YouTuber Luke Rudkowski along with YouTuber and social commentator Arielle Scarcella to scrutinize how social media is affecting Arielle’s mostly young, female audience, and what it was like for her to leave the left.

(She basically called increasingly rabid feminism and wokeness a mental illness).

I am currently in the position of having to make the same choice as you to keep my job. Living alone I have no one to call an ambulance for me if I got a bad reaction to any vaccine I get. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly.
Reality is NO ONE cares, except family .. I’m in the same boat tho OAP.. live in NSW HC and have no neighbours who use English so very rarely speak to anyone anymore .. April gone my youngest moved out and that left me on my own .. filled in the various forms to advise HC and get a change in rent .. end result was I ended up over $2 500 in advance .. a ridiculous situation .. so I STOPPED paying rent as all the transactions are computer generated anyway .. I made NO payments or had any contact with the Dept. between mid May thru to mid September when the surplus dropped to a fortnight in front and I started paying again.
Sooooooooo at 73 if I’d dropped dead or had an accident in home, during that 3 & half months that would have been that .. living in a lockdown LGA (Fairfield), officially, my only contact has been by phone to my kids/grandkids but I’m not much of a phone user/answerer so no one would have got excited at me missing a coupla missed calls..
I do recall a Housing minister once stating that they check on HC folk over 70 living alone regularly but like most gummint edicts another piece of rubbish ..

Being an old smoker doesn’t necessarily class you as a stupid old bastard. But in this case ,as you have judged me I’ll do the same, you stupid old bastard.

Nothing I have posted above has been disrespectful of either people with comorbidities or smokers (but I absolutely detest the disgusting habit). I was hoping the studies might be helpful to those considering vaccinations.

“How many of them were smokers?”
If that’s not a cheap shot by an anti smoking Nazi please explain what it was?
The Nazi Party being the only historic mob for enforced smoking, treading on rights and rabid anti smokers.
Smoking is legal.
I’d you reckon it’s ok for some anti liberal zealot to make cheap shots here that’s cool. Free speech. And right of reply.

Brucie, could be right, but emphysema and CPOD reduce lung functionality by causing problems with the oxygen and CO2 exchange.
Then it could be right that tarring inside the lungs ironically offers protection.

This new study is a meta study. Meta studies just aren’t reliable.
