I was amused yesterday to read that at Yale the administrators now outnumber the teaching and research staff. Also that the more people homeschool the fewer of the kids go to uni, which makes sense since college degrees are on the one hand increasingly worthless, and on the other hand increasingly expensive. There is a more subtle way to (perhaps) get a similar effect without raising the issue of guns. Develop a “Reasonable use of force in defence of self, family and property” policy. Leave the definition of “reasonable” open. Then it is open to argue that if someone comes at you with knuckledusters, a cricket bat is reasonable. With a knife, a gun is reasonable. With a gun, anything goes.

It would be possible to argue that lower degrees of force are reasonable if only property is at threat. But if someone breaks into your house with a weapon, debate about whether the intent was theft or assault would leave plenty of room for a smart lawyer to argue.

The point that I objected to was not about who was being permitted to stay, but how we determined who should come here in the first place.
