Seems to me people focus too much on individuals rather then the situation those individuals face.

I’d suggest Putin’s approach is rather unique to him.

There are reports from within Russia that even his inner circle was surprised by the war declaration.

Recognising and absorbing Donetsk and Luhansk and dissuading NATO from admitting Ukraine would have been their goal.

Putin’s KGB personality profile apparently identified his chief weakness as being willing to take risks.

Thus far that’s worked out for him (Crimea and now Ukraine) because W. Europe has played directly into his hands by not matching his military expansion and surrendering their energy independence.

W. Europe has played directly into his hands by not matching his military expansion and surrendering their energy independence.

As I wrote yesterday, the conceit of Western elites is imagining that at heart everyone is a rootless liberal democrat made in their image.

Cf. Merkel’s (and she is responsible for much of this) response to Putin taking Crimea: “You just can’t do that!”

Well, had any disturbing behaviour been overlooked earlier in his career?
Some have claimed others in the SAS were jealous of his medals, but is that true?
Let’s say some Footballer who had been suspended multiple times for kicking heads, gouging eyes, squirrel gripping anyone within range and biting an ear or 2 off, was awarded the Brownlow Medal.
Do you think there might be a bit of opposition to the award that wasn’t motivated by jealousy?

The West Could Have Prevented The Russo-Ukrainian War, But Chose Not To
The Federalist

A succinct summary of comprehensively failed policy.

One of the drivers for Putin’s early ‘outreach’ to Kyiv must surely be to preserve as much as possible of Ukraine as a going concern – and:

• Heap ashes on the West’s failures, and show the US the door;

• Preserve the Ukrainian energy infrastructure from ‘fuck you, all of you, nothing left to lose’ sabotage;

• Avoid Afghanistan 2.0;

• Bring pointless Western sanctions to a brisk (and bitterly divisive) end.

I’m not saying what they would do in every instance is the same, rather that their attitude to their periphery would be more or less aligned…

Yes, but the willingness to express that attitude in actions as aggressively as Putin has done is something else. I also think there is more diversity of opinion in the Russia populace than we might think and that Putin allows for.

What have effete “west” or our international chattering classes, been to Ukraine if not that exact thing for the last 8 years.

Translated their gay speak to Ukraine was roughly:

Yeah she was involved with him before and they’ve got a messy past, and he’s big, but he’s a pussy dude. While it’s a Good Thing that WW3 hasn’t broken out over a poorly considered stouch over a corrupt relic of the Soviet Union, the Biden Administration has underlined that the US defence strategy is dependable, as in it wears Depends.

The immediate upshot is likely to be pressure on US allies to develop their own independent nuclear deterrent capability.

The Koreans are gagging for nukes, apparently.

The Japanese PM has just made very clear that, while Japan is committing to developing long range strike capabilities, its Constitution is firmly non-nuclear. So, absolutely no chance of a quick nuke-in-the-basement that just happens to fit on top of a Beijing-bound missile.
Absolutely none.

The immediate upshot is likely to be pressure on US allies to develop their own independent nuclear deterrent capability.

The recently published US Indo-Pacific Strategy does expect allied middle powers in the region to step up their defence spending so they can act in a truly multilateral way with US forces. But having nuclear weapons would be the only effective deterrent to Chinese aggression if the US were to slowly – or not so slowly – recede from the western Pacific.

As I said earlier, it isn’t called the Century Plant for nothing. The great spike comes up almost overnight and flowers in great profusion. A hormone release inside the plant says, “you’re all grown up now”.

So it then goes into reproductive mode, produce alluring bells irresistible to pollinators of all sorts. Once the entire spike is pollinated, the fruits appear – they are a hard, leathery capsule and drop off and take root. Meanwhile, the parent plant dies off, its rotting corpse supplying nutrient for the babies.

Robert Malone’s comment on the intention of the WEF minions to introduce a digitised social credit system :

A leading hypothesis to explain the “Universal vaccination nation” obsession is that vaccine passports are a strategic portal to achieving a key World Economic Forum objective.  That being development of a digital identity-based social credit scoring system which will enable management of human behavior by weaponizing banking and access to funds based on behavior and speech.  The core hypothesis here is that western democratic governments (which in normal times have personal privacy constraints) can leverage the emergency to mandate a digital identity and proof of vaccination with associated QR codes and cell phone-based contact tracing in the interests of “public health”.  This despite the proven fact that the mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccines not only do not stop viral infection, replication and transmission, but may even increase infection risk. The logic apparently is that the western democracies, which are increasingly acting like infiltrated client states of the World Economic Forum, can both economically and politically benefit by implementing a universal social credit system akin to that which has been pioneered and gradually implemented (think boiling frog) in the People’s Republic of China by the Central Communist Party.  For further on that topic, see here and here.
And now, thanks to Canada’s (or Cuba’s?) own WEF fanboy Justin Trudeau

and his WEF-trained finance director Chrystia Freeland, we have a peek under the covers, a foreshadowing of sorts, about the potential blowback issues with the whole “manipulate people to do what you want using social credit scores and weaponizing access to banking” strategy. Turns out that WEF darlings Justin and Chrystia were supposed to be the tip of the spear for piloting the WEF digital ID system.  So, faced with the threat of peaceful truckers occupying Ottawa and making like Canadian Geese with their horns, they decided to just go all the way and weaponize the banking system to meet the enormous threat to Canadian national security posed by the truckers. Well, that did not turn out quite as planned.  Apparently, when those holding both large and small bank accounts realized that TD Bank and other large Canadian banks were no longer a safe harbor, they decided to withdraw their funds.  Oops.
I guess that Canadian Finance Director Chrystia Freeland, although proudly listed by the WEF as an exemplar young leaders program graduate, was not trained as an economist, but rather her background is in Russian history and literature.  She seems to be yet another example of the Peter Principle as mind numbingly and repeatedly practiced by the WEF.
Back on point, it seems that both working class as well as high net worth people really do not like the threat of having their money stolen or frozen by government bureaucrats on a political crusade.  Who would have guessed?  So, what to do when what you previously thought was a safe harbor turns out to be plagued by arbitrary and capricious currents?  Get out of there, pronto. So, there we are. When the geniuses at the WEF meet to game out the “lessons learned” from Justin and Chrystia’s short sharp shock, what are they going to conclude?  Will they conclude that “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves”? Highly doubtful. My guess is that they will decide that the fault lies in having moved too fast, and that the Overlords should told their apparatchiks to stick to the incrementalist “boiling frog” strategy.
Now, was there any foreshadowing that could have alerted them to this little problem?  Well, to be blunt, yes. Have you noticed how bicoastal real estate (and farmland) prices seem really inflated?  What’s going on there? A case can be made that what is happening is that foreign investors – particularly private money with origins in the People’s Republic of China (much of which has been parked in Canada), is looking for shelter in real estate markets. See, if you are a Chinese billionaire (and there are lots of those), you have a problem.  At any moment the PRC can decide that your social credit score (or that of your company) is in default, and the Central Communist Party can seize your funds.  What’s a rich heiress to do?  Seek shelter offshore.  Even if you take a 50% haircut due to an “adjustment” in valuation of inflated offshore real estate, you are still ahead of having all of your money stolen by some arbitrary bureaucrat on a mission to impress his (yes, I intended to use that gender) superiors.  And when your portfolio manager discovers that Canada is going full PRC by weaponizing their banking system for political purposes?  Well, what would you do?  I think that “Get the H___ out of Dodge” is pretty much the universal answer.  Resulting in a cascade of economic badness that threatened to completely crash the new Totalitarian Canada. That one did not even require a Harvard exchange program degree in Russian history and a background in journalism to figure out.
So, there we have it.  The silver lining in this whole shizashow is that the WEF young leaders program seems more interested in turning out compliant bureaucrat functionaries than razor sharp, highly trained intellects. And as God is my witness, Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland certainly fit the mold. Let’s give thanks that they have alerted us to where Klaus and his minions want to quietly take us.  Now, if you care about your freedom and the autonomy of your nation, it is time to act.  Or forever hold your peace. There is no medical crisis. Time to shut down the illegal suspension of Constitutional rights using a fraudulent justification.  And let those of us who actually do an honest day’s work for a living (like Physicians, Farmers and Truckers) get back to work.

The trouble, Ed, is that Ukrainians viscerally hate Russians and Russians hate Ukrainians. So it’s totally plausible that when a Russian destroyer rocks up to a rock with 13 Ukrainian soldiers on it that they would say “fuck off” when told to surrender. After all that’s what the 101st Airborne did. And it would be totally plausible after they told the Russian captain to do something physiologically impossible that he’d tell his guys to erase the Ukrainians. It’s a testosterone thing, coupled with a century of mutual loathing.

Having said that I hope like Dover that they did surrender. I suspect though they all had a rush of blood to the head.

Ukrainian garrison at Snake Island surrenders to Russian Armed Forces — Defense Ministry

MOSCOW, February 25. /TASS/. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) garrison of 82 servicemen at the Snake (Zmeiny) Island in the Black Sea voluntarily surrendered to the Russian Armed Forces, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov announced Friday.

“In the area of the Snake Island, 82 Ukrainian servicemen laid down their weapons and voluntarily surrendered to the Russian Armed Forces. Currently, they are signing written vows to reject military resistance. They will be returned to their families shortly,” Konashenkov said.

Dover – It’s very well known that there’s a schism between the western ethnic Ukrainian part of Ukraine and the culturally Russian eastern part. Unfortunately there’s a winner-takes-all ethic in Ukrainian elections, which is why the western voters booted Yanukovych – who was close to Putin (and corrupt as, which in Ukraine isn’t unusual of course).

There’s a lot going for the idea that a nation and its boundaries should be culturally and/or demographically identified. Hungary tends in that direction. The Left hates the idea, hence bringing in hordes of country shoppers to denature cultural and demographic identity. Israel is stuck on the fence, irreconcilably divided between the Israeli Arab community and the Israeli Jewish community. I see a crack up in the future for that country.

Environmental impact of hand-sanitizing practices during the COVID-19 pandemic (25 Feb)

The use of hand sanitizing gels and increased hand-washing practices throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the environment and—by extension—public health.

In the first study of its kind, scientists underline that the environmental damage caused has been significant and more eco-friendly options are needed.

Among the headline findings are that the production and use of hand sanitizing gels has contributed around 2% of our usual carbon footprint; and that, on average and depending on the sanitizing gel or handwashing practice used, human health has been affected such that people may lose between 16 and 114 hours per year based on a comprehensive disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) impact analysis.

I suspect Gaia isn’t the only being who hates hand sanitizer, especially the ones that make you smell like a ponce.

Stone age revolution gets Tanzania moving (24 Feb)

High costs of steel and reinforced concrete and a fast-growing population mean the national government struggles to build much-needed roads and bridges.

But a fresh approach that revives the ancient art of stone arch bridge-building could safely and sustainably get millions of rural Tanzanians where they need to go.

Belgian charity Enabel and the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency have, in the past four years, built 70 stone arch bridges for villages in Kigoma, North Western Tanzania.

The bridges cost about £35,000 each to build and are 80% funded by Enabel, which has translated a construction manual into Swahili for the roads agency to use. Putting the project out to tender, the agency can afford to build one concrete bridge a year. Involving local people in construction, that same budget can fund 10 stone bridges.

The bridges are pretty too, as well as being built from local stone. Victorian era engineers would be happy with them, I think, and in the future they’ll become fine tourist sites.

If you’re the big fucking dick in room, scare the shit out of the others by acting just a little on the crazy side.

There are other stories making the rounds, too, and they are even more provocative. One has it that Trump — noting that Putin seized land from Georgia when George W. Bush was president and seized the Crimean peninsula when Barack Obama was president — warned Putin against a land grab on his watch.

“If you move against Ukraine while I’m president,” Trump is said to have told the Russian leader, “I will hit Moscow.”

Putin reportedly scoffed, “No way,” leading Trump to say, “All those beautiful golden turrets will be blown up.”

A similar story involves Chinese President Xi Jinping. It was during his visit to Mar-a-Lago in 2017 when Trump famously interrupted their chocolate cake dessert to declare he had just ordered the US military to fire 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base after the Syrian government used chemical weapons against rebels and civilians.

During that same visit, Trump reportedly told Xi that any military move against Taiwan would be met with an attack on Beijing. Xi, like Putin, is said to have been stunned, though it is possible neither man believed Trump was serious. While it is also possible that both accounts are exaggerated, it is a fact that neither man made the moves Trump is said to have warned against.

“I got along best with the tougher ones” is how he summarized his relations with foreign leaders.

Seen lots of footage of destroyed Russian equipment and a few POW’s but very little on the Ukrainian side whose loses IMO would be substantial especially with equipment which with the air superiority Russia enjoys would be very vulnerable.

Offensive on Kiev has just begun by the sounds, heavy gunfire heard round zoo, which is not far from the centre of the city. Wonder where the Ukrainian President is holed up? Hopefully away from Kiev.

On the accurate news problem, Rosie pointed out a good one this morning. It’s been widely reported that a “Russian tank” deliberately ran over a car. Rosie’s link to a StillGray tweet shows it was actually a Ukrainian APC that swerved and ran over the car. But what hasn’t been mentioned is that in the footage the APC has clearly been hit by a RPG just before it swerved. And a second RPG passes across the front of the vehicle an instant later. Who fired the RPGs? I have no idea. But being in an APC hit by one is no joke, and crossing the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic is understandable in such circumstances.

Gibberin’ McKibberin knows what to do about Vlad.

This headline, its real, its now, its 100% pure mong.

This is how we defeat Putin and other petrostate autocrats
Bill McKibben
After Hitler invaded the Sudetenland, America turned its industrial prowess to building tanks, bombers and destroyers. Now, we must respond with renewables

Russia has a pathetic economy – you can verify that for yourself by looking around your house and seeing how many of the things you use were made within its borders. Today, 60% of its exports are oil and gas; they supply the money that powers the country’s military machine.

And, alongside that military machine, control of oil and gas supplies is Russia’s main weapon. They have, time and again, threatened to turn off the flow of hydrocarbons to western Europe. When the Germans finally this week stopped the planned Nordstream 2 pipeline, Putin’s predecessor, Dmitry Medvedev , said, “Welcome to the new world where Europeans will soon have to pay 2,000 euros ($2,270) per thousand cubic meters!” His not very subtle notion: if the price of keeping houses warm doubles, Europe will have no choice but to fold.

Today, 60% of Russia’s exports are oil and gas. Control of oil and gas supplies is Russia’s main weapon
Finally, even the Biden administration – which has been playing its hand wisely in the lead up to the invasion – is constrained by oil and gas.

Imagine a UK, which instead of starting to ramp up war production instead shut down its factories producing war goods.
That effectively what the EU/US have done with their insane bans on exploiting their own energy resources.

Imagine* a Europe that ran on solar and wind power: whose cars ran on locally provided electricity, and whose homes were heated by electric air-source heat pumps. That Europe would not be funding Putin’s Russia, and it would be far less scared of Putin’s Russia – it could impose every kind of sanction, and keep them in place until the country buckled. Imagine an America where the cost of gas was not a political tripwire, because if people had to have a pickup to make them feel sufficiently manly, that pickup would run on electricity that came from the sun and wind. It would take an evil-er genius than Vladimir Putin to figure out how to embargo the sun.
….
Here he goes faster than the speed of Mong- achieving mongnitude of extraordinary purity and power.

But, here again, the example of the second world war is helpful – with the Axis in control of commodities like rubber, we quickly figured out how to mass produce substitutes.

*Hes an xpert in imagining.

Haha, “Weepy” Bill McKibben has been in the forefront of this silly stuff for at least 15 years of my experience. This one a few days ago was fun though:

350.org Outed As White Supremacists (22 Feb)

Are you familiar with 350.org? It’s the super-activist environmental NGO founded in 2008 by professor and author Bill McKibben and 8 others described by Politico as “a group of white people.” The 350 of the name, according to the group, is the highest level of atmospheric CO2, in parts per million, that is acceptable for the planet. (The current level is well above that.).

I can’t say that I am surprised at all to learn that 350.org is permeated by “white supremacy dominance culture.” The simple truth as to what’s going on is that the people who run and fund the place are wealthy, guilty white liberals who have somehow convinced themselves that they can alleviate their own guilt by further impoverishing low income people and members of minority groups.

Ouch, I need popcorn.

Putin is a chap who will kill people to achieve his political outcomes.

That makes him a bad guy.

Whatever chaff is thrown around about goodies/baddies you can cling to “Will he order people killed to get an outcome he wants”.

Just a few thoughts on the Russia/Ukraine situation:

I suspect Putin has moved to send a message to two different groups. Firstly, the Ukrainians. Putin has repeatedly expressed his wish that the countries that border Russia are friendly (Belarus) or at a minimum neutral (Ukraine). The Baltics do not seem to be a threat despite their EU membership, possibly because there is not a large Russian minority there. When I visited Tallinn in 2017, all signs were in English, Russian and Estonian. My then-husband and I entertained ourselves identifying buildings according to how they were built – the Soviet era ones were easy for him to spot. They were exactly the same as the ones in his adopted hometown of Kholmsk in the Russian Far East.

The Ukrainian cosying up to NATO has been an irritant to Putin for a long time and Western meddling in Ukrainian politics (Maidan 2014) has exacerbated the issue. I believe this will not be a protracted conflict but something short and sharp to remind the Ukrainians how easily Russia can roll through at any time. And rebuilding their now-destroyed infrastructure will probably occupy Ukrainian minds for a bit.

The second group these actions are directed at is obviously the West. Putin, I believe, feels he has played by the rules long enough for no result. He also knows the West has no stomach for a fight and, due to the irredeemably corrupt and stupid Biden administration, is somewhat dependent on Russian oil. Didn’t Blinken just announce that despite the invasion, America would continue to buy Russian oil?

And for those who say that Ukrainians and Russians are the same people, that is just ignorance of the highest order. Yes, they are all Slavs but it would be similar to saying that the Dutch and the Germans are one people. And nobody would seriously put that comment forward.

I don’t have a dog in this fight. My sons are half-Russian but do not feel any loyalty to the country of their father’s birth. They love the food, children’s cartoons they grew up with and Tchaikovsky. But that’s it. I just think of the people who were alive a few days ago and now are not, whether Russian or Ukrainian. War is a terrible thing.

Russians are not Western in their political thought or traditions. They went from the tsars to the communists to the oligarchs. They just have never had a system of liberal democracy. I am not sure why they have been put into the position of Western nemesis when China really does represent more of a threat on so many levels.

As to the kulaks, my ex-husband’s grandfather was a kulak from Pskov, west of Moscow. He saw the writing on the wall and moved to Siberia before being relocated forcibly, taking his wife and seven children with him. When she died, he married a woman who already had four of her own and proceeded to have four more, the youngest of whom became my mother-in-law. The poverty was so intense that they didn’t have enough warm clothing and footwear for all the children so they set up a system where some of the children went to school in the morning, came home, handed over the winter clothing and the second lot went to school for the afternoon. They often went hungry.

By the time my mother-in-law was born in 1949, her two eldest half-brothers had already perished in a tank battle in Lvov. They were in the same tank together and in the same company as their father who, despite his age, volunteered to fight in WWII. He witnessed their deaths.

It’s 50 years old, but Phillip Knightley’s The First Casualty: The War Correspondent as Hero and Myth-Maker from the Crimea to Kosovo is an invaluable backgrounder at times like this.

Basically, you can’t believe a damn thing the media reports about wars and rumours of wars, and sensible people never have, especially when conflicts are only just in their early stages.

What I’m waiting to see is an account of how the State Department’s Ivy League smarties thought they were doing just great when a pro-Moscow president got the shove and they went all gung-ho to get Ukraine into NATO and cock a snook at Putin. That, of course, would need to be put in context of the nexus of corruption binding Ukraine and Democrats, especially top Democrats’ kids.

But we’ll have to wait for the MSM to get around to that. Wait a long, long time.

Sorry, Ed, but being from a common ethnic origin does not make Russians and Ukrainians one people. Maybe you’d like to say the same of the Germanic countries, say the Dutch and the Germans as per my example? I speak Russian as a second language so would expect Ukrainian to be difficult for me to understand. But it is the same for native Russian speakers such as my ex-husband.

Come on, Ed. You can do it. Given they’re all from Germanic origins, tell us again how the Germans, the Dutch and perhaps the Flemish are all one people. Because they are as closely linguistically and culturally linked as Ukrainians and Russians.

Ukraine and Russia Officials Negotiating a Meeting – Biden Administration Tells Zelenskyy to Stop, Only U.S. Permitted to Negotiate With Russia

February 25, 2022 | sundance | 130 Comments
Amid an intense conflict continuing, the government of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin are in negotiations for a meeting. However, the U.S. State Department does not want Zelenskyy and Putin to negotiate an end to hostilities.

Reuters – “Ukraine and Russia are discussing a place and time for talks, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s spokesman said on social media on Friday. “Ukraine was and remains ready to talk about a ceasefire and peace,” spokesman Sergii Nykyforov added. (link)

Unfortunately for Zelenskyy an end to the fighting would be against the interests of the Biden administration. Highlighting the point, the U.S. State Department does not want Zelenskyy and Putin to meet. The Biden administration conveys a very telling message; from their perspective saying only United States is permitted to negotiate with Russia on behalf of Ukraine. Zelenskyy needs to stay out of it.

WASHINGTON: Russia’s offer for talks with Ukraine is an attempt to conduct diplomacy “at the barrel of a gun”, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Friday (Feb 25), saying Russia must stop its bombing in Ukraine if it is serious about diplomacy.

“The arrogance and controlling attitude by the U.S. State Dept tells us all we need to know really.

The Biden administration has created this crisis between Russia and Ukraine for a convenient purpose, and the White House is not about to let Zelenskyy screw it up and create peace.

The U.S. wants President Zelenskyy to leave Ukraine so the State Department can take full control over the narrative. Zelensky is refusing to leave.

AeroSHARK thin film reduces drag on airplanes (Phys.org, 25 Feb)

Sounds like great idea for sailplanes.

welcome to 1986.

https://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/news/factsheets/Riblets.html

Yeah, I bought some made by 3M in 1987 after the America’s Cup. I still have it. It never caught on back then.
May be difficult to clean and maybe on a sailplane the flow changes direction as the angle of attack changes due pilot inputs or turbulence perhaps resulting in more drag rather than less overall.
I note the latest iteration claims far more modest gains than the 1980’s NASA puff piece although a 1.1% reduction in drag adds up and the designers would probably sell their grandmothers for that. A jet airliner spends a lot of time in cruise at a known nearly constant angle of attack so the grooves may indeed help.
