Uncle fester cherry picked 25 years.

He didn’t “cherry pick”. He referred to the last 25 years. The last X years can’t be “cherry picked”. It is what it is.

However , the chart goes back 50 years to 1970. Two of the regions show less snowfall and the one that shows not much change is encompassed in one of the other two charts. So he was wrong. (As I said earlier$. Let me know if you see the same pattern in the charts.

He wasn’t wrong. He referred expressly to 25 years.

On what basis do you assert that 50 years is a required measure for a climate trend? We were repeatedly told in the early years of this century that it was 15 to 17 years (actually we were told less by some people). When that proved inadequate for the alarmists’ needs they started murmuring about 30 years, but they’re actually keeping vewwwy vewwwy quiet about that whole issue because it doesn’t work for them. Certainly no-one seems to be claiming that more than 30 is needed and the majority view still seems to be that it’s much less.
There’s therefore nothing unscientific about saying that the last 25 years or thereabouts is a proper measure about what the climate is doing now, as opposed to what it was doing in the past.

And I don’t see anything in the trends for the last 25 years that’s inconsistent with BoN’s proposition. “Eurasia”, North America and the northern hemisphere contain quite different proportions of “too cold” and “not too cold”, and yet they’re remarkably consistent in showing no discernible change on BoN’s graph for the last 25 or thereabouts years.
Given that world snow cover is in the order of 35 billions of tonnes, a graph showing changes of a few million is really, if anything, making any trend look way bigger than it really is.
So I can’t see any reason to criticise BoN’s comment.

US to back Ukraine ‘as long as it takes’ – Biden

The US President vows to keep propping up the Ukrainian military’s war effort

US President Joe Biden has touted the “significant help” Washington and its NATO allies are providing to Kiev, and pledged an “ironclad commitment” to keep pumping Ukraine with weapons until it reclaims its entire territory from Russia.

“The price Ukrainian people are paying for this war is extremely high. But we’re gonna stay with them as long as they need our help,” Biden said in a ‘60 Minutes’ CBS News interview aired Sunday night.

The US leader said that with “the significant help we and our allies are giving them and the incredible bravery and the incredible determination of the Ukrainian people, are not losing a war, and they’re making gains in certain areas.”

This week, Biden authorized yet another $600 million in military assistance to Ukraine on top of the $675 million package announced last week. Since Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February, the Biden White House has pledged a total of $44.3 billion in aid to Kiev. Only part of it has been in cash, however, while the rest was the assessed value of weapons, ammunition, and training offered by the Pentagon. As of last week, the purely military aid amounted to $14.5 billion since February, on top of the $17.2 billion funneled into Ukraine since the 2014 coup.

Joe Biden Delivers a Mess of a 60 Minutes Interview, Leaves His Handlers Scrambling

Joe Biden appeared on 60 Minutes on Sunday evening, and it was an absolute disaster of an interview. As I type this, stories are already coming out about how he blindsided officials in his administration and how his handlers are scrambling to clean up the mess.

In fact, within an hour of the interview premiering, the first clarification had already dropped regarding comments the president made about defending Taiwan from a Chinese attack. That was the second time in the last few months that the administration has had to walk back Biden’s comments on the subject.

Things didn’t get better as the topics changed. When asked about inflation, Biden gave perhaps the worst answer imaginable.

The dismissive snark about an 8.3 inflation rate that is crushing the poor and middle-class is just astonishing to witness. His skin is so thin you can see straight through it, and while I know Biden doesn’t have to live with any of the consequences of his policies, you’d think he could at least fake it a little. Besides, his excuse doesn’t even make sense. Who cares if the rate only went up “an inch” if the overall rate is still sky-high? Core inflation continues to rise, mainly driven by food and housing (including rent) prices.

But if that exchange wasn’t bad enough, Biden decided to declare that “the pandemic is over” regarding the coronavirus.

Does that statement bother me? Not at all given that the pandemic has been over for me for years. But in regards to the administration, the president might as well have dropped a nuclear bomb in the middle of the White House. He provided no advance notice of his comments to any of his health officials, and there’s apparently a lot of chapped rear ends about it.

We aren’t done yet, though. Biden was pressed on his fitness for office, and he delivered a line that perfectly illustrates why he’s not fit for office. Honestly, it’s art.

Somewhere, Biden’s comms staffers are busily chain-smoking in anticipation of this week’s briefings. That’s how bad it was, and I could keep going with more clips.

Really, this is an interview that just doesn’t quit. Whoever greenlit it should never work in politics again.

Went on a scuba trip to the Abrolhos where we had a literal Swedish blonde bombshell on the tour. 2nd Day of the tour and she wouldnt get in the water, I asked her why and it was “shark week” for her.

4th day of the tour and we are heading back, for some reason the flybridge of the boat was standing room only.
Nothing to do with her sunbathing in a woolen knitted set of bathers. X-small size on the front deck.

First lecture in met course was the difference between weather and climate and how you don’t want to average more than 30 years or so at any given place as climate changes over that sort of time scale at any given place.
Boulder Dam. Before building it they measured the stream flow in the Colorado River for 40 years and guaranteed a given amount of water to each of the states sharing it. Built dam. Never did get that much water since. In the mid 70’s someone figured that Pinon pine growth rings were a good proxy for rain/snowfall. Turned out they had sampled the wettest 40 years in the previous 400. Has caused much court time as the states wrangled with the issue. I believe it eventually got settled IIRC in the 90’s.

Biden: ‘There’s Not a Single Thing that I’ve Observed at All that Would Affect Me or the United States Relative to My Son Hunter’

President Joe Biden said Sunday on CBS’s “60 Minutes” that he was not concerned about his son Hunter Biden’s behavior in any way.

Anchor Scott Pelley said, “His son, Hunter, has been a lightning rod for suspicion. Hunter Biden’s former addiction to crack cocaine led to a life he describes as nonstop depravity. He has also acknowledged a federal investigation into his taxes. Congress investigated Hunter Biden’s job with a Ukrainian company at the time that his father ran Ukrainian policy in the Obama administration. A Republican investigation, however, uncovered no wrongdoing by then-Vice President Biden.”

Pelley asked, “Mr. President, if you run again, Republicans are most likely to go after your son Hunter once again. I wonder what you would like to say about your son and whether any of his troubles have caused conflicts for you or for the United States.”

Biden said, “I love my son, number one. He fought an addiction problem. He overcame it. He wrote about it. And, no, there’s not a single thing that I’ve observed at all that would affect me or the United States relative to my son Hunter.”

Hunter Biden is the subject of a brand new narrative film, My Son Hunter, marking Breitbart’s expansion into film distribution. The film was directed by Robert Davi (Goonies, License to Kill, Die Hard) and stars Laurence Fox (Victoria, Inspector Lewis, The Professor and The Madman) as Hunter Biden; Gina Carano (The Mandalorian, Deadpool, Heist) as a Secret Service agent; and John James (Dynasty) as Joe Biden. It was produced by Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney (Gosnell movie, FBI Lovebirds: Undercovers) from the Unreported Story Society. The film is available RIGHT NOW for Streaming and Downloading at MySonHunter.com. The trailer below has been viewed almost 5 million times across social media.

Sunday Talks, John Ratcliffe Questions the DOJ/FBI Classified Designations in Mar-a-Lago Documents

September 18, 2022 | Sundance

In this lengthy interview with John Ratcliffe and Maria Bartiromo, the former Director of National Intelligence, the man who has likely seen every document that may have eventually ended up in Mar-a-Lago, is challenging the nature of the classified status of those documents. Ratcliffe does not believe the Mar-a-Lago documents are true national security documents, but rather documents that outline fraudulent ‘sources and methods’ used by the DOJ/FBI in their Trump targeting operation.

Keep in mind that as the DNI during 2020, Ratcliffe saw the documents that eventually became the material President Trump declassified and left with the DOJ to release after the Durham investigation was complete. If Ratcliffe’s suspicions are correct, and there is more valid reason to support his suspicions than oppose them, then the entire construct of the DOJ-NSD operation to retrieve those documents from Mar-a-Lago is factually one big cover-up operation.

Ratcliffe suspects the documents are essentially the DOJ and FBI work products, including interviews with ‘sources’ like Igor Danchenko, from their fabricated case against President Trump. If accurate, the objective of the DOJ/FBI would be to avoid sunlight on their political targeting operation. This viewpoint makes sense when you consider the DOJ/FBI position that no one should ever be allowed to look at those documents, including the appointed Special Master in the case, Judge Raymond Dearie. on the climate wars, I saw Ian Plimer once on Lateline explaining that you can go very far back in time looking at thermometer readings but the most accurate dates for climate data are from after the commencement of the satellite era (I believe he referred to late 70’s/early 80s).

Tim

He didn’t “cherry pick”. He referred to the last 25 years. The last X years can’t be “cherry picked”. It is what it is.

Yes, he cherry picked. Of course he did because why else would one use a 50 year chart showing snowfall trend to be heading in a downward direction. However, he picks 25 years when it doesn’t. Why did he choose 25 years out of a 50 year chart, which suggests the opposite of what Fester was claiming if not to cherry pick?

Moreover, the AGW theory is based on the broad idea that man caused warming calibrated with the advent of the Industrial Revolution so ANY data that goes back further is better than data of shorter time frame. Take a look at Hallward’s argument posted earlier. He’s going back to the Holocene! Ironically, Hallward’s point of heading back to the Holocene is in fact silently calling Uncle Fester’s 25 year gambit bullshit.

He wasn’t wrong. He referred expressly to 25 years.

We know. He cherry picked.

On what basis do you assert that 50 years is a required measure for a climate trend?

I don’t make any claim to your assertion. However I would say that anything that goes back in time is more worthwhile than a shorter frame especially if the Industrial Revolution is significant in the claim. It is.

I disagree Tim, for the reasons I expressed.

As I said, 50 years is better than 25, 100 years would be better than 50 and 200 years would be better than 100 assuming accurate data and I have no reason to suspect the period before the 25 year cherry picking was less accurate. See what I’m getting at?

Given that world snow cover is in the order of 35 billions of tonnes, a graph showing changes of a few million is really, if anything, making any trend look way bigger than it really is.

Sure, make this claim and I don’t disagree necessarily, but why just pick 25 years when the 50 year period has a clearer outline

So I can’t see any reason to criticise BoN’s comment.

No problem, I’m fine with you disagreeing, but at least look at what I’ve said.

This dropped into my inbox earlier today…..

There’s this news out of Alabama, where the T.R. Miller High School has decided that bake sales are waaaay too 1990s for raising money for the athletic department.

Instead, the school is raffling off a bunch of firearms – a bold decision in the face of the near-endless stream of school shootings from the gun-crazy US of A.

Organisers say that, despite the impossibly bad optics of it all, everything’s fine – as these particular guns are the ones people would use for hunting, and not the kind you’d want to be bringing to school because they’re a bit daggy. Or something.

Second cab off the “honestly, America… WTF is happening over there?” list is the fact that famously not-Christian-Friendly rapper Eminem has made his official debut on the Billboard Christian Top 100, after a gospel track he performed on with DJ Khaled debuted at Number 1 on the chart.

The song “Use This Gospel” is a far cry from the rapper’s usual expletive-laden fare, and an even further departure from his lengthy ode to the glory of drugs with D12’s Purple Pills.

Those two events had us wondering if we’d woken up this morning in Bizarro World, where everything’s opposite and nothing makes sense – but all it took was this one news story to set things straight.

The fact that an armed Pennsylvania man in a rainbow wig, who was attempting to ‘restore Trump as President’ had been arrested by police at a Dairy Queen outlet was all the reassurance we needed that everything in the US is working just as nature intended.

God Bless America.

I agree with you, the upticking was okay for people and I actually thought there was no problem. I silently disagreed with some over at Discord that it was being abused. That is until yesterday and I saw it can be “stolen” by dishonest turds to gaslight.
I’m the side that if something is being abused to mislead then cut it off because it then becomes a fakenews issue and general dishonesty.

Blame the dishonesy dickheads who ruined a good thing and I’m sure you can figure out who they are.

Putin – Xi Is On My Side

From Martin Armstrong –

“China is no stranger to Western alienation and hostilities. Putin is looking to strengthen his alliance with China by affirming that Russia will adhere to China’s domestic policies as long as China repays the favor. “We intend to firmly adhere to the principle of ‘One China’,” Putin stated as Taiwan has become a hot topic. Putin went on to say that he “condemns provocations by the United States and their satellites in the Taiwan Strait.” China was bordering on neutrality until recently coming under fire for its One China policy. China can now see itself in Russia.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin met this Thursday in Uzbekistan for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine. Both want to end NATO expansion and agreed to a “no-limits” partnership. Xi warned Biden at the beginning of the year that sanctions on Russia could cripple the global economy. The US warned China to stay out of its affairs but then provoked China by sending leaders like Pelosi to Taiwan. The New World Order first targeted Donald Trump in an effort to remove him from power. Putin is second on their list, followed by Xi.

China knows that the US is in a decline and is strategically placing its finances and policies accordingly. When I met with the central bank of China, they were not bureaucrats – they were traders. When I was asked by people in the US Treasury upon my return what it was like, I responded that they only hired people with experience. They sent everyone to work on trading desks around the world, and then they returned to China to run the central bank. The West hires academics who believe reading a few books is sufficient experience. Similarly, politicians no longer understand diplomatic relations and are willing to sacrifice the economy to uphold petty perpetual disagreements while demonizing.”

JC and Sancho campaign to remove the up ticking.

(As someone correctly said about Driller, he will lie about a comment he made 15 minutes later by denying he said it). I’ve never upticked a comment just because I “liked” the commenter, nor have I upticked anything that was cruel or trolling. And I don’t approve of removing comments unless they’re doxxing.

Comments have to stand on their own merits. They are either true or not. They are either well argued or not. They can either inform or bore.

I was awake and saw it appear, then I looked at a couple of other sites, and returned 10-15 minutes later to see 50 upticks. But there were only 5-6 comments between then and about 6:30.
Fifty enthusiastic uptickers, but not one was moved to actually comment.

Jesus and Satan have a discussion as to who is the better programmer. This goes on for a few hours until they come to an agreement to hold a contest, with God as the judge. They sit themselves at their computers and begin. They type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen, for several hours straight. Seconds before the end of the competition, a bolt of lightning strikes, taking out the electricity. Moments later, the power is restored, and God announces that the contest is over. He asks Satan to show what he has come up with. Satan is visibly upset, and cries “I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out”. “Very well, then” says God “let us see if Jesus fared any better”. Jesus enters a command, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers. Satan is astonished. He stutters “B-b-but how? I lost everything, yet Jesus’ program is intact. How did he do it?” God smiled all-knowingly “Jesus saves”.

Mike and Mark are identical twin brothers.

Mike is a really good guy. Helps his friends in need, visits their mother regularly and is a pillar of their community.

Mark is a real ass. Self-centred, steals from his friends ignores their mother and is an all-around douche bag.

One day driving together, Mark tries to beat a train at a crossing.

They both die.

Mike goes to heaven and Mark to hell. After Mike gets settled onto his cloud and enjoying the angels playing their harps, he asks God if he can peek in on Mark. God eventually relents and takes Mike to see the eternal damnation that is being wrought upon Mark.

Mike looks down and there’s Mark, sitting on big plush recliner with a beautiful blonde on his lap and a frosty can of his favourite beer in his hand!

Mike turns to God and says “This is crazy! I want a blonde on my lap and a cold beer! Mark was awful on earth, why does he get blondes and beers and I get to listen to harps playing and hang out on a cloud all day?” God says “Do you see that frosty can of beer and beautiful blonde? The beer has a hole in it, the blonde doesn’t”.

Then there’s government, which is slowest of the lot.

I once worked for the Department of Defence and we had a horrible reputation for being slow payers.
The root cause was incompetence in processing payments and a couldn’t-care-less attitude from the management classes.
Then several suppliers put a 3 month freeze on deliveries.
Management suddenly could care.
Massive overtime to fix backlog.
Immediate steps taken to fix incompetence of people and systems.

Chinese Project Management

I have no idea how this works except that:

Two weeks ago I taught them what a Gantt Chart was and what a critical path was.

(They were running everything off a “job list” spreadsheet, I managed to get it to produce a Gantt Chart and a critical path with some manual intervention, they still don’t understand exactly how it works.)

Vast amounts of sensitive equipment is stuffed or requires major repair because it got delivered two years ago in a plywood box, and has sat out in the weather ever since. They could have saved millions on this project by simply ordering equipment when it was required and preserving it properly.

There are ongoing requests for plant modifications and tweaks. Precisely zero 3D CAD modelling used in China for fuel storage and handling plants. They continue to be very happy with my quick and dirty 3D cad models for discussion with the client and associated shop drawings.

Today they just realised that the shop drawings are derived directly from the cad model and not me scratching around with some 2D CAD package.

The area from (say) the Ural mountains east to the Pacific represents the lion’s share of Russia’s mineral wealth. Take that away and Russia will be a sliver of its former self, geographically and economically. Short of (currently) unimaginable episodes that decimate Russia’s political, economic and military dominance in its own country, the Chinese may be waiting a very long while.

Not sure of the areas covered by the so-called “unequal treaties”, but I doubt it would extend west of Lake Baikal. Still plenty left for Tsar Vlad to exploit.

Correct, which is why I said that “short of (currently) unimaginable episodes……”. Although Xi may covet parts of eastern and south eastern Russia, the commercial arrangements between Xi and Putin serves both their purposes.

I have mentioned previously that Xi is convinced of the decline of the West and rise of the East. China’s time as the dominant economic and military force on the planet approaches – slowly but inexorably – and to ensure this, they need resources that are not linked to the West. Enter one Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin who is no fan of the West and more than happy to oblige with all the resources China could possibly need.

Two nuclear armed neighbours, each looking to leverage/achieve their own destiny at the expense of the West, getting along like a couple of hormone rampant teenagers whilst the doddering old world order is wondering were they put their glasses.

The brain is built by protein, and runs on cholesterol
We need to keep red meat in our hearts, and on the dinner table

The dry weight of the brain is 60% fat. Most of the cholesterol is stored in cell membranes and particularly the myelin sheath on the axons. The brain has its own source of cholesterol production independent of the liver. The brain runs on sugar, it loves sugar. An evolutionary biologist has highlighted one of the differences between our brain and other primates is the x4 increase in sugar transporters. The brain can run on ketones and is often using both sugar and ketones for energy production. The mistake many people make is to assume that because they are on a ketogenic diet therefore the brain is relying principally on ketones. I seriously doubt that because even on a keto diet plasma blood levels remain in normal ranges and the brain is getting the lion’s share of that sugar. I’m not confident that cholesterol is an energy substrate. It is typically stored in membranes and used for hormone production.

BIDEN WATCH

Biden’s Coming Iran Fiasco

He wants to spare Tehran and its nuclear plans of any congressional oversight

President Joe Biden has followed in President Barack Obama’s footsteps in rewarding Iranian bad behavior with carrots rather than punishing it with sticks. Biden is desperately seeking a new Iranian nuclear deal despite prevarication by Tehran and continued troublemaking in the Middle East. Worse still, after crafting a bad deal, the Biden administration is reportedly going to attempt to avoid congressional oversight by advertising it as a continuation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that President Donald Trump walked away from.

Since 1974, Democrats have repeatedly shown themselves to be weak sisters on foreign policy and national security, but Biden is proving to be the worst of the lot. At least he is consistent. As a member of the post-Watergate Senate class of 1974, he was a leader in selling out our South Vietnamese allies by refusing further funding of the Vietnam War, an act that ensured the fall of Saigon. Democrats were instrumental in engineering the communist Sandinista takeover in Nicaragua in 1979 and watched from the sidelines as radical Islamists took power in Iran. Meanwhile, an emboldened Soviet Union felt free to invade Afghanistan.

Under Clinton, the United States made some toothless efforts to stop al-Qaeda in the wake of the World Trade Center bombings and the repeated attacks on American citizens overseas. This set the scene for 9/11. Obama’s feeble response to the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons on its own people emboldened the Russian- and Iranian-backed Assad regime to perpetrate continued atrocities on fellow Syrians; these victims included not just those who were fighting for freedom but innocents who happened to get in the way as well.

Now, we have Biden. Not content with having engineered the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, he wants to engineer a return to the lifting of sanctions against a regime in Tehran that has repeatedly shown contempt for our country and its leaders and flouted international norms. Let’s take a moment to review Iran’s actions since Biden became commander-in-chief. First, Iranians have continued to meddle in the affairs of the struggling democracy in Iraq. Their malign influence has been instrumental in ensuring that a stable Iraqi government has not been formed since 2011. The only contribution that Biden has made in the struggle against Islamic extremism has been the drone strike that killed the incompetent al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul. Zawahiri would not have been there to begin with but for Biden’s craven abandonment of Afghanistan. Iran’s ayatollahs have also created mischief in places as diverse as Syria and Yemen. While indirectly negotiating with the United States over a nuclear agreement, the Iranians have tried to hijack unarmed U.S. drone reconnaissance ships on the high seas. Tehran has demonstrated no good faith whatsoever.

I have not talked to a single foreign policy analyst who believes that Tehran will abandon its aspirations to gain nuclear weapons under a renewed version of JPCOA. It will do what it has always done, which is lie, deceive, and impede legitimate inspections of its nuclear facilities while our feckless president trolls for a Nobel prize for his efforts to “stop proliferation.” He is neither respected nor feared in Tehran, and that is very dangerous.

Contrast this with Trump’s performance. In response to blatant meddling by Tehran in Iraq, he ordered the killing of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, Iran’s alleged war criminal commander of the Quds Force, and threatened worse when the Iranians retaliated with a missile attack on a U.S. base in Iraq. Then, things got quiet until the 2020 election.

AlloDerm: A skin tissue for grafting made from treated donated cadavers.
Ok slightly off, but a legitimate bit of medical procedures right?

Used quite a bit in dentistry..
As well as breast reconstruction.
Also of quite a bit of use for Gynaecology for reconstruction after disease/cancers etc..

All a bit gross if you think about it, walking around with a dead persons tissue grafted to you, but I think quite legitimate medical procedures which benefit human health.

Now for the unspeakable horror part.
Creation of a neovagina is usually necessary in the following cases: congenital absence of the vagina, gender assignment surgery, vaginal contracture and stenosis, and reconstruction following neoplastic resective surgery or radiotherapy.

Skin harvested from donor cadavers is used to create mens vaginas..
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4058296/ (has pics of aforementioned horrors beyond.. etc etc)

There is talk on the interwebs of fetal tissue being used, but this seems unlikely to me as it would be too delicate for the procedure surely?
So as it is, signing up to be a organ donor could see your skin getting a second lease of life as a ladyboys lovepocket.

Welcome to current year.

THE NATION’S PULSE

The Political War President — Trump Live From Ohio

He hasn’t lost a step.

I believe political and cultural war is now unavoidable. The other side has crossed the Rubicon. They’ve done more than insult us. They’ve threatened us. Joe Biden and his entire governmental apparatus — spearheaded by AG Merrick Garland’s Justice Department and SecDef Lloyd Austin’s Pentagon — have publicly condemned all patriotic, peaceful opposers to the Marxist transformation of our country as anti-democratic traitors.

And they have put their agents where their mouths are, raiding Trump’s home and intimidating MAGA supporters in true Stasi-like fashion. Now they must be made to pay for it, and so extremely that such a domestic menace will never resurface. This said, Trump’s Youngstown, Ohio speech was the finest, most defiant he has ever given, and the perfect response to Biden’s The Great Dictator screed in Philadelphia.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a more radicalized or dangerous time in our country,” Trump said. “I watched Biden the other day with the red behind him — and CNN changed it to pink, because they wanted it to look better. But that was terrible, the terrible words that were said. But that’s where they’re coming from. But you know what? We’re strong and we’re smart. We’re smarter than them. We’re stronger than them. Our cruel and vindictive political class is not just coming after me. They’re coming after you through me. They’ve already taken away your vote. They’re taking away your voice. And now they want to take away your freedom. And it’s not going to happen.”

Trump delivered his oration with his typical humor that drives leftists insane. How can he be so flippant, they fume, when the walls are closing in? One reason could be the huge legal double victory Trump had Thursday over the same Garland DOJ that defiled his Mar-a-Lago home. Federal Judge Eileen Cannon not only ignored Justice’s demand she qualify her decision to appoint a Special Master on the FBI-seized documents or face appeal, she assigned the man the Trump team wanted for the job (Raymond Dearie).

Trump even had fun with the “deadly serious” January 6 Committee, calling it “the sham unselect committee.” “Which I thought ended a couple of weeks ago when Liz Cheney lost by a record number. Nobody has ever lost so big before.” That must have stuck in Cheney’s Trump-deranged, soon-to-be civilian craw.

However, Trump was deadly serious, unusually eloquent, and disturbingly accurate in his condemnation of the present statist tyranny: “They want to censor you from the internet, banish you from the public square, get you fired from your jobs, target you for destruction with 87,000 new IRS agents.… Use the FBI to spy on patriotic parents, and criminalize political dissent as if we were a Third World country. But the thugs and tyrants attacking our movement … have no idea of the sleeping giant they have awoken. The American people will never accept the corruption and the ruination of our beloved country.”

Ultimately, Trump hit a high note he had never reached before, in what may one day be known as the “We are a nation” speech, like Ronald Reagan’s 1964 endorsement of the doomed Barry Goldwater became the “A Time for Choosing” speech.

Some excerpts from late in his remarks:

CHINA WATCH

Biden’s 2023 Navy Budget Request Increases Our Geopolitical Peril

Any decrease in the U.S. Navy’s size and capabilities is music to China’s ears.

The Biden administration has requested funding for nine additional ships for the U.S. Navy in the 2023 fiscal year budget, but it also plans to retire 24 ships. In the next five years, the Navy is projected to reduce its fleet from 298 ships to 280. It is also proposing to decrease the number of sailors by 10,000 over the next five years. And its total budget request for the Navy, even though it would represent a 5 percent growth compared to fiscal year 2022’s spending, still falls short of inflation and therefore is effectively a defense cut.

The Heritage Foundation notes that Biden’s budget request for the Navy “trashes” Congress’ stated requirement in the Fiscal Year 2018 National Defense Authorization Act that the Navy increase its fleet to 355 ships by the middle of the next decade.

Biden’s budget request is also a far cry from the Trump administration’s plan to build 82 new ships by 2026 with a goal of reaching a 500-ship Navy by 2045, according to the Congressional Research Service’s August 25, 2022, report on Navy Force Structure and Shipbuilding Plans: Background and Issues for Congress.

Danby is quite blunt: A smaller fleet means “China handily defeating the United States in Taiwan—and elsewhere.”

Yoshihara is a contributor to a recent Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment (CSBA) study that warns that China’s plan is to consolidate its power regionally, then expand globally.

To accomplish this, China is expected to field five aircraft carriers and up to 10 nuclear ballistic missile submarines by 2030. The CSBA report urges America and its allies to “prepare to face a China that poses both a regional and, increasingly, a global military threat.”

US Federal Reserve rate needs to hit 5pc to tame US inflation

US interest rates will need to go higher and stay there longer with persistent inflation showing no evidence of abating despite rapid monetary tightening, prompting ANZ to upgrade its peak Fed funds rate forecast to a high of 5 per cent.

ANZ economists now expect the Federal Reserve’s tightening cycle to extend well into the first half of 2023, and peak between 4.75 per cent and 5 per cent by the second quarter of next year. That is 1 percentage point, or 100 basis points, higher, and almost six months later, than its previous Fed rates forecast.

Head of G3 economists Brian Martin, and senior international economist Tom Kenny, cited persistent core inflation, and particularly core services inflation, which they describe as “sticky” and will take more time to moderate.

They add that significantly higher rates for longer are needed to achieve the softer labour market required to get inflation back to the 2 per cent Fed target.

“The nuts and bolts of the inflation data make for uncomfortable reading. Whilst there is evidence that headline inflation may be rolling over, this is not so for core measures,” they said.

“A big worry is that core services inflation is on an extended run of high monthly readings. On an annual basis, this measure reached a cyclical high of 6.8 per cent year-on-year last month, its highest level in 40 years.”

Mr Martin and Mr Kenny have also taken cues from a hardening in guidance since chairman Jerome Powell spoke at the Jackson Hole symposium in August saying the Fed is “determined not to make a mistake of under-tightening and allowing elevated inflation to become entrenched”.

“The Fed needs to raise the real Federal funds rate considerably beyond current levels for policy to become restrictive enough to bear down on inflation,” they said. “We think that if a policy error is made, it will be on the side of overtightening.”

One per cent on the table

ANZ’s forecast comes ahead of a big week for global rates with at least 10 central banks due to meet to decide policy settings.

Most watched will be the Fed, which is expected to push through its third consecutive 0.75 percentage point increase, taking the Fed funds rate to a 3 per cent to 3.25 per cent range.

Markets aren’t ruling out a blockbuster rise, pricing in a 20 per cent chance for a 1 percentage point increase.

The Bank of England, the Bank of Japan and the central banks of Norway and Sweden are in action in a holiday-impacted week. The BoE is expected to lift its benchmark rate by 0.5 percentage points, with a risk of 0.75 percentage point move, after postponing its decision in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

ANZ believes a 0.75 percentage point increase is the most likely outcome for the Fed.

BetaShares chief economist David Bassanese concurred, but isn’t ruling out a larger surprise.

“The equity market has managed to rally on each day of Fed policy meetings so far this year – on relief that the outcome was not a lot worse than the already extremely bad outcome expected,” he said.

“It’s for this reason there is a risk the Fed might deliberately try to surprise this week – with a 1 per cent hike without any warning.”

ANZ urged the BoE to push through a minimum of a 0.75 percentage point increase, although 1 percentage point would be “appropriate”.

“The BoE must get ahead of the inflation problem,” it said.

New highs

ANZ’s 5 per cent terminal rate is above current market forecasts, but it is not alone in being hawkish. In an interview with The Australian Financial Review, UBS Asset Management’s Barry Gill wouldn’t rule out interest rates above 5 per cent to get a grip on surging inflation.

Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers also says the Fed may have to get to 5 per cent.

“I think we’re more likely to end up above 4.5 per cent than we are to end up below 4.5 per cent. And it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if that rate has to get above 5 per cent,” Mr Summers told Bloomberg over the weekend.

Market-implied rate expectations increased over the past week. Swap rates now peak at 4.5 per cent in March 2023, a full percentage point higher than was expected after the Fed’s last meeting in July, according to Bloomberg.

Can we have a drop down box up top to check who is who on the nickname front, and add in the poster who is insisting on using it?

I hear it’s affording them that’s the problem.

That was only a couple of years ago. It all started (that time) when the Russian Embassy in China posted “Happy Birthday Vladivostok” to celebrate the city’s 160th anniversary (which, to be fair, was a little insensitive).

That gave a few Chinese a serious prod with some saying Russia had stolen the area under the Treaty of Beijing. For some inexplicable reason the Chinese Embassy in India responded with a rebuke of the Russian Embassy’s original post.

As fast as it started it seemed to die down just as quickly although I have no doubt the sentiment lingers in some.

I’m watching the mourners in the Westminster Abbey and most of them don’t look very mournful, lots of smiling and chatting. The least they could have done is to remain expressionless. Just shows you, even in death the elites are different, they don’t think they have to fake it.

NSW to scrap mandatory masks on public transport

From Wednesday, masks will no longer be needed on public transport, as well as in taxis and rideshare vehicles.

After South Australia announced it would be removing its mask mandate on public transport this week, NSW has revealed it will follow suit.

From Wednesday, masks will no longer be needed on public transport and public transport waiting areas, as well as in taxis and rideshare vehicles.

The decision was made after a meeting of the state’s COVID Economic Recovery Committee, formerly known as the crisis cabinet, today.

Masks will remain mandatory in hospitals, health facilities and aged care facilities.

In a statement, the state’s health minister, Brad Hazzard, said masks still played an important role in reducing transmission of COVID-19.

“Continuing to wear a mask in crowded areas will be particularly important for people who have underlying health conditions or who are vulnerable to COVID-19 infection for other reasons. Wearing a mask in these settings will not only protect those around you, but will also reduce your risk of infection,” he said.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet described the decision as “common sense”, while Transport Minister David Elliott said he had “no doubt” the public would continue to use what they knew about the transmission of COVID-19.

“Commuters will be pleased to hear this news as they will now able to make a personal decision and have a choice about when they wear a mask – particularly in outdoor public transport areas,” Elliott said.

More likely they just don’t know how to conduct themselves in church, Crossie.

John H.says:

The dry weight of the brain is 60% fat. Most of the cholesterol is stored in cell membranes and particularly the myelin sheath on the axons. The brain has its own source of cholesterol production independent of the liver. The brain runs on sugar, it loves sugar. An evolutionary biologist has highlighted one of the differences between our brain and other primates is the x4 increase in sugar transporters. ..

See, as a long-time lurker, here and at Sinc’s Cat, that’s the kind of interesting stuff I come here for and would like to uptick. Instead we suffer with the continually abusive Mr Kreosote and his canine sycophant spewing bile about manipulation of upticks. Maybe a month on the sidelines would do them both a world of good. It certainly would the rest of us. More information, less abuse.

And by the way, thanks for your post John H.
