Progressive policy is all carrots on crime, drugs and homelessness — and it’s failing utterly
By Post Editorial Board
Oregon’s disastrous 18-month-old experiment in drug legalization is a lesson in why progressive social policy routinely fails: It’s all carrots, no sticks.
The state dropped punishments for possession of heroin, meth, cocaine, and other hard drugs to a fine.
The result? Less than 1% of eligible users admitted to the state’s costly therapy program —while opioid overdoses have shot up by 56%.
It’s the same story in New York, where criminal justice “reforms” has more teens carrying and shooting guns — and more getting shot. Young and old, serial offenders walk free until they get caught drawing innocent blood.
Or look at San Francisco, where woke politicians offered nothing but services and treatment as the homeless, many with mental health or addiction issues, overwhelm the city (and ignore the offers). ‘Frisco’s last tally of homeless hit 7,800, the second-highest level since 2005.
Look at the southern border, where President Biden, national Dems, and big-name non-profits are beckoning illegal migrants in by the million with material aid and whiffs of de facto citizenship.
All policies vastly increase the amount of human suffering in the world — and all are undertaken in the name of compassion, the marquee virtue of contemporary progressives.
But making it easier for a heroin addict to shoot up is the opposite of compassion. So is removing real consequences when a kid starts heading down a criminal path. And letting homeless people suffer and die instead of forcing them to get off the street and get help. And waving illegal migrants in with zero plan for them to find jobs or housing and zero concern for the border towns overwhelmed by the influx.
That America’s most vulnerable groups are overrepresented among criminals, addicts, and the homeless, and so are disproportionately harmed by these terrible policies, doesn’t seem to ruffle lefty feathers in the slightest — proving yet again that progressive politicos and officials are all talks when it comes to actually help the disadvantaged.
“Carrots only” policy wrecks lives, communities and cities. It’s time to bring back sticks.
Drugs..
Legalise downers and space out types.
Keep speed and go fast stuff illegal.
As for cost. A vial ofmedical grade morphine is less than $5.
Most of the strong shit was invented to mimic morph.
Also have the maturity to realise a proportion of users will become pisswreck types. But no greater proportion than now.
And lastly a drug that can make an underage kid give up their arse in an alleyway to a rando with cash has to carry some massive penalties for those who supply it to them.
So even ending the drug trade won’t remove all law enforcement needs.
Good for them. But there’re only so many rich Greens in Australia. Maybe they can move to Malaysia like Bufori did.

Yeah but Naa, there’s no Snowflake in Ice Ice Baby.
Maybe I should have mentioned Vanilla Ice, in 1991 he charted US no.1 with To The Extreme and the Ice Ice Baby single, with platinum in Australia. Eminem and Tom MacDonald both acknowledge him as an influence. But To The Extreme was not extreme, except maybe to Bing Crosby fans. It did have a hip hop format, but it was a clean cut, watered down blancmange of Rap, with most of its provenance in Disco, Pop and House. But he was something of a one album wonder, and he never really charted after Ice Ice Baby. Listening to his later, commercially unsuccessful work, you can hear sounds from Captain Beefheart to Little Feat, but overall more influence from Rock, Funk and Punk, rather than than Rap. He sure was versatile.
But the main reason I didn’t mention Vanilla Ice was lack of space, its hard to precis a broad genre with thousands of influences in one paragraph. For the same reason I didn’t raise Kanye West, or Beat Poetry, which could be seen as an early form of rap, and may be what Dot refers to as a pre-1970s white roots. But even mentioning poetry would require some reference to Mathew Arnold, John Keats and Sophocles, to randomly pick a few from a million others. (OK, Arnold is not really a random reference).
I focused on Eminem because he is the highest selling Rapper in history and explicitly political and anti Trump. Like MacDonald, I was personally dismayed by his leftist segue into The Establishment. I was sort of a fan of his, turned on to him by my sons 20 odd years ago, who absolutely loved him. I thought that deep down he was on our side, but he is a hypocrite, and he is being called out as such.

Teacher says students in her district pass the super-racist standardized tests because they’re ‘white and not hungry’
Remember when Joe Biden was giving a campaign speech and said that “poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids”? We’re thankful he’s not a teacher. But TikTok has made us question a whole lot of teachers and how they ended up in charge of children. We’re not sure why teachers are so comfortable doing confessionals on TikTok, but it’s really reinforced the very worst perceptions we’ve had of the profession.
Here’s a teacher complaining about standardized tests and how some school districts like hers have been rated as “distinguished.” It seems the reason students in the district are able to do well on the “super-racist” standardized tests is because they’re “probably white and not hungry.” Maybe hungry kids can be just as bright and talented as white kids. Are there any white kids who are hungry?

Former footy great Sam Newman has launched an extraordinary attack on the AFL after forcing footy fans to endure multiple ‘welcome to country’ speeches and a eulogy for a ‘heroin addicted indigenous felon’ at last week’s grand final.
In a long-winded rant, Newman took aim at the league for what he described as ‘virtuous, patronising nonsense’, even taking time to insult transgender former coach Dani Laidley.
‘We had the indigenous show of just nonsense. And then, the only thing they didn’t have is maybe they could have put Dani Laidley in an open car and driven her around at half time in the back of a Jeep or something. I mean, seriously,’ Newman moaned.
The outspoken Newman took the opportunity to mock the AFL and indigenous icon Uncle Jack Charles during his podcast, You Cannot Be Serious, which he hosts alongside former AFL star Don Scott.
‘The grand final day was marred by two things… this patronising nonsense about us welcoming the original landowners to this country,’ Newman began his tirade.
‘Absolutely we admire and we respect and we give thanks to the traditional land owners for where the game is to be played and we acknowledge that.
‘But the virtuous, patronising nonsense that the AFL go on with. A patronising campaign to foster this feigned indignation to divert from their own paranoid white privilege – all they do is drive a wedge between the footballing public, yet we see through it.’
Newman slammed the AFL for forcing football fans to watch not one, but two welcome to country speeches before the ball was even bounced.
‘We had a man with a beard came out and told us… about where the boundaries of all the various tribes and things go. Just an absolute propaganda chat about nothing,’ Newman said.
‘And then, if that wasn’t enough… then the CEO’s brother gave us welcome to country.’
But Newman saved his biggest spray for Uncle Jack Charles, who was a prominent figure on NITV’s Yokayi Footy and had featured as the voice of the 2022 AFL finals advertising campaign.
Before his death earlier this month, ‘Uncle Jack’ performed a monologue on Yokayi footy celebrating the contribution of Indigenous people as ‘our modern day warriors’.
‘And then a man with the jolly title of Uncle Jack. They did a eulogy to an indigenous man called Uncle Jack, who I believe didn’t play football at all,’ Newman told Scott.
‘Why would you have to actually give him a eulogy at the grand final. For what reason? It’s sheer projection to its patronising nonsense.
‘We had three references to indigenous people. Good on em, but I mean how many times did they have to fall over themselves to show that we’re being woke, we’re enlightened – we don’t have to be told that.’
Newman said he was further enraged when he did some research on Uncle Jack.
‘I don’t know why the New York Times got into this… now I’m just reading this out: “Jack Charles is one of Australia’s leading indigenous activists and who’s been the grandfather of Aboriginal theatre, but whose heroin addiction and (preference) for burglary landed him in jail throughout his life, died”,’ Newman scoffed.
‘So I don’t care what he’s done, I just want to know why he’s occupied any space or any time at the grand final.’
Newman claimed disgraced ex-footballer Wayne Carey had more reason to be honoured at the grand final than Uncle Jack.
‘And if he was a heroin addict and if he was a felon, where would that leave someone like Wayne Carey?
‘Wayne Carey, who has been ostracised from every AFL job, from every broadcasting commitment – a job that he’s had – because he was found with some crushed-up anti-depressants in a nightclub,’ Newman said.
‘So he gets railroaded. He actually played football Wayne Carey… he’s been a great commentator and he’s been completely thrown under the bus and yet Uncle Jack Charles – good on him. And I see he’s getting a state funeral. Good on him.’
While Newman said he held no personal grudge against Uncle Jack, he believed he had no business being honoured at the grand final.
‘If you could tell me why he occupied space at the grand final after we had a welcome to country from the CEO’s brother, we had a bloke with a beard tell us about the history of where the rivers run and who owns them and where our boundaries are. It’s just virtuous crap.’
Newman went onto highlight comments from First Nations people, who themselves have been critical in recent times of the ceremonies on account of them ‘causing division’.
‘How many times do we have to be told… they should be honestly ashamed of themselves because all they’re doing is, they’re not uniting people, they’re driving a wedge between the footballing public,’ Newman said.
‘They then had a non-binary band at half time – good on ya… if people think that’s good then fair enough. So they covered that base.’
Newman is no stranger to controversy.
Last year he had a crack at a transgender woman who won a hotdog eating competition in the United States.
‘You’d think she’d be good at eating hotdogs in that case wouldn’t you,’ Newman said at the time.
He also caused a stir in 2020 after suggesting an iconic image of 1993 image of former Saints champion Nicky Winmar was not a stance about racism, but a show of ‘guts’.

I think most of the Cats would take heart from the message that Tom MacDonald and his ilk are promoting. The guy is very thoughtful and highly intelligent. His mutilated visage is a real challenge; I would like to think that he sacrificed himself so that he could communicate to the underclasses, but the truth is more prosaic than that. What is clear is that he came close to self annihilation, just another white boy victim of the system, but he had an epiphany and now struggles towards the light, and does his best to encourage others.

Correct. Greenwich (I’ve had some dealings with him) is a sinister toxic individual who should be kept far away from power. And this is why Chris Minns and Labor will win bigly next March, and why Parrothead and the stupid fucking Liberals will lose bigly. What you’ll see is a repeat of what happened in SA earlier this year, where a so called Liberal government will be tossed out for a more conservative Labor government.
The truth is that I’d rather have a Minns Labor government than a spineless Liberal/National government which kowtows to a sinister creep like Greenwich. Greenwich is probably in a rush to get the legislation through because he knows after March he’ll have zero power.

Russian Embassy in the United States – Comments on pipeline
(quote)
We note the attempts by some U.S. legislators to put blame on Russia for the incidents that occurred on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
Perhaps, they have a better view from the top of Capitol Hill. But if that is the case, they must also have seen the U.S. warships’ activities at the very site of the Russian infrastructure disruption just the day before. Or noticed drones and helicopters fly over there. Or observed U.S. Navy exercises with underwater explosives that have been conducted in the same area some time ago. Finally, they should have recalled the promises made by President Biden to “bring an end” to the Nord Stream 2 project.
What is obvious to us is that those who ponder about the incident seem to forget to ask the main question: who benefits from the pipelines’ rupture? The answer is on the surface. The decades-long energy trade between Moscow and Europe has long turned into an eyesore for Washington strategists. Unable to offer a decent alternative to reliable and, no less importantly, cheap supplies of gas, the U.S. decided to “squeeze out” Russia as a competitor using non-market methods and sanctions. Washington is trying hard to get its allies hooked on an expensive and environmentally unfriendly “LNG needle”.
For our part, we insist on the need for a comprehensive and objective examination of the circumstances of the unprecedented attacks on Russian pipelines. To discuss this issue, the Russian Federation will convene an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.

So it seems Australia has chosen the Mike Cannon-Brooks energy system moving forward.
‘Fossil Fuels’ are the greenest of energy sources
A 35-year veteran of the global warming debate says ‘fossil fuels’ are the “greenest” of energy sources.
In a recently published paper, Dr. Indur Goklany notes that carbon dioxide emissions from industrial activity and transportation have increased plant growth and that fertilizers and pesticides derived from ‘fossil fuels’ have boosted crop yields so that more food can be produced on less land.
“Contrary to the claims of proponents of the Green New Deal and Net Zero, ‘fossil fuels’ are the greenest fuels,” says Goklany. “First, uniquely among energy sources, ‘fossil fuel’ use emits CO2, which is the ultimate source of the elemental building block, carbon, found in all carbon-based life — virtually all life on Earth.”
Referencing several studies, Goklany reports that up to 50 percent of global vegetated areas became greener between 1982-2009 and that 70 percent of the greening has been attributed to carbon dioxide emitted by the burning of ‘fossil fuels’.
Dr. Goklany’s analysis underscores that policies forcing the replacement of ‘fossil fuels’ with solar panels and wind turbines are counterproductive, exacerbating some of the very problems attributed to global warming.

In 1988 the United Nations said the Maldives would drown within thirty years, and now ABC News says the Maldives will drown in thirty years. This video takes a closer look at the Maldives Dire Straits.
Someone forgot to tell the Maldives this, they expanding Hulhumale like nobody’s business. According to the locals they’ve basically trebled the area of the island.
Apparently there’s a ‘gas trigger’.

I’ll tell you who’s not unkind. WA radio people. They are the kindest, most reasonable people in Australia. Not a bad apple among them.

Sorry Custard, “site blocked due to Trojan” Malwarebytes.
https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2022/09/albos-cowards-lock-in-immense-energy-shock/
Today’s east coast gas price is $23Gj and the Albo’s cowards just made it entirely acceptable for the Evil Gas Cartel to make any offer to local consumers of gas up to roughly $80Gj.
That price will deliver an electricity price of roughly 600MW/h. It will constitute a gas price shock of 1000% and an electricity price shock of 1200% versus pre-Ukraine prices.
This will lift the CPI by 13% over one year and more like 20% over two with spillovers.
I have absolutely no idea how hard the Evil Gas Cartel will push this but Albo’s cowards have just given them carte blanche to do so.
I hope the good minister got the promise of a decent sinecure post-politics.

Hey Steve
You had a number of post edited at Adams.
Why?
It’s perhaps a mistake to respond to Ed Case ar 8.07, but zero probative value attaches to each of “previous allegations”, “possible drug use”, “alleged dishonesty”, and “(a question) whether evidence was contaminated”. 4 x 0 equals zero.
This sloppy (being generous) argument is however now standard. Perhaps the worst illustration was the inquiry in Dyson Heydon’s alleged misconduct. Worse that is, because the Chief Justice of the High Court authorised the extra-curial inquiry.

Watched Civilizations last night on a whim with the lil tacker. Theme was art and colour through time and trade routes. Good presentation, great shots, a few stunning progressions through visual presentations with narrative, tho Simon Schama does occasionally lapse to the Brian Cox – Rick Stein model of saying “it’s wonderful because it’s just so wonderful”, which is more acclamation than explanation. Nonetheless, a lot of good tidbits, and some genuinely surprising links and insights and factoids which I hadn’t twigged onto, for a subject that I’m pretty into. Bit of a stretch with trying to lift some Hindu folk art to the level of Titian, but still, it should have been a clue that elevating relativism, Orientalism and, most importantly, diminishing Christianity were trump cards that Schama was itching to get out of his sleeves.
So the last ten minutes…
Schama wanks on about Matisse going to Morocco, seeing the wonder of the wonderful Islamic patterns, and wonderfully wanking all over a church in Vence with wonderful repeated monsteria leaf-motifs and doodling on the tiles with faceless Steiner playgroup doll figures.
He honestly compared it, and argued that in artistic insight and execution, it was comparable to and better than, the Gothic Cathedral in Chartres.
As a sign-off, it was sunning in its infantile, anti-European, pro-Islamic elitist condescension.
I read a big book about Nostradamus when I was twelve. Fantastic stuff.

Ease up.
I was only saying that WA media people are just peachy. Very balanced. Open to new views on issues that matter to people.
I read they were out by about 100 million and began populatio decline about a decade ago. You know Rick, this has some implications for Oz if it’s true. Miners were expecting the conversion rule in China where iron ore use peaks and they begin to act like a developed nation in terms of demand to occur between 2025- 2030. Developed nations use only 25% iron ore and 75% is recycled.
I take it Civilisations is an attempt to make a more ‘inclusive’ version of Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation.
If so, it would be just another example of people with a superficial understanding of somethings being astounded by the superficial similarities to other things of which they also have superficial understanding – but convinced it is profound because the original they had not quite understood was considered profound.
They would dwell upon the parallels between Titian (described as a style of manga) and manga (as a style of Titian) and imagine they had found something deeper in both.
Who Sabotaged the Nord Stream Pipelines?
From Martin Armstrong –
“I rarely believe in coincidences. Everyone is perplexed as to why there are sudden leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea connecting Russia to Germany. The first explosion was recorded on Monday near the Danish island of Bornholm. The second blast happened later that evening and was so powerful that scientists equate it to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.
Numerous people are claiming that Russia sabotaged the pipeline, but numerous clues indicate someone else was at play. Radek Sikorski, Poland’s former minister of national defense and EU Parliament member, posted an image of the leak with the caption, “Thank you, USA.”
The USA is certainly no stranger to targeting Russian pipelines. In January 1982, Ronald Regan and the CIA planned to destroy the Soviet Union’s economy by using the technology available at the time to create a massive explosion. The US wanted to block Europe from importing Soviet Western gas amid the Cold War and was willing to take extreme measures. Thomas C. Reed, a former Air Force secretary who served in the National Security Council, wrote a book entitled “At the Abysss: An Insider’s History of the Cold War.”
“In order to disrupt the Soviet gas supply, its hard currency earnings from the West, and the internal Russian economy, the pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines, and valves was programmed to go haywire, after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds,” Reed writes. According to the Washington Post, Reed later commented that it was the “most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space.”
What about other nations in Europe? No one is claiming responsibility, but they are stating that it was a deliberate act of terrorism. “It is the authorities’ clear assessment that these are deliberate actions -– not accidents,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Tuesday. Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said, “it is probably a case of sabotage,” and they are not ruling out any scenarios. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also called it “an act of sabotage.” “The era of Russian domination in the gas sphere is coming to an end,” Morawiecki declared. “An era that was marked by blackmail, threats and extortion.”
The United States is also claiming to be perplexed by the issue. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said she would not “speculate on the cause.” US President Joe Biden hinted at the cause in February 2022. In the video above, Biden tells reporters that if Russia invades, “then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.” When a reporter asked just how the US would complete the task, Biden ominously said. “Trust me, we will do it.”
This was clearly an act of sabotage, but who was the culprit? The West is pointing to Russia, while Russia is pointing to the West. Something does not add up.”

This wealthy couple are employing a housemaid.
She decides to ask for a raise. She goes to the lady and asks “Ma’am, I’d like a raise”. The lady responds “A raise? But why on earth? I see no reason why”. The housemaid says “Well, for starters, I cook better than you, ma’am”.
The lady gets annoyed and replies “Where does that come from?” “Well, Ma’am, your husband told me he likes the food better when I make it than when you do”.
Seriously annoyed, the lady interjects “I’m not giving you a raise. That’s just your job”.
The housemaid tries again “And I’m sorry ma’am, but I’m also better at laundry than you”. “Nonsense. What makes you think that?” “Again, I’m sorry ma’am, but your husband says, his shirts are better ironed when I’m the one who cleaned them, than when you are”.
Even more annoyed, the lady says “Okay I’ll have a talk with him. But you’re still not getting a raise for doing your job”.
“Well… I’m very sorry ma’am, but maybe you should also consider the fact that I’m better at sex than you”.
The lady responds, red with anger “EXCUSE ME? My HUSBAND told you that?” The housemaid answers “Oh, no. The gardener, ma’am…”
