China could conceivably stabilise at some point with increased domestic consumption, although no Asian economy has really managed to do that to any great extent.. What it would not do would hold out the promise of rising living standards for the hundreds of millions needed to prevent political instability.

If Peter Zeihan is right, China is done and dusted. He reckons the age pyramid turned about a decade ago, and the population was over-estimated by about 200 million plus. I hope so. Maricopa County ran a terrible election day vote. I don’t believe these tabulator errors occured during early voting in-person so it’s curious that they occur when R turnout is strongest. Also, the judge requiring that the problems needed to both intentional and determinate is his own invention. The law only requires that the problems or errors cast the election in doubt; in doubt indicates a balance of probabilities standard.
On US Coke, can confirm that it is high fructose syrup and thus crap. Always buy the Mexican Coke which is in a 250ml? glass bottle which uses sugar and tastes delicious.

Mexican Coke, like Oz Coke, is made with Cane sugar. The only place in the US that makes Coke with Cane sugar is Dublin, Georgia. The US also forbids them from selling Dublin Coke outside the State. A lot of Dublin Coke runs are organised just like the moonshine runs over County lines. LOL! True story people. Look it up for yourselves.
Funnier still is the labelling of sugar. Here in Oz, sugar is sugar. In the States, because of the preponderance of Corn Syrup and Beet sugar, sugar from Sugar Cane has to be labelled as “Cane” sugar.
Baked goods made with Cane sugar sell for premium prices.
If you need to know how I know this stuff without ever having set foot in the US, I am a baker, it is my job to know these things.

Rabz,
Corn Syrup is the US version of Glucose. If you have ever tasted it, it is almost tasteless. To use Corn Syrup means having to add a phenomenal amount to make any product sweet. If using Cane sugar, you only need to add about one quarter or less to achieve the same sweetness. The taste difference though is huge.
The use of Corn syrup to sweeten everything is because growing Corn is heavily subsidised in the US. The only Cane grown in the States is in Hawaii. So, not cost effective.
If you buy a bag of what we call granulated sugar in the US, unless stated otherwise, it is made from corn and/or sugar beet. Awful stuff.
Always found woolies a very unpleasant company to deal with. Coles not too bad.
I think I’ve been quite generous to those living in “other” States. Some of us still pine for the good old days when the border actually meant something. Make the codpiece great again.
When I use an American recipe for any baked good, I have to halve the amount of sugar used unless it specifically asks for the use of Cane sugar. The same goes with any of their preserving recipes. Jams and pickles in US recipes use more than twice the amount of sugar as you would use in an Australian recipe.
I like all the states. The territories especially the ACT I despise. Tasmania got invaded by kooks from the mainland unfortunately.

Correct. Also, the use of corn syrup has been a huge factor in rise of obesity in the US over the last fifty years. Remember, corn syrup isn’t just used in “sweet things”, it’s also used in almost all refined food production in the US.

No wonder I couldn’t stand the taste of slice bread in the US, it was so sickeningly sweet. Crusty rolls weren’t too bad.
No kidding, I’ve never tasted better bread than this place, which is near our apartment. Someone told me it’s Israeli.
The times we’ve visited the US (west of the Mississippi only – old US pal said I wasn’t missing anything to the east) bread was a sickly sweet, mainly air filled disaster. I’m a fan of German black bread.

Bread in NYC certainly depends on where you live and the quality of the establishment. In my former neighbourhood, which was largely Dominicanbut in the middle of gentrifying, the local bakery produced this terrible stuff with a yellow complexion that was either cornbread or similar. But if you went to a good cafe or restaurant you were given lovely French or Italian bread that was delicious. To find a bakery that produced the latter you had to travel to more salubrious neighbourhoods on the upper east and west.

Shinerwatra’s daughter has a policy to raise the minimum wage from 300 baht to 600 baht a day. Which would pretty well much destroy the predominantly family oriented farms and small business here.
My prediction is if she wins there will be another military takeover before she goes full term. Both the monarchy and military here despise the Shinerwatra family.

Peace and stability can’t be achieved in their own countries, but apparently if we transport them to a different country and throw innumerous additional cultural differences and languages into the mix, we can apparently make it work…it’ll be just tickity-boo.

Boiling vegetables to death seemed to be pretty common back in the day.
Johanna,
teen years lived on cola, kit kats and ciggies. Twenties, Berroca, coffee and ciggies. Thirties, had a child and straightened up and cooked healthy but tasty food.
Gabor, you are right. I remember Kurds being referred to as communists by our media about 40 years ago or thereabouts. Weren’t they supported by the Soviets before the collapse?
Diversity at the restaurant is fine, diversity of an entire culture leads to the above. Culture is the ‘operating system’ of your country. More than one OS creates conflict, incompatibility, friction and violence.
Think of the ‘road rules’ example – one set of road rules and everyone knows what the next person is likely to do. Multiple sets of road rules leads to confusion, ‘accidents’ and injuries.
Can I hear the sound of a thousand Berrocas fizzing?
Naah – that never worked. Boxing Day is “Hair of the Dog Day”.
Top up from yesterday and be ready for the first ball at 11:00 then the gun for the start of the race.
It’s compulsory.
No. He’s just not very bright.
The reason a million TVs are switched to another channel after Tucker Carlson is finished is to avoid Sean Hannity’s boring, monotonous schoolmarm lecture, the primary objective of which is counter-propaganda against de facto state media — CNN, CSNBC, New York Times, Washington Post.
Yesterdays tasks completed:
1) BBQ and prawns …not that European snow food – not in 35C
2) Sensible gifts for close family members
3) Catch up last 3 episodes of Yellowstone with the above (I forced my daughter to admit they obviously modelled John Dutton after me).
4) String 200m of fencing a decent interval after the above.
5) (after dark) finally ping that rabbit at 60m with a 22 headshot
🙂
Yes, Pogria. Weight for weight, and sometimes a little less sugar if the fruit is very ripe and sweet. If the natural pectin isn’t there, you can always use soaked seeds or…Jamsetta.
There. I’ve now lost all my cooking cred.
Sadly, I have not watched Tucker since he so cravenly rolled over and accepted the steal on election night…… once trust is lost….
This one, rosie:
Clicked on the link and hit a paywall.
Reading back, I agree with those who found US mass produced bread inedible, because it is so sweet. Mcdonalds burger buns used to be similar (haven’t eaten one for years, so may have changed.) A lot of US food is loaded with unnecessary calories which, to an outsider, do not improve the taste. Things like peanut butter, the aforementioned bread, and even bacon is sometimes drowned in maple syrup. No wonder they are so fat.
When I was there, Jewish delis were my go-to for lunch especially – delicious sandwiches on rye or other unsweetened breads. As for the desserts, on the rare occasions when I ordered one, I could never finish it. They were humongous.
A lot of Americans eat a huge amount of sugar as part of their normal diet. I’m not getting into the varieties of sugar debate here, because it all gets turned into glucose in the body. Nor do I think that it is toxic. But, it represents a gazillion calories a year for no good purpose.
Good shooting, duk. I loathe rabbits only slightly more than the marauding water hens. Can’t shoot anything here…all protected. Also, I wouldn’t want to wing the neighbour while he’s weeding the border.
You’re making me salivate.

OK, see that you posted a good chunk of the article – which is interesting – above. Thanks.
I wonder if energy costs are affecting the recycling costs? Recycling glass requires a lot of energy, so usually the economics do not stack up.

Son and DiL expecting baby in April. The responsibility seems to have kicked in already. They were left leaning especially as DiL is Uni lecturer. Son was relating a problem with one of his 230 staff. The problem being solved by doing everything by the book and then telling them being woke is not a reason not to do your job and if you continue to not do your job we will cease paying you. They have also discovered that being Anglo’s doesn’t mean you are responsible for the ills of the world. DiL has found she is rascist because she requires submitted work to be in English and the person can write competently. This from someone of mixed perentage and born here. This time last year she would have been holding their hand sympathising with them. Maybe its just an age related thing but the change happened as soon as parenthood was on the horizon.
The issue with glass is it needs gas heating. So recycling is competing with electricity generation.
Meanwhile “lock the gate” is increasing, so less gas supply. Which is going to get even worse because of Albo’s price cap.
It was interesting to see one wine brand switching to polycarbonate bottles. I wasn’t going to buy them because they say “Saving the Planet” on them, and anyway that wine was fairly ordinary.
Indolent, a couple of months ago I walked into Aldi at Greenwich (UK) and was greeted with exactly the same thing. I could not shop unless I had the App on my phone.
Walked straight out again and into Sainsburys.
This is where it’s heading. I can see the big chains here adopting this within the next couple of years like the abysmal self-checkout model.
I’m curious regarding this attempted transition to QR everything…
Does that mean if you ‘forget’ your phone, or it runs out of charge, that shopping will be denied?
Also, if currency goes digital, how to people conduct transactions during a sustained power outage.??
The Once Upon A Time respected British Medical Journal publishes a paper based on survey results garnered from 4chan and reddit users.
I wonder if anyone at the BMJ considered the likelihood of being trolled.
Correct. That was my experience.
I objected and was greeted with Smirks and Dirty Looks from the gilded youths (denizens of the nearby university).
B/s talked so the money walked.
This one is more speculative because of assumed underreporting, but have a look at it in conjunction with the Haiti link I posted last night.
Experts estimate 20 million are already dead due to COVID Vaccination & over 2 billion injured
Not only did Haiti (not the most hygienic place in the world) not suffer much from Covid, but it avoided all the risks associated with the “vaccines”. Some mathematical genius could extrapolate figures from that, based on population comparisons.
It’s exactly as we said, Covid was pretty much a nothing burger. It was the mind games and deliberate fear campaigns which caused the death and destruction through homicidal treatment protocols and forced medical experimentation on whole populations. Not to mention all the mental, physical and economic harm caused by lockdowns and associated oppression.
How many of these did we see before the past couple of years? Once a year? Twice? Certainly not on a daily basis.

Almost all of the stories posted since are either ‘lifestyle’ items that have been warehoused, or copies/rewrites from external sources. With its $1.2 bn budget, they have given 99% of the staff a few days off – or is it a ‘well-earned break.’
If (please, no) a major disaster occurred or war broke out, there would be a couple of work experience kids and a hung over ‘journalist’ on deck to cover it.

Boxing Day morning fun.
Handle fell off the roll tarp on the mother bin at 7.30. The shaft for the handle was never seated deep enough into the alloy pipe that wraps the tarp and the bolt ripped through the end of the tube.
Grind back the land on the stub shaft and then drill and grind out a longer recess for the locking groove in the pipe.
Back on the bin and loading the truck. Me very sweaty for so early.

The Dumpter Fire Omnibus Bill Goes From Bad to Worse in Mind-Numbing Ways
Two guys grow up together but after college one moves to NY, the other to California. Every ten years they agree to meet in Palm Springs and play golf for a weekend. They finish their round at age 30 and go to lunch…
“Where you wanna go?” “Hooters”. “Why?” “Well, you know, they got the broads, with the big racks, and the tight shorts. The legs…” “OK”.
Ten years later at 40 they play…
“Where you wanna go?” “Hooters”. “Why?” “Well, you know, they got cold beer and the big screen TVs and everybody has a little action on the games”. “OK”.
Ten years later at 50…
“Where you wanna go?” “Hooters”. “Why?” “The food is good and there is plenty of parking”. “OK”.
At 60…
“Where you wanna go?” “Hooters”. “Why?” “Wings are half price”. “OK”.
At 70…
“Where you wanna go?” “Hooters”. “Why?” “They have 6 handicapped spaces right by the door”. “OK”.
And 80…
“Where you wanna go?” “Hooters”. “Why?” “We’ve never been there before”.
