eating their own

Taught a jaundiced shoddy view of history and then surprised when the students out-jaundice and out-shod him.

Had the course been grounded on fact and rigour then the professor would have the advantage. But instead he is faced with students whose capacity for paranoia and grievance far exceeds his own. Now, for example, how could he hope to explain his figments as justifiable but theirs as paranoia without resorting to facts and logic – things he will not have much experience with and his woke students have been taught to view with hostility and with suspicion: it is a tool of oppressive whiteness.

Then he lists all his black creds, right down to the Afrocentric school he sends his daughters to. (I cannot see how sending his kids to a school founded on ‘us/them’ will be healthy. And even worse, one of ghastly places where people who have been in America for generations with no connection to the Dark Continent pretend they are through some magic culturally and spiritually Africans.)

This professor, I think, lacks the brave mind that can look at him and his students and see they are both wrong, which very act would open him up to other possibilities. Instead he will remained convinced he is right but be unable to convince anyone else.

“‘Mentally challenged’ could als have been added Cassie. What is going on in the heads of people that employ the likes of Rugg? Same as Tony giving Spot Destroyer a gig. Do they think it gives them some cred with the Left loonies or no idea. No guessing what I think.”

Actually, the real question should “what went on in the heads of those people who voted for the likes of Lard-Arse Ryan”? Ryan was always a fraud. I’m going to be a little harsh here and say that the only people who were and are “mentally challenged” are the wealthy fools in Australia’s richest electorates who voted for Ryan and her Teal comrades last May. I know, I know, I’m being mean but it’s the truth and it’s time for some good old fashioned truth-telling. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence, nous and common sense could see that the Teals, and in particular Lard-Arse Ryan of Kooyong and her ex-ABC Marxist comrade in neighbouring Goldstein (the same one who said that Trump’s decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem was because he was doing the bidding of his rich Jewish donors), were and are frauds but they are also something more sinister, I regard both women are dangerous. All the Teals campaigned on the lie that they were ‘fiscally conservative and socially progressive’. But Ryan and Daniel’s voting record proves they aren’t “fiscally conservative”. Ryan wants the stage 3 tax cuts scrapped. And both women supported Labor’s industrial relations changes, Daniel only backflipped afterwards because of the blowback from businesses in Goldstein, yet no doubt some of those same business proprietors fell for the Teal hype and voted for Daniel last May. To them I say, suck it up, you reap what you sow. Last May you vomited up these ghastly creatures, and I’ll rub your faces in it.

Musk Advisor David Sacks States Elon Musk Had “No Idea” the Level of Government Control and Influence Over Twitter Platform Prior to Purchase

In a just world the SEC would go after the Twitter owners and executives who failed to disclose such market moving information. The fine would be enormous and would open the door for Elon to sue for compensation.

Unfortunately SEC is part of the fascist swamp along with all the other alphabet agencies, so it won’t happen. But if you forget to list a tip on your tax return the IRS will be all over you.

let’s start with a simple claim that a lot of people seem not to understand:
vaccines are not magic.

they cannot do or elicit that which your body cannot do.

they do not kill or stop or even affect viruses.

all vaccines do is train your immune system to recognize a pathogen and learn a response to prevent it from infecting you.

you store the information on how to make antibodies and how to trigger T-cells etc.

but ALL the vaccines that really do stop you from contracting and spreading diseases have one thing in common:

they work on a “one and done” virus that does not mutate.

measles, smallpox, chicken pox, mumps, rubella, these are all diseases where you get them once and (barring extreme immune suppression or rare malfunction) you never get them again.

this is the realm of plausible vaccine candidates.

a vaccine cannot teach you to do something that you could not otherwise do. it’s just intended to be a safer way to do this that can teach you to resist infection without running the risk of getting infected. we can argue about how good at this which ones are, but it does not change a bigger point:

if your body could not, all by itself, get a disease, recover from it, then never get it again due to acquired immunity, the idea that a vaccine using any currently known modality can allow you to do so is deeply implausible, probably impossible.

there has never been a successful vaccine for a recurrent respiratory disease. not for flu, coronaviruses, RSV, none of it. these viruses mutate too quickly. there is always a new one, a new strain, and it will infect you whether or not you got sick last year.

sometimes, getting sick last year (or some other year) actually makes you MORE likely to get sick. this is OAS/hoskins effect/immune imprinting. you body misidentifies a pathogen and produces the antibodies for a past one in response to it and in some cases, this leads to the new one actually being vaccine advantaged. you’re flooding the zone with a response that doesn’t work and it prevents you from finding one that does.

it has long been studied in flu.

Got 3 more years of this shit. Hun:

Victorian prisoners have been granted a higher percentage pay rise in the past year than some of the state’s health and aged care workers, teachers and even the guards who keep them locked up.

Thousands of inmates behind bars across the state’s jails were given a four per cent wage rise on January 4, it can be revealed.

The pay bump, granted to even some of the state’s most evil criminals housed at maximum security Port Phillip prison, comes as taxpayers battle an ongoing cost of living crisis.

At least 1400 prisoners, classified on a ‘level one’ salary, will receive an annual wage of $2444, up $117 per year — their first increase since April 28, 2015.

Inmate pay packets are well below the weekly $812.60 minimum wage, but prisoners do not have day-to-day living expenses such as rent, electricity, rates or transport.

Income is used for discretionary items such as snacks, cigarettes, phone calls as well as saving for their departure from custody.

Since June 1, 2022, Victorian prison guards have been granted a 2.5 per cent pay increase.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said: “Comparing prisoner pay rate increases to those of teachers, prison officers and healthcare workers is misleading. To assert prisoners have received a higher pay increase than those professions over the same time period is wrong.”

They added: “Providing prisoners with the opportunity to work and earn money allows them to purchase basic canteen items, such as toiletries and telephone credit. Teaching prisoners to save and budget also helps provide them with skills for rehabilitation and reintegration into the community which ultimately helps enhance community safety for all Victorians.”

Brett Collins, co-ordinator of prisoner advocacy organisation Justice Action, said it was only fair wages increased.

“It is great the needs for fairness to cover costs is recognised in Victoria,” Mr Collins said.

“It encourages prisoners to get back into the workforce and be paid for their efforts.”

It can also be revealed more than $370,000 a year is being spent on Victorian prisoners who qualify for sick leave.

Prisoners who prove they are physically or mentally ill for more than four weeks qualify for the weekly $30.00 payment.

As of June 30, 2022, 51 men and women in public jails, including maximum security Barwon Prison, met “long term illness” qualifications.

On the same date there were 112 prisoners at Ravenhall, 70 at Port Phillip and 10 at Fulham correctional centre receiving the payment.

Victims of crime advocate John Herron said it was “again a case of inmates running the house”. (Or from Spring St)

“Over the past few years, inmates have already been rewarded with sentencing discounts in lieu of Covid,” Mr Herron said.

“They are reducing time for the incarcerated who are now rewarded for their horrific crimes with a pay increase.

“This is on top of an already lenient justice system.”

Shadow Corrections Minister Brad Battin said: “The government have their priorities totally wrong when they gift prisoners who are already getting free care, three meals a day and medical support, a four per cent pay rise.”

He added: “The government needs to explain why inmates are receiving hundreds of thousands in sick payments while Victoria continues to run one of the lowest funded public health systems in the nation.”

Perhaps someone can ask Minns and Parrothead about this…

“NSW state election: Vaucluse candidates discuss gay conversion therapy legislation

A Vaucluse state election panel – conducted by the Anglican Church – saw candidates pressed to share their position on gay conversion therapy legislation. See where they stand.

Candidates vying for the seat of Vaucluse were wedged on their stance on gay conversion therapy legislation at an Anglican Church-organised panel Thursday night – hours before an independent MP introduced a bill aiming the banish the practice in NSW.

Reverend Doctor Michael Jensen, Minister at St Mark’s Anglican Church in up-market Darling Point pushed candidates on a contentious detail of Victoria’s recently passed legislation which made it a criminal offence an individual to carry out gay conversion therapy.

This includes religious, or prayer-based, practices.

Gay conversion therapy, also known as change or suppression practices seek, to change or hide an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, and can include teachings, counselling, spiritual care activities, or other psychological or medical interventions.

The Victorian Bill states actions which supports or affirms a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation and positively assists and affirms the person is not considered a change or suppression practice.

Rev Dr Jensen told the panel if the Victorian legislation was adopted in NSW, he believed it would be illegal for “a person like me to give religious counsel or even pray with someone struggling with their sexuality or gender identity”.

Liberal candidate Kellie Sloane, Labor candidate Margaret Merton, Greens candidate Dominic WY Kanak, and independent candidate Karen Freyer appeared at the panel convened by the Anglican parish.

The Minister pressured the candidates on whether they would oppose legislation that prevented the exercise of religious activities with consent.

Liberal candidate Kellie Sloane said she believed the prayer component of the bill was “open to interpretation” but stressed none of the candidates had not seen the details of the New South Wales legislation.

“It’s important we … protect individuals from harm,” she said, but supported the ability of the church to counsel people who consented to the support of responsible individuals in private and safe situations.

“I do wish to say that someone who is struggling with their sexual identity, who identifies differently … they’re not broken and they don’t need fixing,” she said.

Labor candidate Margaret Merton reiterated the Labour Party’s commitment to establishing a NSW Faith Affairs Council to “ensure that all religious faiths have a voice at the table and an opportunity to put forward their issues for fair consideration”.

Ms Merton rejected the idea the law should intervene in individuals ability to engage in private practices such as prayer.

“If two people agree or ask to pray together, I don’t understand how that could be at all problematic.”

Independent candidate Karen Freyer told the panel she had “an issue” with the question’s assumption. “We don’t need to pray for you,” she said.

Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich on Friday announced he had drafted the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2023, which will bring NSW in line with Victoria, Queensland and the ACT where the practice has been outlawed.

Multiculturalism and Seniors Minister Mark Coure tweeted Friday morning in support of the bill.

“I absolutely stand by @AlexGreenwich on this issue. It is time this appalling practice is cast out of our society,” Mr Coure tweeted.

Queensland banned gay conversion therapy in August 2020.

Victoria passed its Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill in 2021.

The reforms state anyone found trying to suppress or change another person’s sexuality or gender identity faces up to 10 years’ jail or fines of almost $10,000 if it can be proved their actions caused serious injury and gave the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission more powers to deal with complaints.

Mr Greenwich has warned his support in a minority government would be contingent on backing for his bill, if Labor or the Coalition fail to win enough seats to govern with a majority.

On Saturday, NSW Labor leader Chris Minns promised to ban gay conversion therapy if elected next month”

A few points…

1. Labor will win next month and I hope they win an outright majority so they don’t have to rely on Greenwich. Greenwich has been pulling the strings over this state Liberal government since 2019. He was behind the push for the outrageous 2019 abortion law and is pushing euthanasia. I could say a lot of things about “Alex Greenwich”, but I won’t jeopardise this blog legally.

2. If you want to know what’s currently wrong with the NSW Liberal party, the Liberals federally and the Liberals in every state of this country, and why the Liberals are effed permanently, look no further than, “Multiculturalism and Seniors Minister Mark Coure”. It appears Mr Coure thinks prayer is “an appalling practice that must be cast out of our society”. Well, it’s time to cast the Liberals out of our society, permanently.

Some initial voting in Western Sydney shows One Nation is polling well, very well. Whilst they won’t win in the lower house, I hope they win bigly in the upper house. In March, I’ll be doing a donkey vote in the lower house but in the upper house, I’ll be voting for One Nation.

The following is an extract of an ABC News on-line article posted today.

During a heated assembly debate on Thursday, Chief Minister Andrew Barr categorised cost of living as an issue of “inequality in society” that required “a redistribution of wealth”.

“What that means in practice is we need to take millions and millions of dollars away from the wealthiest Canberrans, and transfer them through concession programs to the poorest Canberrans,” he said.

Throughout the week, Mr Barr pointed to 65 government programs he said were doing just that.

The batting side picked wasn’t too bad, apart from Khawaja, Davey, and Head, the mistake was to load the captaincy onto Cummins and send Lyon and Murphy.
Those 2 went for 253 runs, the Aussies only made 268 runs off 20 wickets.

Someone might be able to help me here- if I retire early and cash in my super, the canbra pubes help themselves to 30% – is that correct?

Actually, not in most cases.
It’s complicated*, and you need to define “retire early”. You can retire over 60 but below pension age tax free.
If not, you might be taxed at 15% if your fund is a “taxed fund” or it might be 30% if your fund is “untaxed” (usually public sector defined benefit funds).
You might also be able to take the first $200k-ish tax free.
If you are within a year or two of tax-free access another option might be to borrow to tide you over. The only cost would be the differential between borrowing costs and super earnings on funds left in, which would be way cheaper than withdrawing and paying tax.
Anyone aged over, say, 58 who cops full whack tax on withdrawals has been poorly advised and/or isn’t very canny.
….
* No nitpicking. I have tried to condense pages of tax rules into a couple of paragraphs.

U.S. Only Recently Developed Secret Balloon Tracking Tech, Explaining Why Trump Had No Idea Flights Occurred During His Tenure

The US intelligence community developed a secret technology to track China’s fleet of surveillance balloons only in the last year, according to insiders who spoke with CNN.

Although they won’t say how we’re doing it, the sources claim that the US can now even track past balloon flights—which is why the news only recently came out that the lighter-than-air craft crossed American airspace during the Trump administration. Like a scene out of “Back to the Future,” the Pentagon only recently realized that these intrusions had occurred.

Despite the Biden administration’s insinuation that somehow Trump knew about these flights and did nothing about them, the truth is that our intel community did not know about them at the time, and so could not have informed the former president.

‘Don’t make the same mistake’: Linda Burney sends Indigenous voice warning to Peter Dutton

By Paige Taylor
Indigenous Affairs Correspondent, WA Bureau Chief

Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney is using the anniversary of the Stolen Generations apology to send a message to Peter Dutton: “Do not make the same mistake again”.

Ms Burney does not name the Opposition Leader in her speech to be delivered on the eve of the 15th anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s historic apology to Indigenous Australians removed from their families under past policies. However, it is clear that she intends to appeal directly to Mr Dutton to grasp the opportunity to support the Indigenous voice.

Mr Dutton last year expressed regret that he was among MPs who boycotted Mr Rudd’s 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations in parliament. “I understand the symbolism and I made a mistake,” Mr Dutton said after he became opposition leader in May last year.

In a speech Ms Burney is due to give at the Healing Foundation in Canberra on Sunday, she is due to say: “It’s easy to say the apology didn’t fix everything.”

“The apology was about healing a deep wound,” Ms Burney is expected to say in her speech on Sunday.

“The closing of a painful chapter of denial in our history.

“And the opening of a new chapter in our collective story, a better chapter.

“It was about people. Real people … It was the truth.

“We can never underestimate the power of that.”

Ms Burney is expected to say the apology was the catalyst for important practical change including the Closing the Gap targets that finally began to measure the progress – and lack of progress – in reducing Indigenous disadvantage.

“And importantly, it kindled hope for the next steps on the road to true reconciliation expressed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart,” Ms Burney will say.

“I know that some people who boycotted that historic day in 2008 have since expressed their regret.

“They now admit that it was a mistake.

“Don’t make the same mistake again.

“When a generous and gracious hand is outstretched – in partnership – it should be grasped.

“To do anything else would be to repeat the mistakes of the past.”

Did Krudd’s apology actually achieve anything?

White House Confirms They Shot Down Another “High-Altitude Spy Object” Over Alaska

February 10, 2023 – Sundance – 508 Comments

From the Comments

– It appears that Biden now has proven that he can be humiliated with little or no effort. The Chinese will launch hundreds of two hundred dollar balloons and we will shoot them down with $600,000 air to air missiles.

– Or Russia or private citizens having fun trying to embarrass and punk Slow Joe
Or……

– The fertile mind of Franz Kafka couldn’t have dreamed up the pathetic corpse of America today. After killing American industry and jobs, while building up the power of a dangerous enemy, China, American Crony Capitalists and their embarrassing, pathetic Political shellmen have “discovered” Chinese balloons flying over U.S. airspace.

And they claim this is a new and unpredictable development.

Amazing. Maybe they will discover all the Chinese Satellites flying over U.S. Satellites built from American technology. Perhaps they might find the Chinese Spy Network infiltrated into Universities, Government Agencies and all the Technology Labs and Corporations. A network of at least a 100,ooo, likely more than a million eyeballs.

– These people are so incompetent they are going to wind up shooting down an American passenger plane.

– I suppose another weather balloon is a good distraction from intentional witholding Earthquake emergency aid from Syria under premise of sanctions and illegally occupying one third of Syria (the part where the oil is coincidentally) so their oil can be stolen.

It’s not a very good one though.

– I don’t know if it is true, but I read this balloon was actually an errant weather balloon. What an idiot our fake President is.

There’s been nothing gracious or generous from the Labor Government on this issue.
For a start, they refused to fund the No case.
They refused to inform voters of the issues.
They refused to say what was in the Legislation.
Now they say there is no Legislation, the Referendum must be passed first.
Now Linda Burney is trying emotional blackmail.

The reality is that Peter Dutton has held the Labor Government to account, kept his troops in line and kept his options open.

Jeremy Clarkson Fans Launch Attack On Council After “Disgraceful Behaviour” At Clarkson’s Farm

February 11, 2023

The second series of Clarkson’s Farm was released yesterday and fans have flocked to the show (excuse the pun). But after catching up on how the council has, for want of a better word, sabotaged Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm, viewers have launched an attack on the local council.

It’s been no secret that the West Oxfordshire District Council has put a stop to almost every one of the Grand Tour host-turned-farmer’s plans over the last couple of years. This includes his restaurant, his farm shop, and any other development he attempted to do to the land he owns.

With profits being so low across the board for farmers, the only way these hard-working people can make a living is to diversify their revenue. This means building new ways of making money such as new crops, different animals, or starting a farm shop or restaurant. Season 2 of the show saw Clarkson doing just this, and almost everything he attempted was thwarted by the council in what has been described as a witch hunt.

Hundreds of fans took to Twitter to voice their anger:

– “Watching Clarkson’s Farm 2 and I cannot believe the disgraceful behaviour of the council. What happens to the AONB when all the farmers have to sell up? You need to go away and have a word with yourselves,” one viewer posted to Twitter.

– “I thought Sri Lankan politicians were stupid. But after I watched Clarkson’s Farm, the British Council men are the same bunch of orangutans as they’re in SL.”

– “I think there genuinely needs to be an investigation into the practices of the West Oxfordshire District Council Planning cartel. Shameful, disgusting and just downright wrong behaviour.”

Here are some of the best tweets we’ve found that are standing up against the council:

– @JeremyClarkson loving season 2 of Clarkson’s Farm so far but I’m honestly appalled by the short-sightedness of West Oxfordshire District Council. I can only imagine how infuriating it must be for you and your fellow farmers. I wish you all luck for the future.

– @JeremyClarkson Just finished watching Clarkson’s Farm 2. Loved every second of it. Let’s just hope you win against the stupid idiotic council.

The Grand Tour
Jeremy Clarkson Viewers Given Warning After Release of Clarkson’s Farm

Clarkson’s Farm, the hit television show that follows Jeremy Clarkson as he attempts to run a successful farm, is quickly becoming a popular fixture of British entertainment. However, with the release of the highly anticipated second season, viewers of the Prime Video show are being issued a warning.

The West Oxfordshire County Council has come under huge amounts of fire after the release of the second series, but in a preemptive attempt to hinder the traffic and parking around Jeremy’s Diddly Squat Farm, they issued a warning, asking fans to park “safely and considerately”.

Oxfordshire County Council
@OxfordshireCC

If you’re visiting Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm Shop in Chadlington from tomorrow, please park safely and considerately.

Don’t park on the A361. It’s just too dangerous.

And please avoid parking on the verges of the narrow Chipping Norton Road as it causes damage

Unbelievably, this is the same council that denied planning permission to Jeremy Clarkson’s plan for a car park that would allow fans of the show to park off the road in a safe and organised fashion.

Twitter users were quick to point this out:

– “Feels like a car park would be a great idea! No? Oh wait…” one user says sarcastically.

– Another added: “Well, why don’t you approve the car park that @JeremyClarkson has applied for many times? It is a very sensible measure that will help the many tourists that come from all over the UK to visit the farm & this will also provide an economic boost to the area.”

– A third also joked: “I suppose tweeting warnings is better than letting him build a visitor car park. You go WODC – you’ve got this!”

With the release of the second season, it seems unlikely that parking won’t be an issue just like after the release of the first season. It does however seem likely that the council will issue complaints about the resulting mess. So hang on in there Clarkson, things may only get worse from here… for now.

The Grand Tour
Jeremy Clarkson Praised as Clarkson’s Farm Season 2 Launches Despite Recent Controversy

Despite being criticized for writing a controversial column about the Duchess of Sussex, Jeremy Clarkson has found trust from an audience in the farming community.

A government minister, Mark Spencer of Defra, publicly endorsed Clarkson’s efforts to turn his 1,000-acre property in Oxfordshire into a profitable farm ahead of the release of Clarkson’s Farm Season 2

The second season of Clarkson’s Farm, which showcases the challenges of Diddly Squat Farm, is set to air on Friday, with many farmers eagerly anticipating the show.

Andrew Loftus, from Loftus Farms in North Yorkshire, praised the show, despite Clarkson’s polarizing reputation, saying he and his family thoroughly enjoyed watching every episode.

“Clarkson is very divisive figure and that can flavour people’s opinions of the show, but I’ve watched every episode with my family and loved it,” he said.

“Clearly he hams it up for laughs, but his frustration with officialdom will chime with many farmers, while Kaleb’s (Cooper, Clarkson’s farming assistant) dry humour and simple love of country life warms the heart.”

George Beach, managing director of Mudwalls Farm in Redditch, also expressed support for the show, citing its ability to shed light on the difficulties and risks faced by farmers:

“I think it is absolutely good for farmers indeed.

“From the last series I can only comment of course. It was a real eye opener for many and quite honestly brought a few home truths about the hard work it is to be a farmer and for very little reward and lots of risks too.”

Rob Rose of Rosewood Farm in York views the series as providing a much-needed perspective on the future of the farming industry, though he believes that more is needed than just celebrity endorsement:

“The novice eye view format of Clarkson’s Farm is just what the industry needs in these times of uncertainty over it’s future direction.

“Jeremy’s rather simplistic approach to farming is an impression that many people share and seeing him get bogged down in the complexity and difficult of the business, even with expert advice, communicates the reality rather well.

“Making a good show about farming does not make him a farming ambassador, however, as farming needs much more than brash celebrity endorsement.”

During a Farmers Weekly event, Minister Spencer was asked about Clarkson’s role as an ambassador for British farming.

He stated that Clarkson has reached a consumer group that Defra and the National Farmers Union have not been able to, making him a positive influence. However, Spencer made it clear that these were his personal views and not those of Defra:

“He’s been a huge and very positive influence on that generation of consumers that we can’t get to, that the NFU (National Farmers Union) can’t get to and Defra can’t get to, so credit to him.

“He has his own controversial style but has reached people we’ve been unable to reach, and I think on balance that’s a good thing.”

The second part of the statement negates the first. Incoherent. If they’re struggling then there has to be an element of brokenness.

If someone is struggling and asks for help, then a Christian is bound to help them. The least harmful “help” is not advice, or lining up a string of therapists…other people can do that easily. It’s sitting down with that person and praying quietly with them. That’s why the person came to them in the first place.

I suppose the politician who said this imagines the Christian dramatically calling down lightning bolts from heaven or some such.

This is not a simple battle between good and evil: The longer we avoid peace talks in Ukraine the closer we come to Armageddon, writes PETER HITCHENShttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11740329/The-longer-avoid-peace-talks-Ukraine-closer-come-Armageddon-writes-PETER-HITCHENS.html

We hate and despise Vladimir Putin’s invasion precisely because it has brought death, misery, flight and atrocities to innocent people. Why then, a year afterwards, do so many people seem to be so keen on making the Ukraine war deeper and longer?

If they hate war, surely they want it to stop? There are no nice wars. The more fighting there is, the more blood and screams and tragedy there will be.

But I cannot think of a war in modern times in which so little effort has been made to bring about peace.

I think this is because so many people have come to see the war as a simple battle between good and evil. President Zelensky of Ukraine is like the white wizard Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings. And President Putin of Russia is like the Dark Lord, Sauron. This leads them to think that nothing their side does can be mistaken and that the other side has no case at all.

Actually, I think Mr Zelensky has borne himself very well in this battle and Putin has borne himself very badly. But I can’t share this simple view of the conflict and I suggest you do not do so either.

I have a feeling the British public are growing nervous and worried about where it may lead them. And we would all benefit from a far more open debate. It is not healthy for any country to suppress disagreement. When the British establishment is totally united, it is almost always wrong.

The scenes of general adulation of Volodymyr Zelensky in Parliament last week reminded me of the last time the whole country was agreed – the Covid panic. And most thinking people are beginning to learn that our response to the virus was a series of dangerous mistakes, which wounded the economy, badly hurt the NHS, ravaged education in schools and universities, caused much needless personal misery and gravely undermined the national work ethic.

At that time, it was very hard to oppose what was going on. Those who did were called ‘deniers’ and accused of callous disregard for life.

Now, if you have doubts about the Ukraine war, you will find yourself falsely accused of being a defender of Mr Putin, or of being a ‘denier’ of war crimes.

Helping Ukraine defend itself against a lawless attack was a simple issue. And the Russian offensive, incompetently led and ill-planned, was mangled and largely halted very quickly.

But supplying highly offensive weapons, tanks, long-range missiles, perhaps jet bombers, is different. If your neighbour is attacked, you go to his aid. But if he then wishes to make his own attack, you might not be so keen to join.

Someone might be able to help me here- if I retire early and cash in my super, the canbra pubes help themselves to 30% – is that correct?

I just did exactly that at less than their declared ‘preservation age’ of 59 in my case (it is rising into the future).

I lost 15% for the ‘roll out’ but this was apparently going to happen regardless of when I did it because it was a ‘tax deferred’ fund.

I then lost another 15% of the lump sum I took, plus the medicare levy, all up a bit over 31%

Yes, an “untaxed fund” (usually government defined benefit) has to pay 15% on the way out. This is largely unavoidable if you are in an “untaxed” fund (which most private funds and SMSFs are not). The further 15% is the tax for taking it prior to preservation. This can be avoidable with a bit of planning.
This is why I always advise people to max out their borrowing potential if they are approaching retirement. If your mortgage is paid off or has a low balance, arrange a mortgage for 80% of valuation with redraw capability. If you are made redundant at age 58 with a preservation age of 60, you can take up to the initial tax free threshold of withdrawals, and then draw on the mortgage until you reach preservation age. A couple of years interest cost (likely offset by earnings on money left in super) would probably be better than paying the 15% tax.
The point is, have the loan facility in place. No point going to the bank after you are made redundant.
Every situation is slightly different so you need to get advice on your specific circumstances. But also be wary of advisors. If you are in a government defined benefit fund, their main focus will be to get the money out and put it somewhere they can earn commission on. They won’t be too concerned that you pay 15% on the way out. For them, commission on 85% is better than no commission.

DeSantis calls the bureaucrats’ bluff

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has a plan for freeing public universities from the stranglehold of their diversity, equity, and inclusion bureaucracies. Before DeSantis launched this effort, it was widely believed, even among those who recognized the dangers of DEI , that there was really nothing public officials could do about the problem. Just like the weather, it was simply something we would all have to learn to live with.

Public universities were thought to be outside of political control, and academic culture was thought to be too committed to DEI goals. But DeSantis is proving that something can be done. His plan is likely to make significant progress in dismantling DEI in higher education.

DeSantis is showing that DEI is not beyond the reach of elected officials, at least not at public universities. In most states, public universities are state agencies, just like the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Game and Fish Commission. They may have their own boards of trustees, but those boards were created, and can be modified, by legislation, and their activities are governed by state laws and regulations. States can reorganize how public universities are structured to achieve public purposes better, just as they can reorganize the DMV. Lawmakers may alter the size and composition of the Game and Fish Commission, as well as the process for appointing those officials, and they can do the same with the boards of public universities.

In the past, state officials refrained from addressing the rise of DEI bureaucracies in public universities, not out of an inability to do so legally but from a conviction that it was somehow inappropriate for them to interfere.

DeSantis’s innovation was to recognize that this self-restraint was unnecessary, counterproductive, and based largely on a misunderstanding of what DEI bureaucracies actually are.

DEI units at universities are not faculty, nor are they engaged in the core functions of teaching and conducting research. They are staff with the ostensible purpose of helping welcome students, faculty, and staff from different backgrounds to campus and creating conditions that facilitate their success. DEI staff members develop a set of practices and inculcate related dispositions that university leaders believe are necessary for welcoming diverse groups and ensuring that they thrive. One might say that DEI staff members articulate and enforce a university-approved orthodoxy regarding a set of divisive political concerns.

Let’s leave aside the appropriateness of university staff serving as a political commissariat to police an approved political ideology. DEI staff members clearly are not covered by traditional norms protecting academic freedom because their activities do not consist of teaching classes or conducting research. They are staff, just like the bureaucrats who run student housing or work in the bursar’s office.

No one thinks that how students are assigned to housing or pay their bills are matters covered by academic freedom.

By recognizing that public university DEI bureaucracies are protected by neither law nor norms of academic freedom, DeSantis has shed the self-imposed shackles that deterred earlier efforts to rein them in.

In the process, he has also demonstrated just how weak the support for DEI bureaucracies is in the academy outside of those bureaucracies themselves.

To dismantle DEI, DeSantis is pursuing a series of initiatives. Most directly, he has proposed “forbidding institutions from using any funding to support initiatives relating to diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, critical race theory, and other programs he considers discriminatory.” Defunding the DEI bureaucracy is the most obvious way to dismantle DEI.

But DeSantis understands that DEI activities may simply get renamed and reappear elsewhere within the university, so he does not rely solely on defunding DEI.

He is taking other steps to block any attempt to end-run his defunding effort. For instance, he is seeking to ban diversity statements from being required as part of hiring or promoting faculty. And he has appointed a slate of anti-DEI trustees to the New College of Florida, one of the state’s smaller but most prestigious public institutions. Placing vocal critics of DEI, such as Chris Rufo and Mark Bauerlein, in charge of a state college has sent a clear signal to all of Florida’s state universities that DeSantis is serious about dismantling DEI.

To drive home the message, the newly appointed board removed the president of the New College in short order. That left no doubt. Senior university administrators who attempted to shield DEI would suffer consequences.

The 28 presidents of the Florida College System got the message. In a joint statement , they acknowledged, “The presidents of the Florida College System (FCS) also understand that some initiatives and instruction in higher education under the same title [DEI] have come to mean and accomplish the very opposite and seek to push ideologies such as critical race theory and its related tenets.” They then pledged that “our institutions will not fund or support any institutional practice, policy, or academic requirement that compels belief in critical race theory or related concepts such as intersectionality, or the idea that systems of oppression should be the primary lens through which teaching and learning are analyzed and/or improved upon.”

At Texas Tech University, leaders abandoned the use of diversity statements in professor hiring within hours of the publication of a piece in the Wall Street Journal documenting how those statements were being used to discriminate and keep out qualified candidates. The collapse of DEI continued to spread the next day, as Rufo reported on Twitter, “ Texas Gov. Abbott’s chief of staff sent a letter to all state universities warning that their DEI programs violate civil rights law .” The speed of DEI’s capitulation may make the French stand against the Germans look like Thermopylae.

The fact that higher education leaders could fold so quickly should not come as a surprise.

The truth is that few university administrators, faculty, and students have any deep commitment to protecting DEI bureaucracies. It’s fair to say that the only enthusiastic supporters of campus DEI bureaucracies are those employed in them and the relatively small group of rabble-rousing students who can be organized by the DEI machinery to menace other administrators, faculty, or students who deviate from their orthodoxy.

This is the other key innovation of DeSantis’s strategy — and why it is likely to succeed. It was previously believed that university leaders, faculty, and students were so ideologically committed to DEI that those institutions could not be changed even if reforming politicians gained control of boards of trustees and ordered changes. Even many strong opponents of DEI thought that higher education was too recalcitrant to reform. DeSantis could see DEI for the paper tiger that it is, allowing him to tear it down.

Understanding how weak the support for DEI bureaucracies is on campus requires dispensing with old stereotypes of academics and thinking more clearly about how they perceive their interests. Senior university administrators should be thought of as being like the senior leaders of communist regimes just before the wall fell. They may mouth devotion to the communist revolution, but they are defined more by ruthless ambition than ideological commitment. Administrators in higher education rise within their institutions and get to move to higher-status universities not by scholarly accomplishment but by carefully avoiding scandal while checking all of the boxes of fashionable initiatives.

Those fashionable initiatives may look like ideology, but since fashions regularly change, successful administrators need to have weak ideological commitments so they can readily change to conform with the initiatives of the changing guard above them.

As I understand it, once you in ATO-spik “formally retire” and thus can access your super after the preservation age (which I did) you can only work 10% of full time equivalent.

A nasty little bit of nastiness the ATO does if you do access your super is to regard it as income in that year. Then they offset that humungous sum with a humungous offset. But the result is you then have to pay effing provisional tax based on that supposed income for the next 18 months. Which you then get back as refunds a year or so later. So be careful you don’t get caught with five figure demands from the ATO each quarter that you didn’t expect. They really do go out of the way to be bastards to people who want to get their own money away from their clutches.

Anti-ageing scientists extend lifespan of oldest living lab rat

Research teases hopes that ‘rejuvenation of the body may become commonplace within our lifetimes’
47-month-old Sima, who is the oldest living Spague-Dawley rat recorded in scientific literature, and is the beneficiary of blood plasma treatments scientists believe have extended her life
Sima, at 47 months old the oldest living Spague-Dawley rat, was the beneficiary of blood plasma treatments scientists believe have extended her life. Photograph: handout

Scientists working on an experimental anti-ageing therapy claim to have broken a record by extending the lifespan of a lab rat called Sima.

Named after the Hindi word for “limit” or “boundary”, Sima is the last remaining survivor from a group of rodents that received infusions of blood plasma taken from young animals to see if the treatment prolonged their lives.

Sima, who was born on 28 February 2019, has lived for 47 months, surpassing the 45.5 months believed to be the oldest age recorded in scientific literature for a female Sprague-Dawley rat, the researchers say. So far, Sima has outlived her closest rival in the study by nearly six months.

3.3% . Is that in any way meaningful? Perhaps it is because the average life span of a rat is two years.

Even if we take the 3.5 years for this rat sub-species, which is 42 months an extra 5 months is meaningful.

The average litter size of the Sprague Dawley rat is 10.5. The adult body weight is 250–300g for females, and 450–520g for males. The typical life span is 2.5–3.5 years. These rats typically have increased tail to body length ratio compared with Wistar rats.

Is the Albanian a flamer as he sure looks like on.

Thoughts?

Thanks, JC.
Apparently he’s known as Dennis by those in the know.

Now, this is a part of the Old Australia.
If, say, a young bloke named Anthony got a huge leg up in life courtesy of an older established bloke named Dennis, then those in the know as to what went down would call Anthony by Dennis ever after.

As well as that, he’s just a poofter of a bloke.
One of only 5 who woulda voted for Rudd if he hadda called for a vote against Gillard.
Rudd made him Deputy PM when he rolled Gillard and Albanese just made Rudd Ambassador to Washington, even though he’s totally unsuited.

The claim was that phosgene was also produced?

Quite possible. Phosgene is COCl2 as I recall. Vinyl chloride is C2CHCl, so if you burn it in lowish oxygen conditions, like those photos suggest, you might get a bit of phosgene.

A colleague of mine was big on vinyl chemistry. I was an alkynyl sort of guy myself. 😀
Interestingly he served in my AAR regiment (in which I failed to make corporal) and became quite senior, captain or major, and did an exchange with the UK armed services. He’s now a prof in the UK somewhere, last I looked.

A generous and gracious hand has been offered to our Indigenous people over many, many years by nurses, doctors, legal entities, governments, schools and the population in general. Billions of dollars has been spent through programs run by Indigenous people. I cannot see how the Voice will change anything and could, in fact, reduce the goodwill that has been built up in current Australian society where Indigenous people are constantly given acknowledgment and respect. I would hate the Voice to create a climate of “them and us”

More Clarkson reality on the Oxforshire Council twitter feed

I’ve been watching this. Unlike your average farmer, Clarkson has a bottomless pit of money to throw at his farm- to diversify. To cows, portable chicken roosts, fancy crush pens, big tractors, telehandlers, consultants and contractors galore etc. Just breaking even for him is a Major goal. Soon, 82k pa in Govt subsidy disappears.

So , the local farmers are I imagine quite jealous of Clarkson. I suspect he is making it look a lot more fun than it really is. Which doesn’t do their cause (get more Govt subsidy) much good.

Makka,

totally disagree – Clarkson is pointing out the reality that its B’Hard to make money out of Farming – his end profit at end Season 1, GBP 144.00

he stresses non stop that with the removal of the GBP 82,000.00 Euro Subsidy after Brexit, Farmers will be destitute – he is trying to come up with innovative ways to enhance farm income as a lead for other farmers

Of the group of farmers he is dealing with – due to the stupidity you can’t kill Badgers & there is a TB Epidemic, the Milk Lady has lost 60 of her 120 Cows to TB and the only way she keeps going is being able to sell her milk through Didly Squat Shop

As Clarkson says – A cow sold to the Supermarket gets GBP 1200.00 – by gettting his cows locally slaughtered and used as Restaurant meat he can get up to GBP 15,000.00

The Farmer near Silverstone, has taken Jeremy’s using the Barn to look at using similar buildings on his farm re-imagined to cater to Silverstone Attendees

Similarly the Pig Farmers have excess Pigs due cheaper pork coming in from EU, and Clarkson’s Shop & Restaurant enable them to just survive.

What Clarkson is pointing out that if the Farmers go under – where will the food come from – Looking back to WWII

Re Your Statement – Clarkson has a bottomless pit of money to throw at his farm

Even he and Cheerful Charlie balked at the GBP 500,000.00+ to appeal the Council Decision

Have a look at the sums run up for Environmental and other checks – Red Tape gone mad

They keep pointing out the money spent to start each enterprise & how long it takes to try and get in the Black, if ever.

It is a sobering look at Farming
