I’ve mention previously on the Cat but not perhaps with the same clarity as that article’s author, that for the most part, Russians are stoic in their acceptance of a burden imposed (for whatever reason) by the West. It is not that they ‘don’t care’ per se, it is that they accept life has its tribulations and hardships that cannot be avoided and must be endured.

Totally agree.
One just has to see the Russian people’s resilience during the Soviet dystopia, as per the documentaries I alluded to above.
While the West’s pusillaminous, faggotty elites worry about their pronouns, and masturbate over their diversity, inclusivity delusions.

Who knew such things existed?

Saudis only respect power and they obviously don’t think Biden’s US deserves that respect regardless of how much hardware they have. The abandonment of all the hardware in Afghanistan has obviously been seen as extreme weakness in military leadership. Disarray, even.

Id be inclined to view this with a jaundiced eye.
Sounds “too good to be true’ = usually is.

Now they are just laughing at us and saying “What are you going to do about it?”

On the other hand, FBI is full of knaves not necessarily clever ones.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has become the latest politician to slam controversial Senator Lidia Thorpe for her attendance at a ‘women’s rights’ rally that resulted in a scuffle with federal police, labelling her actions as “pathetic” and “embarrassing”.

No Peter, she was more than embarrassing, she was menacing and should be expelled from Senate.

Dutton never fails to disappoint, this was a perfect time to lay in the boot. He is completely incompetent and needs to be demoted. The problem is that there is nobody else in the Libs worth a bob.

The Net Zero crowd are obviously Number One in the environmentalist hierarchy at present. But, there are rumblings from old fashioned tree huggers who are getting cranky about wind and solar facilities despoiling the countryside and adversely affecting wildlife and plants. See Brown, Bob as a local example.

The old fashioned tree huggers are just that – old- and don’t stand a chance against the new and young greenies ho don’t have to get dirty out in the fields when tapping away on their phones is all that’s required from them.

the West we no longer have serious and credible leaders and politicians in the mould of Pope John Paul II, Thatcher, Reagan, Kohl and Mitterand, instead we have grotesque corrupt adolescent called Trudeau, a mincing Napoleon imitator called Macron and the worst…a venal, corrupt, and senile rotting corpse in the WH who, when he’s not spending time with a pervert like Dylan Mulvaney, is walking around dazed and confused, having to be propped up by his obscenity of a wife.

Looks like Tik Tok is on the way out in the US:

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce hearing on Thursday was an “abject disaster” for TikTok, and even appeared to result in lawmakers announcing their support for banning the China-owned app, according to one former Politico writer, and many other verified users on Twitter seem to agree.

“This hearing is an abject disaster for TikTok,” Punchbowl News reporter and veteran Poltiico writer Andrew Desiderio reacted, adding that “Several lawmakers are announcing — mid hearing — their support for a TikTok ban.”

Several lawmakers are announcing — mid-hearing — their support for a TikTok ban. https://t.co/UNW5nWvzxf

— Andrew Desiderio (@AndrewDesiderio) March 23, 2023

“[In my opinion] this is done. I don’t see any way TikTok isn’t banned at this point,” Founders Fund Vice President Mike Solana tweeted. “Bi-partisan certainty the CCP is spying on 150 million Americans. They’re furious. I have never seen them lock-step in a hearing like this.”

IMO this is done. I don’t see any way TikTok isn’t banned at this point. Bi-partisan certainty the CCP is spying on 150 million Americans. They’re furious. I have never seen them lock-step in a hearing like this.

And so on.

Seems they have found something they can agree on, although how it would work in practice remains to be seen. Also, how long it will take to be implemented.

Politicians are very good at huffing and puffing in public, but what actually happens afterwards is a whole nother thing.

There are many cultures where differing sexual orientations were tolerated if not accepted as part of the general cultural milieu. Not sure if Victorian voters are really worse than the rest or deserve this.

Andrews was definitively the worst Premier during COVID, but name something he’s done and I reckon I can bring up something that the LNP did in NSW or the ALP did in Queensland. Also remember we had Morrison convening that absurd national cabinet. Palaszczuk is very left wing and Jackie Trad, the former Treasurer is a genuine communist in all but name.

Did anyone who voted enthusiastically for Abbott in 2013 and continually for the Federal LNP to avoid an ALP Green alliance government like what got with Gillard, do they deserve what they get?

In a democracy you get the government you deserve, except when the lying is colossal, chronic and widespread.

The only way out is to stop voting for establishment parties but compulsory full preferential voting like at the Federal level protects the status quo. It kills organic change and incremental growth stone dead.

Never forget Matthias Cormann and the Greens conspired to change the Senate voting system to shaft small parties like PHON, LDP, AC and so on.

Those minor parties getting organic growth and seats proportional to their votes would have let them grow, development of a true opposition and not surrender virtually all Senate seats to a cabal that 1/3 of Australians do not support at all.

Of course Russia should beat Ukraine but that is not beating the West. Don’t erect straw men, I made no reference to Ukraine. The F22s alone would be devasting to Russian air assets. One US Navy fleet could take out most of Russia’s navy. Russia’s biggest military asset the size of the country, not its military capacity.

Prior to this conflict did you read any analyses about the problems in the Russian military? The consensus was there were serious problems. How obvious is that when the Kuznetsov needed a sea going tug always with it because it broke down so often? All those rusting subs in dock. It is now retrofitting aging T62 tanks, first produced in 1961. It still hasn’t achieved air superiority in Ukraine. Aircrew training is estimated at less one hundred hours per year. 200 hours is regarded as the absolute minimum to maintain readiness. So many tanks and armoured vehicles were lost because of breakdowns and running out of fuel.

A man is sleeping next to his wife, when he hears a loud knock on his door.

He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it’s 3 AM!

“I’m not getting out of bed at this time” he thinks, and rolls over.

Then, a louder knock follows.

“Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is man standing at the door. It didn’t take the homeowner long to realise the man was drunk.

“Hi there” slurs the stranger “can you give me a push?” “No, get lost! It’s 3 AM. I was in bed asleep!” says the man before slamming the door.

He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says “Dave, that wasn’t very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the babysitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again? What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost!?”

“But the guy was drunk!” says the husband. “It doesn’t matter” says the wife “he needs our help and it’s the Christian thing to help him!”

So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts “Hey, do you still want a push?” He hears a voice cry out “Yeah please”.

Still being unable to see the stranger he shouts “Where are you?” And the stranger replies “Over here… on the swing”.

Dunno about Putin himself, I would more suspect the heads of the regular Russian armed forces who don’t like Prigozhin using mercenary convicts to muscle in on their turf. Various MoD carpet stroller would have a lot of incentive to white-ant Wagner, and judging from the high volume of Prigozhin’s screaming about lack of ammo they have been undermining him for months already.

The fact that Wagner can’t forcibly recruit any more convicts tends to suggest Prigozhin’s 15 minutes of fame are nearly up.

Minusrus is now estimating roughly 3500 tanks lost. Oynx is saying about 1800. I wonder what the error bar of these estimates are?

When the USA had that tank war with Iraq the USA lost more tanks to friendly fire than from the Iraqis. The Iraqi tanks were target practice and didn’t have good targeting and aiming technology. In this conflict there are much better technologies but those figures still seem incredibly high. Nor can I believe 6898 armoured vehicles.

Fyodor Lukyanov: Here’s the real reason why Russia and China want to replace the US-led international order

The two powers share the same goal, but circumstance dictates they have to take different roads to make it happen

By Fyodor Lukyanov, the editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs, chairman of the Presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, and research director of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

Russia and China don’t fit into the international system built under Western auspices after the Cold War. They are therefore in favor of replacing it. And it is easier to change it together.

“We hope the world will become a better place, and we have reason to believe it will. At the same time, we are well aware that the future is bright, but the road there is winding.”

This statement by Xi Jinping, which echoes a similar argument made by Mao Zedong in the 1940s, is exactly ten years old. The recently elected President of China was paying his first official visit to Moscow, during which he gave a lecture at MGIMO University.

A decade later, Xi returned to Russia this week at the start of his third term at the helm, and you could say he was right on the money then. The past few years have been full of twists and turns, and the world is about to take perhaps one of its sharpest in more than half a century. Meantime, the rhetoric of the Chinese leadership has changed little.

It is a peculiarity of our giant neighbor’s political culture that the language is always extremely polished, so that no one can pick at it. Only subtle connoisseurs can pick up on nuances that serve as indicators of changes in the political line. And even then, it is mostly related to China’s internal development. The message conveyed to the outside world hardly fluctuates at all. Of course, this does not mean that the actual course is not changing.

What has happened in the ten years since that visit, which was also very significant and meaningful? In China, Xi’s reign has been a time of rethinking the trajectory of development. The golden era of globalization, from which Beijing benefited enormously, essentially ended with the 2008 crisis. It then became clear that the global system was beginning to experience serious disruptions, the management of which would be the main task of every major player.

For their own benefit and at the expense of others, the Chinese coped with the recession faster and easier than others and strengthened their position. And the old model, in which the US was comfortable and even encouraged by China’s growth and benefited from it, has become no longer in America’s interest. Beijing began to be perceived as the main competitor capable of challenging the world hegemon. And there has been only one conclusion to be drawn – containment on all fronts.

In addition to changing external circumstances, Xi’s own outlook has played a role. He is more oriented than his predecessors to China’s own experience, from classical philosophy to the various stages of socialist construction. The fusion of ancient tradition with influences from the modern People’s Republic of China already creates a distinctive construction that cannot be suspected of being a transition to a Western-style system (in an earlier period of reform, such expectations existed amongst the US and its allies).

Xi’s decade was marked by a rapid escalation of all the world’s contradictions. The CCP’s plan was initially to strengthen China in order to secure its development and, as far as possible, avoid getting involved in conflicts. Capacity-building also entails an increase in self-confidence. And the provocative actions of external powers, which have their own ways of responding to the same unsettling circumstances, have forced Beijing to respond.

China, battered by the coronavirus pandemic, has approached the Ukrainian crisis with the understanding that an era of calm is over.

And further success is possible not by avoiding international conflicts, as Beijing used to prefer, but by engaging in them in a meaningful way. Moreover, in terms of its accumulated capabilities, China is better prepared for times of turmoil than many others. This does not remove the risks, and it does not eliminate them.

In Russia, the last ten years have been a period of no small reversal. The logic is partly similar, although the circumstances are of course very different.

For China, however, the late 20th and early 21st century was a period of unprecedented growth by any measure, while for Russia it was a period of deep decline and difficult recovery. Nevertheless, Russia also faced the exhaustion of its previous development model. Since the late 1980s, the focus has been on integration into the international system dominated by the West. Russia has made progress along this path (though not to the same extent as China). In the late 2000s and especially in the early 2010s, however, its limitations became apparent.

Firstly, economic: the external actors were naturally not interested in seeing Russia rise above a certain level, and there was a lack of will on their part to ensure that this barrier could be overcome independently.

Second, the geopolitical conflict began to escalate rapidly. Russia had reached a ceiling here, too. Its partners did not want to help it any further, and it proved impossible to reach the next floor on its own, while maintaining the basic parameters of the previous course. All the more so because Moscow, like Beijing, felt that the very system into which it had been asked to integrate in previous decades was beginning to change.

The above is, of course, a rough sketch that leaves out a lot of nuance. But it allows us to understand why the current rapprochement between Moscow and Beijing, apart from various opportunistic bases, has a fairly solid foundation.

Our countries, each for its own reasons, do not and will not fit into the international system built under the auspices of the West after the Cold War. That is why they are in favor of replacing it, and it is easier to change it together.

The Chinese are meticulous with their wording, polishing it to a dazzling shine that leaves no room for superfluous thoughts. And they have always been careful to avoid the terms “alliance” or “union” because they imply something binding, which is not their approach at all.

After his talks with Putin, Xi said: “Sino-Russian relations have gone beyond bilateral relations and are of vital importance to the modern world order and the destiny of mankind.”

In other words, he sees them as ties that constitute a holistic phenomenon and, as such, serve as a factor in world order. This is the closest the Chinese leader has come to describing alliance-type relations. A qualitative shift.

The Russians Are Pulling 70-Year-Old T-55 Tanks Out Of Storage (22 Feb)

Thirteen months into Russia’s wider war on Ukraine, the first videos and photos have circulated depicting 1950s-vintage T-55 tanks on train cars in Russia, apparently bound for one of the country’s two tank plants, where technicians could recondition them before shipping them onward to the Ukraine front.

Amazing. The Russians never throw anything away. They’re like pack rats.

I heard that the Wagner Group of crack troops (crack, get it?) are in big trouble. This could be true or just war propaganda. If it is true, I have a hunch that Putin could have put them in harm’s way, causing their destruction. If Wagner Group looked like a winner, the head of this tidy bunch of cutthroats could be the one seriously challenging Putin’s leadership.

I was surprised by their heavy reliance on Wagner mercenaries. Reports I’ve read suggest they are largely cannon fodder. It will be the generals setting up Wagner to fail. There was a report earlier this week where a Wagner official said he thought the lack of ammunition supplies was a deliberate attempt to cause massive losses. Is Russia is having trouble finding suitable recruits? What happens if Wagner leaves?

The Ukes have been suffering some attrition too of course, but the generals would rate Wagner troops as useless on an offensive so they are eminently expendable. Whoever survives would have had some decent field training and might get absorbed by the regular army. The MoD would be happy that both sides are draining each other without their better troops being risked. Then when the roads become useable after winter withdraws, the real Russian army will take the field leaving Prigozhin’s losers far to the rear in body bags.

That’s their immediate plan, anyway. Whether it will help them appreciably when the next consignment of European tanks and planes arrive on the Uke side is another matter.

US planning ‘special envoy’ for Russia’s main ally – Blinken

The new appointee will have a role in supporting exiled forces opposing the government of Belarus

The US government will “very soon” select a special envoy for Belarus, to coordinate Washington’s efforts to bolster the country’s Lithuania-based opposition, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told senators.

The pledge was made during a visit to the US by Belarusian opposition figure Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who urged Western nations to “de-recognize” the government in Minsk.

Blinken was questioned about the lack of a special envoy for Belarus by Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire during a budget hearing held by the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday. Without such an official, “there is no one who could encourage the Europeans and the US to work together or to serve as a conduit for the opposition movement,” the lawmaker claimed.

The secretary of state said he was considering appointing “a senior official in our European Affairs Bureau to also serve as the envoy, to be able to then go in and out, engaged at senior levels with the opposition”.

The department already has a Belarus Affairs Unit in Lithuania, where many of the opposition forces are based, and the envoy would complement “day-in and day-out engagement” by that office, Blinken suggested.

Belarus, a key ally of Russia, underwent mass protests and riots in 2020, after the opposition accused President Alexander Lukashenko’s government of rigging the ballot to ensure his re-election.

Presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has emerged as the West’s preferred choice of anti-Lukashenko figurehead in the wake of the turmoil. She is currently touring the US to meet senior officials in Washington and rally support.

Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met her on Wednesday to outline the US “intent to launch a comprehensive Strategic Dialogue” with Belarusian opposition forces and “bring together relevant agencies of the US government engaged on Belarus,” according to a statement released by the State Department.

Tikhanovskaya claimed during an interview on Morning Joe on MSNBC that supporting her meant fighting against “Russian ambition” in Europe, and linked her cause with that of Ukraine. “Our sovereignty is at stake” she claimed, accusing Moscow of conducting a “creeping, or hybrid occupation” of Belarus.

When asked by host Mika Brzezinski what kind of support she was looking for in the US, Tikhanovskaya said: “Derecognition of Lukashenko’s regime and recognition of the democratic forces.”

Casseroles are still very popular in our house, Joh. We have at least one every week, from a variety of cuisines: French Bourguignon, Hungarian veal, Moroccan chicken, Spaetzle and good oldfashioned Aussie beef and veg casserole.

Even the trendy young chickies in our family have their favourite casserole recipe and the results of their efforts are surprisingly good.

And they’re a favourite with the head cook – me – because they are wonderfully economical, nutritious (hate that word) and they fill the house with glorious olfactory memories as they rock away all afternoon.

Court rejects appeal of disgraced German Green politician involved in far-right hate hoax

Manoj Subramaniam, among other things, painted swastikas onto his property and claimed he was being subjected to sustained harassment by far-right extremists
March 16, 2023

An appeal against the fine imposed on a German Green party politician who embarked on faking a long-running allegation of harassment against him by far-right extremists has been dismissed by a German court.

Manoj Subramaniam, a 33-year-old former local Green councilor in the German town of Erkelenz, alleged last July he had been subjected to sustained acts of harassment by anonymous right-wing extremists. He showed police evidence of the abuse he had received, which included a threatening letter with a razor blade inserted and a swastika drawn onto his vehicle in red paint.

The case made national headlines last year with several prominent politicians offering their solidarity with Subramaniam for the abuse he had received.

“Right-wing extremists are threatening political volunteers to silence them. Thank you, Manoj Subramaniam, for not being silent and raising your voice,” stated Lamya Kaddor, a member of the Bundestag.

Federal police took protective measures for the politician’s safety, and an intensive investigation was initiated by state security, all at considerable cost to the taxpayer. The only issue, however, was that Subramaniam had made it all up.

Boambee, nothing you say will ever make a difference, but you clog up pages and pages under the assumption that it is anything but trolling. You are the one being used. Or perhaps you just want to be seen as superior, so you take the next bait that gives you the chance to show how smart you are by taking the bait.

Not the MSM. Military analysts tucked away in obscure journals and interviewed on various forums. I read\view them weekly. Don’t BS me with the source fallacy. That’s just an easy way out and betrays a fundamental error because a general statement must always be proven relevant to a specific case. You are another person who seems to think that if person A stops position A1 they must be an imbecile. That type of thinking is irrational. Stop pretending you can make judgement calls about person’s intellectual calibre because of a single position that person maintains.

For every “expert” who supports the anti-Russian narrative, one can find another who has the diametrically opposite view, eg. Gen McGregor, Scott Ritter et al.. who happen to sound authoritative, but who are most likely making unsupported inferences consistent with their biases.
Everything we are being told is based on necessarily incomplete knowledge, supported by the interlocutor’s generous confirmation bias.
It was obvious months ago and, from what I can gather, hasn’t changed.
Such biases are on daily display on this blog.

We are in the middle of one of the most controversial, politically-charged, violent conflicts since Iraq, wild claims of impending WW III and virtually no video evidence, except for propagandatous, disconnected snippets on Twitter and Tik Tok.
And thus everyone is an expert.
Yeah, right.

There is a difference between interpretation and facts. If you truly believed that all information is contaminated you wouldn’t have an opinion at all.

Not everything is contaminated by cognitive failings. The Ukraine issue for sure, obviously huge problems getting at the truth there but that hasn’t stopped thousands of opinions being expressed here.

I didn’t claim to be an expert, I stated I relied on people who are widely recognized as experts. Not on twitters, not on Tiktok, on websites and forums were those experts are expressing their views. There could be some bias in play but stating that without evidence in itself bias. Yes, I appreciate that is a rabbit hole so deep we would transverse the planet going down it. Many of these experts are also critical of Western military approaches. For example, recently one expert said the laughable aspect of the USA hypersonic missile is that for the same price it could have 80 tomahawk missiles and that is a bigger threat than one hypersonic missile.

BTW the WWIII hype surrounding China may well turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. To put on my conspiracy hat … . A few years ago US military analysts argued that if the China threat isn’t contained within a decade it will be impossible to contain it. That makes a lot of sense because China is now building the J20 at high rates, has another stealth fighter about to go into production, has more naval vessels than the USA(but lower tonnage), has a huge number of medium range missiles, and ~78 submarines(most conventional). So a few years latter, nearly every week now, China China China we must do somefing everybody panic!!!

Like Moran’s toon with its little points of light in a sea of woes, you may be beleaguered but you are never alone.

A woman I hardly know came up to me at dance class today and whispered to me that she was barely able to constrain her anger at Albanese about the Voice; my views are known to quite a few even though our coffee group (which can be around 20 women) is not overtly political and for harmony’s sake many people do not wish it to be. This woman was really upset and wanted to vent about how the Voice madness was affecting her. I had the feeling that she’d been stewing on it all night and I wonder how many others feel alone and powerless in this way.

With the Cat, we are never alone when the need to vent politically becomes strong but it is not a site for everyone, especially those who are making tentative steps. Try commenting on the Australian, I suggested to this woman whom I hardly know.

I suggested to another woman recently whom I know better, feeling similarly powerless, that she might like to join the IPA, which she did. Hairy and I took her to one of their occasions some months ago. She came up to me today saying she went to their recent gathering on the Voice (we didn’t make it) and had never felt so supported and less alone struggling with her feelings about it.

Trans rights in general are important, like the basic freedom to be who they are.

They have a mental pathology. Their demands are not just for normalisation but making the structural values of the rest of society abnormal or at least subordinate. At the very least they have revealed the cowardice and decadence of the West’s leaders. except Trump and DeSantis of course.

Qualification for world-class sporting events is relatively unimportant in the wide scheme of things.

This is the tip of the trans iceberg: general obliteration of womanhood, the family and corruption of children are the main games. Now get back to baby-sitting the milko’s kiddies.

NSW election 2023: Manly teal candidate Joeline Hackman blasted over home renovations

EXCLUSIVE

The chief executive of a NSW Aboriginal land council has blasted the teal independent candidate for Manly for opposing a development while pushing forward with the renovation of her home against the wishes of her neighbours.

Joeline Hackman took the Northern Beaches Council to court after the renovations of her Manly home – which include adding an extra floor, bedroom, bathroom and pool – were twice knocked back by the council’s planning process in part due to the excessive bulk of the proposed development.

Ms Hackman, who is campaigning on a platform of environmentalism, integrity and rigorous standards for medium-density developments, is opposing a development at the Lizard Rock site in Belrose proposed by the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.

MLALC chief executive officer Nathan Moran said Ms Hackman was a hypocrite for opposing plans to build 450 homes in bushland while pushing forward with her own home renovations.

“Improving her asset or her personal amenity to have a swimming pool seems to be more important than say an Aboriginal Land Council trying to realise self-determination for Aboriginal land rights,” he said.

Mr Moran added that “what‘s good for the geese is good for the gander” and it was wrong to “preach one thing and practise another”.

Ms Hackman’s neighbours lodged several objections with the council to the proposed development due to the impact on their homes, before the Manly candidate appealed in the NSW Land and Environment Court.

Ms Hackman said her home renovation plans couldn’t be compared to the proposed development at Lizard Rock and that her opposition was commonsense and not political.

“The NSW government is allowing the equivalent of two Lizard Rock development sites to be cleared every single day,” she said.

“You cannot compare a development of 450 dwellings involving the destruction of native plants and animal habitat in a high-risk fire zone to that of a single family home DA (development application) in an established community, which has followed the appropriate approval process.”

The Lizard Rock development was first knocked back by the council but was being fast-tracked under new NSW planning rules.

The Liberals have flagged they will block the proposed development if re-elected, a move interpreted as an attempt to block the electoral threat posed by the teals.

Ms Hackman is seeking to unseat Environment Minister James Griffin, who holds Manly with a margin of 12.9 per cent.

Absolutely. I had that in mind when I argued trans people have to be realistic about how much we can bend to their wishes. They aren’t though, and the woke people, even though frequently being mauled in public debate, continue with their position.

The absurdity is that the trans would say, but we’re women too!

They have confused being treated with respect with being worthy of exceptional privilege. What is worse, much worse, is that they demand the feelings of others be ignored and their feelings be paramount. I must qualify that by adding that the two trans individuals I have encountered online were opposed to transition therapies, were both very intelligent, did not demand exceptional privilege, and neither gave a hint of being mentally ill.

“bothered”…no not bothered, rather concerned, worried and offended.

“As were yours.”

No they weren’t. But you seem “bothered” when someone contradicts you.

If I was bothered I would be using pejoratives and insulting people on a regular basis. Today I have been called an incredulous imbecile. That’s a new one. Leave the psychoanalysis do those so trained and even then don’t trust them! If I was so bothered please explain why I would bother being on this forum where I have little respect and where I have been repeatedly insulted by people? That is not the behavior of people bothered by being contradicted. It is the behavior of people who respect James Watson’s quip, “If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.”

You made an assertion without considering the perils of everyday language and why people use different words to describe their emotional state. That’s why the use of folk psychology words and concepts is fraught with peril. That is why philosophers and professionals use jargon. They want specificity. We accept that the use of everyday language is too often loaded with ambiguity. One person is concerned, another is worried, there is no objective measure across individuals to determine which is the best word.

To put on my conspiracy hat … . A few years ago US military analysts argued that if the China threat isn’t contained within a decade it will be impossible to contain it.

This is a real worry and missteps will be likely…
The Kaiser’s advisors told him if that if he didn’t deal with Russia before 1918. Russia was rearming the infantry with new rifles and upgrading it’s artillery.

The Bohemian Corporal’s advisors told him much the same thing, invade by 1945 or the Red Army would have recovered from the great purge and the new tanks and artillery.

Amazing. The Russians never throw anything away. They’re like pack rats.

Somebody at STAVKA probably realised sending fifty thousand 100mm rounds
down range was better than leaving them in warehouses to be taken as war booty

Oil prices have dropped 50% off their recent highs.

Even after the war and the sanctions, but it’s not quite 1/2 it’s ~40%. Natural gas is down from around $10 bucks to $2.20!

The thing that really has me up at night is the slope of the yield curve. It’s the most inverted I think I’ve ever seen. This scares the living daylight out of me. If the bond market thought inflation was long term, the 1o year bond would be over 5% plus. Instead, it’s trading at 3.5%. I think the Fed has overdone the tightening. You have three levels of monetary tightening going on.

1. Fast move up in interest rates
2. The banking quagmire
3. QT , which is quantitative tightening of about US$100 billion a month. Fed is reversing QE.

Diogenes:

My father’s family, lived in Hungary for nearly a thousand years, then woke up one day in Romania.
My paternal grandmothers’s family, lived in Germany for at least 800 years. Woke up one morning to discover they were now Russian.
My maternal GGF, his family lived in Lothringen as far back as they can trace. Were German for centuries, until 1648, then were suddenly cheese eating surrender mnkees, very happy in 1871 to be brought back into Germany.

They must have had great mattresses, Diogenes. I would have woken as I went down the front steps.

(Just joking – it’s a bit of a bugger to go to bed and wake up in a different country. Just let me tell you about going to sleep in Riyadh and waking up in congress with an Iranian goat. And I’ve got the pictures to prove it. The negatives cost me a damn fortune.)

“I’ve been assaulted by the police today as a sovereign Gunnai Gunditjmara DjabWurrung woman

You are about as much that as I am a sovereign Saxon Princess, Lidia. What we believe about our historical antecedents is not necessarily the whole truth of it. And you tripped or dived to the ground, you were not pushed or assaulted. You were the one trying to assault another woman and in doing so you made a disgraceful and humiliating display of yourself, Gunnae Gunditjmara DjabWurrung high heels and all.

Uh? Are you referring to my comment on those trusting the MSM on Rus-Uk?
I wasn’t referring to you, as I don’t think anyone on this blog trusts any MSM reporting on anything, let alone something as perversely ideological as a war.
No, I was referring to the great untouchables, the unwashed who watch MAFS, the ABCess, read the Guardian and believed the COVID BS and who may be on their 5th booster, while steeped in the overwhelming virtue of unlimited knowledge.

Spare a thought for Cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, who went to space for a stay on Mir and his whole country just disappeared.
“Krikalev was stranded on board the Mir during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. As the country that had sent him into space no longer existed, his return was delayed and he stayed in space for 311 consecutive days, twice as long as the mission had originally called for”

DOT, Cohenite, BON,

This popped up during the week. Never heard of it before. Interesting result. The supplement, D-serine is available and expensive. Animal study only but striking results. I am wary of loading up on a single nutrient, sometimes that can crowd out other nutrients and\or requires other nutrients to work properly. As a general rule I am very suspicious of such wonderful claims.

You should try Ukraine! For corruption by officials, it leaves Russia in the shade. The Russians may have ‘taught’ corruption to the Ukrainians but they embraced the idea and ran with it. I’ve been there several times and always take a cache of US$ with me. It can help in Russia but is de rigueur in Ukraine.

I’m certainly not going to argue the point with you on that.

JC at the other end of the economic spectrum today I was advised by someone with over 30 years experience in construction financing that his company is looking at acquiring some struggling companies. There’s been a string of those lately and it doesn’t look like stopping. While everyone is focused on mortgage related stress it looks like many companies have borrowed heavily in the low interest times and are now suffering.

BTW Britain looks stuffed but I’ll leave that to your judgement. Last I heard inflation at 10%, insufficient labour, costs skyrocketing. Is that what stagflation is all about?

The Miserable Ghost forgets a lot of things.

For someone who is the smartest guy in the room he:-
(a) makes a lot of mistakes; and
(b) shows no sign of having learnt from any of those mistakes.
The Godwin Grech debacle was an excellent reminder that, when the perfect “gotcha” of your opponent falls into your lap, best hold it up to a bright light.
