I do wonder how the bank accounts were setup to receive the scam funds from ATO – personal accounts would/should not be accepted.

Not strictly true, I don’t think.

True, I have done this. But the scam involved individuals obtaining an Australian Business Number which is supposed to be in support of a commercial enterprise.

Hard to believe that ABN were being issued so easily for people without corporate records or any actual business.

As a family farmer, as a handyman, as a lawnmower contractor, as an individual contractor for trade work you can be a sole trader and get an ABN as a matter of course.

Sounds strange, I know that an Australian can try to earn a living without a $5M per annum compliance team on payroll, but the world has surprises for us all.

Me too, same. The ATO have been nice enough to include a one click zero-out option for the pink form, and it takes about 2 seconds to do it. The only irritating thing is their email alerts stopped working one day due to a bug of some kind, and I can’t work out how to fix it, so I have to remember to log in each three months. I provide another example and it’s this alone. Still, interesting you think a reference to climate boondoggles is a curve ball.

Actually, I was the one who posted the fact that he opposed any legislation relating to climate and that he was dead against it. He told the administration to take a hike. What “boondoggle” are you referring to?
You’re obviously not trying to share a fair analysis of Manchin, because you completely avoid and skip the other points I raised putting him at odds with the Demon party. I’m now done with this.

LOL. Destroying millennia-old Christian communities in Iraq, slavemarkets in Libya, the destruction of cities in Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia, and Syria, and so on, just ‘side-issues’.

In comparison to the Cold War, yeah, just sides issues. What was so interesting about the Libyan slave markets? I’m with you. I always thought slavery has gotten a bad rap. 🙂 just kidding

In the end, this is what support for US policy amounts to.

Dover, you have to stop reading decade old pages in the Guardian. You’re basically about a decade behind where leftwing foreign policy was then.

The US was attacked on 911 by a bunch of goat rooting towel heads supported by millions back home. They deserved a decent thrashing and now appear to be a little more behaved.

Can I ask, where were you up to about 2008 with regards to Iraq and the war on terror. Forgive me for saying this, but I don’t recall you being an opponent then. Were you? Honest question.

No, if they go they will take it at considerable cost and the US in the end will just have to pound sand.

I’m not so sure, but we’ll see. I think it all depends on who is the US president.

As Russian and Indian lunar landings near, the moon rush gets crowded

The moon may be dead and desolate, but it is now the hottest real estate in the solar system, generating interest from countries across the globe eager to demonstrate their technological prowess and aid humanity in understanding its closest celestial neighbor.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/as-russian-and-indian-lunar-landings-near-the-moon-rush-gets-crowded/ar-AA1fu3rY

Next week, spacecraft from Russia and India are scheduled to touch down on the lunar surface, the latest in an international caravan of robotic spacecraft that have headed to the moon in recent years. They would be followed by the launch of a small lander to the moon by the Japanese space agency in an effort to test precise landing techniques that could be used in future missions.

I have no idea of the rigorous quality of today’s doctoral dissertations. Maybe they are a lot of “wankery.”

Vicki, I sat on a publisher’s award committee for five years, each year selecting the best thesis for (edited) publication from recently submitted PhDs. Without a completed PhD myself (another story), I still had enough track record of supervision and publication and journal editorial board membership and other scholarly contributions to warrant my place on that committee. This was in the late 80s and even then the amount of crap that was being award a PhD was increasing, although there was still some exemplary work, which we as an assessor group recommended to be published. I have seen synopses, and read first chapters, of some of the worst recent work (passed on to me by appalled colleagues still in the field) and they are not worth any sort of pass on the standards we used to apply.

Hard to believe that ABN were being issued so easily for people without corporate records or any actual business.

ABNs are dead easy to get.
And it wouldn’t be uncommon for a newly registered ABN to claim refunds in their first few months of operation when your outlays exceed sales.
It seems not dissimilar to the Cranston PAYG scheme by using dummy principals to distance yourself from the scam.
The flaw in the scheme is that funds are captured within the Australian banking system and, unless you have a way of liberating the funds, you are kind of stuck.
Crypto, I hear you say.
I just got a letter from my bank saying transfers to accounts they suspect are crypto trading are limited to $10k a month.
You need a massive network of dummy principals to front the ABNs and then get the money out of the system in an untraceable way.

This diminishing of the value of PhDs does no service to real research, such as Hairy had to do, working in an international research context on cutting-edge EU-funded projects, for his PhD in Science from the University of Sydney (in the good old days). After that he became a renowned professorial international team leader for some other key EU and ARC projects on arcane and mathematical stuff to do with internet packet switching and speed-enhancing proxies (something his team invented and were working on). He also worked in the early days of mobile telephony, at various research institutes and major telephonic corporations, and brought in muchos millions of dollars for various projects under his aegis. As Bruce of Newc and other PhD’s here would know, his was real and proper professorial work; he held a personal chair appointed on the basis of research, held that chair in both a technology and a sandstone university, and was duchessed at one time by Microsoft in New York. That he was an adept no-nonsense administrator and an experienced corporate warrior in industry was all rather secondary, although it later became a main game.

These days, well into retirement, he can’t stand what he sees going on in universities and thinks Vice Chancellors are far too woke and incredibly weak. He would have resisted from the start the incremental leftism now damaging the university sector and would have halted the declining standards long ago. It’s almost too late now.

Another problem he sees is that of bringing in senior public servants into run universities as VC’s or in other Chancellery positions. They have no good handle on the needs of academic research and teaching. A well-chosen professoriate can make a better job of it if they are allowed internal freedom from the leftist judges too often appointed as Chancellors.

There is some good eating out there in Orange. Good wineries too.

There is a shop called ‘Ferment’ which serves as a cellar door for places too small to run their own cellar door with staff over the whole weekend and too scattered. But obviously popping into wineries yourself is best.

(I only know this because I have family out there. I get the ‘family accommodation discount’, which amounts to staying agreeable after a few drinks and assuring my siblings that their kids’ mundane achievements are up there with Leonardo Da Vinci and H.H.Monroe (Saki)).

If you are going to buy gold, make sure it is from a reputable source.

I have a Chinese Tael (about 50 grams) gold ingot which is s beautifully manufactured fake. It took some sophisticated equipment to identify it as a fake.

It is weighted accurately to the international standard, has all the correct hallmarks and very much appears genuine to the experienced eye.

On analysis it was found to be about 60% copper alloy and tungsten formed into a thin wire core and incorporated into approximately 15 grams of 99% gold, so it is not worthless, but a real Tael would fetch about $A4500 whereas the gold value of the fake is worth around $A1400. Buy gold off eBay or the street at your peril.

If you buy from Perth Mint these days, the quality is guaranteed (unless you are the Chinese Government) but you need a verified account and the Mint no longer accepts anonymous cash sales following some money laundering activity by foreign folks involving little old ladies.

Speaking of gold, just re-read Octopussy last night.

The main character is a British Army major who murders a guide in 1945, after getting him to take him up an Austrian mountain to a cache of two Nazi gold bars.

He gets them back to the UK, and then makes a new home for himself and wife in Jamaica. He takes the two gold bars to some Chinese brothers who have the ability to quietly sell off some of the gold each month. First of all they assay them though, and find the Nazis – as was their custom – adulterated their gold with lead.

Dunno if that was true, but it’s a good story by Ian Fleming.

Child receives box of cereal for birthday in ‘horrific’ Amazon scam instead of VR headset (8 Aug)

Kerry and James, from Walsall, were holidaying in Dorset to celebrate their children’s birthdays. Ben was 11 and Robbie was 14 during their holiday.

Excited about their birthday presents, Ben asked for a drawing tablet and Robbie wanted a Meta Quest VR headset – both items were ordered from Amazon by their parents.

When the family arrived at Highlands End Holiday Park near Bridport, they opened Robbie’s Amazon box hoping to wrap up the gift before his birthday. They were left aghast when inside the brown package was a box of Kellogg’s Cornflakes, instead of the VR headset they had ordered.

The story doesn’t say who they ordered from, but replacing a VR headset with a box of cornflakes is very Chinese.

Gilead Sciences Is the Target of a Bizarre Legal Theory
A lawsuit claims the biotech innovator should have rolled out a new drug sooner.

By The Editorial Board

Gilead Sciences Inc. in Oceanside, Calif. Photo: Mike Blake/REUTERS

Do companies have a legal obligation to accelerate innovation? That’s the argument some plaintiffs are making in a lawsuit against Gilead Sciences for failing to launch an HIV treatment sooner. If the plaintiffs prevail, the result will be less innovation.

A California appellate court on Aug. 30 will consider claims from some 24,000 patients alleging they were injured by Gilead’s life-saving HIV drugs. While the Golden State’s plaintiff-friendly courts often attract meritless lawsuits, this one has sweeping implications for U.S. business and innovation.

The Food and Drug Administration in 2001 approved a Gilead HIV medication based on the compound TDF. Thanks to the drug and others containing TDF, the plaintiffs in the case are still alive. They don’t claim that Gilead’s treatments were defective or lacked adequate warnings, as is typically alleged in product-liability lawsuits.

Instead, they claim Gilead should have rolled out sooner an alternative HIV treatment known as TAF that carried fewer bone and kidney side effects. They say Gilead tried to maximize profits by slow-walking the development and launch of its TAF treatment because it might compete with its TDF medications.

There’s scant evidence to support their claims. The FDA didn’t approve the TAF medication until 2015, about a decade after a small Gilead study showed it could have potential benefits. But it wasn’t clear from that study if it was safer or more effective than TDF medications. As it turned out, the two carry similar risks and benefits for most patients.

While Gilead’s TAF regimen is less likely to cause bone and kidney damage in some patients, it is more likely to cause high cholesterol and weight gain. The plaintiffs don’t dispute these facts, but they claim that their kidney and bone injuries could have been avoided had Gilead introduced its TAF drug sooner.

A California superior court judge last year ruled that Gilead could be sued under this theory. As Gilead argues in its appeal, the ruling threatens to “create virtually limitless and unpredictable liability with no additional incentive for safety” and “weaponize the uncertain and winding path of scientific inquiry.”

Auto makers might be sued for failing to roll out safety features like 360-degree and rear cameras sooner. Smartphone manufacturers could be held liable because their earlier generation handsets are less secure and shatter-resistent than newer models.

Businesses often experiment with new products that they later shelve for one reason or another. Under the plaintiffs’ theory, companies would be discouraged from tinkering since doing so could create future liability if they don’t commercialize their inventions. As a result, drug makers would probably investigate fewer experimental medicines.

One irony is that the Inflation Reduction Act’s price controls encourage drug makers to delay more effective treatments to maximize their profits, as Genentech CEO Alexander Hardy explained last week using the example of an ovarian cancer therapy under development. So drug makers could get dunned no matter what they do.

If the California court rules for the plaintiffs, companies can expect to be sued under the same unmoored theory of product liability in jurisdictions around the country. This is another illustration of how plaintiff lawyers profit by inventing legal theories that do grave harm to consumers, businesses and innovation.

Albert Bourla is a Greek-American veterinarian and the chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical company.

It’s not that I’d never heard of him in the past. I couldn’t recall who he was.

Rabz
All this talk of the stock market crashing does not make sense – the yr end results are strong.
Everyone is now talking about blue sky esp with unemployment so low.
Mind you the low unemployment is creating constraints on businesses esp small businesses. The only thing I can see happening is small businesses packing up and bigger businesses getting bigger.
Then there is regulation. The killer of business and innovation.

I expect kipper-fuelled mania overnight.

The headlines in the Sun will be something to behold and will no doubt trigger the lowest point in Spanish-English relations since Henry Vee-One-One-One kicked Catherine of Aragon out of the cot.

Where does UAE and Bahrain come into it?

I thought his comments involved those countries involved in the Abraham Accords.

Okay. He sounds like he’s talking about the entire money shit show across the Mid East.

Still with hindsight the new HR alien thanking our previous RM for his 13 years work ( which he found out was ceasing when someone spotted it posted on Seek) but then naming the wrong mine site doesn’t inspire confidence in their revamped team.

Tickler

Stop worrying about penises and cute owls, and focus on the big story I posted. The lawyerists have put together a class action against the drug company because it wasn’t quick enough releasing the drug into the market.

More wank. At least you are not calling it a “vaccine”. This Big-Pharma muck was not indented for good health. Company heads should be be put up a wall and shot.

The English and sports.
The last time they beat the Spanish at anything it was only because Sir Francis Drake was so shit at bowls that he took all day to finish a game, by which time the tides were more favourable.

Louis

The US economy appears to be really strong. Here’s the problem.

Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow prediction is that real GDP will come in at around 5.8% Add in the inflation rate of just around 3% and we’re talking about 8.8% nominal GDP? That’s too high for the Fed and they will continue to tighten policy until the economy hits the skids. They want nominal to be lower than 5%

Just this week, markets are appearing to price in more rate hikes.

You think 4 years is enough to demonstrate good will on the Arab side when the largest country in the middle east is a potentially unstable dictatorship? Jordan doesn’t like the accord either.

It’s been a permanent war atmosphere in the mid east since 1948 and you think 4 years is enough to demonstrate a will for peace? How about the US cuts all aid to the Arabs and leaves Israel where it is, seeing it wants to be left in peace.
