Magpies Brayden Maynard sent straight to the tribunal by Laura Kane – Executive General Manager of Football.
Most ex-player commentators thought it was an unfortunate incident but it was in play and not avoidable due to the pace of the game.

After completing a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Ms Kane worked for a law firm representing victims in the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child abuse, before taking up her role at North Melbourne. Kane also has experience in community football leadership, having served as President of the Melbourne University Women’s Football Club.

The ladies will ruin every sport they administer. They cannot help themselves.

The ‘Speccie’ mark into the back of an opponent, which has a lot more deliberate intent, could be next if the ‘ladder’ gets injured or concussed. I hope not.

Fatty Phil claims he was besties with Assange? It’s bullshit. Meeting the guy doesn’t make you a bestie. But the funny part of the column was that the obese lardball was refused entry to the US.

<blockquote>I fear for my dear friend, Julian Assange

I was introduced to Julian Assange years before WikiLeaks, when he was just a young computer hacker blowing electric raspberries at the authorities. To borrow from Monty Python, he wasn’t the Messiah, he was just a very naughty boy. Eccentric, yes. Perhaps “on the spectrum”. But I liked him immediately – and a lot.

So when a few years later Julian told me of his idea for WikiLeaks – a “freedom of information” service on a global scale – and asked me to be the Australian representative on its grand sounding International Advisory Board, I was honoured to accept. Though let the record show the Board has never met, either in reality or virtually. Neither has Julian ever sought my advice.

The only consequence for my association with WikiLeaks was the Trump government’s refusal to grant me a visa to the US. But the consequences for Julian? Never-ending incarceration and torture.

LOL, is that true, the useless whale was refused a US visa?

hahahaha

at the end of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century, thousands of Italians migrated to Scotland

Why they did this remains a mystery …

No mystery for the emigres who came to Australia and established New Italy near Ballina. The journey of those people is a horror tale in the telling, they left Italy for what they were promised was Paradise in the Pacific only to sail into hell. And the reason they left Italy? They were abjectly poor and starving.

Living and working in Glasgow in 1990/1991 when we took a year off to live with the Outlaws there (I married a Scottish lass in Australia), it was very entertaining to go to an Italian or Indian Eating Place and to hear every one talking like Billy Connolly (without the ‘f’ words of course).

Can’t claim to have any acquaintance with him except for his media exposure – which is pretty far reaching. From that distance or extent of knowledge (or whatever you like to call it) I don’t find him a praiseworthy individual. Obviously eccentric, casual about responsibility to other people, has elevated opinion of his own worth. He is doesn’t have any of that on his own.

However, I do have a fixed opinion on exposure of information about the operations of our fighting forces – whatever you may think of the overall strategy employed by their masters.

Now the AFL season is all but over, I’m surfing pay TV for stuff to watch in place of the footy (which most weekends for the past six months has been on as background noise) and I’ve stumbled on a BBC doco on Cuba’s market reforms forced on the socialist kingdom by the bankruptcy of its communist government.

I discern from references to the liberalisation of air services from the USA that the doco dates from the 2008-2016 Obama regime, which gave US airlines permission to re-establish flights to Havana.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, which used to provide generous supply contracts to the Cuban sugar industry, the government can no longer afford state control of the economy and has had to slash its public payroll by around 20%.

The government has been forced to green-light reforms that, for example, allow citizens to buy and sell property – which created an instant booming real estate market – and to establish small businesses independent of the government.

The BBC doco, by Pommy journo Simon Reeve, was made before the current woke revolution which has gripped government organisations in the UK and elsewhere and is therefore relatively free of the Soviet-style censorship now rampant in the West.

A good watch if you see it pop up again on channels like BBC Earth (Foxtel channel 134).

I am so impressed by the efforts of some master chefs on this blog. I have been a keen cook in days past. Can especially recall those dinner parties of a few decades ago when we even had little menus for guests on the place cards!

For me, those days are gone, and although I love guests at the farm, the cooking part is the least anticipated.Mind you, I am also pretty beat at the end of the day after a fair amount of physical work. Boringly, I tend to concentrate on nutritious food for the two of us – especially since Covid when a healthy immune system assumed huge importance. Still – husband seems impressed with the fare he is presented with – so that is good. Eggs, and a few veggies all come via the farm. But we eat other people’s cows!

JC it wasn’t the 1950-60s to which I was referring it was the 1880s — the history is here — when I first visited the Veneto region in 2008 we stayed in an agri-turismo owned by a relative – on the coffee table was a Italian book recording the terrible journey of those desperate Italians duped by the Marquis De Rays the century before — I’d heard of it but the book was a blow-by-blow of the horror —- of the 340 Italians who embarked on the initial journey only 214 or so survived to make it to Australia — it was a disastro! but thank heavens for Henry Parkes — those Italians ended up in Northern NSW and made a fine fist of the circumstances once given the chance to thrive.

There are a few little Catholic churches in Kyoto, the one we visited this morning was St Viatur’s, a saint with whom I was not familiar, the Lyon based religious order named for him arrived in Japan from France in 1948 to help with rebuilding Japan in the post war period.
Now , as in many French parishes, the priest is African. Though I think his first language is actually English.
It’s not so hard to follow along, in a broad sense, in Japanese, some words used are Latin like ‘Ave Maria’ and as a kindness an English language pamphlet of the days readings are available for visitors in the narthex.
Rambling afterwards like Australia there is much casual dressing (not tracking dak casual though) in the midtown Kyoto streets but also quite a few young ladies sporting kimonos with toe socks and wooden thongs on their feet, they look lovely.
Lots of pretty dresses and some in formal wear too. Quite a few women, young and old, wear long fingerless gloves, I’m guessing to avoid getting tanned arms.
Still waiting for autumn weather.

Clive Palmer launches legal bid to force Australian Electoral Commission to count Voice ‘crosses’ as ‘no’ vot
Tim Clarke
The West Australian
Sun, 10 September 2023 11:54AM

Billionaire hobby litigant Clive Palmer will be back in his favourite court later this month, after launching a legal bid to force the Australian Electoral Commission to count crosses as a ‘no’ vote in the upcoming Voice referendum.

Late last week, Palmer — along with United Australia Party Senator Ralph Babet — lobbed in papers to the Federal Court requesting an urgent court challenge, with the national referendum vote due to be held on October 14.

The proposal, which will come before the court for a first hearing on September 20, reportedly seeks a Federal Court declaration that “effect shall be given to any ballot papers containing a cross (“X”) written alone in the space provided, by treating such ballot papers as clearly demonstrating the voter’s intention that he or she does not approve the proposed law”.

The challenge comes after No campaigners — including Opposition Leader Peter Dutton — claimed that the Yes campaign could get an unfair advantage if crosses were not counted as a No vote.

But the AEC has repeatedly said that the votes should consist of writing either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on the ballot paper.

On the question of using a tick or a cross, they are also clear.

“Please don’t,” they state.

“The issue with a cross is that on many forms people in Australia use in daily life, and in some other languages, a cross represents a ‘check mark’ indicating yes – it is therefore open to interpretation whether the cross denotes approval or disapproval.

“A clear ‘tick’ can be interpreted as denoting approval for the proposal.

“Don’t leave your vote up to chance or to be potentially questioned. Make your vote count.”

Yes indeed Mother Lode — sadly hunger and want in Italy unified or not was devastating, just like it was in so many parts of the world. Having recently visited relatives in Nothern NSW from whence I came what my cousins imparted to me were devastating stories of brutality and poverty — it was very sad and sobering. I urged them all to write down or record their memories because just like my parents and theirs, they’ll be gone too one day and the histories of our various families and how they came to be here and the hardships and challenges they overcame will be gone too.

A ‘No’ vote in the upcoming Voice referendum, to be held on October 14, would mean that Australia has decided to accept the permanent disadvantage of its Aboriginal people, a palawa elder has told a rally on Hobart’s Eastern Shore.

Rodney Dillon, chairman of the Aboriginal Heritage Council and co-founder of the Tasmanian Regional Aboriginal Communities Alliance, addressed a crowd of about 100 at the Yes23 Franklin Referendum Campaign Launch at Rosny Park’s Kangaroo Bay Parklands on Sunday.

the types of breasts are incredibly varied between women and non-binary people with breasts

Tells you all you need to know about that 9 breast types article.

Real women who have grown up with their breasts know their shape and size intuitively and from experiments with bra sizes and types. They know that there is considerable variability due to different types of basic frames and genes. Breasts are also bigger when you are breast-feeding. HRT can keep them plumped post-menopause, otherwise they tend to drop and slacken then. Real women’s nipples can be from dark brown to light pink, some are large and some are small. The only breasts type you don’t see in nature on that list is the first one, the total round ones stuck onto a thin chest – these are cosmetic inserts worn by non-binaries (so natch they are number one on the list) plus Cohenite’s Owls and porn stars (same).

Hard to say with those genderless names, but I hope these kids are both males. If a born to this couple, any female child will likely have some serious menstrual and other problems in normal development as a female due to having had a hefty dosing of testosterone in its mother’s womb as she pretended to be a man and took damaging male hormones. Even if male, this hormonal dosing during pregnancy could have had unwanted developmental effects. This is child abuse.

I urged them all to write down or record their memories because just like my parents and theirs, they’ll be gone too one day and the histories of our various families and how they came to be here and the hardships and challenges they overcame will be gone too.

yes, Tina, I hope our family website will have room for a lot of the past history of our Huguenot family and their flight from the C17th killing fields of Europe’s religious wars, their arrival in Britain for hard work draining the fens, a peasant revolt against them burning some alive, and fleeing to safety further down the eastern coast during a brutal Civil War. Then there are the stories of all the diaspora families in Australia and New Zealand, including the story of one great, great, great, great uncle who was transported to Tasmania and has left a huge clan there; the scallywag. The website can contain a lot of stories, written by many from their memories of earlier times, for the grandchildren of now. The internet has its uses for this sort of thing.

FMD. Cassie, here’s one for you. Daily Telegraph:

As they welcome Stellar into their Sydney home for a photo shoot, NSW politician Alex Greenwich and his husband Victor Hoeld embody the happy contentment they have carried with them since a meeting on a dancefloor sparked love at first sight more than 15 years ago. But things were far more grim in March, when Greenwich found himself the subject of a homophobic social-media tweet by then One Nation NSW leader Mark Latham. As the couple give their first joint interview since the incident, Greenwich opens up about the emotional battering he took, his passion for gay rights and why he is determined to hold Latham to account.

Alex Greenwich was between meetings on an otherwise unremarkable Thursday when his universe exploded. The independent Member for Sydney was being told by press gallery journalists in the Parliament of NSW – known as the “Bear Pit” for its no-holds-barred history of rough and tumble debate – this was the worst thing they’d ever seen.

They were arguably right. When Greenwich checked his phone, he saw a tweet directed at him by then One Nation NSW leader Mark Latham that graphically described a gay sex act and called it “disgusting”. Even for the subterranean sewer that social media can so often become, this was a new low.

An unprecedented political storm immediately enveloped him. Public figure after public figure arose to condemn Latham – even his own party boss Pauline Hanson told him he’d gone too far, which is surely a warning sign – and the nation was embroiled in outrage.

The media went into meltdown, Latham refused to apologise and it instantly became one of the biggest and most brutal stories in Australian politics.

But all of that was just the public debate. What does such a personal and intimate attack that goes straight to someone’s actual bedroom do to a person privately? What does it do to their partner? What does it do to their relationship? Today, for the first time, Greenwich and his husband Victor Hoeld are telling that story.

Greenwich and Hoeld first met on the dancefloor of an Oxford Street nightclub in Sydney. “Vic came up to me, put his hand out, and said ‘Hi, nice to meet you!’” Greenwich tells Stellar. “Seriously, it was that polite.”

As for Hoeld’s motivations? “Well, he’s very good looking, and he smiled.”

Greenwich says it was “old school”, and it was also love at first sight. They started dating, and not long afterwards Hoeld was rolling his clothes rack down the street to his boyfriend’s place.

Today, a decade and a half later in the same apartment building in Kings Cross, they are a postcard of marital bliss.

Indeed, in 2012 their marriage was literally a postcard. Then unable to wed in Australia, they went to Buenos Aires – and became the first foreign same-sex couple to get hitched in Argentina. At the time, Greenwich was a leading campaigner for same-sex marriage. He was also impatient. As he says, “I didn’t like that there was a law that said I couldn’t do something because I was gay and I sought to change that.”

On the day of Stellar’s photo shoot inside the couple’s modest but immaculate flat, the film crew is putting Greenwich through his paces, which he dutifully abides by with all the gentle acquiescence of a measured politician (albeit the best-looking one I’ve encountered). Halfway through the shoot, Hoeld strides in: “I’ve just been at a lunch. What do I have to do?”

As it turns out, Hoeld is so well-dressed that the stylist doesn’t offer a change of clothes. He’s the most German and also the least German person I’ve ever met. Either way, you want him on your side in a battle. And that was where Greenwich found himself that Thursday in March.

“When I first saw the tweet I was between meetings and I was literally in shock,” recalls Greenwich. “Journos were saying, ‘Alex, this is really bad. This is the worst thing we’ve seen.’ It just progressively dawned on me throughout the day. And it hit me. My first response was I did not want to engage with this at all. I wanted it to go away.”

But it didn’t. In the age of social media, perhaps of any media, it couldn’t. Despite all of his achievements, all of his advocacy, all of his policies, Greenwich still found himself reduced to a sex act in a single tweet.

His response is now borderline iconic. That night, he attended a gala event in the city and posted a picture to Instagram of himself and Hoeld – in well-fitted tuxedos – with a caption that served as a declaration: “For those wondering how I’m doing after Latham’s homophobic attacks today, I’m fine and I’m more motivated than ever to deliver long overdue LGBTIQA+ reforms… and I have the most handsome husband.”

He may have said he was fine but in reality, he wasn’t. He toughed it out all day, but that night he cried. He would have cried himself to sleep, but he didn’t sleep at all.

“I couldn’t fall asleep and then I had to get up the next morning because I had agreed to do ABC Breakfast [radio], which was probably the last thing I wanted to do.”

Recalls Hoeld, “I’ve never seen him cry like this before.” At that moment, Greenwich initiated evacuation. “We’re getting out of Sydney,” he told his husband. And so, that day, they left town and stayed with a friend. It didn’t fix everything, but it helped them to survive the storm. And all storms pass.

Afterwards, Greenwich was bombarded with obscene and hateful messages from random people on social media and beyond – grotesque images and exhortations for him to kill himself. For a while, his electoral staff were scared to answer the phone.

“I’ve always focused on policies and achieving legislative reform and stalking community campaigns,” Greenwich says of his career to that point. “And then suddenly, I’m put in a position where I’m constantly getting people attacking me based on my sexuality, not on my policy. That has had a really, sort of, confronting impact on me.”

Now things are calmer, but there are still flare-ups. Greenwich recently found himself dragged into the carnivalesque immolation of Latham as One Nation’s NSW leader (he has since quit the party altogether). A typical politician might feel some satisfaction of having ultimately won the war, or at least exacted some sweet revenge, but Greenwich wants nothing to do with it. Because, unlike most political battles, in this one his very body is the battleground. Politics doesn’t get more personal than that.

That’s why he’s now taking defamation action against Latham in a potentially groundbreaking case scheduled to begin later this month. More importantly, he has recently introduced an equality bill to parliament that he says amounts to the most comprehensive LGBTIQA+ reform process in the state’s history, with reforms that will, hopefully, finally cement legal equality.

As for Greenwich and Hoeld? “We need to spend more time with each other,” he says with a sigh. “Yes,” adds Hoeld with a laugh. “We don’t even have time to make plans to spend time.”

He’s a delicate little phuck isn’t he? That’s the only thing I take from this saccharin filled bilge. Oh and FMD. Again.

I listened to a very good podcast the other day with Nigel Farage. I like Nigel Farage….a lot. One of the reasons why I like him is that he doesn’t cower, he doesn’t crouch in fear, he doesn’t capitulate, he speaks his mind and he fights.

Asked in the podcast if he thought Britain was over, he was, surprisingly, tightlipped.
But he said that he remembers worse times in the IJK, such as those in the mid 1970s when the UK was plagued by strikes, blackouts, the three day week, and so on, he remembers the economic stagnation under Labour, he remembers how the UK Conservative and then Labour governments was held hostage by powerful unions, some of whom were taking direct orders from Moscow. He remembers, in 1974, doing homework by candlelight because of a strike. However Farage then said that despite the economic and social pain of those bleak days in the 1970s, Brits still had their history, their institutions, their church, their military, their police and even their NHS, which at the time functioned reasonably. In 2023 they have nothing, those once respected institutions have now been hijacked, corrupted and watered down to the point now where no one respects them, and all of this has created a despair and malaise which is now engulfing the whole of the UK.

The thing is, this isn’t confined to the UK, it’s here too.

I was commenting on how I didn’t like the downticking when only general pleasantries being made, concern for others etc, as pleasantries make this place a good place to hang out on. Downticking civilities seems brutal to me.

I am hoping now that the downticks will pretty much fade away. I’ve had a look at how they are used on Jo Nova’s and other blogs, and mostly they are left unused.
They might occasionally serve a useful purpose, but I’ve decided I will ignore them here and never use them myself without a very good reason. OK against M0nts for instance, or other trolls pushing a lefty line, or people who are fixated or abusive.

In most western countries Britain, the US, Canada, here, Germany it seems to me the Marxists believe their time has come or they’ve decided to make their big move. Possibly Trump and Brexit have forced them to move more quickly than planned causing many of them to expose themselves which has been horribly fascinating too. I get the feeling sometimes we are where Russia was 107 or so years ago. Certainly a lot of the shite that has gone down in the US since 2016 has that feel about it. It’s all so obviously coordinated across the world too- BLM, Covid, Marxist identity politics, globull warming.

The thing is, this isn’t confined to the UK, it’s here too.

Our polity isn’t as monolithic as the UK.

For that we can thank our founding fathers for opting for a US style federalism that preserved state sovereignty. (The history of Australia since federation has been largely the story of Canberra attempting to usurp state rights, and not without some success. Even Menzies didn;t seek to reverse this course, which calls his conservative credentials into question).

Our system leaves a lot to be desired, of course, but in theory it dilutes political power more or less in accord with the sound principle of subsidiarity. Given that, we have only ourselves to blame for failing to take advantage of that subsidiarity to challenge the power of the central planners and, presently, the uniparty.

One further, glaring weakness in our constitution is that local government can be over-ridden by state government fiat. This mirrors the federal-state conflict of wills at the local level and will increasingly become a theatre of conflict as local communities seek to assert their rights and interests over against federal and state encroachment on their lives. Watch this space and get involved in it, if you can do nothing else.

North to the flood zone…and back out again

Hmmm…drove north into central Greece. Things went well for a hundred k’s or so, but then started to look like a mistake. Evidence of widespread floods; roads blocked, mud everywhere. We diverted through a small village which had had six feet of water through it, according to some locals. The petrol pumps of the only service station were irretrievably damaged, they said.

Yup, we are buggered. The floods have put a stop to our travels north. Turned around by the Greek coppers, and had to backtrack three times. One of them said when asked if we could reach Kalabaka another way: “Not today. Not tomorrow or the next day. Never.” Much of central Greece is flooded, and we’d be foolish to keep trying to go north and get around the flood zone.

Had an amusing incident in a town called Lamia. We called into the local police station to see if they had any up-to-date information about the road network. Four coppers looking at us questioningly on entrance, so we said as we usually do: “We’re Australian, so only have English….” Before we could say another word one said “I’m Australian too – from Melbourne.” Turned out he was born there, but when he was 14 the parents decided to return them all to Greece for family reasons. He was most helpful with us, and was shocked to hear Melbourne is now six million people – he had never been back.
